I hired Spencer and vanguard law firm to assist me with an MVA that occurred in November 2021. From the beginning Spencer and his team were thorough, compassionate, very communicative, and explain things well, so that a layman, like my husband and I, could understand what was going on. We just settled the case, and the results far exceeded my expectations. If you are in need of a personal injury or an employment attorney, you would do well to hire Spencer and vanguard law firm!

First time filing and I must say, if you are in need of a competent bankruptcy attorney and team of professionals to help navigate you through the complexities of paperwork involved. Brittany and her assistant Jayne have you covered! They were just amazing to say the least. Being self employed with very unstable income would have been to confusing to fill out all the paperwork correctly and screw up on my part without their help, causing possible dismissal. It was worth every penny spent on making sure it didn't. I filed at the end of Sept and had my debt discharged at the end of December. Now it's time for me to move on, rebuilt my credit and not make the same mistakes that I had done before. Thanks again for everything!

We hired Brittany for our Chapter 13 bankruptcy a couple of years ago. She is very knowledgeable and thorough. She went above and beyond to help us and answer every question we had. Recently we requested to incur debt and purchase a house. Brittany gave us the same great advice, help and guidance that she gave with the initial filing and then some. We cannot recommend her enough. Thank you for everything Brittany!!!

Having just turned 60 years old, the time had come to update my and my wife's wills. I phoned two lawyers. One never did return my call. The other lawyer I called was Jan. Despite it being late on a Friday afternoon, she answered immediately! She took the time to understand our needs and promptly sent me a multi page form to complete. About a week later we met to review her work and recommendations. Jan set up a trust for us, updated our wills, provided a durable power of attorney and a health care power of attorney. After everything was signed and notarized (Jan is a Notary Public) she provided all documents in a tabbed 3 ring binder for easy reference. All documents were also scanned and emailed to me. As such, we now also have it stored on a thumb drive. Access to Jan, her attention to detail, sense of urgency and skill in this area of the law are each impressive. Taken together, these attributes separate Jan from almost all others in the profession. I would certainly endorse and recommend Jan for any estate planning needs.

Our company retained Janean Kelly, MBA, JD, in early 2016 for a contract dispute between our firm and a delinquent corporate client, a Washington corporation, with the case to be heard in Nevada. Ms. Kelly is a business attorney, local to our office, and is licensed both in Washington State and Nevada; thus, she was the logical choice for our needs, and we were not disappointed. We felt we were represented exceptionally well by Ms. Kelly in that matter. Her expertise in business, business law and contracts was evident, but she also was able to make complicated legal issues understandable to the layperson. Also, and importantly, through the course of the case, Ms. Kelly was excellent at communicating regularly the status of the case and prompt in returning all communications from us. Although the case for which we retained Ms. Kelly’s services has since settled, we continue to utilize her services for all our business needs. Quite simply, her work ethics are beyond reproach. We highly recommend the services of Janean Kelly, MBA, JD.

Jan handles my company's contracts, contract review and real estate transactions. Her attention to detail is second to none. A particular review resulted in a long-established mortgage company making several revisions and additions to their boiler plate agreements because of the shortfalls and errors Jan discovered. Jan is thoughtful, thorough, and attentive. She always has your back...

Kate Gamble was recommended to me by two friends, one of whom is an attorney and the other is an RN. Ms.Gamble came to my house and we sat together for over an hour as I told her who it was I wanted to act as the Executor my estate after my death and who it was I wanted to inherit and what it was I wanted each person to inherit and if there was something in particular I wanted to go to specific friends or family or organizations. Ms. Gamble listened carefully, answered any questions I had and made sure I understood everything. She is clearly an experienced and intelligent Attorney and I could not be more happy with the whole experience. I highly recommend her.

Ten years ago Richard was just ok. Although recommending a Special Needs Trust for my parents' wills turned out to be an unnecessary and expensive proposition. In needing to dissolve this SNT following both of their passing, we sought a meeting with him, but had a Zoom meeting instead. He simply read our emailed questions back to us with out answering them. He was not helpful and seemed to be confused, just referring us to other associates for things we needed.

