Nelissa is an extraordinary attorney with professional experience that was absolutely critical in defending our case. She was extremely prepared at all times with facts, data and evidence that the opposing side simply could not match. She truly cared about the case and getting a just a fair result for us as people, not just clients. She is extremely well regarded by her peers and is highly effective.

I am an activist for the poorest, least represented people in society and I have known Nancy since she was a public defender. She is a brilliant tactical attorney at trial and she is very well received when it comes to negotiating positive outcomes with district Attorneys. Nancy has a compassion and empathy that really tunes her in to the clients personality and she very quickly grasps the critical dynamics of relationships and circumstances of a case and she sorts out the truth and presents it to the court in persuasive terms. not everyone is innocent, and Nancy is very compassionate and she negotiates outcomes that are fair and positive for the client and the court. Nancy keeps people out of jail and minimizes their time in the system and the system can be very unfair without Nancy to guide you through it. She has also gone to bat for people on probation to be allowed to use medical marijuana with a prescription, particularly people with HIV who only get relief from marijuana use and nothing else. It took a lot of guts for her to advocate for changes to probation in Boulder County to allow people with medical conditions to use medical marijuana, it was a very edgy subject at the time. Nancy has worked on important cases and important issues without regard for her personal compensation many many times. I recently learned when I sent her a new client that she is finally a partner in a firm and I want to say it is about time Nancy got PAID! I have extensive experience with very tough people in the justice system in Colorado, I know the group of top attorneys in Colorado very well, and Nancy is absolutely the best. If you are in trouble, she is your savior, I've seen her work her magic for everyone I have ever sent to her and there have been many. Thanks for everything you do Nancy. Peace

I have hired Nancy on two different occasions and couldn't be more happy with the job she did. Both times she was very helpful, reassuring , professional, and a fighter when it comes to making a deal with the DA. One of my cases was totally thrown out and the other was dramatically reduced. All in all I would hire Nancy next time and ever time very happy with her services.

I interviewed 4 attorneys to handle my case. The first 3 attorneys spent 15-20 minutes with me on the phone explaining what I was facing and how they would defend me; each then invited me to their office for a 30 minute meeting, presumably at which point they would ask for my signature for their representation. Nancy spent an hour with me on the phone without any charge or expectation that she would represent me. She explained every detail of what I was facing and what was the most likely successful outcome. She was far more detailed than the others. She allowed me to ask a lot of questions. And when we were done with the phone consultation, she said, "I know you're talking with other attorneys. If you want to proceed with me, let me know." Choosing Nancy was easy because she gave me her best without expecting anything in return. As Nancy represented me throughout the process, I got the same treatment. She communicates in a very timely manner. She understands how to navigate the system to her clients' benefit. Knowing that a court-ordered treatment program would be part of the judge's decision, she got me going in that early. She took a personal interest in my family situation. Everything played out as she said it would, and I received the best outcome that was possible given the situation. I am very thankful that I found Nancy to represent me in this unwanted situation. I would recommend her to anyone facing similar.

I had an extremely high conflict divorce. During the nearly year long nightmare, Barre went above and beyond in handling my case. While my ex was largely able to isolate my young children from me for the entire divorce, in the end my young children got a better parenting plan than was recommended by the PRE and it will ramp up to 50/50. I only wish my ex had hired a competent lawyer, as her lawyer made things far worse than just the malicious behavior of my ex did.

I have a very high-conflict post-divorce situation involving my vulnerable children. My family and I call Barre, "our Super hero." Barre is a human being first with a heart of gold for children and families. As I was a wreck, Barre "cut to the chase" and helped me navigate a very emotionally difficult situation. My daughter was on death's door. By listening to Barre, we won EVERYTHING in court. My daughter is alive and thriving. Unbelievable to me given the fire power of my ex and his willingness to lie and use my kids as pawns. I would not want to play against Barre in a game of chess, but having him on my team was life saving. I am forever grateful to Barre and his partner, Amy for giving me my daughter her life back, my sanity back and renewed sense that no matter what, LOVE and TRUTH (with Barre as my attorney) will win!!

I have worked with several different attorneys over the last 10 years dealing with parenting and post-divorce issues. Barre has been the best by far. He is level-headed, strategic, informative and a good communicator. He will tell you like it is in his experience, give you options, solid advice and is aggressive when necessary. It is also clear that he does not need to "pad my bill" by trying to stir up unnecessary billable hours. He has advised me on best, and least-expensive options. I highly recommend him.

