Tracy was a God given angel to me and my family. I was charged with false allegations and sent a TPO. After consulting with Tracy, she handled the case and told me to not speak at the hearing. I am normally a very strong willed person, but she went in and got the JOB DONE. I was awarded fees in the hearing. She proved that this plaintiff was a liar and acted upon malicious and retaliatory purposes. Not only did Tracy admonish the plaintiff, the judge did as well given Tracy's arguments' and defense strategy.

My husband at the time literally stole my inheritance. When I confronted him, he attacked me, I fought back and I got charged with battery because he called the cops first. Then he did a a TPO and barred me from seeing my children. With all these charges, Tracy was referred to me by a good friend. Once she was on the case, everything turned in my favor. She was able to give me custody of my kids while I had a TPO on me which never happens. She also got my battery case dismissed. My husband told me he wished she was his attorney and said that will be our family attorney. All I can say was she was a rock when I was at my lowest point and she got me through it. Her knowledge of the criminal justice system and TPOs are amazing. If you hire her, you will not be disappointed.

I was in my cell never been to jail before. I was scared in an unknown space. Disconnected from my world and my freedom I didn’t know what my future was going to be. On rock bottom. I was called for an attorney visit a very energetic bubbly blonde woman with a MCM bag begins to speak to me I automatically felt safe she told me her creditials and I automatically had a little hope. Tracy was humble, fun and energetic. You wouldn’t know how big of a deal she is because she is so humble I can’t come up with any other words to describe her. She got my TPO dismisses between me and my wife she was diplomatic with my in-laws she even came to my divorce hearing to make sure everything was safe. She works tirelessly and ethically. She is a joy for the justice system here in Georgia and you won’t find a better attorney here in Georgia

I called Mr. Hirsch recently to ask for help in a potential fraud case. After spending an hour calling one department of the Atlanta police after the other and getting nowhere, I called Mr. Hirsch in desperation. Even though I am the victim of the fraud and Mr. Hirsch is a defense attorney, he seemed to care greatly for my well being and for my predicament. He provided me with a ton of good information and made me feel better about the terrible situation that I have found myself in. He talked with me for over 30 minutes even though he knew he would not be representing me. It is so nice to find a decent and caring attorney who will try to help when you are in a time of need. I hope that I never need his services, but if I ever do find myself in need of legal help for a mistake I made, the first call I will make with be to Matt Hirsch.

I had the pleasure of working with Alyson for nearly 4 years on a divorce case with a covert narcissist who suffers from various mental health issues in addition to his personality disorder. It was a nasty and stressful case with a completely uncooperative defendant but ultimately it ended up in a total, outstanding victory for me and I can unequivocally say that it was due in large part to Alyson being my attorney. Pause and take a deep breath...I hope your case won't be like mine but if you suspect that you might be in for a ride, stop, get on your knees and thank the Lord that you came across this review. If you're a serious person who is doing your best to do the right thing then Alyson is your attorney. You will not find a more knowledgeable, capable, and respected attorney in the metro-Atlanta area. In fact in my search for a lawyer, Alyson Lembeck's name came up multiple times both from highly respected professionals who work with the court system and recently divorced people in my network. These people did not know each other and I have since thanked them profusely for their recommendation. Alyson is a Top 50 Woman Lawyer in Atlanta who can help you not only as a divorce attorney, but with your prenuptials or as a Guardian ad Litem amongst other services. During my time working with her, I NEVER felt nickeled and dimed, her fees and billing were fair and she was always professional and accessible. Alyson is calm under pressure, strategic and analytical. She's a fierce fighter but not in a dramatic or superficial sense, instead she is laser - focused on asking the questions that quickly reveal the heart of the matter and the first time that you see her in action in a court room you're going to thank God that you both are on the same side. She is not distracted by silly answers or deflection - she is not there to socialize although everyone knows who she is and respects her from the Judges on down. Instead she is there simply to fight for you and the comfort that provides during an otherwise stressful process in priceless. At the same time that I was represented by Alyson, my ex was busy burning through lawyers and I got to witness how dangerous it is to both not be represented by good counsel and not respect court orders - the probability is very high that you are going to crash and burn and no one will be there to pick up the pieces. In addition to paying tens of thousands of dollars to me, my ex wound up going to jail because he did not respect the court system and I had a lawyer who understood that holding him accountable was important to me. To anyone contemplating divorce - be smart about it! Meet with Alyson and discuss your biggest concerns before you even think about filing - she can help you navigate those issues. There are so many restrictions placed on you and your spouse the day that you file for divorce and investing in a little planning can make a world of difference. The law is often times not intuitive, you'll hear conflicting advice from your friends and family and even if you scroll legal forums for months, the true answer may be very different from what you thought. Because there is so much on the table in a divorce, you really cannot afford to play around from a time or financial perspective. Even through the final hearing, Alyson was not only fighting for me, but setting me up for future success by making sure certain key facts went on the record so that should I need to come back to court for contempt, which is highly likely, future legal actions would be more likely to work in my favor. I was both in awe and so appreciative of her foresight and wisdom. In wrapping this up, I want to give you a few pieces of advice. Your lawyer is not a therapist or a private detective - therapists and private detectives are cheaper. Have a good support team in place and understand that no matter how good your attorney is, at the end of the day you are the subject matter expert on your case!

