I had the pleasure of working with Susan Zereini as my attorney, and I couldn't be more impressed with her professionalism and expertise. From the start, it was clear that Susan knows the legal system inside and out. She offers straightforward, honest advice without any overpromises, which I found both refreshing and reassuring. In court, Susan is a force to be reckoned with. She presents her arguments with a depth of knowledge and confidence that leaves no doubt about her capabilities. Her ability to navigate complex legal situations while maintaining a professional demeanor is truly exceptional. If you're looking for an attorney who is not only skilled but also dedicated to your case, Susan Zereini is the one to have on your side. She delivers results with a no-nonsense approach that ensures you feel both supported and well-represented throughout the process.

I wanted to wait a few months before posting a review of Siemon Law Firm, just to fully process my divorce journey and experience using this law firm. Overall, I had a fairly pleasant experience and my attorney, Jordan Edwards, got me everything that I asked for. However, there are a few observations that I want prospective clients to understand when not only dealing with this particular law firm, but any divorce lawyer in general. 1) These lawyers do not care about your emotions or what you are going through. They are here to represent you to the best of their ability while refreshing the retainer as much as they can. When you speak with them, skip the small talk and pleasantries because every single second is being charged. This brings me to my second point. 2) Ensure that your correspondence with your respective lawyer is structured, which will reduce the amount of times you need to have a telephonic conversation or send an email. One of the tactics I noticed that they will do is purposefully extend a conversation with gibberish just to justify billing you; or instead of sending you one detailed email, they will send you several short email messages and bill you for each. It is imperative that you set the boundaries of expectations when it comes to communication. Doing so will save you a lot of money. 3) Divorces aren’t cheap and this law firm will remind you that with the number of times the retainer is refreshed. My divorce didn’t even go to trail, but in all it costed me north of $20k. Keep in mind that when you do your “free” consultation they will give you an arbitrary retainer fee of what it cost to go to mediation and what that retainer will be should it go to trail. Expect that cost to be substantially higher when it’s all said and done. It is imperative that you scrutinize the summary of charges. You will see things like “team meetings”, document review, etc. Which brings me to my final point. 4) You must be proactive during your divorce process. My divorce was finalized in April of 2024. I would have never known that unless I reached out to the law firm for a status in which they immediately sent me a copy of my signed decree. I do find it strange at the fast turnaround of response, yet I was still being billed for “team meetings” etc. I speculate they were trying to reduce as much of my retainer as possible prior to closing my file….but that’s just a speculation. In all, these key points aren’t a knock against Siemon Law Firm, but just lessons learned from my point of view. Jordan Edwards did a remarkable job in ensuring I retained the house, 100% of my military pension, and minimum payout to my ex-wife. I would most definitely recommend this law firm. Best of luck with your journey.

Steven answered my call right away and met with us regarding a case he qualified as hard to prove. He was candid about the length of time, the cost and the odds of a successful outcome. It was a long process taking over a year and the outcome was costly, but as he had predicted in a best case scenario. He worked well with the opposing attorneys which helped our settlement and the judge also liked his demeanor and attitude in court. I would recommend him as a litigator.

One of the best decisions I’ve ever made was hiring Erin for a custody and support claim/counterclaim. I had a very complicated case and Erin and staff genuinely cared and went way above and beyond my expectations for representation. Without Erin I would have been in a huge mess and am extremely thankful to say the least. I’ve used several attorneys in the past and none of them even come close to her knowledge, organization, compassion and value. If you are seeking someone to represent you, Erin and her practice are by far the best attorneys at a tremendous value. I’d give her more stars if I could and am extremely grateful for her taking my case and getting the results. If you need a attorney, Erin is by far the best available and is extremely honest and upfront about everything.

Mr. John Rife is a lawyer I would recommend to anyone and everyone. He helped me get out of a really tough situation with the best possible outcome, in compliance with the law, and while taking the 'scary' out of needing a lawyer and being involved with the court system. He talked to me like a human being, and made sure that I understood legal terminology put into plain English, and always along the way never put me into a position where I was uncomfortable or disagreed with the way he was proceeding with my case. He told me everything I'd need to do to get my case handled directly and smoothly, and gave me the chance to be proactive which really helped me out. Your not just another dollar sign to this guy- and that's rare to find in lawyers.

John Rife provided excellent representation for my son who was arrested twice on drug offenses; one arrest occurring while he was out on bail for the first arrest. While my son was required to serve two months jail time while he was awaiting his court dates, Mr. Rife was able to get him probation, drug counseling, and community service with no additional jail/prison time to serve. I believe Mr. Rife's established rapport with law enforcement/judicial officials in Cobb County helped in my son's case. He was also very responsive to me and my husband and my son throughout the process, despite the fact that he was very busy with other cases. I would definitely recommend Mr. Rife if you are in need of an experienced criminal attorney in Cobb County.

I can’t recommend Renee Welch highly enough! If you’re looking for an attorney who combines deep expertise with genuine care for her clients, Renee is absolutely the one to turn to. She focuses her practice on estate planning, probate administration, corporate law, and real estate law, and she’s a powerhouse in all these areas. What truly sets her apart, though, is the way she makes you feel like you're more than just a client—she treats you like a close friend. Renee goes above and beyond in every way, always taking the time to fully understand your needs and provide clear, thoughtful advice. Her knowledge and skill set exceed expectations, and she is a true expert in her field. I recently sent a dear friend to Renee who was overwhelmed and stressed about handling matters after the passing of her mother. Renee not only handled everything with professionalism but also with such kindness and compassion. She alleviated my friend’s anxiety and guided her through a very difficult time with empathy and care. The entire Boling Rice firm is outstanding and Renee Welch truly stands out as an exceptional attorney. If you need help with estate planning, probate, or any legal matters, do yourself a favor and reach out to Renee—she’s an absolute gem!

Stuart Oberman is one of the most logical and caring attorneys I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He guided us in the right decisions and definitely looked out for our best interests, even before his own. Thanks Stuart - hopefully we won't have to work together again, but if we find ourselves in need of legal services, you are our first call!

I highly recommend Josh Bishop to anyone who is looking for a knowledgeable attorney for a transaction with a dental DSO. Josh is one of the best attorney I ever worked with. From our first meeting, he explained everything to me in terms I could easily understand and was always very responsive when I had questions. Josh and his team always got back to me quickly and made it seamless operation, especially as we were facing time constraints. Thanks, team!

Mr. Moore was helping me in a custody case. Without notice or reason he stopped returning my calls, emails or texts. He stopped working on my case all together! Very disappointed. He works under the umbrella of Van Sant Law firm. This makes Van Sant look poorly as well.

Christopher Moore is a great man and an excellent attorney. I truly believe that he is an old soul with morals and family values . I cannot stress enough what a great job he has done for me not only as far as resolving my case but also keeping me informed the whole way. I am fortunate that I made the decision to hire him and have him at my side through this entire issue. He kept me well informed and was not intimidated by the opposing party in any manner what so ever. He used his professional demeanor and experience to resolve this issue. He was very reasonably priced and worth every penny as he did not bill me for short emails, or text, etc. I truly believe this man is a god send to his clients. Thank you Christopher for your support and results You have one client for life, and that is me. Jon

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