I contacted Jennifer Watkins during one of the worst weeks of my life, not knowing what I was going to do or how I was going to put everything back together. By the end of our first conversation, I felt like there was a plan and a path forward. She was supportive, proactive, and always realistic. She showed immediate familiarity with not only the law but the ins and outs of the particular courtroom I would be facing. She was able to put my case in the best light possible, and had so many helpful recommendations that really made a difference. In the end the outcome was the best I could have hoped for. Additionally she was able to give me excellent post-trial advice and tips on the next steps. I highly recommend the Watkins Law Firm and am grateful for her efforts on my behalf.

I am extremely grateful to have had Jason as my attorney in handling my case. There are not enough words to describe how professional, knowledgeable, and outstanding Jason is both as an attorney and as a human being. I encountered Jason during a very difficult moment in my life when false accusations were made against me. I never imagined I would face such an experience. From the beginning, Jason offered care, professional advice, and unconditional support. He is not only an outstanding professional but also an exceptional person with strong moral and ethical values. Jason provided unwavering support and to help me navigate this extremely challenging situation. His commitment to using the truth to defend his clients is remarkable, and with his help, we won my case. Anyone experiencing false accusations under Title IX or dealing with any other concern within his expertise, I highly recommend Jason. He is not only experienced but also incredibly talented. I believe he is one of the best attorneys you can have, not only in the Colorado area but across the United States. Thank you so much, Jason.

On May 11th I wrote a complaint letter to Peter Fabish at Conscious Family Law and Mediation LLC regarding Mediation services with him on February 26, 2024. The least that I expected was a refund check for $750. There has been no response. Without going into the details, I will say that Peter's actions led to one member of a group of three seeking Mediation for an APR, Allocation for Parental Responsibilities, to make a radical move on March 1st, 2024 that led to the false arrest of another person in the group of three, serious criminal charges, and the removal of a young child from two people he loves and a home he feels safe in. Subsequently, my entire humble savings is gone to legal fees and my next step is to take out a loan. I am 76 and live on Social Security. The consequences because of Peter's incompetence has thrown us into a crisis that may never be fully resolved. We gave a clear picture of what we expected from Mediation in our intake session and we requested the non-attorney for Mediation to save money. Peter showing up as an attorney was their first mistake. The trauma from this incident has been highly stressful and harmful though abruptly losing the child in our lives is the deepest grief that I have ever experienced. It was a life-changing mistake to use this company and Peter Fabish.

Without him, I wouldn't have known what to do and surely would have gotten boned by insurance. In the future, if I get into an accident, I'm calling him before I call anyone else (even my loved ones) because he steps into action immediately with sound advice, his explanations are clear, his candor is genuine, and I have no doubt that he has my best interests in mind. I was Care's paralegal for years and it was one of the most exciting and valuable learning experiences of my life. Care is a former Boulder County judge and district attorney, and her knowledge of criminal and family law is unmatched. She also brings a warmth and sense of humor to the sometimes difficult job and cases that she works on that gives comfort to clients going through a very hard time. Being involved in a criminal and/or family law case is an extremely difficult experience, and knowing that you have a kind, hard-working attorney who knows the law better than anyone on your side is the best solace. As her paralegal, I was able to learn by instruction and observation (and osmosis!) the rules and regulations governing our legal system and gained great respect for those working at all levels of the agencies involved. I felt prepared for a diversity of career options after working for Care and enjoyed working for her on a personal level as well. Care is the best!

I cannot even put into words how impressed, grateful and appreciative I am of Care and Jake at The Law Office of Care Enichen. I found myself in an unusual situation with the law. Never having any type of altercation with the justice system or law enforcement myself, I was at a loss, confused and worried. I found Care on Google and was so impressed with her extensive experience and knowledge with Boulder County laws and court proceedings. Her knowledge stems from a prosecuting attorney to a judge for Boulder County and now as a criminal defense attorney. What I was not expecting, was to meet two people who are generally concerned for your well-being. In Care and Jake, I found not only two people so competent in navigating the justice system but also two people who only had the very best intentions on my part. They concluded my case quickly and efficiently within a very reasonable cost and I am so pleased with the result. Thank you Care and Jake! I am forever in your debt.

I came to Care with a legal issue and some confusion about my standing in the law. I consulted a couple other attorneys, over a couple years as I approached this life event. These consultations never cleared up, for me, where I stood in the law. In short order, Care assured me that where I stood was on firm legal footing and that my issue would be resolved. Working with Care was a pleasure. As she got to know me and my case, thoroughly, I was assured that she understood details of where I had been over many years. She also worked hard on getting resolution against quite difficult opposing attorneys. My issue was solved to my complete satisfaction. I recommend Care Enichen wholeheartedly and with no reservation.

