This Law firm is a joke! On Christmas Eve our Apartment flooded because our landlord didn’t insulate the pipe they repaired. Despite ruining our Christmas Day, New years and damaging our electronics, etc . We were told yesterday that we need to clean out our apartment and vacate it entirely so that they can renovate it this Saturday after we paid our rent January 1st. Our Apartment complex is not helping us with our damages or a hotel room or anything. I reached out to this law firm for help and they told me that they’re not taking any New tenant/landlord cases, to go to some bar association. Which we don’t qualify for because it’s for low income individuals. Some help! We’re literally going to lose all of our belongings and become homeless until our renters insurance put us in a hotel after we pay our deductible for 500$ and we find another place to live. None of this is our fault yet we’re the only ones coming out of our pockets to fix the issue the apartment caused. this law firm is a joke! picking and choosing which cases they want. They’re not helpful at all.

They recently sent me a random invoice for $7,488, which is now 11-years after their representation was concluded. My account was paid in full since 2013 when their representation ended. I have heard nothing from them since until this new invoice, that only included a business card for Emily, their client relations person and a return envelope for payment. I immediately emailed Emily with Patricia Jo Stone and Justin Jeager copied requesting confirmation the invoice was erroneous and asked for written confirmation within 48-hours. Emily responded the next day, “I believe I have resolved this billing matter after receiving information from Justin this morning.” I again requested written confirmation the invoice was in error, they had performed no work for me since 2013 and there had been no open matter with the firm since 2013, mostly because a belief is not written confirmation of their error. I waited not only the 48-hours I originally requested, but an additional 48-hours before posting this review. As of this review, Emily, Paricia and Justin remain unresponsive, despite me providing them additional time for a proper written response resolving their error. A pretty upsetting random bill and unresponsive approach 11-years after parting ways with them being fully paid for well over a decade. As background, I hired Justin Jeager in July of 2012 on a consulting basis for a Pro Se child custody modification proceeding that was fairly simple. I aimed to navigate the issue efficiently, but wanted legal advice and a professional review of filings. I initially found the consultation option attractive; however, as the modification progressed we transitioned from a consulting arrangement to traditional representation for this modification matter. Unfortunately, Justin’s abilities were dramatically limited at the time. He was verbally clumsy, unorganized and generally ineffective in the courtroom. He took excessive time to prepare items that other attorneys I worked with since were much more efficient in navigating. The problems and inefficiencies Justin brough to my case led to Patricia agreeing to a reduction of billed fees following the final outcome on this modification matter. The agreed settlement of fees was instantly paid in October of 2013 and we parted ways. There has been no contact either written, billing or verbal since with 11-years now having elapsed. That is until the recently received erroneous invoice. What’s more, shall they feel there was somehow a balance, they don’t feel the need to send bills or in any other way communicate for 132 months on such a fictious balance?! Clearly, the firm fails to understand how to use their billing system, how to promptly and properly fix their billing errors and/or Colorado law related to statute of limitations. If you’re looking for sub-par representation that overbills then sends random $7K+ invoices 11-years after their representation ends, hire these guys. That is exactly what they provided for me!

I am giving this review of Brandon Campbell not only as a current client, but as a fellow professional for whom I have referred several of my clients to him for his service....I am a Wealth Advisor / Financial Advisor. This is my experience, and the experience of countless clients who have hired him for his professional services: Firstly, let me say that anytime we research and read testimonials for professionals, we have an obligation to be objective...to be careful to filter out what true service and satisfaction is for real ability and service rendered VS. what may be emotional outbursts from others; fabrications, and/or simply patchworks of opinion where the casting of blame or dissatisfaction may prove to have possibly been misplaced. I will speak factually about the experiences I have personally had, and of which, have been reported back to me directly by several of my clients. Brandon Campbell comes to the table with a wealth of knowledge in regards to the law that he practices. He has an enormous amount of intellect, yet carries himself professionally with such humility and grace. My own personal estate planning was due for a major overhaul, which included the development of various trusts. One of the things I appreciate the MOST about Brandon, is that he goes above and beyond the act of developing legal documents. He takes his attention to detail to the next level. He covers every base. He asks the right questions to make sure we are creating the right vehicles, and lastly, he takes steps to make sure my estate planning vehicles are funded, titled and beneficiary-labeled correctly. I have NEVER had an attorney take that much personal ownership of the process. I appreciate that he takes his time to really get to know not only the legal need my family has, but the complexities that surround our particular lifestyle and protection-planning concerns. In addition to my own testimonial, I must confess that every single client I have inquired with in regards to their experience with him has reflected these consistent sentiments. It is absolutely critical to my own practice that I only refer clients to professionals I can trust, and of whom have proven their commitment, ability, knowledge, and character. All of these qualities and behaviors are reflected in who Brandon Campbell is as an attorney. I appreciate all that he does to help his clients get what they need. He is honest, sincere, educational, and yet, he's not afraid to tell clients what they truly need to hear. There are so many attorneys out there who are simply out to say what they think their perspective clients want to hear. Brandon is true to his commitment to delivery honest, thorough, comprehensive, tailored legal solutions to his clients, and he settles for nothing less. THANK YOU Brandon, for being the attorney you are. My clients and I are truly grateful. And I am confident that those in search of an attorney who will be their powerhouse...their confidant...their strongest resource, will agree with me.

I have worked with Brandon Campbell as legal counsel during the formation, implementation, and continued execution of two non-profit corporations in Denver. His knowledge-base, thoughtfulness, insight, and compassion were integral to working through multiple issues that challenged us during the process. I feel that he went well above-and-beyond expectations during this time and continues to act in an advisory role when needed. His efforts have supported the development of a strong base for our organizations and will help to ensure future success. I would recommend his services without reservation.

“Michael K. Palmer is an absolute powerhouse of an attorney. From the moment he took on my child support case, it was clear I had someone in my corner who wasn’t just knowledgeable but also unyielding. He left no stone unturned in fighting for my rights. His attention to detail, mastery of the law, and ability to anticipate every move were nothing short of incredible. What really sets him apart is his sheer confidence and presence—he doesn’t just defend; he dominates. He made me feel like my case was as important to him as it was to me, and the results speak for themselves. If you’re looking for a lawyer who will fight tooth and nail for you, someone who won’t back down and will go above and beyond, Michael K. Palmer is your guy. I couldn’t have asked for a better advocate. Truly a beast of a man and an unstoppable force. Thank you for everything!”

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
