Glenn has been a godsend for our family, starting with setting up a Living Trust for my father and a Special Needs Trust for my brother. Every time I've had a question, whether it was financial, tax issues, or difficulties in dealing with assets to be placed inside the Special Needs Trust, and dealing with Social Security and Medicare, Glenn was always a phone call away to provide guidance and a sure hand. Many nights that could have been sleepless, weren't because of the help I got from Glenn. I highly recommend him.

Claudia was very thorough and offered excellent examples of content for this unique trust. She explained how it could be used and not used for his benefit. Her subject knowledge was very important as it helped me anticipate future expectations for my son's quality of life. Her preparation of materials was exemplary, submitted in a very clear and understandable document. I most appreciate that she did not try to use jargon or vagaries regarding the aspects of this trust. She was very understandable speaking in very plain language in her answers to my questions and concerns. I especially appreciate how accessible she is. For this kind of trust, a special needs trust, I highly recommend her.

I utilized Claudia Pringles' services after attending an educational workshop she ran at my local High School. She set up my son's Special Needs Trust and provided legal support through tough times with my son's IEP team. Her advice and encouragement was invaluable. It is easy to be intimidated by people who speak as though they know more than you, but Claudia was very clear on what my son's rights were and gave me the strength to advocate on his behalf successfully. "Don't give away the goat!" Thanks to Claudia I never will.

As a Ph.D. with some formal legal training in autism-related education issues, I never imagined I would require the assistance of an attorney to rectify an essentially problem with my child's program. A component was missing that could be easily added; without this component, the child had demonstrably regressed, and I had the video to prove it. Yet I met resistance several times across 6 months, as the problem intensified. I discovered that merely slapping down my law books with the pertinent passage was getting me nowhere. And while I did my best to be dispassionate and was never impolite, my stomach was in knots and I was finding myself having to work not to lose my temper. I know there's an old saying, "The lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client." In representing my child, I was much in the same position. I needed someone who, while knowing the law, could remain emotionally detached and professional. A friend had enthusiastically recommended Claudia I. Pringles, Esq. to me. She put me immediately at my ease. She listened respectfully (including during the ranting-and-raving part of my exposition). She interrupted only when, driven by emotion, I was unclear, but otherwise listened patiently. (And this was for our first meeting, for which she did not charge.) Claudia was AMAZING. She accompanied me to a meeting I'd arranged with the essential parties. She was gracious to everyone, and approached the problem not as if we were filming an episode of Law and Order (my style) but as a subtle but skilled negotiator. She acknowledged the school's concerns, and offered as one of several suggestions a means of neutralizing any consequences to them. At the same time, she never backed down as to what my child needed. Her focus was always how, together as a team, we could surmount any hurdle. One meeting - and the problem was solved, with everyone leaving the room feeling good about themselves, my child, my advisor, and me. I know other attorneys in this field who would have been good. But two have a more diffuse focus in this area and others handle other areas of law, as well. I wanted someone who eat, slept, and breathed special education law - and I have yet to hear of anyone I would turn to other than Claudia Pringles.

I have spent a number of sessions with Mr Bartsch over the past three years and have come away feeling fully satisfied with the service. I think the aspect I like the most about Adam is that he is not in a big hurry to charge for every minute of his time. He waits until tangible results are produced and then bills you for specific services rendered. The results are of high quality and the charges are fair. You can't say that about all lawyers. Additionally, Adam is just interesting to talk to. He knows his area of expertise extremely well and he is a good listener.

Andy Delaney is the best attorney on planet earth. He is Tom Brady meets William Wallace meets Gandalf. My wife and I were in an all-of-a-sudden horrible and complex situation through no fault of our own (which I won’t be getting into here). We exhausted several family and friend recommendations for legal counsel in this area but it seemed that no one could/would help with our case. Then, after seeing the high Google review ratings, we decided to take a chance on MDR who were at least willing to meet with me. About five minutes into the meeting, realizing the complexity of the situation, the guy I was meeting with says, “I think I need to get my boss.” Enter Andy… Within one hour I walked out with a cohesive plan of action, and (despite MONTHS of research on my own) a hundred times more understanding of the legal circumstances we were in. Andy ended up taking over our case and delivered like you read about. I can’t say enough good things about Andy. The dude saved our bacon when we needed it most. There are already plenty of reviews talking about how intelligent, professional, funny, and caring he is (all of which I absolutely agree with); so I'll just say that if you're seeking legal counsel and you find anyone on earth that's better than Andy... I owe you $50. He is the best there is, end of story. Andy is the GOAT.

Walks the walk! Andrew Delaney is unique in that he truly believes in the principles he advocates for. Most of the world, especially at the professional/fancy-degree level, is motivated primarily by money, but Andy was persistently focused on doing the right thing. Not pretending to do the right thing, and not doing the right thing to the extent required by his job, but actually doing the right thing for its own sake. Andy has a brilliant mind, equally able to make witty jokes and cite obscure procedural rules from memory, and an unheard-of work ethic, willing to focus on a case above his own needs at 9pm or on a Saturday, and still be good-humored about it. He worked tirelessly for us, preparing his strategy perfectly, piecing together everything, thread by thread, until he had a beautiful tapestry that showed the truth of the matter in a direct way. Andy also does one other thing that is unheard of for attorneys in his (exceptional) skill bracket as well: he is willing to communicate. The entire time, he gave feedback and explanations and was never too important to take a call and genuinely care. Most attorneys of his station will let you talk to the assistant and *maybe* get called back, but the only time his assistant replied for us was when he was out sick and, even there, she was well-informed and gave us some useful information. Never once did we feel like anything less than real people who mattered, represented by an attorney who actually cared about our outcome. Finally, thanks to his preparation, we wound up getting well over double the amount we even thought was possible to get. With anyone else, generally not willing to listen to the clients or take the time to go over everything, we're convinced that outcome would have been impossible. If you want an attorney who has real principles, truly cares, and gets results, Andy is the person to talk to. Thank you again!

