Roy Law Group helped our family win a difficult disability case. We couldn't have managed the amount of work ourselves, so the help was critical and invaluable.

First and foremost, my wife and I are extremely appreciative of the Roy Law Group. They are now family to us and we could not have dealt with the insurance company alone. The people that work for Roy Law Group took us on and walked us through every step of the long process. I wish we could recommend them higher than this review. Our story of "why" we recommend Roy Law Group. My wife suffers from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) as a result of a horrific automobile accident and epilepsy. At first, her short term employment disability kicked in without any issues. We noticed a change in the disability insurance as my wife's treatments continued past the six month mark. We were told by the insurance company she was not going to receive long-term disability. The insurance company lied stating long-term disability was not selected for her at time of employment. Being she has TBI it was very difficult for her to understand what was happening. I had to do the work to find her original employment signing paperwork showing she had signed up, checked the box, and paid for this service. This was the first time we realized the insurance company was not here to "help" my wife. During this stage we received many complicated paperwork assignments from the insurance company and threats she was going to be dropped from coverage. You could feel the insurance company just wanted us to give up so they could save money. They do not care about your actual wellbeing. We did not give up like they wanted us to do. Months prior to the one year mark the threats became real as the insurance company randomly sent my wife a denial of coverage letter. They gave a ridiculous reason stating they felt she was fine now and was dropping her from long-term coverage again. Mind you, she had only been on long-term disability for a few months. Even though she was still receiving medical services and had multiple doctors stating the opposite. We did not accept the insurance games anymore and looked for help. Thankfully we talked with the Row Law Group. They are amazing people from the start and tell you up front what they will do. No false promises, as they walk you through realistically if they were able or not able to help and why. Luckily for us they saw what the insurance company was doing and had dealt with this same company many times. I love the fact they listen to your situation and you know they are in the fight with you. I have never seen complete strangers be an advocate for the truth and justice like the Row Law Group is. Over the process I could not imagine anyone else doing such an amazing tailored job to our situation as them. We have now had my wife's long term disabilities reinstated and now moving forward the insurance company has to still deal with our protectors the Row Law Group. If you are going through the ringer and fighting with an insurance company over short/long-term disability just stop the stress and fight alone. Don't delay like we did just CALL Row Law Group now. I wish we had called them earlier and my wife would not have had to cry or worry as much during the earliest stages of the fight. Our family is so grateful to the Row Law Group.

Stephanie and her team helped our elderly parents navigate the estate planning process with ease. She provided professional guidance to our family in consideration of Medicaid, a reverse mortgage, and veterans' benefits -- all very daunting tasks for the "Regular Joe". Her company is so aptly named because her compassion shone through at every step of the way -- including coming to our parents' home for meetings and signings, and visiting our father while he was in hospice. Without Stephanie and her team, our family would not have been as prepared as we were for essential legal decisions at the end of our father's life. For my sisters and myself, it was truly a gift that my parents had the foresight to plan and that we found Stephanie to be the one to make those plans happen. To our family, she is a true professional with a big heart and we are so very grateful.

Stephanie is a truly compassionate lawyer. She listens to her clients and goes out of her way to fulfill their wishes. She is fun to work with, and very good at explaining all of the intricacies of estate planning and making it understandable. We really enjoyed working with Stephanie, and found the whole process to be very painless. She is a genuinely kind and caring person, and that comes out in her work.

Alexandra "Xana" helped me as a single father retain 50/50 custody of my two children. My ex-wife and mother of our two children decided that after 8 years of being divorced in another state that she would paint a completely untrue picture of me as an abusive, alcoholic and unfit father. Since the children's parenting plan was from another state, that added to the complexity of the case. My ex-wife hired an attorney from a "prestigious" Bellevue family law firm that has profiles of countless lawyers on their website. Her lawyer asked for three different emergency injunctions due to child safety. All three were rejected by multiple judges! The difference between Xana and the Bellevue law firms lawyer is that Xana uses facts, the laws and the truth. This case lasted nearly a year, and was the worst experience of my life. It was not cheap and emotionally exhausting to say the least. Xana was always there to answer my questions and give me guidance. The Bellevue law firm and my ex-wife decided to request a dismissal of the case because Xana was more prepared, more knowledgeable and ultimately a better lawyer. If you need a family law lawyer, Xana is the best there is in the Puget Sound!