Alyson Lembeck is utterly unflappable, focused, knowledgeable, and efficient. Her associates and staff are all professional, kind, and responsive. I never had to follow up with them for responses, which, as an attorney myself, I know is exceedingly unusual. She and her team provided support and guidance during the scariest time of my life. I hope to never need her firm again, but I would not hesitate to recommend her to anyone else going through a divorce, especially in a high-conflict situation involving contested custody.

Alyson assisted with me with a post-Divorce Settlement Agreement where the OP was seeking alimony in perpetuity by exploiting weaknesses in the contract language. She was timely, client focused and highly thoughtful throughout the process. She and her firm were masterful and polished with all pleadings and filings. Billing was painless and fair. She selected an impressive mediator and swiftly brought the case to a close. This firm blew me away and brought me to tears. They helped me to feel understood and reassured. You won’t second guess yourself while working with them. Be honest and true. They are on the good side and masterful at family law.

I contacted Julie and inquired with her to see if I had a case and if she could assist. Although she couldn’t assist Julie was able to refer me to another lawyer. You can definitely tell Julie is all about helping and not based solely off of money. There are other lawyers that try to charge a fee just to speak with you. I appreciate Julie’s professional service and would refer her to anyone that’s in need of a criminal defense attorney based off of my first impression.

Ok to start I have literally been using Julie Kert's services for years now, and since I found her she has NEVER let me down! I first hired Julie for a dui that I received in Cobb County almost 10 years ago. I was praying to beat the charges but because I had heard of how strict cobb County can be I knew I needed a really good attorney. I never had hired a top tier attorney at the time but because of the circumstances I knew it would be the best decision for me to do so. I received a ton of letters via mail from all sorts of attorneys and for some reason Julie's stood out to me. I went and met with her for the initial free consultation. I felt very confident with her and I could tell that she was extremely knowledgeable to the point that I decided to hire her that day. I apparently had made the correct decision because Julie was able to get the charges totally dismissed which was amazing, and at that point I knew that she was worth every single penny that I had paid her. Fast forward down the line I had a a situation come up with an ex that I had been living with who had acquired a small misdemeanor marijuana charge at the home that we shared, however even though I was not there when the incident happened the police decided to charge me as well along with the ex who had already admitted to the marijuana. I found out later that I had a warrant from those charges that I didn't know of and was arrested. I called Julie and hired her and when we went to court she was able to have all charges dropped due to the fact that the charges had already been previously charged to someone else. What I have learned in my experience is when hiring attorneys you are paying for the experience and knowledge which is what will win cases. A lesser experienced attorney might not know all of the intricacies of the law to be honest. Given Julie's history and prior work experience as a prosecutor I have no doubt that she knows both sides of the field which is what I think has been very successful in helping me with my cases. I received another DUI years later and decided to go with a friend because I thought that it was a simple case. At the time I technically had never been convicted with a DUI and it was a refusal to blow so I knew there wasn't any hard evidence. Needless to say I went to court and lost that case which should have been a very simple case. The reason being is the attorney was inexperienced. Years later I received another DUI and I decided to hire another attorney again because I didn't think I could afford Julie, however I lost the case and wound up spending more money after the case than what I would have spent if I would have just hired her. And now, what brings me to this review, I hate to admit it but for the sake of this review I will expose that that I have caught the third and final DUI I will ever catch in my lifetime and I made sure to hire Julie because I did not need this DUI to stick because three would be very bad, as if the 2 prior wasnt bad