I believe the woman I talk to her name was Karen. She was absolutely amazing at helping me figure out stuff with my name change. She made it aware that they don’t do adult name changes, but helps me in the right direction.

I had to get a custody order written up with the mother of my child, he understood everything I wanted and made recommendations. Smart guy, he knows his stuff. Pays attention to every detail. Answered all my questions effortlessly and took care of all my concerns. 10/10 everyone told me I’d be selling my life away to go to a lawyer. He was very thoughtful with my money and refunded what he didn’t use.

Not knowing where to begin with my estate planning, I found the initial Zoom seminar Salem Law offered very helpful in identifying what I needed to consider. We set up several appointments to cover various aspects I needed for a will, irrevocable trust and health care directive. I am very pleased with the outcome of my estate plan and would recommend Daniel Umlauf and the whole team at Salem Law to anyone looking to plan their estate.

When I met with Mr. Parker, he took the time to ask questions and listen in order to determine how to arrange my estate with the best interests of myself and my loved ones in mind. He made me feel at ease with personal decisions and family matters and had a calm way of explaining difficult concepts so that everyone understood and could make the right decisions. By the time the process was complete, everyone in my family felt the documents were created with compassion, fairness and clarity for everyone concerned. And as a single parent, I was also pleasantly surprised at how his costs compared to those of other law firms in town. Mr. Parker is a sole proprietor who works out of his home, so he is able to provide a high level of professional services at great prices. After doing more research into typical estate planning costs, I've come to believe that Mr. Parker provides the best value of professional estate planning services in town, so he is my first recommendation when anyone asks if I know of a good attorney for estate planning services.

I am a lawyer myself, but I needed to hire a North Carolina lawyer to take care of some issues for a relative there. Diane Ford was absolutely excellent and got it done promptly and well despite several complications. In addition to handling a fraught situation extremely well from a legal perspective, she was compassionate and comforting with my elderly relative who needed the help. A+++, highly recommend all around. And you know when another lawyer likes your work instead of picking at it, that's saying something...

Making the decision to help my 89 year old Mother to maintain the remainder of her years without making difficult decisions was a difficult process for me also. As a child it's difficult to see your parent age and for me I wanted to make sure that I could provide the care she needed as long as I could. It took her awhile to say " I think it's time to make some decisions". I looked at the list of attorneys and called and called trying to get what information that I needed. GOD led me to King Law Firm. I spoke with Attorney Diane Ford with King Law. She informed me of the options my Mother could make. Attorney Ford was professional and also listened to my concerns about what options were available. Attorney Ford was professional, kind and compassionate. She promptly provided information and I relayed this information to my Mother. A decision was made and Attorney Ford and other staff members kept us updated. It was a relief to obtain POA for my Mother and knowing that I could make the decisions to keep her home with me and have the care that she needed. My Mother stated that Attorney Ford was kind to her and treated her with dignity. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. I appreciate the kindness, compassion, peace and the knowledge that was provided by Attorney Ford.

Whitney & her Team helped navigate the complex process of Child Custody Laws with our Grandchildren. Without Whitney’s exceptional knowledge of the law, we would have been “lost” in the Court System: Gabrielle is without a doubt a VERY Valuable asset to Whitney’s Team! Ms. Taylor was recommended to me by another attorney because she specializes in family and domestic law. In brief I will say that she is efficient and knowledgeable. I didn't have any questions she couldn't answer; she had all the information in her head. In addition to all this she was very empathetic about my/our situation, and I felt good about hiring her. It was obvious very quickly into our first conversation that I was not just another payday for her. That meant a lot. I highly recommend her.

Brian did an excellent job helping us navigate a unique family law issue and helped obtained a birth certificate for our son. He did a great job of investigating state and local requirements, preparing the necessary documentation and evidence, and presenting our case to agency officials. He continued to work with the local and state authorities to see that we received the necessary documentation in a timely manner. We were very pleased with his effort, legal skill, and commitment to client service.