I have worked with numerous attorneys and “Xana” is a 10 out 10. I had a very complicated case with the custody of a special needs adult daughter. It required knowledge of family law (involving stipulations from out of state), guardianship law, and special needs law. Finding someone knowledgeable in these separate pillars is very rare. I was very impressed in how “Xana” quickly got her arms around the key issues, and developed a comprehensive strategy to counter the opposing council’s motions. I was very impressed with her knowledge of the new and emerging laws (in these areas), and how we could take advantage of them. “Xana” is a very smart, creative, and compassionate person. It was a real pleasure to work with her and her staff. I would not have prevailed without her.

Alexandra ("Xana") represented me through my divorce, and was someone who I could rely on not just for legal advice, but also to keep the focus on the underlying issues, and help dial down the emotions when the other side would make aggressive moves that were simply not child-centric. At many points, it was a draining journey and she was a rock steady resource. She truly has an encylopedic knowledge of the law and one thing that helped to keep the many loose ends tied down was to have her assistant keep a punch list of the items that were in play. Certainly, you'll benefit from Xana representing you and providing the right context about the implications of a given situation.

I hired Mr. Parker initially for estate planning services, and then again later to help settle an unrelated estate case. Throughout both processes he proved to be passionate about the law, and a reliable source of truth. He is easy to work with and provides a friendly and honest demeanor. When I've had questions, he's been easy to reach, and repeatedly provided realistic counsel that I believe kept my best interests at heart. I'm a repeat client and I would absolutely hire him again if needed.

I hired Matthew Parker to deal with estate planning for my family as it relates to assets/property both in state as well as out of state. Matthew was timely and collaborative in working with an out of state lawyer, and he did so efficiently so there was limited back-and-forth. He was was very helpful in identifying critical information we needed to properly navigate both elder law and tax implications as it relates to two different states (federal and state tax questions). Matthew had most of this information immediately available on consult, and he followed through within a couple of days for the information that needed to be confirmed and passed on to those in another state. Overall, I found Matthew's demeanor to be pleasant and warm. He clearly is very sharp with a strong command of elder law. He communicated well both verbally and through his emails, and he took the time to explain the legalese terms that took longer for me to understand. Cost was reasonable, and for the help he provided, actually a bargain. I would not hesitate to utilize Matthew's services again.

Most lawyers I have dealt with are slimey, more ready to count the minutes in your calls and emails than listen or care for what you have to say. Marc goes above and beyond the call, his consultations are second to none. Most importantly though I felt like he valued me as a lifelong client more so than a "one time paycheck" If I ever need help in his field again, he is the first person I will be calling.

Through Linda’s legal representation, the court awarded me custody of my grandson. My grandson was living with me to avoid the abuse he experienced in his own home. This was a particularly challenging situation for many major reasons. (1) My grandson’s divorced parents lived in another state, which created legal complications for obtaining guardianship. (2) We had no “hard” evidence of my grandson’s abuse with his family due to his living 100’s of miles away. (3) Social services in his home state wanted to reunite my grandson with his father, who was his primary abuser. (4) For several hearings, as long as his mother phoned into the court, I was not granted custody of my grandson. Linda not only did the legal work with the court system, she worked as an intermediary for me in numerous discussions with my grandson’s parents. This combination of legal skills and acumen resulted in my having permanent third-party custody of my grandson. He will have the safe life I promised him by growing up in my home.

This review is for Sharon Perlin who is an Attorney at Flaccus Law. It's easy to have an estate plan written. It's also easy to put off having an estate plan written, or in my case, updated. Ten years ago we managed to write estate documents including wills, health care directives, organ donor instructions, burial instructions and other estate planning documents, but ten years later, despite job changes, a new house, investments, etc. they had never been updated. And, while I suppose out of date documents are better than no documents at all, as we prepared to head on an extended vacation to a sometimes unstable part of the world, we thought maybe this is a good time to update everything. The first time we did our estate documents it was at one of the fancy downtown law firms and while we were perfectly happy with the outcome, you couldn't help but be aware of the setting and the fact that every half hour meant another $150 to the bill. This time around we made a conscious decision that we wanted to stay away from the high priced, high rise firms and find someone in our neighborhood who could provide personalized care and advice in a more casual and affordable way. Meeting with Sharon for the first time we immediately felt comfortable. She is warm and friendly and as we started talking about our estate documents and our objectives for updating them, it was also clear that she is very knowledgeable. Sharon also has that important ability to take complex legal concepts and distil them down to layman's terms. At that initial meeting and subsequent conversations Sharon took us through a thorough recap of all the elements of our current documents and, section by section, walked us through changes we might consider and why. Her suggestions were based on sound logic and at all times we felt like our estate planning goals were front of mind. The entire process took a few weeks with the final visit to Sharon's office to actually sign the new documents. As we were just about to take off on our vacation, Sharon was gracious enough to mail hard copies to our estate executor. Taking the time to create an estate plan is a responsibility that all adults should take seriously. There is simply no reason that anyone should ever pass without having their estate in order. Don't have an estate plan? Need to have your estate plan updated? I would wholeheartedly recommend Sharon. I would also not hesitate to use her for any of the other legal areas that she specializes in, including trusts, probate and probate litigation, guardianships, and IRS tax controversies.