enough. This time however I really felt that I was innocent. Let me tell you that Julie Kert was able to get the DUI thrown out by the judge due to circumstances that only she in my opinion would have been able to execute due to her exemplary knowledge and experience and legal intelligence in the courtroom. It is an honor to watch her work and witness her masterful execution in the courtroom. She has literally saved my life this time around. The earlier situations I was very young and making stupid decisions and this time I really did get caught up in a bad place at the wrong time and she saved my life for me and my family! Thank you Julie Kert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ms. Williams and her team are absolutely exceptional! I needed her expertise due to my failure to disclose a juvenile matter. A matter in which I was told I didn’t need to from the counsel of a previous lawyer who worked that case many years ago. Ms. Williams understands the board on a level that many others do not. After my initial consultation, she went straight to work to construct an outstanding letter of explanation. The letter itself was thorough, thoughtful, and allowed me to finally be heard and be seen in a manner that not only granted me my ATT and license, but also a tool to help heal my wounds from the trauma that had occurred during that juvenile matter. Ms. Williams regularly followed up with the board and kept me in the loop throughout the entire ordeal. This office is so professional and truly care about their clients. Words cannot express the appreciation I feel for Hahnah Williams and her team!!!

I’m Kai... This Review is about Michael Schlifka and Lisa Jackson, both who ended up being heaven sent angels in my life! Michael and Lisa are two of the most supportive, heart felt, hard working, determined, people I’ve ever met.. Im blessed Michael was my divorce attorney, and that Lisa was the paralegal over my divorce case.. They were an AWESOME team over my case, my divorce was everything BUT pretty. My ex wife and I have 2 kids together, my ex demanded the divorce but was being very difficult with the kids. It had even got to the point where I was set up by my ex, and my character was assassinated by my ex. To try to obtain full custody of the kids. Through it ALL Michael stayed by my side, and fought for me and my kids diligently and affectively. Michaels sense of compassion but ability to be firm when need be is on point! Michael really knows his stuff, and fought for me tooth and nail! He did not give up on me or my case, he showed up to every court date, every hearing, and fought so hard for me. Sometimes I sit back, and thank god for bringing Michael and Lisa into my life. And putting Michael as my attorney over my divorce.. When I began my divorce, I knew nothing about divorce. Was highly hurt and emotional. Heartbroken is an understatement.. I googled divorce attorneys, not knowing where to start. I came across Meriwether and Tharpe, got put in touch with Michael Schlifka. And the rest is history.. Michael always kept my kids and I best interest in mind, and never gave up on my case. My divorce was LONG and drawn out, but he stayed by my side. He answered every email every phone call, and was highly effective. In the end of my case, due to Michael’s drive and will not to give up. My divorce worked out perfectly, everything went how I wanted! I couldn’t have asked for a better attorney!.. Lisa Jackson is a very determined hard working paralegal! Lisa was there every step of the way also, she never gave up on me either. Lisa is very professional, very heart felt, and very supportive also. Lisa’s communication is ON POINT! She kept me updated on everything, and any information I needed to submit. She was always sure to let me know, she reached out when need be by phone call or email anytime I needed to know anything. Lisa has a spirit of gold! Lisa was also heaven sent to me!.. Any questions or concerns I had, Lisa was right there to make sure she answered them. She did and awesome job, at keeping all of my case information in order. Also being sure that everything was submitted and on point, Lisa is just as hard working as Michael. I’m blessed that Michael and Lisa are hard working, determined, caring, and persistent people. They were a GREAT legal team over my divorce case. My divorce was long, drawn out, and ugly.. BUT thanks to Michael and Lisa, my case ended the right way. I am more than thrilled with the outcome, they both worked hard and diligently to be sure my outcome was the best. I am forever grateful, and blessed for Michael Schlifka and Lisa Jackson!

