I don't even know where to begin. It's now been a little over a year since my husband and I made the call to Hallaq Law. It was the BEST decision we made and a huge burden was lifted! It was the end of 2022 and we were in so much debt after going from a 2 income household to 1 due to the pandemic. We thought we'd be able to catch up on paying our bills that was accumulated but we were stuck. I vividly remember googling Law Firms in my area and Hallaq Law was at the top of the list. After reading the reviews, my husband and I discussed our options and made the call. It took us a while to finally get the ball rolling, but Brian and Diem walked us through the whole process and was always available when we had questions. It's long over due, but I wanted to THANK Brian and Diem for their guidance during the whole process. Look no further, Brian and Diem are the best and we can't thank them enough.

Attorney Palmer was referred to me by an attorney here in Connecticut that I work closely with. I needed an attorney familiar with Elder Care & Trust issues as well as someone who could be trusted to work with me from a distance since the action took place in Seattle & I live in CT. John went out of his way to keep me informed prior to our mediation hearing on an ongoing basis. He reviewed volumes of documents and was instrumental in helping me formulate an informed decision on what path I should follow during our mediation hearing. John worked diligently throughout the 14 hour process discussing options with the other 4 parties attorneys. With his help a settlement was reached that was agreeable to all parties and one that was very close to my preferred outcome. I would highly recommend Attorney John Palmer!

John Palmer came to my family's rescue on handling and updating guardianship paperwork. He and his staff assisted in coordinating paperwork and legal documents between a couple of states. John was very knowledgeable. He revealed gray areas and made certain our documentation was airtight in the best interest of both parties. I highly recommend John Palmer.

Stephan Waltar is very knowledgeable and experienced in estate planning. He is the author of two books on the subject, both of which I read and found to be clearly written and very helpful. I felt that he wrote these books because he truly cared about people being well protected and informed. He and his staff were easy to communicate with, any questions were answered fully and we received prompt responses to any emails. We were provided with a 3" binder made personal for us that clearly organized all of our info and documents on our estate planning, medical directives, power of attorney, ect. A digital copy is kept securely as well. We felt like it was money well spent to have our estate set up by a legal expert rather than a one size fits all computer program. it is complicated and it is essential that it be done properly. When we were at our bank to transfer our account, the manager had to call the legal department to walk her thru the process, as even for someone who works in the financial field it was complicated. One our side we had been provided by Mr. Waltar's office with all the correct legal documents and it was easy. In the future as laws change it is also good to know that we have a legal expert to confer with who will keep us updated and our plans on track.

We were referred to Craig from our corporate law firm. He was very responsive in returning our call. He made it a pleasure extending hospitality with a glass of champagne which helped break the awkwardness of talking about delicate subjects. Thank you Steve we do appreciate your help and guidance.

My parents and I have been clients of attorney Andrea Lee for many years. She has prepared legal documents for me and many of my friends and family, and I recommend her to everyone! Not only is she very knowlegeable, caring and insightful, but she takes the time to ensure all of our questions have been answered. I first met Andrea when my father became ill, and she helped me and my Mom plan for his decline due to Alzheimer's disease. Without Andrea's help my Mom would have lost all of her money (and her sanity) taking care of my Dad, but Andrea was able to save some of my parents estate, and my Mom was able to stay in her home. I honestly don't know what we would have done without her. When you meet Andrea you can tell she really cares about her clients.

In July 2023 I was hit by a car that didn’t stop. I reached out to Premier Law Group because I had met a lawyer there in a workout class and she was so nice that I decided to give them a chance. They did a phenomenal job on my case. I never once felt taken advantage of, lied too or deceived. Jason and his whole team were great at communicating and keeping me in the loop but most importantly they were honest and treated me like a human at one of the lowest points of my life. I cannot say thank you enough and I will always recommend people to use Premier Law Group!!

Premier Law Group did something for me nobody in my entire life has done. That’s believing in me, and caring about my health first. The moment I met Jonathan Lee he made it clear he wanted to see me healthy and able to live an active life with my daughters. He encouraged me to listen to my body because I only get one. In doing so for the first time in my life I’m moving around happier, in less pain, and with some more cheese in my back pocket. I give glory to god first always, but Premier Law Group gave me hope on my low days, and brought in more joy on happy ones. The money on the back end is nice, having your medical bills paid is nice. But when people believe in you and genuinely want to see you reach your full potential. Well you can’t put a price tag on that it doesn't came around too often. Give Jonathan Lee a call at Premier Law Group let him handle the parts of your life that you can’t.

