Jesse Taylor was a very professional and knowledgeable young man. This was my first time ever going to court and the first time I’ve ever had to hire a lawyer. He was very understanding with my lack of knowledge about how the whole system works and took his time to explain to me in detail what I needed to do and when I needed to do things. My case was completed swiftly and I even got a lesser charge than what I was initially expecting. Overall I am extremely happy with the services provided by my lawyer.

Suzanne Land and I were first introduced through a mutual friend, after my husband's death. I engaged her to assist me with matters related to closing the marital estate, which was comprised of several companies and employed over 300 people at the time. The estate was very complicated and there were many challenges. I had no previous experience running a business or engaging an attorney or negotiating a contract. Everything about the process of closing down my husband's estate was stressful and frightening. I was emotionally brittle and Suzanne experienced my personality shifts with grace, compassion and understanding. She was always caring and always patient. Suzanne had the incredible ability to take very complex issues and explain them in a way that was easy to comprehend. This was so comforting to me as I moved through this process to conclusion. Here is an example that highlights her talent. The companies in the estate were being overcharged by a consulting firm on multiple invoices over months. I asked her to review a recent invoice sent and she quickly marked the entries where the hours billed were duplication of effort and the bill was cut in half. She took the time to explain the invoice to me so I could see how those hours were logged and where the duplication occurred, so I could speak to the company with confidence when I insisted they reduce the bill by 50%. They reduced the bill by half and I saved thousands of dollars. Suzanne suggested ways to protect my assets, revised my will, established my family and personal trusts, even created an education trust for my son to safeguard the money I wanted earmarked for college. She is intelligent, extremely competent, detail oriented and possesses the sharpest instincts in all matters of business. I feel safe because she has handled my estate and when I pass away I know my son will be in capable hands, as she guides him through this passage of life. When you call for an appointment, she is prompt to call you back and will often come to you. That is personalized service I appreciate. Suzanne is a great legal talent, but more than that, she is willing to go the extra mile. My son was 8 when I met her, but when he was 20 and thinking of a career in law, I asked Suzanne if she would have lunch with him to talk about law schools, answer questions and share insights from her career. She didn't hesitate to give up her personal time to meet with him and encourage him, to discuss which law schools offered the best programs, and all the opportunities he could pursue in this career after graduation. My son found her advice extremely worthwhile. He so appreciated her going out of her way to do this for him. It is great to know people like her still exist. She has integrity, character and compassion. Suzanne is the whole package.

My husband and I first came to Suzanne about 15 years ago for estate planning, based on her outstanding reputation. We also knew through others that Suzanne worked with a number of high net worth individuals, and we decide that if they could trust her, then so could we. In working with Suzanne, we found her to be detailed and thorough, as well as highly approachable and easy to understand. She made it a point to get to know our circumstance so that she could craft documents that truly suited our needs, rather than using boilerplate documents, as some other attorneys do. Over the years, our estate plan has suited us well, and we have only needed to make changes as our needs have changed. Over the years, we also found that Suzanne was able to provide us with legal advice and connections regarding our businesses, and this has been invaluable. Overall, we cannot recommend Suzanne highly enough for the sound advice that she provides and the quality of work she delivers.

Mr. Sheil was a blessing to me and made a huge difference in my television program the Chuck Land Show. He has handled most of the legal matters which exist when producing televison content. I hired him to write contracts and provide legal advice to help protect my company Landman Productions LLC which produces the show. Due to hiring him as my attorney, I feel very comfortable knowing that I am good hands. Not only is he very knowledge, but he's also an amazing human being, which is rare these days.

Carrie Waide did an incredible job with my daughter's custody case. Her expertise, dedication, and compassion were unwavering, and ultimately resulted in a favorable outcome for my daughter. Carrie was extremely responsive, proactive, and prioritized my daughter's well-being throughout the process. I really couldn't have asked for a better attorney to represent us through one of the most difficult times in our lives. Her experience as a magistrate gives her a unique perspective in advising clients in both litigated and collaborative matters. Carrie truly takes the time to understand her clients’ goals and interests to assess their needs to determine an appropriate course of action to reach the best possible outcome for their family. I'm immensely grateful for Carrie's guidance and highly recommend her to anyone seeking representation in family court.

