Liz Kelly and her paralegal, Jessica, are an amazing team. They helped me through a very difficult time when I needed expert legal aid. Liz was well versed in both the law and the processes required in Chester County. Liz and Jessica walked me through all my options, helped me make important decisions and were extremely responsive throughout the entire process. I highly recommend Kelly Family Law.

I loved working with Liz and her team on my divorce! When I started out, I really dreaded all of the pity and somber tones I expected from everyone. However, Liz and Jessica were upbeat, positive and friendly, which made the process much better. The whole thing just felt like an inconvenience in my life that they were taking care of for me. I trusted them with the steps along the way, and to make the right recommendations for me. Liz went over the options, possible outcomes and likelihood of various outcomes. My ex and I mediated but each had representation. I felt very prepared going into mediation thanks to Liz's guidance, and walked away with a settlement that I was very happy with. Liz make best use of the hourly fee, found ways to minimize the number of times I needed to come to the office and got this process done super quickly. Highly recommended!!

I hired Liz Lubker for my child custody case couple years ago. She was good with paperwork but not with hearings. I don’t know if it is a character or experience but she didn’t speak that much during the hearing and we lost. Even though we got the partial custody all the visitation expenses and distances are on me now. Opposing counsel was much more experienced and confident. Opposing counsel talked all the way during the hearing and Liz Lubker was quiet and that’s how we lost. In my opinion, you need to speak and bring as many facts as possible during 30 minute hearing to change judge’s mind.

I was referred to Tina Weber by a long time friend. Having consulted with and met with several attorneys prior regarding a HIGH conflict custody relocation matter. Tina was the first and ONLY attorney to actually listen to me. Tina took the time to make me feel heard as she was genuinely interested in the details and specifics of my situation. She really did the work to understand the complexities of my case. Not only was Tina responsive to my calls, emails and texts, I never felt she was unavailable or too busy with other cases to really provide the attention I was looking for, which has been my experience in the past. What I loved most about working with Tina is her no nonsense approach. Tina was very matter of fact, to the point and direct which is what lead to her to being able to negotiate an agreement with my ex and avoid trial, which was ultimately the goal however never expected…I thought for sure this was going to be a battle. Tina is methodical, intelligent and clever. She was able to quickly formulate a plan of action and walked me through her professional opinions at to why, she explained everything from every possible angle. Tina managed my expectations appropriately, was honest with me about several possible outcomes and spent a considerable amount of time prepping me for trial in the event that’s where we ended up. Tina spent time role playing with me and helped me to see things differently from other perspectives and for the first time I felt confident and ready. If you are looking for someone who actually listens and cares and is able to get the job done, then you absolutely need to retain Tina’s services. Hands down the best attorney I’ve ever had in my corner, which is truly how I felt.

I retained Tina for a VERY complicated custody case in April 21' and I have been blown away with her intelligence, dedication, legal knowledge and passion to represent what is fair and true. Tina is one step ahead of foreseeable legal roadblocks at all times and I have the utmost confidence in her as my child's voice. I have never had an attorney be so effective and compassionate- (she actually checks in on us frequently just to "see how we are doing"). Prior to Tina, I had retained an attorney at a large firm and they actually dropped out of my case due to the complexity! A well respected therapist recommended Tina and she hit the case head on. Tina is systematically dismantling the opposition's main stance - she is WELL versed in dealing with narcissistic personality disorder as well which is key in certain cases like this. I have learned so much from Tina both personally and legally and it is a blessing to have her as my attorney. She is an absolute pitbull in the courtroom!

I consulted Tina on an accident that led to criminal charges being filed against me. I had never been in any trouble legally before and the situation, stress, and worry was affecting all aspects of my life, especially daily operation of my business. Tina explained every charge and scenario to me in clear, understandable terms. I saw how fiercely she represents and fights for her clients as a seasoned attorney. My consultation with Tina Weber eased my worries beyond measure due to her knowledge of the judicial process and allowed me to recapture peace of mind in order to focus on my business and get back on track. I can't say thank you enough for that result alone. Highly recommended in any situation her expertise may cover. Thank you endlessly, Tina

I switched to Liz after my 1st attorney depleted my retainer without making any progress. After that experience where I learned why some attorneys give attorneys a bad name, I found Liz to be fair and honest. She had my back. I trusted her. She didn’t inflate or fudge fees like my other one did. I was able to relax knowing my billing was fair. Liz has a level headed approach and nothing ruffles her feathers easily. Divorce outcome in my favor thanks to her guidance. Her office staff Jessica was knowledgeable & professional

Liz was amazing! She helped me, both legally and emotionally, through my incredibly long divorce process. She is very level headed and know exactly how the system works. She guided me through what I could expect, what would go through and how to proceed. Her advice was always correct. She was patient, understanding and thorough from start to finish. When it was all finished I received a fair settlement.

I was referred to Mrs. Kelly by an attorney that felt she would be the best at representing me throughout my divorce. I am not a very wealthy individual to say the least. I am pretty much your typical middle class worker struggling to get by. Mrs Kelly was very understanding and very "real". She was very honest and frank with me from the start and I truly respected that. Mrs Kelly was very flexible about all my troubles and would go out of her way to help resolve them. Throughout the divorce Mrs Kelly had multiple family and health issues occur. However she never forgot or pushed me off during difficult times. To which I truly commend her on. I'm rambling so let me cut to the chase. The end result to my divorce was everything I could have hoped. I went into things expecting the worst and walked away a truly blessed and happy man. I can't say enough kind words about Mrs Kelly and how much she has helped me in life.

Jacqueline Segal handled my difficult and long divorce (11 years) and me, a worry wart client, with care, concern, and professionalism. She calmed down my worries, talked sense to me when I was upset, worked with opposing lawyers and in the end settled my case to my advantage. While my husband went through 3 different lawyers I knew I had the best there was and completely trusted her judgment on all matters. She showed me the right steps to take and had the ability to explain the legal aspects to me so that they made sense. I would recommend Jacqueline Segal to any woman going through a difficult time and who needs a lawyer who will make sure that her case will be handled efficiently, professionally and by a caring person.

Ryan made a lot of promises to me that he could not deliver. For example, he said the case will be wrapped up in 3 months. It didn’t. It took 9 months and with loose ends. He promised he’d call me the next day. He didn’t. Not the next day or the next. He promised to send me a document. He didn’t. I’d ask again. Again he promised to send it. He didn’t. It’s a repeat pattern throughout the case. I found him to be negligent with the case, even incompetent.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