Michael was kind and compassionate about my terrible situation. My divorce was very unpleasant. He worked with me (and my ex-husband) to get to a very specific parenting plan and next 8 or 9 years plan. We agreed to co-parent 50/50 and maintain the "homestead" 50/50 until the last child graduates but MAN it was hard to get to that point. All the anger - he worked with me and often times I took out my anger on he and his team of paralegals (who were all wonderful!). He never had any anger back, mostly just some humor. He understood me. He took time to understand the unreasonable situation I was in and worked hard to get a great settlement. We didn't even have to go to court! Thanks so much Michael Schlifka!

Worst Attorney Please do not hire Attorney Dixon to represent you for Family practice or a Divorce case! I paid her the retainer fee to represent my Son and is very disappointed with her rendered services. The opposing Attorney filed several motions and she never filed a motion on his behalf. It almost appeared that she is was working with the opposing counsel against him. Ms. Dixon only have 3 years of experience and it showed when she asked my Son to hire another Attorney to assist her. Horrible communication skills- Who calls a client at 6:00 a.m. to debrief the day of a trial and shows up 30 minutes late to court? He has been fighting to receive his funds from an escrow account and reduction in child support with no assistance or responses from her! She showed no concern or compassion but still received money for providing poor service. He lost his livelihood and everything that he owned with no fight or help from her.

Bill is an incredibly effective, level-headed and thoughtful attorney. Not only did he provide a high level of expertise and guidance throughout the divorce process, he was able to advise on what areas were worth pursuing and fighting and what was not, so that I did not incur unnecessary billable hours. I was also pleased that he was always quick to respond, available for calls, and moved the case along quickly. He remained engaged and up-to-date on the status of my case, and never once passed me along to other attorneys in the firm. During the settlement process, he firmly pushed back on the other party when necessary, and guided us to an acceptable outcome. I am grateful I hired Bill to represent me in my divorce. Balean and Kristy kept me sane during the hardest year of my life and I am forever grateful. I was too nervous to reach out to a divorce lawyer even though it was well past time, so a friend of mine who is a lawyer in another area talked me into it and recommended these two personally. I can't say enough good things so I'll try and break it down into the things that are/were important to me in a divorce. They are NOT pushy. I was so nervous the first call, I did not want to get a divorce. I even (politely) told them I hope we don't ever need to talk again. They were extremely supportive. Not one single time did either of them push me towards a divorce. They answered all my questions honestly and thoughtfully and I never felt rushed. On the flip side of that, they are also very cognizant that their time is expensive. So for me, it is very hard to find a lawyer who is constantly aware of running up your tab, but personable enough to trust them and not feel like just another check in the spreadsheet. On top of that, I have ADHD so I can get off on a tangent with the best of them. Both Kristy and Balean we're very good at redirecting me into the areas that mattered and pushing me though the areas that didn't without letting me get hung up on them. They are extremely prompt (during business hours, I cant speak to otherwise because I don't expect people to work 24/7), I don't think I ever waited a full day for a reply. You WILL feel like a priority. Which frankly with how being a lawyer works, is pretty remarkable. They know their stuff. I don't know a better way to put that. And if they don't know, they make it a priority to find out. I had a few odd snafus with property issues and a few (lets say less than reasonable) demands from my now ex, and if I had a question they tracked it down if they weren't already sure. They are generally fun and calming presences. Mediation went for a full day, so Balean was trapped in a room with me for probably 12 straight hours. And if you aren't aware (i certainly wasn't), mediation is very much hurry up and wait. When we had the mediator, it was 100% business. When she was in the other room, we walked through everything we needed to discuss, got advice, and then were able to relax and recharge a bit before the next turn. As you can imagine, its an emotional time. I went from needing to pace the hallways angry to bouncing off the walls bored to everything in between and not once did Balean get even slightly irritated with me. They are VERY aware that you're going though something and that while we need to be efficient there also needs to be room for you to be a person with feelings and needs. So if you don't read all of that, the important bits are they are going to make you a priority and you'll feel like it, they will not run up your bill for no reason and will be honest when they think something may do so, they give you grace to be going though something hard, while also getting you though it in a prompt and efficient and competent manner. I absolutely would not even consider another legal team if these guys are available. I can't speak highly enough of this firm.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Kristy for quite some time, both on a personal basis and as a client. I can genuinely affirm that she epitomizes professionalism. When our family encountered a delicate situation, Kristy adeptly guided us through it. She approached the matter with a methodical strategy, staying ahead of the curve, and crucially, she had the ability to convey intricate details in a clear and accessible manner. I enthusiastically recommend Kristy Barnhart.