I don't know where to begin when I explain how amazing of an attorney Anne is. There was so much more going on behind the scenes than I ever realized. With and at times without my knowing, she went above and beyond in s many ways. She actually takes time whether it's Labor Day weekend, any weekend or evening to get back to you and thoroughly answer your questions (which I have a lot of by the way) - She truly cares and is interested in you as a client not just for monies, she's organized, prompt, very motivated and even with her many years of experience, still carries the passion for justice. I can't say enough about how fantastic she is. What I personally liked best about her is that she's down to earth and plain cool! Not at all some stuck up attorney who thinks they're on a higher level of life than you. What else can I say? She's awesome in every single way. I highly recommend Anne to any and everyone that needs a standup, caring attorney that's plain AWESOME in the courtroom. Thank you Anne!

Admittedly I have no comparison to make as I’ve never been involved with any type of legal issues, but I will say this experience was highly disappointing. After providing a binder full of documentation, photos, X-rays, and more documentation with little next to no contact (unless initiated by me) the waiting game began and continued until today when I received an email informing me they would not handle my case. This was after being told they would, with a full explanation of how things would proceed, the cost breakdown, and an agreement to not have contact in regards to this case with anyone outside of the Puget Law Group. My first contact with Puget Law Group was in August of last year, 2023. All documentation, etc. was done by early December, treatment was completed in October and I was told they needed nothing more from me. That was nearly 9 months ago. Unbelievable at best considering nothing about this situation changed and to be given the most generic excuse is inexcusable.

We are contemplating a move back to Washington state where we lived for many years. Without proper estate planning we would potentially be subject to the Washington estate tax. n our initial contacts with the firm, we clearly identified that we were residents in another state. We were instructed to provide our detailed financial picture as well as our current estate planning documents which we provided promptly and told that our information would be forwarded to the attorneys for evaluation. The following is the email response. “Thank you for filling out and returning your Questionnaire. I will forward your information to our attorneys for review. Once they have completed their review, I will be back in touch with you regarding a quote for services and the next steps for scheduling.” Well over a month went by with no word back from STIB. I finally contacted them by email requesting a status update. Within minutes, I received the following reply. “Thank you very much for contacting our firm. Unfortunately, we are not able to take on your case. Our firm does not advise out-of-state residents on tax issues. Our focus is estate planning and long term care planning.” The STIB website clearly tax issues as part of estate planning. I also found no restrictions on attorneys in Washington state providing consultation to out-of-state residents considering residency in Washington. Needless to say, I was astounded by what I consider to extremely poor communication and timely follow-up. If it is indeed not their policy to advise out-of-state residents on tax issues, I would have expected to have been informed of that policy up front thus saving us the time of compiling and sending detailed and confidential financial and estate planning information. In my opinion, this represents incompetent and totally unprofessional behavior.

Angela gave us clear, useful and compassionate legal advice on our very complicated situation. She was flexible with her time when we needed to reschedule. She went above & beyond by exploring issues we hadn't thought of and had not raised in our original request. This is our first time seeking legal advice on something like this - our experience couldn't have been better. Thank you Angela

What an Elder Law Lawyer Can Do for You

An elder law lawyer specializes in legal issues that affect older adults, their families, and caregivers. These lawyers handle a broad range of topics, including estate planning, Medicaid and Medicare, long-term care planning, guardianship, elder abuse, and retirement planning. The goal of an elder law lawyer is to protect the rights, finances, and well-being of elderly individuals and to help them plan for future healthcare and financial security.

If you or a loved one is aging and facing challenges related to healthcare, finances, or legal matters, an elder law lawyer can provide essential guidance to protect your rights and interests as you age.

When Should I Hire an Elder Law Lawyer?

