Through diligence, competency and a high degree of professionalism, Brenna untangled a very complicated, but highly impactful, legal document of mine and delivered a carefully detailed and accurate replacement. Every aspect of the original document was examined. No question was left unanswered. The new document is exactly right in communicating my intentions regarding the issues involved. With a great deal of relief and confidence, I compliment Brenna and her team that delivered a complete and dependable product. And, I must add, each communication was timely and very pleasantly delivered. I would unequivocally recommend Fine Point Law. Not only do I have a rock solid document, but, through their clear explanations for each element of it, I know and understand all of it thoroughly.

After recently completing a challenging divorce, I found myself somewhat resistant to designing a new trust. Brenna and Molly were so welcoming and patient with my stuck parts! I appreciate their knowledge and ease with the process, and realized that I looked forward to working through my doubts and worries with regard to the after death details. I am relieved that my loved ones will have an organized system through which they can carry out my wishes when I am gone. I highly recommend this law practice!

What an amazing experience! My husband and I had been putting off the task of setting up our will and trust, but we finally made it happen and Brenna made the entire process SO easy. Things like this have a tendency to feel really daunting, but Fine Point has clearly honed their system and each step was completely manageable. I can't express the relief I feel knowing that everything was set up the RIGHT way, that our children have a clear and legal safety net if anything happens to us, and that we can meet with the Fine Point team to make updates if and when we need to. Can't recommend Brenna highly enough!

Matt is a very talented immigration attorney. I contacted him on behalf of a friend who was in a complicated immigration situation. Matt was extremely knowledgeable about both federal and state laws and procedures relating to immigration. There is no clear law on the situation we were dealing with, and he was very creative in developing a strategy, and it worked! The engagement lasted several years because there were several intermediate steps that needed to take place along the way. Even though it wasn't in Matt's purview to handle those intermediate steps, he was both patient and generous with his time in helping my friend get through those successfully. Matt took my friend's case on pro bono when Matt was employed at his prior public service organization. When he moved to open his own private practice, Matt generously asked if my friend would be willing to continue the engagement with Matt in his private practice, still on a pro bono basis. In addition, Matt is very personal, even-keeled, prompt, and accommodating. It was a pleasure working with him over several years.

I think Matthew Weisner, it’s not, only, a great attorney, but very kind and caring about helping people to navigate immigration laws and fixing their problems. I was so fortunate to have Matthew as my attorney. He helped me to get the impossible, I had issues in my past, and I got legal status, despite my situation, thanks to him!

A member of the jury came to me outside the courtroom after a long and complicated trial in which I was awarded a $1MM judgement and asked what it was like to have Atticus Finch as my lawyer. You can guess what my answer was then and remains today. I have been with David and Pam for a long, long time. Their patient explanations of the law and distilling the complex out of much of our legal system relieves the frustration and dread one (at least for me) feels when faced with a legal issue, as plaintiff or defendant. One of David's stand out skills is in taking depositions, it is a joy to behold and be part of.The other is that juries like him. The respect he gives to them is well received and reciprocated in kind. Judges don't like anyone. If you see one or two stars in this review section, the reviewer was likely not being represent by David or Pamela.

I was referred to Mr.Penrose by another attorney. My case was concerned with a care giver agreement that I considered not truthful. With his great knowledge and investigative skills, Mr.Penrose found that the document had time parameters to make that document legal and binding. Mr.Penrose preserved my parents true wishes and desires for their estate. I can say without hesitation,if anyone has any questions dealing with a legal issue, contact Mr.Penrose.

Frankly put, Steven Penrose is nothing less than a miracle worker! My sibling and I retained him nearly 3 years ago to rid us of the many Gordian knots that we had to contend with due to our father's highly complicated trust and estate. He's brilliant (always a step or two ahead of any possible concerns), a fierce advocate, unquestionably dedicated, thorough, patient and treats us with the utmost respect. His knowledgeable colleagues, paralegals and staff further add to the firm's overall standard of excellence. If you're looking for the best ... you've just found it.

He is one of the few estate planning attorneys that can also handle all aspects of an estate settlement, including litigation, should the need arise. Over the years he has become our professional advisor, attorney, and good friend.

A few years ago I realized I didn’t own all of my driveway. I contacted Jordan for help. I felt I had a good case to at least obtain an easement for the portion of my driveway I had been using since I bought my home in 1987. An easement is an easement but with Jordan’s expertise I was able to negotiate a deal with the vested owner and obtain fee title for my driveway I’m for ever grateful to Jordan and would highly recommend him!!!