I am so thankful that I was referred to this group. Matt and his team have gone above and beyond fighting for me and my children through a really messy divorce. They kept me informed through the entire process and treated me like a friend and not like a “client”. I am truly grateful for their service.

This attorney, took $4900 from me to do nothing but cost me my sons paternity time to be thwarted by not giving me notice that I had a child custody hearing. She was unprepared in a TPO order prior and would not assert herself to a lying & vindictive wife. Today I’m having to get another attorney to clean up her mess. She dismissed herself from my case without advising me of my child custody case court date. As a result I haven’t seen my son in almost 8 months. Now I have to fork out another $2500.00 for another attorney. Thanks Joyce for a splendid job that you managed to foul up. GREAT JOB!

Joy is amazing. She always listened to me to understand what my needs were and she did a superior job executing my request. Although I just met Joy, she managed my case like she was a close family friend who sincerely had my best interest at heart. During the trial she was not thrown off by the other party's spontaneous attempts to sneak in invalid information. She even fought for me all the way to the end when the Judge was giving the decision; she recommended an alternate proposal which would benefit me and the Judge accepted. I am so glad she knew what she was doing. From the first conversation with Joy I felt confident in her ability to handle my case and from the day I hired her I never worried again about my case. I would highly recommend Joy and she will handle all of my family matters.

My ex-wife and I hired Grossman to defend our son who caught a ride from some questionable people in you from Pensacola to Atlanta where I live. He was asleep in the backseat of the car when he was rudely woken to being in the middle of a high-speed chase from the police. The driver and his wife were throwing drugs out the window my son was telling them the whole time to pull over and to let him out. Of course they were all arrested and drugs were confiscated picked up alongside the road along with some weapons and other items. None of the evidence that was picked up had my son's fingerprints on it or DNA or any physical connection to him. And yet my son is now sentenced to almost 30 years in a federal prison thanks to the inability of Grossman to object to things like the video of the car chase. Why was that even submitted into evidence when he was in the backseat of sleep. The wife of the driver even said that in a recorded statement. She also said a bunch of other stuff that went along with my son's side of the story and yet no one but Grossman could have gotten him almost 30 years and a federal prison. Now I know Christmas is going to have a response to this and how he did everything he could and what I'm saying is not true. Well if anybody's lying it's him. I'm not calling him a liar but if he contradicts what I'm saying then he's lying. Don't waste your money on Richard Grossman.

