Kevin is an amazing lawyer. Very compassionate and understanding. Going through a divorce is an extremely stressful situation to begin with and he helped alleviate some of that stress by listening to my concerns as well as explaining exactly what will happen. After the divorce he has still been accessible and responsive to any questions or concerns! Highly recommend!

I contacted Janelle and was pleasantly suprised by the quick response that she could and will help me. I was going through a rough time in my life and money was an issue, but she was more than willing to help me through it, and she did. Janelle was very sincere every time I contacted her through e-mail and phone contact. I did not feel intimidated or rushed when dealing with Janelle. She was very thoughough and followed through on all assignments. There was a point in my case that she really pulled through and helped me tremendously with my parenting plan. Being a mother herself, she beleives in equality and whats right for the children. All and all Janelle was superb and i will recommend her to anyone that needs a divorce attorney.

I needed help with my Parenting Plan and Order of Protection against my daughter's father and I found Janelle through the King County Bar Association. I had had a really bad experience with a previous lawyer and was a bit discouraged with the whole situation. Janelle was very enthusiastic and reassured me that everything was going to be ok. She jumped right into my case, eventhough it was such short notice and I couldn't have asked for better results. The outcome was everything I had hoped for and more. Janelle never gave up and kept me completely imformed about what was going on at all times. She is very personable and passionate about her job. Thanks to her, my daughter and I are now safe. I couldn't have asked for a better lawyer!

I am a new landlord and had a very nasty tenant dispute issue at the end of February this year, I have consulted with Janelle and her experience and quick instructions have impressed me to continue working with her until the dispute was successfully resolved. Janelle has demonstrated her solid experience, responsive attitude and good negotiating skills in communicating and negotiating with the tenant, who end up paid rent to the date when new tenant moved in. Besides the case itself, Janelle cares about her client by reviewing and revising our rental lease agreement to make it more protective for potential conflict between landlord and tenants, and she also provided very important suggestions and many practical tactics in handling problems in rental business. I have gained confidence by working with Janelle, and as a landlord I strongly recommend her to others who are seeking professional help regarding tenant and landlord issues.

I hired Mary in 2012, post dissolution, after my ex mounted another legal attack against our family. Mary is direct, honest, well-respected, most knowledgeable, articulate, skillful, and most capable. Despite Mary’s years of experience and exceptional legal ability, Mary’s fees are at least 100 dollars/hour less than her peers (even at 100 dollars/hour less, Mary’s hourly fee is still approximately the amount an average citizen makes in an entire day). Mary helped defend against my ex’s frivolous motions, uphold our family’s protection orders (while the criminal no contact orders remained in place), and helped our family finalize a parenting plan with domestic violence restrictions without going to trial. We finalized the night before trial and agreed to arbitrate subsequently two sections of the parenting plan. I attribute this in large part to Mary’s tenacity, knowledge of the law, and integrity, which is in direct contrast to the opposing counsel’s character and modus operandi. Due to the years of abuse endured by our family (including but not limited to financial abuse), I was eventually forced to file bankruptcy. I remain in contact with Mary post-bankruptcy (and remain committed to compensating Mary, in full with interest). In 2015, when I was forced to hire another attorney to defend against another legal attack against our family, Mary happened to be in court with another client the day of our initial hearing. Mary was overheard responding to my ex’s attorney in the hallway (in an attempt by opposing counsel to prove that I was lying in my documents submitted in response to their deceitful, unreasonable motion) if it was true that I was compensating Mary for her legal representation post-bankruptcy. Mary’s immediate and honorable response was “yes; she is”. At this point, due to lack of financial means, I no longer have the ability to retain an attorney. I continue, unrepresented (with legal consulting when available), to defend against the domestic abuse our family is forced to continue to endure. I am forever grateful to Mary, and most highly recommend Mary to anyone who needs a most competent and knowledgeable legal advocate. I know that "standing up to the bully" is critical (and is the intent of our founding Fathers in our Constitution) to defending against and stopping abusive use of conflict once and for all for ALL, not just the privileged. Our current system provides this right only for the privileged. This needs to change.