My elderly parents hired Rick for estate planning with myself as Trustee for the estate trust. After my mothers passing I discovered that Rick had set up numerous LLC's and a labyrinth trust web that was so complex for their meager estate it was laughable. also he had interjected himself into the trusts complexity so there was really no way out other than to keep him on through closing out the Estate. through out the process Rick appeared arrogant, overbearing, blustery and uncooperative. all there were many errors - one such instance was in his attempt to clear up a title matter related to my parents house he inadvertent recorded documents transferring the neighbors house into my parents name. the first words out of his month was I didn't feel comfortable doing that but that was what the title company told me to do .............. Avoid this person

Rick Gregorek was almost prophetic in his care of my elderly father. He prepared everything, and I mean everything, ahead of time so Dad was completely prepared when the "Fly-Bys" showed up (distant relatives who contribute nothing, complain about everything, and swoop in at the end for the cash). Rick saw the red flags long before Dad or I did and he prepared Dad meticulously. There is no doubt that Dad would have ended up in a nursing home had Rick not been so diligent. We spent a lot of time selecting the right lawyer and it payed off. It was not just his knowledge of the law, but his understanding of human nature in all its forms that sets him apart. For these reasons I unequivocally give Rick Gregorek my highest recommendation. A+++

Rick over the last 4-5 years has been and continues to be instrumental in our estate planning process including establishing multiple Trust(s) and being a Trustee. He also helped us move a Trust to Washington State from a previous location within the US. Rick is extremely knowledgeable and we have never felt uncomfortable with his suggestions and insight into the legal and moral values during the process. This is especially true regarding family and the special circumstances which at times may arise. He listens well taking into account each aspect one may bring to the table and will make every effort to explore and find a solution. Rick also brings expertise in the field of estate taxes and how to best address specific issues. If Rick does not know the answer he and his staff will make every effort to find one. Rick is good with being responsive and keeping us informed. If we need to send a follow up inquiry to a question he will get back to us within the next 12 to 24 hours. I know he is busy! Overall, we have the utmost trust and faith in Rick's ability to provide quality service and value to such important issues as estate planning including multi-generational trust and financial/tax issues. Rick I believe is an excellent attorney and of good character.

My wife and I needed a fairly complex estate package (involving foreign countries). Ms Andrea Hardin was referred to us by one of my MSFT colleagues. She was able to go through all of the components of the estate plans for me and my family. She went and extra mile to explain things to us that were new and unknown (and there are many!) We are happy and comfortable knowing that our affairs are in order. When the opportunity came to purchase a new home, we called Ms Hardin again. She was as kind as the first time and very very patient with us. She went through every page of every document and found a lot of inconsistencies in the materials proposed by the selling party. We felt well protected and taken care of by such an accomplished attorney. Thank you, Ms Hardin! We will get back to you for the attorney support when the time comes to sell our house in the future. Thank you again!

She appears to be a very intelligent attorney, but she insults almost everyone she interacts with. We were very disappointed in the transaction, and will no longer use her.

We Will Not Return Ms. Hardin is a competent attorney with a well-established practice; however, her professional demeanor (or rather the lack thereof) made us extremely uncomfortable in her office. The condescending attitude she exhibited towards her paralegal during our meeting was both astonishing and disappointing. When we left Ms. Hardin's office, my husband and I both agreed that we would not return based on her behavior. How someone treats their subordinates is an excellent gauge of character. There are many attorneys in the Puget Sound area who are fully competent in this area of law AND treat others with respect. It might well benefit Ms. Hardin if she remembered that fact. We will not return to Ms. Hardin's office nor will we recommend this attorney to fellow peers.

On Nick's bio page of his law firms website the very first line states how he helps transition wealth to the next generation. This is plainly untrue. I am one of those next gen individuals with an inheritance and an estate and Nick has done nothing but the exact opposite of what he claims. Other than sitting back and billing me out of my inheritance, he also isn't moving forward with an offer submitted to the home left to me and is forcing the house into foreclosure! Why would anyone do that? Nick has been completely unhelpful in transition the inheritance to me, is purposely slowing the process to bill more, and has been deceitful to me throughout the entire process. I used to believe in Nick too when he help my then alive grandmother with a guardianship case but after her passing it's like he stopped caring about anything or anyone else but himself and his bank account. I do not recommend this lawyer. If you find yourself reading this, be warned!

What an Elder Law Lawyer Can Do for You

An elder law lawyer specializes in legal issues that affect older adults, their families, and caregivers. These lawyers handle a broad range of topics, including estate planning, Medicaid and Medicare, long-term care planning, guardianship, elder abuse, and retirement planning. The goal of an elder law lawyer is to protect the rights, finances, and well-being of elderly individuals and to help them plan for future healthcare and financial security.

If you or a loved one is aging and facing challenges related to healthcare, finances, or legal matters, an elder law lawyer can provide essential guidance to protect your rights and interests as you age.

When Should I Hire an Elder Law Lawyer?