Mr. Grossman is an excellent lawyer and we cannot recommend him highly ENOUGH! He answered our plea for a lawyer on a Sunday afternoon and helped us navigate the legal system smoothly. We had never had need for a lawyer before and Mr. Grossman worked several months on our behalf, keeping us informed the whole way, and got the case dismissed. His knowledge, concern and experience were greatly appreciated!!

He is the worst! I asked the firm to switch me from him and they would not after wasting $50,000 on my still litigating divorce. He ran the bill crazy up, was very disrespectful, dud not tell me to postpone my divorce until 2019 in order to not pay taxes on alimony I'd receive and totally bungled my divorce. $100,000 later, I've had to hire another attorney to fix his legal mess.

I contacted the Attorney Generals Office to register a complaint of Fraud. I did so on line. They told me it would be a fee of $5.00 for filing, so I used a credit card. But before I could be connected to an attorney they wanted me to agree to an automatic withdrawal of $60.00 a month until I cancelled. This is another form of extortion especially since the Attorney General is paid by tax payers. Do not consumers have any protection by our government without them trying to extort funds from taxpayers?

What a Domestic Violence Lawyer Can Do for You

A domestic violence lawyer provides legal assistance to individuals involved in cases of domestic abuse, whether you are a victim seeking protection or someone accused of domestic violence defending against the charges. These lawyers help with obtaining restraining orders (protective orders), representing clients in criminal court, and handling related family law issues such as child custody, divorce, and visitation rights.

If you are dealing with domestic violence, a lawyer can help protect your rights and navigate the legal system to ensure your safety or defend you if you’re falsely accused.

When Should I Hire a Domestic Violence Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a domestic violence lawyer if you are:

  • A Victim of Domestic Violence:
    • Filing for a protective order (restraining order): If you need immediate protection from an abuser, a lawyer can help you file for a protective order, which legally requires the abuser to stay away from you and refrain from contacting you.
    • Divorce or separation due to abuse: If domestic violence is a factor in your relationship, a lawyer can help you pursue a divorce or legal separation and ensure that you are protected throughout the process.
    • Child custody and visitation issues: A lawyer can help you secure custody of your children and limit or restrict the abuser’s visitation rights to protect the safety of your children.
    • Filing criminal charges: If you are pursuing criminal charges against the abuser, a domestic violence lawyer can work with law enforcement and prosecutors to ensure the case is handled properly.
    • Assistance with safety planning: A lawyer can advise on the legal steps to create a safety plan, including securing temporary housing, and taking steps to protect you and your family.
  • Accused of Domestic Violence:
    • Defending against criminal charges: If you’ve been accused of domestic violence, a lawyer can defend your case, challenge the evidence, and represent you in court. If possible, the lawyer can help get charges reduced or dismissed.
    • Challenging a restraining order: If someone has obtained a protective order against you, a lawyer can help you contest the order to prevent it from negatively impacting your life, including your employment and child custody rights.
    • Dealing with family law issues: Domestic violence allegations can affect child custody, divorce, and property division. A lawyer can represent your interests in family court and ensure that your parental rights are protected.
    • Avoiding criminal record implications: A lawyer can work to minimize the impact of the allegations on your record, which can affect your employment, housing, and future legal matters.

Hiring a lawyer at the earliest stages can help ensure your rights are protected and the case is handled effectively, whether you are seeking protection or defending against accusations.

What Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Do?

A domestic violence lawyer provides various legal services depending on the specifics of your case. These responsibilities often include:

