I came to Pete with a horrible divorce. He was honest with me, even when I didn't want to hear it and was there for me and the kids the whole way. I could not have had a better lawyer! My case was pushed away by other lawyers due to the circumstances involved, but Pete took it and was not only very involved but one of the most patient and understanding lawyers I could have ever hoped to have found. He was always there to answer questions and console me when I was frustrated or upset. Thanks to Pete, I have my kids and my life back and everything we need to start our new life!

I found Pete Armstrong strictly by accident, and it was a blessing that I did. I actually found him before I even met him, I filled out a motion on my own for reimbursement of medical expenses in the self help center at the court house, and it was actually Pete who helped me find the right forms, and without telling me what to say, guided me through filling out those forms. I never would have been able to win my motion without his help. When I went looking for an attorney, I fell upon Pete by accident. I called and left him a message, told him what I was needing and got a very prompt response. After speaking with me, he told me he could look over my file at the court and let me know his opinion on what I should do. I was grateful for any advice he would give me, and after discussing fees I decided to retain him to be my voice in order to do what needed to be done in the best interest of my children in my parenting time and child support case. Pete was on my children's side through the entire thing. I can't express how much it meant to me that he wasn't on my side, and he wasn't on my ex's side, but he was there to protect my children and do what was best for them. I have never encountered anyone like him before, no matter what I said, or expressed to him, he never judged, he was the voice that I needed to speak for me and to help me do right by my children. I have since reconciled with my ex and we are putting our family back together, and even in that Pete has been helpful, letting me know what steps needed to be taken to rectify issues outstanding with our cases in court. If you ever need an attorney, Pete is the one I would recommend for anything family related. He's not in it for the money, he's in it for the family...and that means everything to me.

Paul is knowledgeable, even tempered, considerate and fair. Paul prepared well for my ticklish case and negotiated diligently but always treated my opponent with respect. I am very pleased with the results. Not that this is the most important thing in a situation like this, but I was pleasantly surprised by the bill. Well worth Paul's assistance and expertise.

Paul was terrific. We used him to create a living trust. He helped my wife and I walk through what can seem like an intimidating process. We walked away with a sense of peace, knowing we had a plan in place for our kids if anything should happen to us. Paul took the time to explain the process, was professional, and communicated clearly. Thanks Paul!

I have to apologize in a way, that I feel so bad...that I actually started to cry so hard, from all that I thought happened at his office, that I wish I could do something for the whole office to make it up to them. I am not afraid to admit when I am wrong no matter how much I have to pay for what I caused for being wrong! The office was still continuing to keep my case in good standing while I was accusing them of losing most of my evidence. They worked very hard to try and find the evidence I claimed that I had left with them at the front desk a week and a half ago. Well? I did not leave the folders for them... I left a folder for my accountant. I ended up finding the files in a bin that was unknowingly put there by my husband! I will be personally giving the office a personal apology for all of the accusations I accused them of that they were not guilty of...Please accept my apologies...

He puts forth an effort with a passion that let's you know, he's your lawyer, but he genuinely has your best interests at heart... Admist many around him who may not show the same enthusiasm, it's not even a question as to whether or not I'd reccimend him... One couldn't ask for a better lawyer...

Judy Bregman handled my divorce and I would recommend her to anyone! She was always prepared, on time, and familiar with my case as the process played out. She was kind and polite, but switched right over to trained fighter as necessary. I watched my ex. hire a very expensive yet incompetent lawyer and then switch to a different, even more expensive lawyer who was also unprepared, late for things, and didn't seem to know our case (to my benefit, honestly). Judy's assistant, Kristin, was also outstanding, and her partner, Mr. Welch kindly lent his expert hand pertaining to a firearms matter. Divorce is a difficult life event, but Judy and her team did a wonderful job of guiding me through it with a positive outcome.

Ms. Burda was honest and dependable, always keeping my best interests at the forefront of our case. She was mindful of the amount legal fees being incurred, so she made it clear that contact was only needed when something was happening with my case. Though my divorce was considered relatively easy (no children, no debt), I believe she helped me win a fair settlement from my now ex-husband. Had I not chosen her as my lawyer, I would not have gotten nearly what I was entitled to after 23 years of marriage. I would recommend Ms. Burda to anyone needing a family lawyer. In fact, I have already done so.

Mr Sullivan represented me in a very complicated case. I had a DUI charge, Assualt charge against my ex husbands wife and a dependency case. I could not have asked for someone better or more thorough with everything I was going through. He got everything dropped down and my kids home. He is amazing. Do not hesitate to hire him.

I hired Robert based upon our initial consultation where he stated he was going to hold a court ordered recommendation from the judge and counselor in order to have more parenting time with my daughters. He charged me $3,000 at that point to represent me. On the court date we waited two hours and he never even got us in the court room. I settled my case with my ex-wife between ourselves(where her attorney agreed to draw up the order) with no need from Mr. Sullivan thankfully. He then went on to bill me an additional $1,800. As though my initial $3,000 wasn't enough for accomplishing absolutely nothing on his part . I would never recommend Mr.Sullivan to anyone that is looking to receive quality ,affordable , reliable service in this trade. Over promises and under delivers.

I hired this lawyer without doing my homework. He over charged and lied to me and actually had the nerve to lie to the judge in a hearing. I wasn't out for blood against my ex but Crooks made up a bunch of negative things right in court. He also sent a couple of my ex's clients subpoenas without telling me when all he had to do was ask for the information. Needless to say my ex lost those clients and we're all worse off because of this tool. Now I find out his entire firm is shady and known for over charging. Stay away, very far away..

Very disappointed with the unprofessional service received from Mr. Rooks. He was hired to represent two issues for a pending court hearing - one being terminating a fraudulent PPO put against me by a vindictive ex and another for health insurance coverage for my daughter. He was hired for a period of a few weeks and during that time the health insurance coverage issue was resolved without requiring his services and I was misled by him regarding the PPO being terminated. When we went to court, I sat in a room alone for hours while he communicated with my ex and his lawyer in another room and negotiated everything for the benefit of my ex. He did not get the PPO expunged stating I would have to take it to court with a jury, etc. and I get a bill for almost $5000 ! I was billed separately for the two issues that were dealt with at the same time during our two conversations by phone. We had one face-to-face visit prior to court as I lived in another state. Fees and time increment charges were overly exaggerated and falsely recorded. I feel I was misrepresented by Mr. Rooks and charged outrageous fees for services that were not rendered.

I was accused of child abuse and Doug was willing to quickly step in on a moments notice to help me fight my case. Doug worked very hard to see me through this very difficult and frightening time. He was very thorough and he never stepped away from the plate. Doug is very respectful and good at answering all of my questions in a timely fashion. Doug followed through with the entire case and even saw to my name being cleared off of any and all lists. I would recommend Doug to represent you with your case.

Even Thou Erin has been a Lawyer for 15 years, I would not recommend her. Her views on the law are very outdated, what she does know is often lost in her own personal life experience and not what the law requires. I was not happy with her service and i can't recommend her to family or friends.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