Hiring an elder law lawyer can be beneficial in many situations where older adults need help with legal, financial, or healthcare-related decisions. Common reasons to hire an elder law lawyer include:

  • Estate planning: If you want to create or update a will, set up trusts, or ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes, an elder law lawyer can help with comprehensive estate planning.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: If you need help qualifying for Medicaid to cover long-term care or need advice on navigating Medicare benefits, a lawyer can guide you through the application process and protect your assets.
  • Long-term care planning: If you’re concerned about paying for nursing home care or assisted living, a lawyer can help you create a financial plan and explore options for government assistance.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If a family member is unable to make decisions due to age-related cognitive issues, an elder law lawyer can assist in setting up legal guardianship or conservatorship to ensure their care.
  • Elder abuse and exploitation: If you or a loved one is experiencing physical, emotional, or financial abuse, an elder law lawyer can help you take legal action to stop the abuse and recover damages.
  • Retirement planning: Elder law lawyers can assist with planning for retirement, including managing pensions, Social Security, and other retirement income.
  • Special needs planning: If you have a disabled family member who requires special care, an elder law lawyer can help create trusts or other legal arrangements to ensure their long-term financial and healthcare needs are met.

What Does an Elder Law Lawyer Do?

An elder law lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help older adults and their families navigate the complexities of aging, healthcare, and estate planning. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Drafting wills and trusts: Creating legal documents that outline how an individual’s assets will be distributed after death, ensuring that their wishes are honored.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: Helping clients protect their assets while qualifying for government benefits to cover healthcare and long-term care costs.
  • Establishing guardianships: Assisting families in setting up guardianship or conservatorship for loved ones who are unable to make decisions due to mental or physical incapacity.
  • Protecting against elder abuse: Investigating claims of elder abuse or financial exploitation and representing the victim in legal actions to stop the abuse and seek compensation.
  • Planning for long-term care: Developing strategies to cover the costs of nursing homes, assisted living, and other long-term care options without exhausting the elder’s financial resources.
  • Managing probate and estate administration: Guiding families through the probate process to ensure that the decedent’s assets are distributed according to the law and their wishes.
  • Setting up advance directives: Helping clients establish healthcare directives and powers of attorney to ensure their medical and financial decisions are carried out if they become incapacitated.

How Are Elder Law Lawyers Paid?

Elder law lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many elder law lawyers charge by the hour, especially for tasks such as drafting documents, handling legal disputes, or providing ongoing legal advice. Hourly rates typically range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as drafting a will or setting up a trust, some lawyers charge a flat fee. This can range from $500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the estate plan.
  • Retainer: For long-term legal representation, such as managing a trust or handling guardianship matters, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal work.
  • Contingency fee: In some elder abuse or financial exploitation cases, a lawyer may work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they recover compensation for the client. This fee is typically a percentage of the settlement or damages awarded.

Be sure to discuss fees with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how you will be billed and what the total cost of services might be.

How Much Does an Elder Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an elder law lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estate planning: Drafting basic documents, such as a will or power of attorney, may cost between $500 and $2,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s assets and wishes.
  • Complex estate planning: Setting up more advanced estate plans, such as revocable or irrevocable trusts, Medicaid planning, or special needs trusts, can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: Legal fees for setting up guardianship or conservatorship often range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and whether disputes arise.
  • Medicaid planning: Legal fees for Medicaid planning can range from $1,500 to $10,000, depending on the level of asset protection needed and the complexity of the individual’s financial situation.

Always ask for an estimate of fees during your initial consultation to ensure you understand how much the legal services will cost.

Top Questions to Ask an Elder Law Lawyer

Before hiring an elder law lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise needed to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with elder law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's estate planning, Medicaid applications, or elder abuse claims.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the best approach for my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your situation and what legal strategies the lawyer recommends.
  4. How long will the process take?
Whether it’s drafting an estate plan or setting up a guardianship, ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents should I bring to the consultation?
Ask the lawyer what documentation or information you should prepare for your consultation, such as medical records, financial statements, or prior legal documents.

How to Check the Credibility of an Elder Law Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable elder law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for elder law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in elder law and have experience with cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on elder law issues.
  • Check for certifications: Look for certifications or affiliations with organizations such as the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), which can indicate the lawyer’s dedication to elder law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with an elder law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Existing estate planning documents: If you have a will, trust, or power of attorney in place, bring copies for the lawyer to review.
  • Financial records: Provide details of your assets, including bank accounts, investments, real estate, and retirement accounts, as well as any debts.
  • Medical information: If the case involves guardianship or Medicaid planning, bring relevant medical records that detail the individual's health condition and care needs.
  • Insurance policies: Bring information about health insurance, long-term care insurance, and any other relevant policies.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about your legal needs, the process, and the lawyer’s fees.
  • List of family members or beneficiaries: Prepare a list of the individuals you want to include in your estate plan or who will be affected by the legal process.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and receive the best legal advice tailored to your needs.
