I hired attorney Matt Frank to change custody placement along with another more delicate matter. Matt was an excellent attorney and I highly recommend him for any family matters. He works diligently and is extremely knowledgeable. Matt made sure that I understood anything that the judge was requesting and answered any questions during the entire process. He was also punctual and always met all deadlines that were required. Matt always communicated in a timely fashion. Thank you Matt!

I have never had a lawyer up until recently and was always uneasy about having one. After meeting with her just once for 15 minutes, my feelings about having a lawyer quickly changed. She got straight to the point, and told me how things were going to be. I appreciated that because I don't like it when people sugar coat or try and tell you things they think you want to hear. Through every step of the process, she was always answering my questions, and in contact with me, whether it was her or her assistant. She helped out so incredibly much and I know because of her, things got settled and taken care of. If you hire Sara, you won't be disappointed. I know I wasn't.

Sara is an excellent lawyer. She kept me informed and kept my best interest in mind when dealing with my case. She was prompt in communications with me and dealt with communication requests through face to face contact, as well as technologically through email. So, we were always in touch and making forward progress. I always felt, whether it was in meetings or in communication, she kept my financial limitations in mind while still providing great service and a great work product. I would highly recommend Sara to anyone, including family and friends.

Sara was great at working with my husband's lawyer and both looking out for their clients in a collaborative way. She let me know what next steps were and made sure that financially and mentally I was prepared for what was ahead. I had some odd things with my divorce that in the end turned out positive for me even though I ended up paying. Because Sara had my best interests in mind my pay structure is time limited and set. I also have tax implications that are positive for me.

Michael helped me with a very ugly divorce. He always advised me my possible legal expenses for desired outcomes and did not just accept my money to pursue what was not in my best interest in the long run. Seeing the mistakes, lack of attention and overall incompetence of my former spouse's various attorneys really highlighted for me what a gem Michael is in his profession.

Attorney Haakenson was appointed during my post-divorce custody battle. He was a bit closed off initially, but I believe this is because my ex was making unfounded allegations of bias and favoritism against the previous guardian ad litem; I think that Attorney Haakenson was protecting himself and the case against any unnecessary appeals and further litigation. Attorney Haakenson completed an extensive, thorough investigation and report on our children. He was extremely fair, stated the facts clearly and concisely, and cited law and logic as the reasons for his recommendations. If I needed a personal family law attorney, I would absolutely hire him in a heartbeat.

Karen was amazing to work with! I hired her while I was facing my first OWI. She took the time to thoroughly explain everything to me every step of the way. She reassured me when I got nervous and made sure that I was always aware of all my options. Karen was very honest about what she could and couldn't do with my case. She definitely knows what she is talking about and is very skilled in OWI cases. I couldn't have asked for a better attorney or outcome for my case!

Karyn is a great attorney. I could not have asked for a better lawyer than her! I hired her in 2017 when I was facing my fourth DUI. For three years she has fought endlessly for me and has managed to take mycase down to a first offense. Anytime I had questions she was very responsive. Had I gone with a different lawyer I do not think I would have seen the same results.

After looking at these reviews I would have to say the only negative review I read was spot on with my experience hiring Karyn. I hired her in 2012 for a 3rd dui. The case went to jury trial and throughout the waiting period from court date to court date it was nearly impossible to get into contact with her. At court appearances she was unprepared and looked as though she had rolled out of bed. For the amount of money that was paid I feel representing myself would have been a much better option.

Unfortunately, I've had a few run-in's with DUI/DWI in Wisconsin. I was referred to David through a friend who also worked with him for a drunk driving ticket. David was incredibly knowledgeable on how the process works in Wisconsin and you could tell he had a lot of experience helping others before me. I was able to get a significant amount of reductions both financially and to my driving record that allowed me to maintain an active license. I would definitely recommend reaching out if you got a DUI.

David helped me with a personal injury case roughly a year ago. I was extremely concerned about finding a lawyer who had the knowledge to protect me rights after my accident (personal), along with billing that would fit inline with my budget. David was a perfect choice at the end of the day as he was able to get me the money I deserved while not asking for half in return. I also really appreciated his communication and trust-worthiness.

The good -My drug charge was dropped as he worked with the DA. -Price was average amongst Janesville lawyers for my DUI case. -Talks to you like a human and his office is far from impressive like high end lawyers who want your money.

Josh Grube was my attorney on a 2nd OWI. He is caring, down to earth and not judgemental. He was able to negotiate a miracle on my behalf. I was also taking some proactive measures as well. I do have a felony background, and even with that Josh was able to negotiate my sentence to the minimum. He was always very available. I never had to wait days for a reply. I am very late writing this review, as my divorce was a few years ago, but I wish I had never hired Ms. Arreazola. I was served with contempt papers because my spouse's lawyer had sent messages to the Arreazola office about things wanted out of the house belonging to spouse. I was NEVER notified. I found out after I fired her and picked up all correspondence pertaining to the proceedings. I called her very upset one day when my spouse was banging on the door and wouldn't leave and she never called me back. I was stuck with bills that should have been split between my spouse and me, but she never did anything with the paperwork I provided showing the amounts and what they were for and it was over $3,000 dollars. She did very little for the retainer paid, and I had to pay the same retainer to the next attorney. Would have saved me a lot to have chosen this attorney the first time instead of Patricia Arreazola.

