We used Marleen for child custody. She was great the case drug on for over a year due to COVID and a non responsive parent, but Marlene was always available for questions. She was very calm and matter of fact, which always reduced our stress since we were in another state. She is very knowledgeable and experienced. I would highly recommend.

This review is about five years overdue but Marlene deserves the credit. When my (then) husband unexpectedly asked for a divorce, he took everything out of our shared account and hired a lawyer instead of going through the military. Marlene worked with me on fees for what I could afford and did an amazing job representing me! She was incredibly thorough and kept up with fighting accusations from the other lawyer with proof they were false. The divorce ended in my favor without having to meet with my husband or go to court. I highly recommend Marlene Keen.

I only spoke to Marlene on the phone but she gave me more time and suggestions than any of the other attorneys I called. She was knowledgeable, friendly and very helpful. I could tell many of the people I spoke to were giving me advice based on their own gains. I am going to use her when I am ready and I will add to this review.

My two sons were subjected to emotional and physical abuse by their mother and her boyfriend while living with them in California. I live in Chicago and had one son who stayed to live with me. For 1.5 years I was unable to contact nor visit with the second son who remained with his mother in California. Mattis Law drafted a perfect filing for our case presentation, including statements written and executed by my wife's father, step mother and sister which resulted in my Illinois son continuing to reside with me and a court ordered visitation for the son living in California. Amelia Mattis is organized, intelligent, poised and calm even when opposing counsel's behavior was obnoxious. Her suggestions to me for preparation of the court ordered mediation were perfect and kept me from falling into the traps being set by my ex-spouse. The office staff of Cassidy and Cheyenne were superb and I truly felt that we were a team united for the same goal. Mattis Law was the last of four law firms I interviewed for this important work. I wish I had found them first. They are brilliant, organized and stay on task by not participating in petty details. Look for Mattis Law on the list of California's Best Attorneys for many decades to come for they truly deserve this designation. Bravo!

Amelia is walks into court cute as a button, but every word out of her mouth is so precise, factual, and loaded with information. When she speaks, she does it in a way that settles all the dust and allows her verbal argument and points to be not only heard but received. She is smart as a whip, knows her stuff like the back of her hand, will work with you to get what you want but won’t lead you astray if she doesn’t think it’s doable. She’s compassionate, professional, and will absolutely work wonders for you. Highly recommend! Unlike a lot of attorneys, she will advocate hard for you and your children, but without bringing the drama, antagonism and inflammatory/smear campaign into the mix. Her office staff is wonderful too. Cassidy has been so helpful in getting communications to and from myself and anyone else who needs to be looped in. So, so thankful for Mattis Law. This is the first time in my 4 year custody case that I’ve felt like I was in good hands and feel some sort of comfort.

I haven't yet had the pleasure of working with Attorney Roland, but our initial conversation left an indelible mark. In a stressful and high-stakes situation, Roland's empathetic and approachable demeanor provided much-needed comfort. Unlike other attorneys I've contacted, he took the time to listen and understand my concerns without rushing or demanding a consultation fee. His willingness to engage and offer guidance, even before formally retaining his services, demonstrates a rare blend of professionalism and humanity. I feel confident placing my trust in Attorney Roland and look forward to working with him. If you're seeking an attorney who truly cares about his clients, look no further.

I hired Blanchard, Krasner & French after my financial planner insisted I consult an attorney regarding the questionable actions of a trustee. A firm in Denver where I live recommended BKF because my trust is based in California. Several months and several thousand dollars later, an investments professional refused to work with me unless I hired an attorney. I told him I DID hire an attorney. "What did they DO?" asked the adviser. I wasn't able to answer. Now I am in the position of deciding whether to pay BKF even more for who knows what. Granted I am a bit naive about working with attorneys. But from where I sit, I've invested a large sum of money and have seen no results.

Mark Krasner’s reputation is second to none. He consistently receives well-deserved awards and recognition for his achievements, as recommended by peers and clients alike. As an attorney and CPA, he has a depth and breadth of knowledge few attorneys are fortunate to possess. Mark prepared our family trust for us when we moved to the area, and we have relied on him ever since. Mark is extremely competent and meticulous in every detail he handles. The Warfield firm was helpful, insightful, agile and quick to bring many trust documents into focus and final preparations for timely filing. A previous family trust needed astute updating along with real estate deeds. There was a pleasant caring element to each conversation which was highly appreciated. Integrity is major part of every good law practice and that element is at Alexandra Warfield's La Jolla office. This was a good experience. Highly recommended.