This past year to year and a half I have had a lot of issues with my ex-wife. To the point that I filed numerous motions of contempt against her and she filed 1 against me. Ultimately we were told to find the services of a GAL to try and help figure out what is best for the children. The GAL we had could not be bothered to verbally speak to teachers at the children's schools even though she was asked to numerous times. When she finally did reach out to the school to verbally speak to anyone she still didn't speak to the teachers that were asked of her. Instead she sent questionnaires based on what she thought should be asked I guess. I called this GAL numerous times and left voicemails without a single call back. I feel as though the GAL was extremely bias as in she kept putting in her reports that she understands why mom feels this way or she can see the reasons behind this but completely disregarded anything mom did to dad. The GAL didn't even call witnesses until right before the original report was due and didn't put any of this in the report but I guess she only did the calls so she could say she did and bill for it. My ex-wife and I had to go through mediation per court order in which the GAL talked about being professional with the mediator and said that we need to reply within 24 hours of messages. According to this our GAL is unprofessional. The GAL tried to change my schedule even though mom works from home and has an extremely flexible job where as I don't and i have a rotating day job. The day of court my ex-wife sent me a message that was completely inappropriate and the GAL came and talked to me saying i need to be more clear with what I need even though I asked for the whole bill that i need to see exactly what this is for (obviously a bill that we had to share the cost of.) I would not recommend this law firm for anything if they operate anything like the GAL did. The GAL didn't have where my son was born correctly in the report, called me by a different name at one point in the report, and just didn't seem to be bothered with actually getting any information from third parties or myself. Lack of communication, professionalism, and the inability to look for whats best for the children was truly sad.

Jeffrey is the absolute BEST attorney anyone could hire. I was referred to him by a friend and I am so grateful for everything Jeffrey did to help me. My ex-fiancé who lived with me broke things off suddenly a month before the wedding and decided to make my life awful in the process. When I reached out to Jeffrey, I was a new grad with a job offer lined up in the healthcare field. I had multiple licensure exams I had to pass within 6 weeks of graduation in order to keep my job. I contacted Jeffrey to help obtain a clean and mature break from my ex in order to avoid any future unpleasantries. Jeffrey is great at communicating; he kept me updated during every step of the process in a way that didn’t stress me out. He was also very quick to respond to anything I needed. When I met him for the first time in person I quickly felt at ease. I could instantly tell that he is extremely knowledgeable in the practice of family law because he asked all of the right questions to assess my situation and he came prepared to our meeting with sections of the Ohio Revised Code printed out. After understanding my situation he explained the parts of the ORC that applied to my situation as well as how he planned to use them. Jeffrey executed everything perfectly and got it all done within a week. Thanks to Jeffrey, I was able to obtain a clean break from my ex-fiancé and begin the healing process. I have since passed my exams, obtained my license, and I am doing better than I ever imagined possible. If you are looking for the best attorney in the tristate, reach out to Jeffrey Goodman. All of my friends know to contact Jeffrey Goodman if they ever have any issues that a lawyer’s expertise would be beneficial in resolving.

Tiffany Evans was appointed as Guardian Ad Litem for my stepdaughters. Her report failed to address the particular issue leading to her appointment and disregarded a majority of the facts shared with her during a lengthy process of interviews. Additionally, it was the experience of numerous of those interviewed by her that she appeared disorganized to an unprofessional extent. We were the last case of Tiffany's before she left the firm for a magistrate position; it appeared that the report was rushed and reflected very poorly on her as well as the firm.

What an Entertainment Lawyer Can Do for You

An entertainment lawyer specializes in legal matters related to the entertainment industry, including film, television, music, publishing, sports, and digital media. They assist artists, creators, producers, and companies with contract negotiations, intellectual property protection, licensing deals, royalties, and disputes. Entertainment lawyers also help clients navigate complex industry regulations and ensure their creative rights are protected.

Whether you're an actor, musician, producer, writer, or influencer, an entertainment lawyer can help safeguard your rights and ensure that your business deals are legally sound.

When Should I Hire an Entertainment Lawyer?

You should consider hiring an entertainment lawyer in a variety of situations, including:

  • Contract negotiations: If you're signing a contract for a film role, recording deal, or publishing agreement, an entertainment lawyer can review the terms and negotiate on your behalf to ensure your interests are protected.
  • Intellectual property protection: If you're a creator (musician, writer, filmmaker), an entertainment lawyer can help secure copyrights, trademarks, and licensing agreements to protect your work from unauthorized use.
  • Disputes or litigation: If you’re involved in a legal dispute, such as breach of contract, copyright infringement, or defamation, an entertainment lawyer can represent you in negotiations or court.
  • Representation agreements: If you’re hiring or entering into a contract with a manager, agent, or publicist, a lawyer can ensure that the terms of representation are fair and comply with industry standards.
  • Royalties and licensing: If you're licensing your work for use in film, TV, or digital platforms, a lawyer can negotiate royalty agreements to ensure you receive proper compensation.
  • Talent contracts: Whether you are hiring talent for a project or negotiating your own appearance or performance fees, an entertainment lawyer can ensure the terms are legally binding and beneficial.
  • Film and television production: If you're producing a film, TV show, or other media project, a lawyer can handle contracts with crew, talent, and distributors, and ensure that all legal aspects of the production are covered.

Hiring a lawyer early in your entertainment career or project can prevent costly legal mistakes and protect your creative and financial interests.

What Does an Entertainment Lawyer Do?

