I highly recommend Brent Warkentine and his staff. After working with other lawyers and spending unnecessary money without making any progress with my ex, Brent was a game-changer. He is highly experienced, efficient, kind, smart, and no-nonsense. With Brent in my corner, I felt confident and heard. He is a clear and honest straight-talker. You will feel assured that you are in the best hands, as there is no situation he hasn’t seen or dealt with in some way. My case was emotional and contentious and Warkentine Law kept me on an even knell while moving the issues forward professionally and successfully. I am very satisfied and relieved with the outcome. As well, Brent is mindful not to charge for unnecessary work or drive up costs and helped me stay focused on the big picture instead of getting caught up in small issues. Brent is ethical and fair, with an unmatched reputation as an effective advocate. I’m blessed to have found Warkentine Law and will continue to use Brent and his staff for any legal issues in the future.

Brent definitely earned his fees for my case! Difficult ex and difficult circumstances overall. Brent, Vivian and Amy handled everything professionally and with attention to the details. They also were compassionate and caring making an extremely stressful situation more bearable. Brent’s knowledge of the law and how courts and judges react to mitigating circumstances is extremely helpful. His recommendations comes from experience which helps in calming a client who’s dealing with difficult situations like divorce for the first time. So hire Brent and let him steer the ship. You’ll be grateful you did.

Working with Law Offices of Said Sharbini, has been pleasant from start to finish. I live in Florida had a couple of warrants that needed to be taken care of and Contacted a few lawyers there; a couple were a bit cheaper. Called Mr. Sharbini and we had a nice conversation. I was concerned he was a little bit more expensive than the others, but like he said, "You pay for what you get". I took the chance; I'm glad I did he got Amanda Borsman on my case she was able to get one settled the next day and took about two months to get the second one handled. During that time, her or the office, never left me waiting responded quickly and explained the law where I understood she was patient and listened to my concerns. I loved the results from both cases; even got a portion of my trust fund back. Very honest firm and Highly Recommend them.

Honestly, hiring Said was a better experience than I even hoped for. Not only did he keep my desired solution in mind when he took on my case, but he kept me informed of the process, timeline, and gave me post resolution factors to consider. Without hiring Said, I’m beyond certain that I would have been treated unfairly throughout my complaint process and I would not have been made whole.

I engaged Attorney Pigott recently to help me develop a number of complex, interrelated agreements. He spent a great deal of time understanding the situation under which we were trying to operate. I was amazed at how quickly and thoroughly he grasped what we were trying to accomplish. He then proceeded to draft accurate and coordinating agreements that were right on target. In my mind, Attorney Pigott is what a lawyer should be... a good partner!

From the day I first started speaking with Dave I felt that he was a true professional but also a down to earth and "normal" guy. With very little to no prior experience with the legal system I was both nervous and confused. I felt that the legal system and other lawyers spoke in their own language or focused on the process, not me and my concerns or needs. This again offered me no comfort nor sense of control of my future! Dave was the professional that offered me the credentials to prove he was qualified, but more importantly I could relate to as a person. Dave always answers my calls, text and emails. Dave is there to clarify and explain things but talks with me, not to me, in practical and realistic language. It is Dave's style of communication and composure that creates a professional working relationship that feels like you have a "lawyer friend" on staff, not an Attorney you have hired. Dave has not always given me the answer I wanted to hear but he has told me the truth and prepared me for decisions I have had to make or accept. I consider Dave one of my friends and I believe he works hard to continue to ensure me, my family and our future is protected, prepared and supported on any legal questions or concerns. I encourage every one to do your home work on Dave's service to our country, humanitarian efforts and local contributions. I am a real person and have experienced real life issues. I write this as encouragement to others who find them selves confused and concerned on a particular legal issue. If you are a "real person", average Joe or an elite professional, I ensure you..... you will be able to relate to Dave. Good luck and best wishes, -B. Mr. Garlan is a remarkable lawyer who genuinely cares about his clients and is affordable!! I (unfortunately) had to use him twice in one calendar year, very stressful time and he put my wife and I at ease. He deeply cared about my case, he cares about me as a person and how I was handling it all. Both times he was completely invested in my case, was easily accessible anytime of day and responded quickly. He was aggressive and got the results in our favor. The IRS made a mistake and thought I owed 5 figures from several years ago from income that they double counted. Not a fun letter to get, and the incredibly incompetent IRS agents were impossible to communicate, let alone reason with. (How do you get 80K new employees and $8 billion and still require fax and snail mail as your only options for communication years later???). Elizabeth and Jason took great care of me, quickly identified the mistake, and then dealt with the IRS for months to get them to arrive at the conclusion that, actually, I didn't owe 5 figures and instead they gave me a $5 refund. They were highly competent, super on-top of communications and updates, and at no point did I ever have to call them for an update. They would call me. Highly recommend their services.