Dear Brooks and the Gravel & Shea Team, I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for the exceptional legal representation provided by Brooks during our recent lawsuit. From the very first moment, Brooks displayed a remarkable ability to connect with my teenage daughter, earning her attention and trust immediately. This was no small feat, and it made a world of difference to our family during a very challenging time. Brooks's expertise, dedication, and compassionate approach were evident in every aspect of his work. He took the time to thoroughly explain the legal process, answered all our questions with patience and clarity, and always kept us informed about the progress of the case. His professionalism and commitment to our case were truly outstanding. What impressed us the most was Brooks's ability to make my daughter feel comfortable and confident throughout the entire process. His empathetic and understanding nature provided her with a sense of security and reassurance that was invaluable to us as a family. We are extremely happy with the outcome of the case and cannot thank Brooks enough for his hard work and dedication. His efforts have had a profound impact on our lives, and we are forever grateful. Thank you, Brooks, and the entire team at Gravel & Shea, for everything you have done for us. We wholeheartedly recommend your services to anyone in need of exceptional legal representation.

Amy Davis reached out to me during the most difficult time in my life, when I lost my beloved puppy Berkeley at the hands of an evil human being. She offered her services pro bono because she is that kind, and is a huge animal lover. I honestly do not know how I would have gotten through the legal process that took three years without her by my side guiding me along and answering all of my questions. She cares and works relentlessly for her clients and is someone I not only would hire again, she is someone I am honored to call a great friend.

Our 15-minute discussion covered plenty of ground with lots of moving parts, and I now have a solid understanding of which path to take to rectify my situation. We discussed the potential outcome of a decision path I am considering, along with the likelihood of certain events unfolding either way. I've hired Stark Law to represent me on 2 real estate transactions. They were incredibly responsive, (mostly) easy to work with, and came highly recommended from my real estate agents. So why 1 star? One highly concerning episode: Stark Law mishandled my escrow funds (they inappropriately returned escrow funds to the sellers, and when it came time for them to send me the $$ they were supposed to have held in escrow, the money was not there). Rather than owning up to their mistake and assuring me they'd make things right, the Stark Law team tried to power play me and convince me that they were in the right. I had to re-send them the signed documents from the closing and chains of emails. With much resistance and deception from Stark Law (and many follow ups on my part), I did finally get my money back, but they never owned up to their mistake. I would not hire them again and wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

We sold our house by owner--and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that we wouldn't have been able to do it as successfully and easily as we did if it wasn't for Stark Law. I am SO grateful that a sweet friend of ours recommended them to us! From the very beginning, Brian answered EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. of my emails with incredibly helpful and supportive answers without ever making me feel like I was inundating him with questions (which I was :))...and within a very short amount of time as well (which is HUGE, especially when trying to navigate something as potentially complicated as a real estate transaction.) Eve helped me navigate all the scheduling and kept us on track...and Andrew walked through the whole process with us, explained everything to me with no judgment and a TON of patience, made sure we had all the information we needed while also helping us gather information they needed from us, and also answered every email and every question I had within an hour and with kindness, professionalism and expertise. There was not one moment that I felt like they weren't firmly on Team Linden, and thanks to them, this home sale was the smoothest (and frankly, most enjoyable) real estate transaction we have ever had. If you need a real estate attorney and are looking for a positive and smooth home sale, I HIGHLY recommend Stark Law. :)

I explained that I truly couldn't afford anymore legal fees. It ended up being $600...for an agreement that I typed and they transferred and filed (crazy right). I was given Tammy Heffernan's contact information as I was relocating to VT from NY The closing and everything subsequent to it up to 3 weeks later has been nothing but atrocious. Now almost 3 weeks later my escrow gets released. I have given Ms Heffernan the last of what funds I had access to in the form of a money order to which were to go to VT taxes. Ms Heffernan has not responsibly taken her role as an attorney seriously and has adamantly ignored my texts, calls, as well as email messages asking questions and when can I expect the $1210.85 back since they were not applied to,the VT taxes as it was short. I am the mother of a recently fallen soldier who was only 23 when he passed away in 6/2018. I came here to start fresh and get away from, the memories that haunt me. I'm,a Gold Star Mom whose health has been declining since learning my son's terrible fate and live on a tight monthly income. I moved here and started off with barely anything and in good faith have Ms,Heffernan, more than,90% of my monthly check and this is how she behaves as a "professional?" Taking from the poor like Robin Hood? If you don't have a financial worry in the world and do not have to live worrying about finances forever then Tammy is your go to attorney. But if you're like the majority of Americans watching your p's & q's then i highly recommend moving on to someone with more professionalism and manners.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
