I would give a negative 5 stars if possible. This is worst law firm. I had to get a new attorney because they lied and didn't do anything. For years. They cost me thousands in my settlement because of way they handles case at first.

Chad handled my disability claim with the social security office after they had turned me down. He was easy to work with. Very thorough and patient. He put a lot on hours in on my behalf. Explained the process well, answered my questions, and kept me informed as to what was happening with my case. He even assisted me in getting up to Salt Lake for my hearing. It was a pleasure to work with him.

Kim and I worked together in law school and we have been professional colleagues since then. She worked closely as my mentor while I was on the Moot Court team at BYU Law School. Thanks in part to her good work as my mentor and coach, I took first place in the BYU competition and our team placed in the National Championships in New York City. Kim is smart without being arrogant and knows how to cut to the heart of problems. I would gladly recommend her legal skills and abilities. Her clients are lucky to work with her!

Kimberly helped us set up the right kind of estate plan for our family, and at a great price. She followed a very efficient 3-step process: 1) helped us brainstorm what we wanted, 2) drafted the appropriate documents, and 3) met with us in person throughout the process to answer questions and help us get the kind of estate plan we wanted. This process helped us avoid sinking a ton of time into the planning, and gave us plenty of opportunity to make sure it was arranged just the way our family needed. Very highly recommended!

We started our estate planning with Marc in 1996. My father passed away in 2015 and everything went exactly as planned. Marc and his staff provide excellent service, it is professionally handled and they are a pleasure to work with. They helped us work through a delicate situation among siblings with understanding and patience. Our estate could not have been handled any better.

My wife and I are about to turn 60. We have a few rentals, house, and other assets. We wanted to see an estate attorney to set up our estate properly. We have 4 adult children and wanted everything to be in order. Attorney Lish did an excellent job setting up our estate. I suggested a few ideas and he was very helpful and taught me the pros and cons of my ideas. I am really glad I picked an attorney who specializes in estates to set up my will, estate, living will, etc. I can't remember all the specific sections without getting out the paperwork. At the end he gave my wife and me all the paperwork in a white binder that we were able to put in our safe at home. I'm just a local Orem/Provo guy who needed things set up properly for my wife and kids. Glad it is all completed. If I remember right he also offers a free review each year since things can change. Maybe we will go back in after 3 or 4 years for a review. I was very happy with the experience and happy to know that we have our estate set up properly.

Yaiko Carranza was my attorney during a very nasty and complicated divorce. She went above and beyond during one of the worst times in my life. She promptly responded to every call and email. She foresaw things ahead of time and gave me excellent advice that saved me and my children. I felt like she cared about and prioritized my case. I cannot recommend her enough. I cannot thank Grant and Nicole enough for the incredible work they did on my case. I was referred to them by attorneys at Kirton & McConkie for my complex divorce and custody situation, and from the start, they approached it with professionalism, deep understanding, and a level of care that went far beyond my expectations. We consider them angels on earth! I was immediately struck by their compassionate and empathetic approach, which they balanced beautifully with professionalism. They truly prioritized my family’s safety and well-being, providing the strategic guidance and expertise we needed. At the same time, they were very good about being mindful of costs and never cut corners. Before I found them, every other attorney I spoke with seemed either unhopeful or uncertain about our options. Grant was the first to offer me a real strategy. His approach to the initial petition was particularly important in keeping us safe and setting the groundwork for a positive outcome. Although there was an unexpected twist with the case going into default, their work was key in getting us the final results we needed. If you’re looking for a legal team that genuinely cares, is highly skilled, and will go above and beyond for your needs, I highly recommend Grant and his team. They truly are a rare find, and we are beyond grateful for their support and guidance.

I recently went through a divorce that wasn’t an easy one. Ryan and his team were amazing. They answered my questions, helped provide counsel, and protected me from some tricky situations my ex partner put me through. I was able to get 50% custody and doubt I would have had a better outcome going with anyone else. If you are in a situation and don’t know where to go or whom to reach out too consider Ryan at MHM.

This attorney avoids returning phone calls, text messages, replying to emails, and has a tendency to disappear when you need help. This attorney is quick to believe non-credible people and non-credible information about his client and jump on the bandwagon / false narrative without getting the other side of the story or prematurely before getting the proven facts. If you communicate to him how you feel things are going with his "services" and improvements you would like to see, he is quick to dismiss your concerns, act in a rude manner by calling you a name and/or make false assumptions about you based on no evidence. He doesn't like getting constructive criticism.

I was in an extremely messy divorce process with a spouse who was making false allegation. I went from having supervised visitation to joint physical and legal custody, defended me successfully in mediation, he got me a good deal in spite of the negative experience a divorce is. Mr. Cahill gave me lots of advice before the divorce filed which was a huge help for me as a client in the legal issues I faced in the process. Highly recommended.

Trent Cahill seemed like a nice professional guy when I first met him; however, during the process of him representing me, there were many times where I felt he was representing the opposing party. He tried pushing me to make decisions that would help the opposing party. He would sometimes send time sensitive emails later than I would expect something of time sensitive nature to be handled. I tried to communicate that I would prefer to receive emails sooner. But I continued to receive emails late. I would recommend Trent Cahill if you want to spend a lot of money for subpar performance and results. I would not recommend Trent Cahill if you want to be strongly represented.

In April of 1988, I retained David D. Jeffs, of Jeffs and Jeffs, Provo, Utah, to create a trust in order to protect my real property and personal assets against potential legal claims and to save them for my offspring when I died. Mr. Jeffs assured me that the assets placed in the trust would be protected. Over the years, I needed to file amendments to both the trust and will. At first, Mr. Jeffs would quickly get those changes made. However, there came a time that after THREE (3) months after a request and he had not made a much needed change, I created the amendment, signed it and had it notarized and then sent him a copy for his records. From that point on, I created any amendments to both the trust and will where Mr. Jeffs had failed to preform the task he was retained to do. I would send Mr. Jeffs emails during the interim which he would not reply to. In March of 2016, I contacted Mr. Jeffs to check on a rumor that I had heard that trust law had changed significantly and my assets were no longer protected. Mr. Jeffs told me that on July 1, 2004, Utah adopted the Utah Uniform Trust Act that changed the protection of assets and in fact, did away with any protection against potential legal claims. Mr. Jeffs indicated that he as a trust attorney had known of the proposed changes for sometime and changes to my trust could have been made to protect my assets under the proposed trust act changes. Yet, Mr. Jeffs failed to notify me of the upcoming changes so that working together, we could have made changes to the trust and protect those assets that were in it. Mr. Jeffs' lack of due diligence and professionalism to me, his client, needs to be made known to the public. He has violated several Rules of Professional Conduct including Rule 1.4, of Chapter 13, Communications with his client. I am posting this negative review on Avvo so that anyone looking for a trust attorney will be warned that David D. Jeffs lack of due diligence and professionalism and his inability to communicate with his clients. Due to my personal experience with Mr. David D. Jeffs, (#1654), of Jeffs and Jeffs, Provo, Utah, I cannot recommend him for any type of legal work especially if it is regarding a trust and will.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
