This Lawyer cares about people and not her pocket. I spoke with 5 other Attorney's who wanted to charge My wife and I three times the amount for our Trust. Attorney Natalie was very nice and accommodating to my wife schedule. We are very happy with her service and she will be our go-to attorney.

I wanted to thank Andrew Mckewon at Harris Family Law for the incredible work. I was referred to Andrew by a close friend. As many in similar situations can attest to, having to go through any family law situation can be harrowing and stressful. I had spoken to several attorneys who were all competent, but Andrew was the only one to take the time to listen, understand and reassure me that this matter would be taken care of. Andrew's communication and transparency are excellent. He is pragmatic, setting expectations that always made me feel optimistic about my matter; as well as taken care of. He will always go to bat for you and he's an attorney you can rely on to get it done. Thank you!!

Andy and I have known each other since the first year of law school. He has always been extremely professional and thoughtful in his approach. What makes him an amazing family law attorney is his ability to place himself in his clients position and effectively communicate to their needs. I recommend Andy to the highest degree.

I don’t have enough good things to say about Denise Trevino. My divorce and child custody case was an extremely complicated case. She represented me in California while I live in a different state. The care that she showed me and my children was more than I could have hoped for. She truly looked at us as more than just a case. Dealing with the court system and lawyers is a scary and stressful thing, but she made the whole process a lot less horrible, as well as getting me the best possible outcome for me and my children. I will always be grateful for what she helped me accomplish.

About ten years ago my sister and I set out to find an Elder Law Attorney for our Mother and Step Father. We interviewed numerous lawyers and finally decided on Fay Blix. We both feel it was one of the best decisions we made as we cared for our parents in their last years. Fay is highly knowlegable in her field and helped us navigate through some complex decisions. She has a real gift for simplifying legal information for her clients. She was very calm and reassuring during a difficult time for our family. I have since recommended Fay Blix with the utmost of confidence to friends who are caring for their parents. They all feel the same way.

I own a small business with approx. 10 employees. I have had employment law issues which could have been very costly. I consulted with Kristine Karila about the issues my business was facing and she provided excellent advice and had a strategy for me to avoid any lawsuits. I have since consulted with Kristine on numerous occasions regarding my business’ employment law matters since California laws are very strict and constantly changing as well as difficult to know and understand. I highly recommend the Law Office of Kristine Karila. She is efficient, answers calls right away and knows California Employment law extremely well.

I am a 30-year business attorney in southern California. I have known Steve Zwick for 17 years. When I was injured in a car accident, I went to Steve for help. He and his team handled the procedural aspects of my case exceptionally well and he listened carefully to me about the pain I was suffering and the circumstances it caused in my life. He coordinated and directed me to the appropriate medical specialists to not only evaluate my condition, but to identify the specific source of my pain for purposes of long term resolution of it. He quite successfully advocated my right to compensation from all available angles. Steve is a caring person and a tenacious advocate. I trust his integrity, knowledge and experience to the point where I refer my clients who suffer personal injury to Steve for claim evaluation and prosecution.

I was looking at 2 charges: Under the influence of a controlled substance & Domestic Violence (ex). Both were misdemeanor charges and this was the biggest trouble I've ever been in with the law - I was really scared about how this would end... Bottom line, Both charges were dismissed completely. I had to attend some classes and that was it! In fact, I even missed my court dates and had a warrant out for my arrest which David was able to help me with. Awesome lawyer! I went into this thinking that it'd be great if I could somehow just face only one misdemeanor at least. Nope... I couldn't have asked for anything better. I mean, I got all my charges DISMISSED and didn't have to pay a bunch of court fees either. In fact, the most expensive thing wasn't the court fees - it was the attorney fee. And that was only 50% of what a few other lawyers were asking for. It helped so much that he was familiar with the court and the judge. In fact, I referred him to a couple people who didn't have a lawyer at the time and I'd do it again. He treated me respectfully and didn't make me feel ashamed or like a loser - his attitude was professional and optimistic but at the same time he didn't overly promise. Honestly, I have no idea why that person would leave a 1 star review. Warren