In fact, over the last 5 years I've have benefited from his expertise, guidance, and services for Commercial Leasing, Easements, Land Use, Clouds on Title, TIC Agreements, LLC Operating Agreements, Trust & Estate support, Equity Exchanges, and Partnership Buyout/Restructuring. As a client, I really appreciate his tenacious dedication to excellence, deep knowledge, proven track-record of success, as well as his generational vibrancy. My husband and I are both lawyers who needed our estate planning documents prepared but practice in a wholly separate area of the law. We have known Emily for years both personally and professionally and were familiar with her high ethical standards, strong work ethic and commitment to getting it right, which is why we chose her. Emily gracefully guided us through making difficult decisions and was particularly effective at educating us about the potential tax implications of our decisions. We highly recommend her.

Harriet helped me get properties and and legal 'loose ends' neatly bundled into Trusts after my husband of 29 years passed away in 2009 here in California. He was a lawyer and I was involved in his Ohio practice so I knew what competence and an honest lawyer looked like. Ms Brown came recommended and I can reiterate that recommendation. She was open and listened to what I wanted, no bafflegab, no pressure for complicated legal vehicles. She was fair with her charges and fees. There were areas in which she was not as versed and she told me upfront that I would need a specialist in these legal territories. I am happy and secure with her work and have given her name to several friends.

Jamyrson is an animal. She is one of the first attorney's I got in touch with and stood out amongst the others, tenfold. She is very busy but always made time for my questions. The legal system can be very stressful but Jamyrson kept things light and has a sense of humor which helped keeping stress levels down. Don't let her laid back approach fool you - she is so confident and knowledgeable in what she does and knows all the ins and outs of the overwhelming number of protocols/deadlines. I couldn't have asked for a better attorney or outcome, my case was somewhat minor but I feel she fought it as if everything was on the line. I couldn't be happier with Jamyrson, I just wish there was an option to give her 10 stars! She is a great person and an even better lawyer. Why are you still reading this? Hire Jamyrson already!

Stay away from Brian and his shady practices!!! My MIL who is a 65 was living in an apartment with black mold in the valley ( property management company was Golden Bee)and since the property management company failed to do their part to safely remove the mold, my MIL and her roommate searched for a contingency attorney based on low funds. She hired Brian Heit with Adept Legal Counsel PC- his old law firm is Heit Law Group. It was months of back and forth with the property management company, they moved out 7 months ago, and finally last month Mercury Insurance issued compensation and sent the check to Brian at Adept. The issue now is Brian said he sent the checks to my MIL and her roommate but claims they were returned back to his offices and when my MIL and roommate asked for more info like tracking info, etc he has halted all communication. Since then he has closed his Westlake office, disconnected his 2 phone numbers, and won’t answer emails or chats. I contacted him on social media and he blocked me after trying to find out how to obtain my MIL check. It’s like he took the $50,000 and walked off. My MIL is not sure what to do at this point. Mercury won’t reissue a check, I’ve tried to contact him on all social media platforms with no results. I looked at reviews for his old firm in Miami - Heit Law Group P.C. And it seems he has a history of scamming those who cannot pay up front. Filed a complaint to the CA Bar as well. My MIL and room mate were supposed to receive 16k each and Brian Heit was supposed to receive 18k. He now has all of it with no resolution. He has offices supposedly in Covina and Santa Cruz?

Brian Heit has been helpful on a number of legal issues for me: business purchase and new business consulting, commercial property management, employee relations, family law and several contract reviews. Some of the issues were very stressful and emotional for me. He did a great job of easing my anxieties with his knowledge of the law, but he also did it in a way that shared his depth of knowledge yet still explained everything in "non-legal terms" that felt accessible. He is reliable, honest and a good listener. He also did a great job of explaining different options to me. So far, everything he has worked an has been resolved to my liking.

I was grsteful to get an appoibtmfnt for orgal advice on my custody case, yet surprised when Hess advised me another family coyrt case would be coming up. She showed up for that new case, for the OTHER party. Making repeated threatening statements while wuestioning me, she was removed from the case and forced to leave the courtroom. However months later, after the completion of the case, Hess personally showed up at a retreat center i was residing and participating at, WITH MY EX. The two of them heckled, berated and harassed me, keeping me trapped in a room, barring my physical ability to exit the room and the abuse. I had to fight my way out. Hess then tried to use her legal authority yo play victim to me. If you are considering Hess to represent you, know the risk of hiring a person who has behaved in ways that should get her disbarred, that she is likely to act so poorly again.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