Knowledgeable, empathetic, funny, polite and reasonably priced. These are all descriptions of Attorney John R. Fonda of the Fonda Law Firm. I'm a Landlady with investment rental properties in the Triad. I met Attorney Fonda at the W/S Forsyth Co. Government Centers waiting area, along with other Landlords and Property Managers. As we waited for our hearings to be heard. When he walked in, I found him to be pleasantly approachable. He had us laughing and talking to each other. That really helped us ease the tension of the situation. We informed him that we were Landlords with eviction cases. He offered us his Landlord informational pamphlet of the legal do's and don'ts called "Landlord's Guide To Summary Ejectment Proceedings In North Carolina. That he wrote, and at no charge! My PROFESSIONAL TENANT had a Legal Aid Attorney that first delayed the case by continuance, then had the case dismissed. All of which the tenant and Section eight withheld rent for two months. I called the number on the pamphlet and hired Attorney Fonda to redo my case. He did an excellent job informing and advising me through email and phone calls. He understands and get what Landlords are up against in the Court System. As we have rights to. After sending the tenant a NOTICE OF DEFAULT letter and followed up by an ACTION FOR SUMMARY EJECTMENT NOTICE. This Professional Tenant couldn't flea the property fast enough. I would definitely retain his services again and refer him to other Landlords with the same problem I had. He is truly GOOD PEOPLE. Thanks, Attorney Fonda. Rhonda Underwood. His explanations were simple and he allowed time for my husband and me to talk through our preferences. I especially appreciated that he provided an advanced planning worksheet so that our in-person meeting was not too long. When we finished, we had originals and copies neatly organized. Mr. Harris was a great help to me as I recently made a will and advancedirective. He was able to advise me and my spouse with our specific situation. Every family is unique and it is necessary to have an attorney that can explain different situations that may occur upon sickness, end of life, and death. I recently lost both of my parents and because of their advance directives and will it allowed me to not feel guilty at the end of their life. I was able to carry out their wishes and not feel guilty or unsure. This was actually a gift to me. It has allowed me to know I made the right decisions for them. Mr. Harris was able to help me create my will and advanced directive so that my family will know in advance my wishes. I feel a great sense of relief now that I have this information and at any point can contact Mr. Harris for changes to both of these important documents. Mr. Harris is very personable and knowledgable, also easy to talk with about estate planning. I would recommend him for legal advice pertaining to this matter!

At the time of her employment with Wells Fargo, Shaida Horner was assigned to work with me as co-executors of a family member's estate. I approached Mr. Rutledge about a consumer law problem with a merchant, which involved my elderly mother as well as myself and some friends. Mr. Rutledge was concerned, asked intelligent questions, and listened intently to the situation. He made comments that were helpful. I was able to get the case resolved over several months with Mr. Rutledge's help. He was also flexible with his billing: instead of charging me for every single email i sent him, he only charged for emails to which he made a substantial reply. In my experience, that is an unusual billing practice for a lawyer (and one which I sincerely appreciated). He only charged me $100 for the initial consultation, well below his hourly rate, and we probably talked for 1.25+ hours. The only negative thing I would note is that he was sometimes difficult to get a hold of; I left message after message. I got tired of hearing his lengthy menu-driven message on his office phone. Overall, I strongly recommend Mr. Rutledge for a consumer law matter.

Writing this review because of the unacceptable and costly administrative errors made during the handling of my case. Egregious errors include the attorney failing to prepare any argument points for negotiation, blaming his performance on his failing memory, double billing for hours already paid for, and ultimately *losing my settlement check* within his own office. He billed me for time he spent looking for the check he had misplaced, and withdrew funds from my settlement check without permission or providing a bill for services. I know these administrative errors are atypical for law firms. Unfortunately, I made a poor choice in choosing this firm to represent me.

Very friendly team, approachable and knowledgeable. They helped get our small business on track by gently correcting many things we had started blindly.

Nothing against this firm in terms of expenses, Divorce is an expensive ordeal and does take significant research and work to formalize a proper agreement based on special situations and individual situations. While one must be prepared for such legal costs over all the experience with Hartsoe and Associates was amazing. Specially, me being in the US Army, I was not always available for reaching out to, but despite they handled my case exceptionally well and came out with an amicable out of court settlement ! which is something I wanted from the start. Thank you Steven Grainger in particular for your legal representation and also the staff in connection.

Wow what an outstanding firm..Even though they were not able to assist me in my unique situation, they still took the time to advise me in path I needed to take and gave me a referral to somewhere that might be able to help..even took the time to call me back just to give me more information that could help me.. I really hate that they couldn't help me because this is the type of firm I want to represent me. Someone who is there for the client and not the pay check...thanks again for the help.

This entire team is amazing, and truly goes above and beyond in every attempt to get their client closed, even when that means cleaning up a mess to get paperwork corrected from "the bank." Cheryl, Melisa, and Patty are quite the team, and Mr. Jacobs is very kind and patient, going out of his way to ensure that you're comfortable and understanding of what you're signing. 10/10 would recommend!

We did a real estate closing with this firm. The closing went fine but the assistant made a mistake and mailed the closing check to an incorrect address. When it came time to reimburse me for my costs she said she would only pay part of the fees. If I ever have a need for a real estate office I will surely look elsewhere.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