I can't begin to tell you how pleased I am to have Linda Albers representing me. She truly is the best attorney that you'll ever meet. I approached Ms. Albers about my case, after a previous attorney that I retained decided that my case was "too difficult" to win, and therefore no longer wanted to represent me. Upon my first conversation with Ms. Albers, I knew that I was in the perfect hands. Not only was Ms. Albers not afraid to approach my case, but she identified aspects of my case that hadn't been explored by my previous attorney. In the two years that I have worked with Ms. Albers, she has made herself available to speak to me each and every time that I have reached out to her. Additionally, she is as brilliant as she is warm and compassionate. Her understanding and comprehension of the law is masterful. Ms. Albers is as passionate about my case as I am, as she crusades for my justice. She is truly phenomenal! While there are thousands of attorneys to chose from, Ms. Albers is the finest attorney that you'll have the privilege of working with.

Linda handled a work related (sexual harassment/ wrongful termination) case and was very transparent throughout the entire process. . I feel she provided the results I was hoping to achieve. She set me with realistic expectations and exceeded them with our settlement payout. She is very thorough in her representation and fights for her clients. I would recommend her to people I care about.

This is the worst family attorney I’ve had the misfortune of working with. I hired her to do three crucial tasks and she did nothing on my behalf for me or my child! One submit vital medical documents to the judge. Two help me debunk/ defend myself against false allegations. Three help me gain more custody and visitation of my child. Instead she surrendered my legal custody without my knowledge or consent, while I was not present. She set me and my child back years and burned through around 8K giving me the run around and playing both sides. She cannot be trusted and should have her legal license revoked. She’s a liar and by the time I caught wind she was helping the opposing party it was too late; and I lost legal custody. It took years and over 10K to get it back! So she actually wasted ~20 thousand and vital years for us while my child is struggling & suffering. All because she’s a greedy, crooked, con artist only interested in charging top dollar for empty promises to pay for her million dollar mortgage in Laguna.

Underwhelming, understaffed, underachieving and unprepared sums it up. Oh and micro transaction billing. As if your 12 second email reply is worth $87. She will nickel and dime your deposit down to nothing before you even see the judge with erroneous questions via email instead of asking all questions about once, she will happily let you respond to her emails that she will will bill each one individually for. Just wasted efforts, wasted back and forth. $900 for an income and expense declaration... Stay away from the small time lawyer that bills you out the wazoo and then gets upset when you question where $5k went and only produced two forms to the court and hasn't accomplished anything. I went into my last hearing without an attorney and got the same results which in my opinion says quite a bit about any skill you thought you were paying for. Totally unprepared in the child support hearing, distracted even, working from home. Lackluster skill and performance. Do your homework and set expectations.

Mr. Connolly did a great job for my wife and I back in 2021 in preparing a revocable trust and advanced healthcare directive, and we found his information through the ARAG legal community directory. However, we have been unable to get in touch with him since 2022, as we need to update our trust (baby!) and several other matters. We have called, stopped by on a few different occasions, etc.

Recently consulted w/ Mr. Geis. Planned to hire him and he then stated he took on 2 new cases so didn’t have time for us. Also stated he was going to be busy w/ his kids activities,. Instead of telling us this ASAP in the fee based consultation, he waited and was unresponsive to messages at the office and to track him done about 2 weeks later to find out this news. Very unprofessional behavior. Just sent us off w/ 3 other names of lawyers to try.

I used amy for some very basic estate planning a few years ago. She did an ok job with a very basic plan. I needed to do some updating to my plan and called several times, left messages and even asked (via VM) if she was too busy to possibly refer me to someone else. I NEVER got a response. I would never have gone to her in the first place if I knew she wouldn’t be responsive to my updated needs/requests. Wish I would’ve gone to someone else.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
