I will admit that I had a few beers. I didn't know what to do but I spoke to my brother and he recommended this place. I spoke with Glen Wietzel . I really felt like he gave a crap so when he told me that I should fight it, I did. After a few months later, the prosecutors dropped the case and it was dismissed. I am no longer required to go to probation, to all stupid driver improvement classes, have a deep lung device, have 30 months of surcharges, and no community service. HELL YEAH!!!. So relieved. Give them a try. I'm glad I did.

I went to a family law firm when my ex filed for divorce back in 2012. I was originally assigned one attorney by this firm, but i kept getting put off and rescheduled. Then Holly called me and scheduled a meeting. I found out that the original attorney had left the firm and she'd been assigned. Turned out to be the best thing to happen. My soon to be ex husband made the divorce process extremely difficult and drawn out by representing himself. Holly put up with a lot of abuse from him and high number of motions filed by him over the span of about 2 years. Holly made me feel safe and secure. I had no doubts about her abilities and no worries that i was going to get left in the lurch. I didn't feel like a task on her list of clients to see to. I felt like a person. I felt like I mattered.

Holly Monk is a beloved name in our house. In 2013 my husband and I were desperate to have legal intervention to preserve the emotional wellbeing and safety of our grandson. Before his mother's sudden death in 2012, he and his mom, our daughter, had spent 19 of the 25 months of his life mostly living with us. After her death, our grandson naturally became his biological father's responsibility. However, due to his irresponsibility, our grandson was having to be jostled about between his father 1 or 2 days, his mom's best friend 1 to 2 days and us the other 2 to 3 days each week. This went on for a year and 4 months. Over the period of time before we hired Holly, it became known to us that our grandson was not in a safe environment. The last straw was when he decided he was going to cut us out of our grandson's life because he didn't like our concern over what was happening in their household. This is where the vast knowledge and intelligence of Holly Monk came into play. As we began calling several Attorney's offices to acquire their services, we kept getting told there was nothing they could do for us. They said that in the state of Texas there are no grandparent's rights. We tried to tell them that it wasn't just about our rights, that it was about our grandson's right to be protected as he was an innocent child! Thank God, we didn't give up after being repeatedly turned away. We found Holly. She asked a few questions and told us she felt that she might be able to help. We were beyond grateful. She knew the law in ways that, apparently, the other attorneys didn't. Holly never gave us false hope. She was very attentive and incredibily savvy. She had an uncanny insight into the type of person we were dealing with. She gave us guidance as to how to handle ourselves in order to achieve our best outcome. From the day we had our first consult she had us in court 3 and 1/2 weeks later. With the case that Holly put before the temporary judge, we were granted immediate access to our grandson for 3 out of 4 days a week pending a social study. As time passed, things that the judge had ordered to take place from both parties were not being followed through on the part of the father. Holly requested another hearing to enforce the temporary judges orders. Her strategy was extremely effective resulting in the judge placing the child with us full time. The judge ordered the father's visits to be supervised. This is virtually unheard of progress from a temporary court. In less than a year, the case was finalized in mediation. Along with our retaining full time custody, Holly required that the father meet specified conditions for one year If he wanted to have standard visitation. She also insisted on his paying at least the minimal child support. This was not required, but Holly demanded, as it was her job to get the best for us as her clients. Honestly, it is because of her unceasing dedication to knowing the law and how to present a case that we have been awarded the greatest gift. We now have our grandson full time.

I used Holly Monk for my divorce and I also know her well as a professional colleague. Holly is an excellent attorney and works tirelessly to get the best results for clients. She is also reasonable. I would advise people to pay no attention to the less than positive reviews on this site. Many times those reviews are made by people who may or may not have been clients of Holly and are used to only damage Holly's reputation and are truly no reflection of the work she has performed as an attorney. Holly personally did my divorce and she did an excellent job. Her colleagues and the judiciary think very highly of Holly. She is a wise, competent, and caring attorney.

Divorce is never a positive time in a person's life and it can effect your demeanor, health, and/or actions. It's very important to have an attorney that will advise and guide in a manner that will be in your best interest. Jared is the attorney that you want representing your needs. I want to thank you for your hard work, attentiveness, and preparation on my case. You listened to my concerns, considered my needs, and didn't make any promises that you couldn't keep. You stuck to the facts and held me accountable when my emotions got the best of me. You helped me to understand that the outcome may not be perfect but we would do our best. Your performance in the courtroom was professional yet robust. I'm happy to say that that the final orders were more than I expected and I'm elated with everything. Selecting you as my attorney was a great move and I can't say "Thank you" enough.

Jared's knowledge of the legal system literally saved me tens of thousands of dollars. Through his knowledge of state law and the local courts, he explained to me in plain language exactly where I should set my sights. I achieved my goal - and in doing this he saved me an incredible amount of money.

If I could give no stars, I would. I hired Jared for my child custody/child support case in Feb. of 2017. We had a hearing scheduled for Temporary orders that would determine my visitation with my son as well as the amount that I would pay in child support prior to the final order. After the hearing, I got no response from Jared about the temp. orders that may or may not have been in place. After nearly 2 months of waiting, I found out from my sons Mother that the Temporary orders were in fact signed and in her possession (over a month after they were signed). I hired new council and later found out that two things did not happen. 1) Jared did not show up for the motion to sign hearing that was scheduled in Mid July. This left me behind in my child support because I was not notified that my support had nearly doubled. 2) Jared did not provide opposing council with the financials that were gathered during Discovery. I am assuming that without the numbers that I provided, opposing council could basically estimate my income. We had an opportunity to contest the amounts if Jared would have attended the hearing to sign. I am blown away that this man is able to practice family law at all. He did not care about my needs whatsoever. Basically, he charged me a boat load of money and did not show up to court. The other two reviews on here make perfect sense. Do not hire Jared. he is awful in every way.

I hired Mr. Tinsley to represent me in a divorce . He kept telling me he was board certified in family law and an expert in family law. His retainer fee was pretty high but I paid it b/c he convinced me could get me what I wanted. After I payed him the money it was a total different game. He would not return my phone calls, wasn't prepared when we went to court, a terrible nightmare!!!! I soon learned that he never comes to his office before 2:00, apparently too hung over from the night before. I got taken advantage of and lost everything. Stay away from this atty!!!! He is a mess.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
