My wife and I retained the services of MIles Mason’s Group recently for child support and parenting plan issues. We were very happy with the services that MMFLG provided. We were represented by Morgan Stanford who handled every step of our case, and Miles Mason provided his valuable insight and advice at every crucial point. Both Morgan and Miles listened to our concerns and took the time to understand our family dynamics. We couldn’t have been more happy with their services and the results.

He has a great understanding of the law and process in divorce and child support process. He and his staff worked with me and my case in a way that exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend them and will use them again.

My husband and I worked with Stephanie to establish our will. Stephanie turned what was unfamiliar territory, into a virtually seamless process. She was quick to respond to our questions with detailed consultation. Stephanie was a pleasure to work with because she is a thorough and knowledgeable attorney. We would highly recommend her for your legal needs.

I was referred to Mr. Britt by another law firm for his expertise regarding probate and property law. Mr. Britt spent considerable time discussing my situation, the legal process surrounding it and the probable outcome and made suggestions regarding my course of action. He told me that he could certainly represent me in court but said that in all honesty I did not need this because I had no legal rights in the matter. In essence, he was saying that it would not be a wise use of money to hire him since in all likelihood, it would not make a difference in the outcome in this case. I brought up many points and angles for which I sought clarification and Mr. Britt was knowledgeable and experienced in all areas. He was certainly professional and demonstrated legal expertise but at the same time, he was patient and fully present as he listened to me and addressed my concerns. The fact that he treated me with consideration and kindness and told me the truth--that I really did not need his representation--tells me that he conducts himself personally and professionally with honesty and integrity. These character traits are very important to me and because I don't find them so prevalent in today's world, I feel fortunate and blessed to have found an attorney like Mr. Britt. I would certainly recommend him and I plan to retain his services for estate planning and preparing a will.

Chris is phenomenal! I highly recommend him. My case was probably his first divorce since he has only been practicing a year (if that). I originally had a very seasoned divorce lawyer that had given up on my case for two reasons …. My case was “screwed up” and I had run out of funds to pay him since my husband had refused to pay alimony and child support that was ordered by the Divorcee Referee over a year earlier. In a nutshell here is what Chris has done for me: Come in on an already 2 year case with boxes and boxes of evidence filled with financial information that showed marital funds being hidden in multiple businesses and taking the time to not only get familiar with everything but he also did his own investigating. Amazing! He jumped right in and started dealing with my husbands never ending harassing texts, emails and phone calls. His aggressive emails to opposing counsel put an end to the harassment which finally allowed my kids and me to have a sense of safety that we had gone two years without. Chris was incredible about getting back to me in a timely manner. Since I was receiving threatening texts and emails almost daily and at all hours of the day there were several times that I had to contact him outside of the normal business hours…this included nights and weekends and he always dealt with the situation immediately. A few miracles he pulled off…. Had a necessary out of town hostile witness served at the airport the minute they entered Tennessee. He was able to prove to the judge that marital funds had been hidden in multiple business ventures by my husband and his family members. The Judge joined the family to the case which is something I didn’t even know was possible. After 10 hours in a contempt hearing regarding harassment and nonpayment of child support and alimony my husband was cuffed in the court room and spent days at 201 Poplar. The money that the Judge set for his bail was ordered to be sent to me. The office that handles this sort of thing didn’t even have protocol for this type of situation because it just never happens. Switching lawyers terrified me. I recall having a meltdown shortly after I first hired Chris and I realized just how much of a brand new lawyer he was. I thought I had made the biggest mistake of my life and I shared this with him. He told me that what he lacked in experience, he more than made up for in life experiences that some seasoned lawyers have no clue about. He started on day one fighting for my kids and I. My only regret was that I didn’t have him from the start of my divorce.

I received personal care and attention during a particularly difficult and emotional case. I always felt like my legal team was two steps ahead of the opposition at every turn. I know this was due to hours of research and preparation. They took time to get to know us so that they knew best how to represent us, and they did that so very well. I don’t like to think about how different our outcomes would have been without all the “extra miles” they went for us.

