I hired Corey Martin to represent my son who was speeding on his way home to NJ from NC. I provided him with his retainer fee via credit card and all necessary documents he requested. My son's case was totally dismissed and only had to pay court fines. No appearance was necessary which was a big deal since he is military. I highly recommend Corey Martin! Look no further!

We hired Corey Martin to help us prepare a defense for a speeding ticket that could have significantly impacted our son's career. Young drivers can make mistakes. Corey's experience with the law and the court procedure helped us prepare in advance to present our case in the best possible light for consideration by the judge. A charge of reckless by speed was reduced to improper driving. Preparation in advance, accepting responsibility, showing remorse, and parental presence were the key factors in a good outcome. Precise language and crisp presentation is necessary as the court hears several hundred cases every day. Do not go to traffic court unprepared and without representation. It will cost more in insurance, fines, driving suspension, and career earnings damage. Hire Corey Martin right away, he will work with you for the best possible outcome.

My husband and I went to Mr. Wells to discuss the various forms of bankruptcy. He explained everything very well, went over all the options and advised us appropriately. All while making us feel comfortable and confident in his abilities. The outcome was positive and has given us the new start that we so desperately needed. Mr. Wells and his staff took care of everything we required and treated us with professionalism and kindness. He made a horrible situation bearable and we greatly appreciate his help.

I first worked with Mr. Wells in 2012 when I met with him for a bankruptcy consultation. I was very apprehensive about the whole process but really had no choice so I hired him and moved foreward. He listened to my concerns and was always there with accuracy and professionalism, explaining each step. I never had a doubt that he was on top of things and that helped so much. What a relief! Three years later and I have rebuilt my credit and am doing well. I had a question about a lien that was attached to my property before the bankruptcy. I am now in a position to settle that last remnant of my past financial troubles so I gave his office a call today. Mr. Wells called me back within an hour, remembered me from 3 years ago and answered all my questions, offering his services if needed. I would recommend Mr. Wells 100%. Bankruptcy can be an unnerving process- the right lawyer helps so much.

We have used Sarah for wills and other personal documents as well as rental leases. Each time she has been great to work with. She takes the time to understand her clients and what their concerns and priorities are. She goes over various options and explains pros and cons of each. She does a great job in explaining complicated legal documents in a way that anybody can understand. Sarah was also extremely patient with all of our questions and accommodating in scheduling which made the whole process very easy. Highly recommend her.

I received a notice in the mail from an old credit account, a company I had not heard from in almost 2 years. I wasn't sure how to handle it so I called Patricia. She listened and asked relevant questions, took the appropriate paperwork, and negotiated a settlement for me very quickly. I have been extremely pleased with all contact I have had with Patricia and her firm. They are top notch!

My mother is 68-years-old and has never needed to speak with a lawyer for any reason and did not know where to start. I am a business associate of Patricia's and knew that she would be an excellent person to speak with my mother about her situation (power of attorney). Unfortunately I couldn't attend the meeting and my Mom was a bit nervous and a little anxious to go by herself but everything worked out. Attorney Wood was terrific. She made my mother feel at ease and helped her understand her situation better while also providing information in easily understood terms instead of legalese.

Mr. Brown is horrible lawyer. She is all about money and not listening to her clients. Every other month they’re a new person working on my case. She does not work well with her clients. Three years of shelling out money every month with not one things accomplished on my case. I’m in the same situation as when I started. Still not divorced. Still have unresolved issues and she doesn’t care. She is not willing to work with you at all. Her office staff is horrible to deal with nothing gets done in a timely fashion. It’s all on their schedule. It totally ridiculous that the law office can take advantage of pin their lowest moments.

I was hopeful when I hired Wyatt Taylor to be my lawyer for my divorce. He represented himself as a lawyer that fights for women after he saw the treatment his mom received while going through her own divorce. Based on that story, I felt that he would be the best lawyer for me. Wyatt Taylor did not end up being the lawyer that he presented himself as. Wyatt Taylor did not keep me informed of my case. I was constantly calling his office to get updates on my case, and when I would call, I would find out that nothing had been done. He neglected and mishandled my case and drug it out over years, all the while charging me for every delay he caused. I was afraid to call, because every time I did, I was charged for asking what was going on with my situation. He charged me and overcharged me for phone calls, emails, me dropping off papers to his office, and anything else he could find to charge me for. He charged me for talking with him about the work he was going to do. He would charge me for doing the work. He would then charge me again for us to review the work he did, then charge me again to fix the mistakes that he made because he did not listen to me during the initial conversation and do it correctly based on our conversations. He sent my personal legal papers to a wrong address after he was given a correct change of address. He sent me legal papers with other clients’ names in it. After a 25-year marriage, I did not think I would ever need a divorce lawyer, and was very naïve in what to look for, and I was not in the best state of mind when trying to go through this process. But, over the last few years, I have found my voice and I am able to see when things are not right and speak up against them. The way that Wyatt Taylor handled my case, was not the way a lawyer should treat his clients. According to the Virginia State Bar and the American Bar Association, a lawyer should not procrastinate and draw out a client’s case. A lawyer should communicate with their client and keep them informed of their case. A lawyer should protect their client’s personal information. And, a lawyer should not collect an unreasonable fee or an unreasonable amount for expenses. Wyatt Taylor acted unethically in all of these statutes. Going through a divorce is hard enough, but to add the anxiety of a lawyer that you do not have confidence in and feel that they are working for your best interests, takes it to another level. If you decide to do work with Wyatt Taylor, keep close tabs of your invoices and actual emails, length of phone conversations, and every interaction that you have with him.

To say I was thoroughly disappointed would be an understatement. . Best case scenario, he’s ok but completely checked out. Worst case, he’s bitter and doesn’t like women. It was thoroughly baffling. Didn’t fight for me at all. Told me while I was camping and he knew I was camping that I would have to be in court the evening before and I had to pack up all my things and return from my trip which was 4 hours away. Would not ask for support, didn’t even read through my case. Did not believe me or fight for me. He first told me I’d need to pay him 7500 then accepted 5600. (Trying to get as much as he could) He showed up at court disheveled and it was pretty clear from the start my husband’s lawyer was far superior. Didn’t return my calls and did far more damage than help. There’s something wrong with him. Avoid like the plague, unless you have something very very straight forward. Even then. Maybe he’s better for men. He just went through a divorce himself apparently.

If you have a lot of money to throw away she is your lawyer. If you need someone to fight for you and be above board with you on spending and billing. She is awful . I had to change lawyers because over 8 months the only thing she did to help me was. Spousal support and not much of that.ni would not recommend her to anyone. She has her own agenda and is very disrespectful to her client. Do not make this mistake please

Julie Cillo didn’t care about me, my case or my children. After a year, 50K in lawyers fees, not even a separation agreement, I was asked to replenish my retainer in the sum of 15K. What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