Ms. Goodbody's services as a Child Legal Representative can be bought. She is corrupt, unprofessional and doesn't give a rat's a.. about the children involved. I was charged with DUI in Feb 2020. I refused breath alcohol tests and chemical test. I did not know back then that refusal would automatically get me 12pts on license, and a DUI charge. This was my first offense. I talked to Barry and hired him immediately. Barry is a great listener, he documents all that I mentioned, and he has a streamlined system for managing documents/paperwork for each client. I really liked the fact that Barry was available when I called initially and did a free consultation with me before onboarding me as a client. Due to COVID, my court dates kept moving out again and again. My final date to plead was almost 1 year after the charge. During this time, following Barry's advice, I had completed Level2 classes & counseling, MAD victim panel and had got a recommendation letter from my level2 counselor. Barry used his soft-skills and negotiated with the DA for a non-alcohol charge. The DA agreed to it and reduced my charge to 8pt reckless driving. On the final day of sentencing, the judge looked at DA recommendation and accepted it. The judge even waived all fines and fees because I had completed my level2 classes. My level2 counselor mentioned to me that this was an unheard of result. Most 1st time refusals usually get pled down to DWAI charges, but she had never had a case where it got pled down to non-alcohol charge. I cannot thank Barry enough for this great resolution. This was the scariest experience of my life and I felt Barry gave me good confidence and direction on how to proceed on each step of the way. He asked me to complete the level2 & MAD panels quickly so we can get a good agreement from the DA. And I think Barry has great negotiation skills, that he was able to get the DA to reduce the charges. If you are in this situation, I highly recommend hiring Barry to represent you. Don't try to deal with this yourself. You need a good lawyer. You need and a lawyer that has a good reputation of negotiating deals with the DA. You need a lawyer who is committed to take your case to trial if need be. You need a lawyer who has a reputation of winning cases for his clients. Barry checks all of these categories and I highly recommend him. Good luck!

I hired Steve because my case was complicated. I needed someone to do research on how is it a cop shows me a photo of the bumper of my car in contact with a beat up hyundai. I knew 100% that there was no way I did this. The charge: 12 pts. I hired Steve because he said he would visit the scene of the crime, so he could see the subsidized housing complex, the other cars in the street, a visual of the renters, and a good history of the car accidents on that road. He didnt make it over, he decides from the 911 call that the caller whom he'd never met was right and I was wrong . I felt trapped with an attorney who I had given 3000$ and he had promised one thing and did the other. In court he bargained down to 2 points telling me "This is a win". I couldn't believe it. I told him of a situation 2 yrs prior of being blamed for something, and was told I had to plead guilty. He said, "...and you don't want to do that again. ". Steve had left no time for us to converse recent events and driving history to give him a bigger picture. So I went from having a good driving history with an excellent insurance to having no insurance to drive anymore. I work in health care and a masters degree. I'm very aware, vigilant, and honest. I tried to pick an attorney who is similar. This didnt happen.

What a Domestic Violence Lawyer Can Do for You

A domestic violence lawyer provides legal assistance to individuals involved in cases of domestic abuse, whether you are a victim seeking protection or someone accused of domestic violence defending against the charges. These lawyers help with obtaining restraining orders (protective orders), representing clients in criminal court, and handling related family law issues such as child custody, divorce, and visitation rights.

If you are dealing with domestic violence, a lawyer can help protect your rights and navigate the legal system to ensure your safety or defend you if you’re falsely accused.

When Should I Hire a Domestic Violence Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a domestic violence lawyer if you are:

  • A Victim of Domestic Violence:
    • Filing for a protective order (restraining order): If you need immediate protection from an abuser, a lawyer can help you file for a protective order, which legally requires the abuser to stay away from you and refrain from contacting you.
    • Divorce or separation due to abuse: If domestic violence is a factor in your relationship, a lawyer can help you pursue a divorce or legal separation and ensure that you are protected throughout the process.
    • Child custody and visitation issues: A lawyer can help you secure custody of your children and limit or restrict the abuser’s visitation rights to protect the safety of your children.
    • Filing criminal charges: If you are pursuing criminal charges against the abuser, a domestic violence lawyer can work with law enforcement and prosecutors to ensure the case is handled properly.
    • Assistance with safety planning: A lawyer can advise on the legal steps to create a safety plan, including securing temporary housing, and taking steps to protect you and your family.
  • Accused of Domestic Violence:
    • Defending against criminal charges: If you’ve been accused of domestic violence, a lawyer can defend your case, challenge the evidence, and represent you in court. If possible, the lawyer can help get charges reduced or dismissed.
    • Challenging a restraining order: If someone has obtained a protective order against you, a lawyer can help you contest the order to prevent it from negatively impacting your life, including your employment and child custody rights.
    • Dealing with family law issues: Domestic violence allegations can affect child custody, divorce, and property division. A lawyer can represent your interests in family court and ensure that your parental rights are protected.
    • Avoiding criminal record implications: A lawyer can work to minimize the impact of the allegations on your record, which can affect your employment, housing, and future legal matters.

