After interviewing three other attorneys Karen was my choice. She asked good questions pertaining only to my case, she took good notes (in a note book not a laptop) and I didn't feel as though I was another number in the days quota. I found Karen to be firm but fair in dealing with all that were involved and very helpful in guiding me to make the right decisions for my case to have the outcome that I was happy with. The staff is professional and very friendly and good communication between all parties seems to be a priority. They make the office run flawlessly.

I have been dealing with painful physical & mental issues and cancer treatments. Ive unable to work after Honorable military service and over 25 years of civilian employment. After being in much pain and treatments, I was unable to work and applied for SSDI. I was rejected twice. Then I became of client of Ms. Maren Bam. On our first round together with the SSDI judge, I was approved. I can now focus on my health, treatments, and taking care of my family as best that I can. She is also pursing VA benefits for me. She is supportive, non-judgmental, and works hard for me. Thank You Ms. Maren!

He carefully explained each step of the process, the purpose of each document that may be included in the estate planning, and helped us determine the scope of the estate planning. He asked pertinent questions, explained what information (and why) he needed from us, and used a checklist to collect the required information to complete the estate planning. I hired Jared Hays. I was told all the stuff Jared was going to do for me. $9000,00 dollars later and asking for more money. I realized were it was going so I fired Jared and found a person to help with court papers for far far far less money. If I had stayed with him I would have paid him $30,000 to $40.000 for my divorce. On top of all this I heard thru the grape vine Jared was going thru his own divorce at the time he was representing me, if Jared had informed me he was going thru is own divorce I would not of hired him. If you have to go the route of an attorney I would NOT recommend these guys.

I had Christopher Hoxie as my legal aid appointed attorney and what a huge mess it was. I was not fairly represented at all. He never worked on my case, his legal team would literally never get back to me when it was urgent. I have been dealing with my divorce since 2020 and it is still not over yet because of how slow he works. He never did anything I was told he was going to do even when it was detrimental to my case. His paralegals changed ALL THE TIME and no one would ever tell me. All he cared about was that I wasn't paying him and he is very slow. I'm glad to have him off my case and had to hire a competent lawyer to fairly represent me in court and actually show up to hearings because my last hearing, he wasn't even there. Absolutely ridiculous service. Never hire this law firm ever or you will be absolutely wasting your time.

I hired Christopher on a family law case I had a while back & he did wonders for my case!! I am an extremely satisfied client. He is fierce in the court room. He knows exactly what his client wants & he’s not afraid to tell the judge!! Something I really appreciated about Chris and his law firm is that they would give me a call prior to my court date to remind me of it, even when I didn’t have to be present. I felt like I always was in the loop about my case. After the experience I had with Christopher, I’ve made him my go to. His law office practices a lot of different law so it’s definitely my new go to attorney.

I met with Rob in early 2020 , paid a $2000.00 retainer for his help with a legal matter. I received a letter when Covid started saying there would be delays for all clients. This was the last I ever heard from him or his office. I have since called dozens of times for a refund of the remainder of my retainer as the matter I hired him for has become irrelevant in the 3 years that have passed. I have never received a call back. I would just like the retainer returned. I cannot fathom taking money from someone and never providing the service or a return of the money paid. Looking at other reviews, I see I am not alone there are plenty of others who describe similar experiences.

I retained Mr. Loren Eddy’s services in August 2014. On 8-8-14, we were in court so I could be made Executor of my father’s estate. Even though he could have published the Notice to Creditors on 8-13-14, he refused because he said he’s superstitious and doesn’t do things like that on the 13th. It was published a week after it should have been. Once the house sold in October, I then moved to Nampa, ID on 10-10-14. On 10-14-14 I was back in Kennewick, WA and met with Mr. Eddy to discuss the plan once he received the check from the home sale. He requested an accounting and the value of the GMC Envoy that I had kept from the estate. He also told me he would send my proposal with the accounting and a waiver form to the other heirs by 11-7-14. On 10-15-14 I emailed him the accounting, and on 10-16-14 I emailed him the value of the Envoy. The house closed on 10-17-14, and the money was supposed to be deposited in an account at Gierth-Eddy. On 10-26-14 I sent Mr. Eddy an email asking him if he received my previous emails, and if he received the check and how much it was. I got no response, so I send another email on 10-31-14. Again, I didn’t receive a response. On 11-6-14, I called and left a message requesting he respond to my questions that were in emails. Nothing. I called again on 11-10-14 and still no response. In my call on 11-14-14, I left a message stating if I didn’t hear from him by 11-17-14 I would find someone else to represent me. My husband and I decided to discontinue his services, and sent him a letter certified mail on 11-17-14 notifying him of this and that I wanted the check sent to me by 12-1-14. Around 2:30pm on 11-17-14 Mr. Eddy finally called, and he commented that he had a draft letter for me to review before sending it to the other heirs. I told him it didn’t matter as I no longer required his services and that the letter he just drafted was supposed to be out no later than 11-7-14 according to the timeline we discussed on 10-14-14. I also told him he’d be receiving a certified letter notifying him of his dismissal in writing. He received the certified letter on 11-19-14.He told me I needed to sign a form saying I was no longer his client and I told him to mail it to me. After firing Mr. Eddy, my husband looked into what would be required to close the probate on my father’s estate. We discovered that not only was probate not required, which Mr. Eddy failed to convey, but we weren’t required to send an accounting unless the other heirs requested it, which again we were not informed of. On 12-3-14 I still hadn’t received any form to sign nor had the check arrived. On 12-3-14 Mr. Eddy finally called my husband. During this conversation, Mr. Eddy claimed he had to be dismissed by a judge and could do nothing until then. If this is true, he failed to tell me during our conversation on 11-17-14, instead only stating I needed to sign a form. According to our research, since this is not a criminal case and there are no pending court dates, a judge doesn’t have to get involved. However, if a judge is required to dismiss him, he was required to immediately send me a letter stating that he was required by law to work on my case until dismissed by a judge, which he didn’t do. My husband was polite during the conversation, but Mr. Eddy got confrontational. When my husband notified him we would be pursuing criminal charges against him, he hung up the phone on my husband. Later on 12-3-14, my husband received a call from Allen at the Washington State Bar Association. According to Allen, he cannot hold the check and refuse to send it since I’m the Executor and have legal rights to it.

Hired him to be the probate lawyer of a will. For most part everything went well at first. Then now when of need of one last form to be able to close estate. He is never reachable you always leave messages either on an answering machine or with a receptionist with no return calls. Then when you finally have enough and say that is unexceptable they say you need a "phone conference" to speak to him, and its scheduled a week out even after leaving several message to have a return call over a few weeks. The "phone conference" was done and was told the we would receive the form via mail by xxx date. Needless to say we still had not received the form and are being scheduled for another phone conference. Orless you have time on your hands to wait, like poor service, and don't mind being ignored. I would go elsewhere.

As an attorney you have an obligation to serve your clients not screw them over because your too old and can’t handle a touch case! I was faced with a parenting plan case and Kolleen was the first attorney I consulted. She told me if I was to get an attorney, that I would have to pay for an attorney for my ex and that I didn't need legal representation for my case. Both of those claims were undoubtedly false. I felt like she just pocketed my consultation fee and rushed me out her door. I would not advise anyone to consult with this attorney. I hired a much better attorney and my case went well.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