Hiring an elder law lawyer can be beneficial in many situations where older adults need help with legal, financial, or healthcare-related decisions. Common reasons to hire an elder law lawyer include:

  • Estate planning: If you want to create or update a will, set up trusts, or ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes, an elder law lawyer can help with comprehensive estate planning.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: If you need help qualifying for Medicaid to cover long-term care or need advice on navigating Medicare benefits, a lawyer can guide you through the application process and protect your assets.
  • Long-term care planning: If you’re concerned about paying for nursing home care or assisted living, a lawyer can help you create a financial plan and explore options for government assistance.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If a family member is unable to make decisions due to age-related cognitive issues, an elder law lawyer can assist in setting up legal guardianship or conservatorship to ensure their care.
  • Elder abuse and exploitation: If you or a loved one is experiencing physical, emotional, or financial abuse, an elder law lawyer can help you take legal action to stop the abuse and recover damages.
  • Retirement planning: Elder law lawyers can assist with planning for retirement, including managing pensions, Social Security, and other retirement income.
  • Special needs planning: If you have a disabled family member who requires special care, an elder law lawyer can help create trusts or other legal arrangements to ensure their long-term financial and healthcare needs are met.

What Does an Elder Law Lawyer Do?

An elder law lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help older adults and their families navigate the complexities of aging, healthcare, and estate planning. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Drafting wills and trusts: Creating legal documents that outline how an individual’s assets will be distributed after death, ensuring that their wishes are honored.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: Helping clients protect their assets while qualifying for government benefits to cover healthcare and long-term care costs.
  • Establishing guardianships: Assisting families in setting up guardianship or conservatorship for loved ones who are unable to make decisions due to mental or physical incapacity.
  • Protecting against elder abuse: Investigating claims of elder abuse or financial exploitation and representing the victim in legal actions to stop the abuse and seek compensation.
  • Planning for long-term care: Developing strategies to cover the costs of nursing homes, assisted living, and other long-term care options without exhausting the elder’s financial resources.
  • Managing probate and estate administration: Guiding families through the probate process to ensure that the decedent’s assets are distributed according to the law and their wishes.
  • Setting up advance directives: Helping clients establish healthcare directives and powers of attorney to ensure their medical and financial decisions are carried out if they become incapacitated.

How Are Elder Law Lawyers Paid?

Elder law lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many elder law lawyers charge by the hour, especially for tasks such as drafting documents, handling legal disputes, or providing ongoing legal advice. Hourly rates typically range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as drafting a will or setting up a trust, some lawyers charge a flat fee. This can range from $500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the estate plan.
  • Retainer: For long-term legal representation, such as managing a trust or handling guardianship matters, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal work.
  • Contingency fee: In some elder abuse or financial exploitation cases, a lawyer may work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they recover compensation for the client. This fee is typically a percentage of the settlement or damages awarded.

Be sure to discuss fees with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how you will be billed and what the total cost of services might be.

How Much Does an Elder Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an elder law lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estate planning: Drafting basic documents, such as a will or power of attorney, may cost between $500 and $2,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s assets and wishes.
  • Complex estate planning: Setting up more advanced estate plans, such as revocable or irrevocable trusts, Medicaid planning, or special needs trusts, can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: Legal fees for setting up guardianship or conservatorship often range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and whether disputes arise.
  • Medicaid planning: Legal fees for Medicaid planning can range from $1,500 to $10,000, depending on the level of asset protection needed and the complexity of the individual’s financial situation.

Always ask for an estimate of fees during your initial consultation to ensure you understand how much the legal services will cost.

Top Questions to Ask an Elder Law Lawyer

Before hiring an elder law lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise needed to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with elder law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's estate planning, Medicaid applications, or elder abuse claims.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the best approach for my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your situation and what legal strategies the lawyer recommends.
  4. How long will the process take?
Whether it’s drafting an estate plan or setting up a guardianship, ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents should I bring to the consultation?
Ask the lawyer what documentation or information you should prepare for your consultation, such as medical records, financial statements, or prior legal documents.

How to Check the Credibility of an Elder Law Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable elder law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for elder law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in elder law and have experience with cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on elder law issues.
  • Check for certifications: Look for certifications or affiliations with organizations such as the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), which can indicate the lawyer’s dedication to elder law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with an elder law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Existing estate planning documents: If you have a will, trust, or power of attorney in place, bring copies for the lawyer to review.
  • Financial records: Provide details of your assets, including bank accounts, investments, real estate, and retirement accounts, as well as any debts.
  • Medical information: If the case involves guardianship or Medicaid planning, bring relevant medical records that detail the individual's health condition and care needs.
  • Insurance policies: Bring information about health insurance, long-term care insurance, and any other relevant policies.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about your legal needs, the process, and the lawyer’s fees.
  • List of family members or beneficiaries: Prepare a list of the individuals you want to include in your estate plan or who will be affected by the legal process.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and receive the best legal advice tailored to your needs.