This was the best thing I could have ever done by hiring such an excellent and compassionate attorney to deal with my ongoing divorce challenges. My initial attorney was not so good, to put it lightly. So I have had to go back and have adjustments made to do with contempt motions and child custody. I can’t say enough about the people at Arrezola Law. They took this on, corrected the issues I thought were completely hopeless in my divorce, and made the outcome for my children and myself much happier. They thoroughly explained everything to me and treated me with kindness and compassion throughout the whole process. I wish I had hired them at the beginning, because I feel these challenges would have never have come up. I can’t thank them enough. Well worth every penny!!!!

I would absolutely not recommend this lawyer to represent you! When we were figuring out child support from my ex to me she let the other lawyer tell her what the dollar amount was going to be and it wasn't the right amount for the percentage that your spouse is required to pay for two kids. The whole time in court I was telling her that was wrong and she didn't say anything until we left the court room and then said that we could come back to that. While they were doing the calculations they never took into consideration ALL of my ex's income and my lawyer never stuck up for me telling my ex's lawyer that it wasn't right and that we didn't use ALL of his income, she let my ex and his lawyer walk all over me! At the end she never even looked at his assets to have them split with me so I got nothing, signed off on the house and I got nothing! I have never been through this before so I needed the help of an expert and she was by far NOT an expert! On top of the fact that it costed me $2,000 retainer fee and then when everything was said and done another $800.00 so all together $2800 and I ended with not a fair amount in child support and nothing else!! My divorce was finalized on Jan 5, 2015 and I didn't know that the "divorce decree" that I got sent to me from Teresa's office wasn't my finalized divorce decree until now, when I reached out to my lawyer to see if she could give me a copy, she didn't even one! She had to send an email to my ex's lawyer to send her a copy of it! Terrible, terrible! I would have expected that my lawyer would have been on top of getting all of this stuff for me considering I have no idea what I'm looking for and she did! Now, I am waiting on this divorce decree so I can provide it to my bank so I can get approved for a mortgage to better myself and my kids and I have to wait until it is convenient for my ex's lawyer to send it! Very Very Very Very disappointed

Lynn communicates well, responding to emails promptly, for the most part. My biggest complaint, she was well aware of past violence. During my divorce, my soon to be ex was constantly tormenting me, covering cameras, banging on my door around 2am, playing music at early hours after drinking at a bar, used my tooth brush to clean the shower. This exasperated my mental health issues. I begged Lynn to get him out. But she didnt. It wasnt until he locked me out that Lynn address the issue with opposing counsel. "High conflict" divorced pay well. I fired her.

I had been warned by other attorneys about hiring Lynn's firm because their billing is consistently so exorbitant, but despite the warnings I contacted Lynn for help on a very specific child custody issue because I was willing to pay for an attorney that could get things done. I met with her twice and paid her a very substantial advance fee for the filing of the required motion and legal representation at the subsequent hearing. She never filed the motion or did any of the legal work that I paid the advance fee for, but she charged me $1,000, after the fact, for those "consultations". Be wary of writing her a check for advance fees - she'll deplete those funds with unreasonable billings before she even begins to work your case.

I was told by Attorney Holly Jensen, in our fist consultation that she would be on my side and would be a strong voice to help me. In that fist consultation also, attorney Jensen stated she was going to help me get my time with my daughter because that’s what I was entitled to. But at a sad, frightening, and frustrating moment just before we were to finish my case in a court of law after 9mo. (my personal emotions in overdrive) Attorney Jensen backed out on me, and stated “she was done wanting to help on the case anymore” and said “I was changing my mind too much”. I felt that I had a right to somehow sometimes change my mind, contrary to what she kept telling me. She was not understanding of my positions, ideas or questions even when I explained myself in great detail in emails or phone calls. When I did write an email on a Saturday asking questions and wanting to know anything it would take days into the next week to get an answer from Attorney Jensen would respond with a few short words. (Felt I was bothering her more than her reaching out to really help me) She takes a lot of time off at a moments notice without any word on your case status. She is easily intimidated by the opposite side especially if it is a male. Attorney Jensen will not reach out to you on her own most times to give you updates. By Friday afternoon (12pm she’s has left for the weekend) and you’re left with the thought of “how is my case progressing”? If your case is in depth and requires her to be on top of the situation she does not posses these skill sets. If you have a case the requires her to interact with other people in anyway, (the opposing attorneys) or in a court of law setting, I wouldn’t recommend Attorney Holly Jensen she again is intimidated and keeps quiet.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