I retained Warfield from a referral from a family attorney. At first, everything seemed fine, but when it came to the actual representation at the hearing, she didn't do any of the tactics she said she would prior to the hearing - she just shuffled through her papers and that was it. She also shorted me by $800 on my first invoice, transposed numbers on the 2nd invoice, and then played numbers games on the 3rd invoice to try to cover up things and spend up what retainer I had left and more. She even charged me for an item she listed as "No Charge!" All in all, a very shady experience for me. Maybe you'll have better luck.

Alexandra was very pleasant to work with. I appreciated the full-service of this firm. The attorney’s provided in-house notarization of my health care documents, and made the process virtually painless. They catered to me - per my request, we did much of the transaction remotely and I only needed to be present for the actual signing of my documents. This meant I only needed one meeting because they were so accommodating to my busy schedule, which I genuinely appreciate.

The very best thing that happened in my case was finding Mr. Erik Jenkins and his team at Jenkins Law Firm APC. Mr. Jenkins’ knowledge base and abilities are bar none. He demonstrates this at court and in every interaction you share with him. Mr. Jenkins presence alone speaks volumes when you meet with him. He listens, retains what you share with him, and then feeds back concise powerful wisdom and legal facts with certainty and sincerity. As a result, after each time I speak with him, I have clarity, I learn something new, and walk away with confidence about the path we’re on. Before I found Mr. Jenkins, I’d been through two terrible experiences with previous Attorneys. Both of those lackluster experiences left me in a situation that was dire and in a state of disarray. Mr. Jenkins immediately grasped the injustice I was facing and with fervor he told me he knew he could turn things around and win. Mr. Jenkins made me feel like I was part of his family under his wing of protection and that meant everything to me. I knew I was no longer alone, and I knew someone who was strong was there to help. He is one of the special legal professionals who can prognosticate and deliver an outcome, and the reason he’s able to do that is because he’s a skilled, heavily experienced, knowledgeable, and dedicated legal tactician. Following that initial meeting, he and his team began working aggressively to undo the damage caused by the previous two law firms and to set myself and our children on the course for justice. Erik’s Associate Attorney Ms. April Hu committed herself to my case right away and fought for my children and I against a very difficult and contentious opposing counsel. She didn’t back down and stood toe to toe against them, as they repeatedly launched one parental alienating attack after the next at me and my children. She led and won impactful Court Hearings for me, wrote strong legal pleadings, and got things prepared for an important case-impacting Trial. Going through this difficult experience was a lot easier on me because of Ms. Hu’s help and care. I am grateful for her dedication. Ms. Danielle Lawson is Mr. Jenkins’ skilled and powerful Paralegal. She is knowledgeable, caring, and dedicated. Danielle cared deeply about the injustice happening to my children and I and dedicated herself to exposing the lies and harm that had been created. She brings many years of legal knowledge (even more than some Attorneys have) and a fighting spirit to her work. Danielle was always there for me whenever I needed an answer or to clarify things. She also brings a special personable touch that makes interacting with her welcoming and smooth. Danielle is wonderful! Ronnie Baier was the very first person I spoke with at Jenkins Law Firm. Ronnie is easy to speak with. I can’t say enough about that trait, because when you are a client facing incredibly stressful circumstances, such as a high-conflict divorce with extremely high conflict personalities, it means a lot to speak with someone who is personable and makes communication light and easy. After I explained my situation to Ronnie, he spoke with confidence about Mr. Jenkins and Jenkins Law Firm’s ability to help me. Ronnie is another great part of the Jenkins Team. Mamie and Yvonne are also amazing. They are kind and caring people who are there to help you with whatever you need at any time. Thank you Mamie and Yvonne!! Overall, I cannot speak enough accolades about Mr. Jenkins and his entire team who are caring, sincere, dedicated and learned professionals who Win for you! Their work and success on my case has made all the difference, and at present they are still helping me to achieve additional justice for my children and I. Having Mr. Jenkins and his team as part of your family of defense and protection will be the best thing that can happen for you and your family’s future. Trust me, because I’ve experienced it.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