If you’re looking for a corrupt law firm, look no further. Claire and her husband Daniel, are in cahoots to work to get domestic violence criminals off the hook. I am a survivor of DV from a multiple-time offender ex who left bruises on me in front of our 3 year old and newborn baby. Justice was not served to my ex- which is wrong on so many levels. Daniel left cryptic notes on my apartment door at a time where retaliation was a high risk. Luckily, I was seeking shelter elsewhere. I cannot imagine another woman who makes money off of working to silence battered women and children. Utterly horrifying.

“I am extremely pleased that I was able to locate attorney Arsenault to help me form my new Denver area small business earlier this year. I have had a lot of attorney interactions through my 30 years in corporate America and now small business America. John recommended a variety of corporate options and structures, we ultimately settled on a Colorado LLC. John was fast, provided all documents quickly, and not only answered all of my questions during the formation process, he had a very keen insight and suggested the route we ultimately decided. John also proposed other considerations for me including partnership related points, employment law considerations, and intellectual property rights to consider such as filing a trademark for my brand. I hope to work with John in the future as he provided a wealth of knowledge on options for my business. I hope to continue working with John into the future with my other business ventures!” I fully encourage and recommend John Arsenault to anyone looking for a great man and a great attorney!

Bob represented me for close to one year during my divorce case. From time to time throughout the process he would state that my case was one of the most difficult cases he had handled. About two weeks before the case was to be finalized, he suggested that I should "fire him" (stated over the phone) because I spoke up about my concerns. He also stated that he had other cases he was working on. I called the mediator assigned to our case and left a voice message about this conversation. The mediator did not return my call. For over a year Bob had been paid a large sum of money to represent me. At that time he had me between a "rock and a hard place". He actually walked out of his office on me during two occasions. I did not feel respected as a client, I felt trapped and exploited. By then I couldn't afford to start over financially and time was closing in. If he didn't want to represent me, he should have spoken up months earlier. Believe me, I have thought long and hard before sharing my story. I have tried to examine this experience from many point of views in an effort to be fair. The divorce was hard enough, our client/attorney relationship just added another level of frustration. To Bob's credit the divorce was finalized. However, to this very date, alimony and the property settlements as written were never secured.

Bob represented me during my divorce. The situation was rather complicated but Bob was able to get to the root of the issues and maintain focus in the face of various challenges. I found Bob to be extremely smart, competent, and interested in balancing time spent (cost) versus value achieved. He consistently kept me focused on the important issues. Bob was very easy to work with as his style was laid back, jovial, and flexible. I strongly recommend Bob Cooper as an attorney. I was very satisfied with his services and feel that my divorce was easier, fairly concluded, and done at a reasonable cost due to Bob's (and his entire offices) services.

Not only is Bob Cooper an excellent lawyer, he has a great understanding of the human issues that come up when there is a legal issue. He helped me following my divorce with child support and parenting time decisions. Bob is not an attorney who is interested in going head-to-head with other attorneys (though he is great at that, if needed) - he is most interested in everyone, and especially children, arriving at the best outcome with the least amount of pain and suffering. If there were six stars, I'd give him all of them.

This office is not professional. Trust me when I say stay away from this attorney's office! Sure they seem to care and be professional at first but once you give them money it is a whole different story. I lost my appeal with child support. Then I said ok we can do another appeal but the attorney wrote me an a email saying I would lose and no longer be representing me because I was upset they wrote a terrible appeal in the first place! They turned in an appeal last minute to the court as well as overcharged me for telling them they forgot certain detail and to fix some grammatical errors.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