  • For Victims:
    • Filing for protective orders: A lawyer can help victims of domestic violence obtain temporary or permanent restraining orders, which provide legal protection by restricting the abuser’s access to you and your children.
    • Representing you in divorce and child custody matters: Domestic violence often leads to divorce or separation, and a lawyer can represent you in family court to protect your assets, secure custody of your children, and arrange spousal and child support.
    • Criminal representation: Lawyers work with law enforcement and prosecutors to pursue criminal charges against the abuser, ensuring that you are informed and supported throughout the legal process.
    • Safety planning and legal advice: Lawyers provide advice on how to stay safe legally and can assist in securing temporary housing, providing guidance on how to leave abusive situations safely.
  • For the Accused:
    • Defending against charges: A lawyer will build a defense by investigating the case, gathering evidence, and challenging the claims made against you. If necessary, the lawyer can negotiate with prosecutors to reduce charges or penalties.
    • Challenging protective orders: If a restraining order has been placed against you, a lawyer can contest the order and present evidence to defend against it, aiming to minimize its impact on your life and reputation.
    • Handling related family law issues: Lawyers help defend against domestic violence allegations in divorce, child custody, and visitation disputes, working to protect your parental rights and reputation.
    • Preventing long-term consequences: A lawyer will work to protect you from the long-term consequences of a domestic violence conviction, such as a criminal record that could affect employment, housing, and more.

How Are Domestic Violence Lawyers Paid?

Domestic violence lawyers generally charge for their services in different ways depending on the case's complexity and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many domestic violence lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location. Hourly rates are common for both criminal defense and family law matters.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as filing a restraining order or defending against a straightforward domestic violence charge, some lawyers offer a flat fee that covers all legal work related to that service.
  • Retainer: In complex cases, such as those involving criminal charges, divorce, and custody disputes, a lawyer may require a retainer fee, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.
  • Pro bono or reduced fees: Some domestic violence lawyers provide pro bono (free) or reduced-fee services to victims of domestic abuse who cannot afford legal representation.

It’s important to discuss fees during your consultation to ensure you understand how much your case will cost and what payment options may be available.

How Much Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a domestic violence lawyer depends on the complexity of your case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal work required. General cost estimates include:

  • Restraining orders: The legal fees for filing a protective or restraining order typically range from $500 to $2,500, depending on whether the case requires a hearing.
  • Criminal defense: If you’re defending against domestic violence charges, legal fees may range from $2,500 to $15,000 or more, depending on whether the case goes to trial and the severity of the charges.
  • Family law issues: Legal fees for divorce, child custody, and other family law issues related to domestic violence can range from $3,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case.
  • Hourly rates: Domestic violence lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour for their services, with more experienced lawyers charging higher rates.

Always ask for a detailed cost estimate during your consultation to understand the total cost of legal services.

Top Questions to Ask a Domestic Violence Lawyer

Before hiring a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the right experience and approach for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with domestic violence cases?
Ensure that the lawyer has handled domestic violence cases similar to yours, whether you’re a victim or the accused.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, flat fees, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely outcome of my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Domestic violence cases vary in length, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what might cause delays.
  5. Will I need to appear in court?
Ask if your participation in court is required, and how the lawyer plans to represent you during hearings or trials.
  6. What steps should I take to protect myself or my rights?
Whether you’re a victim seeking protection or defending against allegations, ask the lawyer how they will help you navigate the situation.

How to Check the Credibility of a Domestic Violence Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable domestic violence lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for domestic violence experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in domestic violence cases and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients say about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have been involved in domestic violence cases.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Look for certifications or memberships in family law or domestic violence advocacy groups, such as the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • For Victims:
    • Details of the abuse: Prepare a detailed account of the abuse, including dates, locations, and descriptions of any injuries or threats.
    • Police reports and medical records: Bring copies of any police reports, medical records, or photographs that document the abuse.
    • Legal filings: If you have already filed for a restraining order or been involved in any legal proceedings, bring copies of those documents.
    • Questions about your safety and legal options: Be ready to ask about the best steps to protect yourself and your family, as well as what legal actions you should pursue.
  • For the Accused:
    • Details of the allegations: Prepare a detailed account of the incident or allegations against you, including any evidence or witnesses that support your defense.
    • Legal documents: Bring any legal documents you have received, such as a restraining order, criminal charges, or child custody filings.
    • Questions about your defense: Prepare questions about the legal process, possible penalties, and how the lawyer plans to defend your case.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation and provide the best possible legal advice.
