I could make a guess at what his IQ is, but either way I am sure it is off the charts. Matthew might be one of the brilliant persons I have encountered in my lifetime-I feel like I found treasure in coming across his information. He is incredibly knowledgeable in his profession, but unlike some lawyers who are just book smart, he is someone who is friendly, personable, listens to you very well...and is an absolute total shark to boot. This is someone you want on your side; and boy, do I pity the person who is on the opposing side of him. He took time to listen to my situation in entirety (I called on a holiday that many local attorneys were unavailable on, nonetheless) and he provided me with sharp and insightful feedback. At the end of the call, you almost want him to keep talking, because you learn so much from his wealth of experience. I told him he should write a book! I would unreservedly use him for any future legal needs. I have worked with dozens of attorneys over the years in a career spanning finance and tech, and he is a gem who stands out amongst them all.

Mathew is an exceptional attorney: his attention to details when it comes to DUI case is beyond valuable. He helped me after being falsely excused of DUI. He reviewed my case from every single angle; he left no stone unturned. He proved the officer was dishonest for personal reasons. His sharp attention to details led to huge discovery and breakthrough in my case. His strategic planning is just amazing; simple, neat, and effective. Mathew has great people skills and he knows how to use them to help his clients. He takes every phone call and answers all the emails. He even pays attention to the health and well-being of his clients. He called me on a Sunday, just to recommend taking it easy and going to a spa to relax before the big day. My case resulted in a traffic fraction—after the DA was insisting on full charges and was threating me with serving time. The is no amount of money that can pay him justice. I will be forever grateful.

I was in Salinas county first year after graduate study, after relocation all way to California, a contract was breached by a local company 10 days into it. He was referred by the Bar. Not only was he able to provide information to address the issue, and my concerns, he placed the interest of client in the front of his practice to help decision making process. he was knowledgeable, caring, responsive, skillful, diligent, an excellent lawyer to work with.

Andrew, with RSC Law Group, was the 3rd attorney I worked with in the course of my messy and protracted divorce. Andrew was amazingly patient with me as he helped me navigate through that legal nightmare. He spent a lot of time explaining to my stress addled brain all my options and suggesting next steps. He was a tremendous advisor to me and I truly appreciated that he and his firm gave me the guidance that was best for my family and not what generated the most billable hours. Divorce is not a clear cut process and I took a lot of comfort knowing that I had a place to turn to when I needed help. In court I felt well represented and I liked that he didn't spend time arguing with opposing counsel outside of the courtroom arena. If things were different he'd still be my attorney but I appreciate that they left my family and I in a safer and more secure place than they originally found us in.

Andrew has handled our family law case for the past 4 Years here in Monterey. Our case was very complicated and involved child custody, visitation, and support. He was very attentive to our needs and patient with us during the difficult and emotional experience. He was knowledgeable and paid special attention to detail which helped us win each time we went to court. Andrew was always prepared and swift to answer any questions via phone or email and there were even some times that he helped me during the weekends or holidays. I have recommended him to many friends here in the area and will continue to recommend him and utilize him for my own case as needed.

Lori Silver helped me with my estate planning as well as my tax-related work. She has the natural ability to explain very difficult concepts in basic terms so I can understand my finances. Lori spent a great deal of time talking to me about what would be best for my family’s Trust. Her patience and understanding of family dynamics have enabled her to provide the best work possible for my family. No question is too small or unimportant, as Lori will spend whatever time necessary to help me, whether it’s returning a phone call or meeting in person. Lori’s expertise and knowledge in the areas of law, Trust preparation, and estate planning provide an amazingly strong foundation for her work, as she could help me with a variety of issues related to my estate. I have found Lori’s work impeccable. Quite frankly, Lori Silver is an incredible ‘find’ within the field of tax and law! I would give Lori 6 stars (out of 5 stars!)

Ms. Ascher is by far the best attorney I have ever encountered, (and in my work I have met and dealt with many attorneys.) She represented our family in a challenging probate. After literally weeks of of searching for an attorney I choose Ms. Ascher partly because one of her successful probate cases was selected by the Board of Equalization as a model. Although her office was in a different county than our case, without a doubt, it was well worth the extra time and effort to seek her out and we were fortunate that she took our case. I was very impressed with her thoroughness, attention to detail and of course her knowledge of and enthusiasm for the law. Ms. Ascher did her research and was exceptionally well prepared and our case prevailed when other attorneys had told me it could not be done. Her expertise and commitment to her client's best interests closed our probate on terms extremely beneficial for our family, saving us many, many thousands of dollars. I cannot emphasis enough how extremely happy and grateful I am to have had found such an intelligent, trustworthy and dedicated Advocate for estate planning and administration. (I thought I had posted this review a couple of years ago and regret that it is only going up now!) Sincerely, Richard W.

I recently used Julie King to prepare my trust. She spent a lot of time with me going through the trust and I felt very comfortable when done that I had a quality trust that was thorough and complete. Then my daughter-in-law's father needed a trust ASAP, and Julie King went above and beyond helping in this urgent situation. I was so impressed with her professionalism and also her concern and willingness to help under such short notice. She is very approachable and her work is impeccable and thorough and I highly recommend Julie King.

Mary was extremely helpful in my divorce that ended up taking over 2 years to complete. She always weighed in on what would be the best choice but put forth all the options. She even helped me get back on track after a time when I got caught up in moving and changing careers. She also was very transparent when helping me in areas she didn't normally practice, and went out of her way on several occasions to do what needed to be done. She was very patient and accommodating, but not to the point where I felt like I'd been forgotten...she was ready to nudge me at key times to make sure it went as smoothly as it could.

We work with Mr. Meyer in many landlord/tenant cases. He is very knowledgeable, and he works hard to fight for landlords. In California, landlords usually got the raw deals, but Mr. Meyer always found ways to protect us and reduce the eviction time. His work ethic, his professionalism, and his knowledge are outstanding. I highly recommend Mr. Meyer to all landlords who have issues with tenants. All the bad reviews are from sleazy tenants who can no longer abuse the California system and stay for free without paying landlords. If you are a landlord and have complex cases dealing with tenants, you should hire this law firm. If you have to deal with an unreasonable rent-control city, you should hire this law firm.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