An entertainment lawyer provides a range of legal services to professionals in the entertainment industry. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Reviewing and drafting contracts: Entertainment lawyers review, draft, and negotiate contracts for talent, production, licensing, distribution, and endorsements. This ensures that the terms are fair and protect their client's interests.
  • Securing intellectual property rights: They help clients obtain copyrights, trademarks, and patents for their creative works, and assist with licensing those rights to third parties.
  • Negotiating deals: Whether it's a film deal, music contract, publishing agreement, or endorsement, an entertainment lawyer ensures that their client gets favorable terms and is protected from potential legal pitfalls.
  • Handling disputes and litigation: In cases where contract terms are violated, intellectual property is infringed, or other legal issues arise, an entertainment lawyer can represent clients in negotiations, arbitration, or court.
  • Advising on industry regulations: Entertainment lawyers help clients navigate industry-specific laws, such as union regulations, labor laws, or FCC rules for broadcasting.
  • Managing royalties and residuals: They assist in tracking and collecting royalties or residuals for music, film, television, and digital content to ensure clients receive the compensation they are owed.
  • Talent agreements and representation: Entertainment lawyers often work with talent agents and managers, ensuring that their clients' representation agreements are legally sound and financially beneficial.

How Are Entertainment Lawyers Paid?

Entertainment lawyers may be paid in various ways, depending on the type of service provided. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many entertainment lawyers charge by the hour, with rates typically ranging from $250 to $1,000 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fee: For specific legal services, such as drafting a contract or filing a trademark, some lawyers offer flat fees. Flat fees are common in simpler or one-time transactions.
  • Contingency fee: In some cases, especially when working with talent, entertainment lawyers may charge a contingency fee, meaning they take a percentage (usually 5% to 10%) of the client's earnings from a particular project.
  • Retainer: For ongoing legal services, such as managing contracts and royalties over a long period, a lawyer may require a retainer fee. This is an upfront payment that covers future legal services, and the lawyer bills against the retainer as they work on the case.

It’s important to discuss fee structures with your lawyer at the outset to ensure you understand the total cost of legal services.

How Much Does an Entertainment Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an entertainment lawyer depends on the complexity of your legal needs, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of fee arrangement. General cost estimates include:

  • Hourly rates: Entertainment lawyers typically charge between $250 and $1,000 per hour. More experienced lawyers with extensive connections in the entertainment industry may charge higher rates.
  • Flat fees: For simpler services like drafting a basic contract, flat fees can range from $500 to $5,000, depending on the complexity of the agreement.
  • Contingency fees: Lawyers working on a contingency basis typically charge between 5% and 10% of the earnings from a project or deal. For example, if a lawyer helps you secure a $100,000 film contract, their fee might be $5,000 to $10,000.
  • Retainers: For ongoing legal representation, retainers can range from $2,500 to $50,000 or more, depending on the scope of the legal services and the length of the engagement.

Always discuss the costs and fee structure during your initial consultation to ensure that the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Entertainment Lawyer

Before hiring an entertainment lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they are the right fit for your career or project. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have in entertainment law?
Ensure the lawyer has experience in your specific area of the entertainment industry, whether it's film, music, television, or digital media.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, flat fee, or contingency fee, and ask for a detailed cost estimate.
  3. Do you have industry connections?
Ask about the lawyer’s experience and connections in the entertainment industry, which can be valuable for contract negotiations and deal-making.
  4. What contracts or legal issues should I be aware of?
Ask the lawyer to identify potential legal pitfalls in your specific project or career and how they would help you avoid them.
  5. What intellectual property protections do I need?
If you’re a creator, ask how the lawyer will help protect your intellectual property rights and prevent others from using your work without permission.
  6. How will you negotiate deals on my behalf?
Ask about the lawyer’s approach to negotiating contracts, ensuring they focus on getting favorable terms while maintaining strong industry relationships.
  7. What happens if there is a dispute?
Ask the lawyer how they handle disputes, including whether they aim for negotiation or litigation and how they would protect your interests.

How to Check the Credibility of an Entertainment Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable entertainment lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for entertainment law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in entertainment law and have successfully handled cases or negotiations relevant to your industry.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients say about their experience with the lawyer, especially in terms of contract negotiations and industry knowledge.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on entertainment-related matters.
  • Check for industry memberships: Membership in entertainment law organizations, such as the Beverly Hills Bar Association Entertainment Law Section, can indicate a lawyer’s dedication to staying up-to-date on industry trends and regulations.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with an entertainment lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Current contracts or agreements: Bring any contracts you have already signed or are considering, such as talent agreements, recording contracts, publishing deals, or management contracts.
  • Intellectual property portfolio: Provide details about any copyrights, trademarks, or other intellectual property you own or are seeking to protect.
  • Project details: If you’re working on a specific project (e.g., film, album, book), provide a summary of the project, your role, and any legal needs, such as contract negotiations or copyright protection.
  • List of collaborators or stakeholders: Provide information about other parties involved in your project, such as agents, managers, producers, or distributors, and any contracts related to them.
  • Questions about your legal needs: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, potential issues, and how the lawyer can help you protect your interests.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your legal needs effectively and provide the best possible advice tailored to your entertainment career or project.