Hiring a lawyer at the earliest stages can help ensure your rights are protected and the case is handled effectively, whether you are seeking protection or defending against accusations.

What Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Do?

A domestic violence lawyer provides various legal services depending on the specifics of your case. These responsibilities often include:

  • For Victims:
    • Filing for protective orders: A lawyer can help victims of domestic violence obtain temporary or permanent restraining orders, which provide legal protection by restricting the abuser’s access to you and your children.
    • Representing you in divorce and child custody matters: Domestic violence often leads to divorce or separation, and a lawyer can represent you in family court to protect your assets, secure custody of your children, and arrange spousal and child support.
    • Criminal representation: Lawyers work with law enforcement and prosecutors to pursue criminal charges against the abuser, ensuring that you are informed and supported throughout the legal process.
    • Safety planning and legal advice: Lawyers provide advice on how to stay safe legally and can assist in securing temporary housing, providing guidance on how to leave abusive situations safely.
  • For the Accused:
    • Defending against charges: A lawyer will build a defense by investigating the case, gathering evidence, and challenging the claims made against you. If necessary, the lawyer can negotiate with prosecutors to reduce charges or penalties.
    • Challenging protective orders: If a restraining order has been placed against you, a lawyer can contest the order and present evidence to defend against it, aiming to minimize its impact on your life and reputation.
    • Handling related family law issues: Lawyers help defend against domestic violence allegations in divorce, child custody, and visitation disputes, working to protect your parental rights and reputation.
    • Preventing long-term consequences: A lawyer will work to protect you from the long-term consequences of a domestic violence conviction, such as a criminal record that could affect employment, housing, and more.

How Are Domestic Violence Lawyers Paid?

Domestic violence lawyers generally charge for their services in different ways depending on the case's complexity and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many domestic violence lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location. Hourly rates are common for both criminal defense and family law matters.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as filing a restraining order or defending against a straightforward domestic violence charge, some lawyers offer a flat fee that covers all legal work related to that service.
  • Retainer: In complex cases, such as those involving criminal charges, divorce, and custody disputes, a lawyer may require a retainer fee, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.
  • Pro bono or reduced fees: Some domestic violence lawyers provide pro bono (free) or reduced-fee services to victims of domestic abuse who cannot afford legal representation.

It’s important to discuss fees during your consultation to ensure you understand how much your case will cost and what payment options may be available.

How Much Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a domestic violence lawyer depends on the complexity of your case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal work required. General cost estimates include:

  • Restraining orders: The legal fees for filing a protective or restraining order typically range from $500 to $2,500, depending on whether the case requires a hearing.
  • Criminal defense: If you’re defending against domestic violence charges, legal fees may range from $2,500 to $15,000 or more, depending on whether the case goes to trial and the severity of the charges.
  • Family law issues: Legal fees for divorce, child custody, and other family law issues related to domestic violence can range from $3,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case.
  • Hourly rates: Domestic violence lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour for their services, with more experienced lawyers charging higher rates.

Always ask for a detailed cost estimate during your consultation to understand the total cost of legal services.

Top Questions to Ask a Domestic Violence Lawyer

Before hiring a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the right experience and approach for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with domestic violence cases?
Ensure that the lawyer has handled domestic violence cases similar to yours, whether you’re a victim or the accused.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, flat fees, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely outcome of my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Domestic violence cases vary in length, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what might cause delays.
  5. Will I need to appear in court?
Ask if your participation in court is required, and how the lawyer plans to represent you during hearings or trials.
  6. What steps should I take to protect myself or my rights?
Whether you’re a victim seeking protection or defending against allegations, ask the lawyer how they will help you navigate the situation.

How to Check the Credibility of a Domestic Violence Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable domestic violence lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for domestic violence experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in domestic violence cases and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients say about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have been involved in domestic violence cases.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Look for certifications or memberships in family law or domestic violence advocacy groups, such as the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • For Victims:
    • Details of the abuse: Prepare a detailed account of the abuse, including dates, locations, and descriptions of any injuries or threats.
    • Police reports and medical records: Bring copies of any police reports, medical records, or photographs that document the abuse.
    • Legal filings: If you have already filed for a restraining order or been involved in any legal proceedings, bring copies of those documents.
    • Questions about your safety and legal options: Be ready to ask about the best steps to protect yourself and your family, as well as what legal actions you should pursue.
  • For the Accused:
    • Details of the allegations: Prepare a detailed account of the incident or allegations against you, including any evidence or witnesses that support your defense.
    • Legal documents: Bring any legal documents you have received, such as a restraining order, criminal charges, or child custody filings.
    • Questions about your defense: Prepare questions about the legal process, possible penalties, and how the lawyer plans to defend your case.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation and provide the best possible legal advice.