I hired Lisa for what I expected to be an easy, amicable divorce, based on a recommendation from a friend. As often happens, this quickly changed under the stress of trying to sort out our new lives apart. We were lucky in that we didn’t have children involved in the process, but we did have assets that were difficult to divide based on the legal system’s definition of fair. I met with one other lawyer and quickly saw the difference between a Litigator “let’s go to court” lawyer and a Collaborative lawyer who works cooperatively and gives you the best chance to keep things on a civil basis. Lisa is the latter. She works well with other lawyers (my husband had 3 by the time we were done) and mediators. She is respectful of both sides. Her low-key approach helps to keep things from escalating, making it easier to keep everyone focused and on track. It’s an emotional process and it can be tricky to do that. It may appear that she isn’t responding to something that you’re pointing out, but I found later that she had tucked things away in case we did have to go to court. She is a realist and understands the cost/benefit of going that route in dollar, emotional and privacy costs. Settling is better and that’s her focus. I found her very easy to work with. We did maybe 85% of our correspondence via email, so I could do it on my time and give what I wanted to say some thought before hitting “send”. She responded within 24 work day hours. Email keeps costs down - it takes less time than a phone call or office visit and it provides good documentation. But when I thought I needed to see her, I was able to get in quickly. She has a very good support team, and works with a great forensic accountant who helped me keep a good portion of investments that I had earned prior to the marriage that had been muddied over time and had to be untangled. He also helped sort out appropriate sharing of appreciation on the house that I owned prior to marriage. Lisa is tough and tenacious. She continued to work for settlement long after I had given up hope that we could accomplish that. She made me aware of the potential that the court could award so that I could make an informed decision on what made sense for settlement. We were able to agree to terms that the court would not necessarily have given, which could have cost even more in taxes on liquidated investments. My advice to you would be this. You’re paying someone for their training and expertise. Help them to help you as much as you can. Do what they suggest, complete your paperwork as quickly as possible, be your own advocate, and stay focused on getting through it. (“If you’re going through hell, keep going”, Winston Churchill). It does end, it does get better, and then you can get on with your new life.

I hired Lisa because her price was reasonable and she seemed nice but I was disappointed while going thru the divorce process. She was very passive and was not a good defender. I brought up stuff to her that she could have used in my case to get what I want but she didn't do anything about it. I would say if you need help filing papers and that sort of thing, she is good but don't hire her if you want to win your fight.

I hired Adam Prossin for legal representation in two related family law cases. However, my experience with Mr. Prossin has been highly disappointing and frustrating. Firstly, despite agreeing to handle both cases simultaneously, Mr. Prossin failed to fulfill his obligations regarding one of the cases. While he successfully handled one aspect, his overall handling of the matter was unsatisfactory. He consistently showed disorganization and lack of preparedness, often criticizing my submissions without constructive feedback or adequate guidance. Furthermore, Mr. Prossin's communication was severely lacking. He frequently ignored my messages and emails, showing disregard for my concerns and the urgency of the situation. Despite repeated attempts to reach out, he remained unresponsive, demonstrating a lack of professionalism and commitment to my case. Moreover, when I attempted to discuss the other case, Mr. Prossin brushed off my inquiries and displayed rudeness and dismissiveness. His demeanor was consistently unprofessional and disrespectful, leaving me feeling unsupported and frustrated. It has been a year, and he refuses to refund me the $6000 for the case he is refusing to represent me on. He is unresponsive to my requests. I have reached out several times to settle the matter, but at this point, he has taken payment and refused services and a refund. Overall, my experience with Adam Prossin has been deeply disappointing. His failure to fulfill his duties, lack of communication, and unprofessional behavior have resulted in a complete loss of trust and confidence in his legal representation. I would strongly advise against seeking his services.

I hired Craig Elkins for a very difficult parenting plan modification case. He has been right by my side every step of the way. I had some problems with my exhusband involving my oldest daughter over the weekend and Craig never left my side. He never took more than 5 minutes to get back to me even though it was a Saturday. My case involves severe parental alienation. It has been very emotional and trying for myself and my children. Craig has been compassionate, understanding, and extremely knowledgeable about the law and my rights as a parent. Since hiring Craig I now have my oldest daughter back at home and am confident he will do whatever is necessary to protect my other childrens best interests as well as my own. On top of everything his fees for service are incredibly reasonable. I couldn't be happier with my choice.

I have used Craig Elkins twice for family law cases, pretty much back to back. It was one of the most stressful times of my life. As a single mom, my main concern is to provide for and protect my kids. Craig fought for me, but most importantly, fought for my kids. I couldn't be more thankful for his caring, and aggressive representation. He responded to any questions I had right away; always within 24 hours. Both of my cases were a bit complex. Mr. Elkins did his research in depth, and explained my options to me in detail. I never felt rushed or taken advantage of ( like I had in the past with another attorney). I can tell you, having an attorney like Craig takes away a lot of anxiety and stress! In both cases, I had favorable outcomes, and I couldn't have achieved that without Craig's help. I would recommend him to anyone who wants an attentive, sharp, and thorough attorney.

I contacted Craig Elkins and asked him if he would help me to prepare a letter for my clients; a young couple with a baby on the way and a toddler that were in a sick, mold infested apartment. Mr. Elkins took the project on himself and would not accept payment for his work. He did a great job asking me to gather special evidence and got everything completed within the timeline that we needed. My clients were released from their lease with no hassle from the property management company. He was very compassionate, kind, helpful, generous, thoughtful and a great attorney!

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