If you are navigating a divorce, I would highly recommend contacting Thomas Family Law. I believe my divorce was more complicated than some, and I had absolutely no knowledge of any of the issues I was facing, what steps to take. I felt upside down and inside out, but everyone at the firm is very knowledgeable and compassionate in explaining the course they would take in representing me, as well as helping me understand the possible outcomes I could expect. They are dedicated and thorough in their representation of their clients and will be honest with you, which is extremely important. Having them working on my behalf put a very anxious mother at ease.

Going through a divorce or separation is one of the challenging times in life, especially when it comes to your children. Justin does good work. Even though my case was especially clustered with the other side being a member of the good ole boys system ( small town corruption ) but he did fight for me and I did end up with my child 100% Bc of the death of the other party but I truly believe Justin worked for me and made more progress than anyone else. I do recommend.

Absolutely outstanding! My experience with Megan House Wilson was nothing short of exceptional. From the very beginning, she demonstrated the utmost respect, ensuring I felt heard and valued every step of the way. Her tenacity in securing what I rightfully deserved was truly impressive; she fought for me with unwavering determination and expertise. Every time I had a question or concern, she was incredibly responsive, providing clear and timely answers that eased my worries. What truly sets her apart is her efficiency and skill—she accomplished in a few short months what my previous lawyer couldn't achieve in nearly five years. She even had to fix numerous mistakes made by my former lawyer, yet she still delivered outstanding results. Her professionalism, dedication, and competence exceeded all my expectations. My family and I are incredibly grateful for her hard work and support. I cannot recommend her highly enough for anyone seeking a compassionate, diligent, and highly effective lawyer. Thank you for turning a challenging situation into a victorious outcome!

I had the absolute worst experience with David Waldrop as my divorce attorney. IF YOU ARE A WOMAN GOING THROUGH A DIVORCE, PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS ATTORNEY. He charged me over $6,000 only to get me and my 11-year-old son kicked out of our house just three weeks before the end of the school year. First off, it took him forever to file anything, just like another review stated. When he finally did, my mom drove nine hours to come with me to court, and David called me 20 minutes before the hearing to say the courts messed up and didn’t put us on the docket. I later found out from my husband that David had actually forgotten to file anything. To make matters worse, he then charged me an additional fee to refile what he had messed up and failed to file in the first place. Meanwhile, my husband was torturing me and my son by stealing his game system, my cell phone, and locking us out of the house. David charged me for every single text and call, accomplishing absolutely nothing but getting everything taken from us. I had to fight for my husband to even let me and my son take our personal items. Free legal services reviewed everything and confirmed that I was screwed over big time. I had to quit my job and move to another state because David told me that, due to proof of my husband’s physical abuse, Judge Lundy in DeSoto County said we couldn’t stay in the same home. David told me that Judge Lundy said whoever filed for divorce was the person he was forcing to leave the marital residence. Since I was the one who was abused, I was the one who filed. I told David that didn’t make any sense—why would the judge put me and my minor child, who has no family here and catches the bus at the house, out all because I was abused and filed for divorce? He basically told me he didn’t know, the judge was crazy, and that if I didn’t agree to sign the paper, the judge would force me out and it would be more humiliating and affect future cases. David, who was friends with my husband’s attorney, pressured me into signing an agreement giving my husband the home, leaving my son and me homeless. The first document David gave me said no one was allowed to move into the home, but the second document had that part removed. When I asked about it, he dismissed my concerns and told me to sign it. Now, my husband’s new girlfriend is living in my house. David Waldrop does not care about women, especially single moms. I don’t believe the judge even said what David claimed; I think he colluded with his attorney buddy to get me out of the house. I filed for exclusive use of the home, and hiring David ruined my life. When I told him it seemed like he was working for my husband, he dropped me as a client. I still owe him $2,700, and despite begging to make payments, he sent me a demand letter to pay within five days or face court. My first divorce attorney, George in Southaven, was great and got me everything I asked for for $1,000. David Waldrop, however, has no soul and will drain you of every dollar while helping your husband. I am 38 and have never left a review before, but this experience was so horrific that I had to warn others. Avoid this attorney at all costs. PLEASE NOTICE DAVID’s response to the last single mom’s post in the picture below at the bottom. He called up one of his male clients to give him a fake review in exchange for money off his bill.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
