Vyzas and Associates was compassionate and helpful in settling my parents' affairs after my father's death. Sixteen years later, they supported in following up on my mother's legal affairs, including a special needs trust and change to the deed so that when the time comes, we won't be stressed out. Eldercare can be challenging especially in a sandwich generation. Grateful for their support in what can be difficult and necessary conversations with our loved ones.

I can't speak highly enough of Aurel. I told my client to call Aurel for his services for the sale of his property and am beyond happy I did. The sale started off pretty easy and quickly turned into a nightmare due to a lot of unforseen circumstances. It took us three times to get the property sold and Aurel stuck with us the whole time. He is an absolute professional and knows his craft in and out. Not only is he an excellent lawyer but he is a down-to-earth, great guy. He didn't heavy hand us because he was the lawyer and we weren't, he spoke to us with respect and came from a place of wanting to do his best to help. I don't know what we would have done without him for this deal. In my opinion, the legal world is a better place with someone with his attitude. I will never use another attorney for any business in this state. If you are looking for a lawyer that really knows his stuff, cares about his clients, and cares about getting the job done, then this is your guy.

If I could give Attorney Darren Kirton a rating hirer than 5 stars I would. The sale of my rental property in Newark NJ was an extremely arduous journey. Besides having to navigate the process during a pandemic, we were also facing a litany of concerns with the property itself. Without boring you with the blow by blow, suffice to say, Mr. Kirton was the best and only choice of captain to helm this ship. There were so many times that the deal appeared to be lost but somehow Mr. Kirton guided it safely back on course. If I had to do it all over again, I would definitely choose him. He's intelligent, reliable, very professional and extremely approachable. If you want results, I would highly recommend Attorney Darren Kirton.

His methodical approach meant that nothing was overlooked, which was incredibly important in such a significant transaction. Natalie Gordon is a phenomenal attorney. She’s very hardworking. In my experience with her defending me, my court case went as smooth as they have ever been. She made sure everything was prepared and taken care of accordingly so that way there were no delays or holdups on the courtroom . She’s very professional and comforting. She gives her clients confident I believe we need to go into any court room. She does an all around great job and I’m happy to have had her represent me.

[UPDATE ON AUG 1, 2022] I'm editing this after a call with Matthew after the review published, to clarify parts that were either out of his control or that could be better explained or attributed. Updated comments will be in [ ]. It might be hard to read because of the additions, so I apologize in advance. I hired Matthew Feinbloom to handle my home purchase and would not recommend [UPDATE: I would only recommend Matt if he gets more assistance with his workload, becomes more transparent in his communication about expectations and if you, the potential client, are able to stay on top of the process and proactively check in or ask questions throughout.] I went with Matt because my realtor recommended him. Throughout the months-long process, I maybe heard from Matt three to five times. [UPDATE: By which I meant of his own initiation to inform me of things like executed contracts being ready for signing.] He was responsive enough via email, but never seemed to actually be in my corner. [UPDATE: Matt is insistent that he has his clients best interests at heart, and I believe that he feels this way. From my perspective I just felt like I wanted someone more communicative and who would guide me every step of the way.] On the DAY OF closing, he informed me AT SIGNING that the tax abatement I had been asking about for months had been denied. I asked when he found out about the denial, and he said 2 weeks ago. But he waited a whole two weeks to let me know? [UPDATE: Matt has admitted that this is something he should have done sooner but stated that in his opinion this wouldn't have made a difference in whether I would have received approval for an abatement.] I was also charged TWICE for my Homeowners Insurance by the title company that Matt selected. He asked them in writing to issue a check as a refund, but they did not, and he never followed up until I checked in more than a month later. Not to mention the many issues my lender had with the title company. [UPDATE: Matt said that he didn't know and that had he known they didn't send me the refund he would have done something. I didn't check on the refund until weeks later because I had to deal with the administrative fallout and general tedium of moving.] At closing, too, the TITLE DEED he wanted me to simply sign (without double checking) had the WRONG UNIT on it. The papers I was supposed to sign had multiple errors all over them, and he had to fix and reprint several sheets of paper, resulting in him being late for his next meeting. [UPDATE: Matt has stated both during our call today and at closing in June that when I was signing the documents was the first time he had himself read them, so any errors that came up were really the mistakes of the deed and title companies, who themselves had lawyers and other people working on the documents.] Overall, it felt like Matt had no time to really pay attention to my case. I wish I had gone with someone else. I'm now continuing to deal with the fallout of having been blindsided this entire process. I have all the documents and receipts to prove what happened. If you want to go with Matt, make sure you're on top of the entire process yourself. Otherwise, find someone else who will actually look out for you. [FINAL UPDATE: I feel that Matt did get the brunt of my displeasure at the entire homebuying process, which was especially shitty in Jersey City. It was not Matt's fault that so much of the process was frustrating and frankly borderline illegal. The builders and developers had a part to play as well, and the seller's attorney was difficult to work with, causing many of these issues. I've suggested to Matt that his firm finds more assistance so he can have more time to focus on his cases and his clients' needs. In future, I would find a different attorney for myself, as I want someone who's more proactive about communicating with me. Matt may improve in future too, and he seemed genuinely distraught

Matt was exceptional to work with. He was diligent, super responsive, and knowledgeable. Our transaction was challenging, and despite all the difficulty, Matt remained patient and reassuring throughout the process. Importantly - I walked away with 100 percent trust in Matt’s capability to close difficult transactions. Being my third home purchase, Matt is BY FAR the best real estate lawyer I’ve ever worked with. Will absolutely use him again for my next transaction.

Would have saved us both alot of time and me an unnessary $800 fee if he would have just taken the time to access my bankrupct situation alittle more quickly and carefullly and didnt have me pay the fee from the start but I suspect he knew every early at that time, I wasnt a good candidate for bankruocy but I already paid the fee so of course he didnt want to give that back. During it when I had questions he was hard to reach and rarely avilable and returned phone calls. Towards the end he didnt even call me to end our client, lawyer realtionship. I got a letter when he could have just talked to me and told me because of the information I gave him, Im not a good candidate at that moment. Then a year later he contacts me for no reason I suspect when he learned I was working with a colleague on a accident case he knows but that had nothing to do with my accident case and as recently as last month when my situation was alittle more dire and i wanted to file for bankruptcy and I cantacted him again to give him the business, he saw my name on his caller id and just hanged up which was very unprofessional so for all these resons I give him a 1 star and would give a 0 if I could. Im sure hes a good lawyer but he wasnt with me a couple years ago at all. Sorry guy but it is what it is.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