Two years ago my wife and I selected Richard on the strength of friends' recommendations. We very quickly realized we had chosen wisely. He prepared a complete estate planning package for us - trust, wills, durable powers of attorney for asset management and health care, and advance health directives. At first meeting he projected a quiet confidence that immediately set us at ease. From initial conference through document filing Richard was the consummate professional, knowledgeable, approachable, thoughtful, responsive, patient, and caring. His staff also exhibited those same fine attributes throughout. Together Richard and staff made our estate planning a most pleasant and productive experience. Richard brings to his practice many strengths. The ones we most appreciated were his willingness to listen carefully to what we thought were our needs, his ability to clarify a complex subject and thereby help us better understand and refine our needs, and his calm, reassuring manner of gently guiding - never pushing - us toward the products most appropriate to meet those needs. Three months ago we again had need of Richard's services. We received a panicked call from the escrow company handling the refinance of our home advising we needed to remove it from our trust 'right then' in order for the refinance to move forward to closing a few days away. I phoned Richard at 5:00 pm that day and the next morning at 10:00 am we were in his office signing the necessary documents. No muss, no fuss, just a great example of the exemplary service Richard and staff routinely provide. Richard was an absolute delight to work with throughout the entire estate planning process and again during our recent need for his expertise and services. We've already recommended him to friends and will continue to do so. I don't suppose anyone looks forward to requiring legal services, but it's comforting to know that when that time inevitably comes again we'll be able to turn to Richard for support.

My family acquired some lakefront property and decided to form an Limited Liability Company to manage it as a business within our family. We really had minimal knowledge or experience in this area. We hired Matt to steer us through this process, and found him very helpful. He provided clear explanations of the formation of the LLC, offering us guidance and options along the way to fine tune it to meet our particular situation. He answered our myriad questions in a knowledgeable, skilled fashion, meeting with us both in person and via Zoom and emails as often as we needed. The end result is a functioning LLC that is formulated to meet our family’s needs and specifications as well as fulfill all the the legal requirements of a licensed corporation. This was not an easy process, but his expertise and calm demeanor got us effectively past many difficulties. I would highly recommend Matt Lind for your family’s legal/estate planning needs.

Matt was referred to us by one of his associates, Richard Tizzano. Matt is not responsive by phone and extremely slow with completing the most basic tasks. He took several months to complete setting up an LLC. He met with the prospective members numerous times answering questions about both the LLC and the Special Needs Trust from which the assets would come. Subsequently, he took on the case of dissolving the SNT, in which only some of the beneficiaries were involved in the LLC. He never met with both of the co-executors of the SNT, and was conflicted in his actions by favoring the members of the LLC over the other beneficiaries. He never took meeting requests or returned phone calls from the co-executor who was not part of the LLC! It was a definite conflict of interest on his part. He made numerous errors in his calculations and capital gains tax implications. He definitely should not be advertising himself as a Real Estate attorney.

I used Rhonda to set up a will and a trust. As other's have said, she's straightforward and very knowledgeable. She is thoughtful in her recommendations and explains the law and lets you make the decisions. I do not understand the negative reviews. Perhaps they were disappointed when Rhonda stood up for the rights of her elder clients instead of family members.

My mother had dementia and hired her. This attorney disposed of her property, put her in a nursing home, and never contacted family. Once I realized what was happening and emailed this attorney, she responded with "your mother never wants to see you or hear from you ever again." I was referred to Ronda by another highly recommended attorney who was unavailable. I am real impressed by her knowledge of her subject area and straightforwardness in her dealings. When my Mom was unable to come to her office, Rhonda came to the nursing home for her to sign things. She also knew what to do to make things easier for everyone. I can see where men may have a problem with her if they have issues with strong women. If you want someone who really knows the in and outs of her specialty, I highly recommend her.

I went to Mr. Moran, even though his price was higher then most around our area. Pros: he was quick to get us in, and he was straight to the point. Cons: He got frustrated when we had additional questions about our case, and he did not explain certain things clearly like, our house and auto loans. I had a quick question about our bankruptcy a year and half after it was discharged, and he did not return our calls, I even offered to pay for the answer, and I actually had to consult another attorney for free because he never responded. My co-worker was doing bankruptcy same time we were, and found a cheaper lawyer in Silverdale, who accepted payments, and also made sure all questions were answered.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
