We in the past used Lee Thompson for advice and to prepare our wills. We found him advising us honestly and professionally. Also recently consulted him on a matter and he was very helpful. We would recommend Lee for legal matters hands down.

I was having an issue with a 34 yr old paternity case and Mr. Thompson explained very thorough the pluses and minuses of moving further with this case, his advice (for free mind you) really opened up my eyes on the true nature of this situation. Mr. Thompson really knows and showed me he has much knowledge of Family Law and if another situation ever arises involving the need for attorney I would hire Mr. Thompson in a minute.

Aaron Conrad was highly recommended to us in a desperate, frightening and embarrassing time of need. We put hope and many high expectations on him. He and his staff met and exceeded our expectations. If you need an attorney that will make you feel comfortable, not judge you and move mountains for you this is the one.

Aaron was very professional but also very understanding and made me feel positive throughout the entire process. He handled any concerns or questions that I asked and was upfront and honest. Even afterwards he still took more of his time for me and the results were fantastic. Aaron was very prompt and helpful, I would recommend him to anyone. I cannot express how pleased I am to have had him represent me, and in the future would not hesitate to contact him again. Thank you again Aaron everything was very appreciated.

I had the pleasure of working with Jennifer Moore for my family’s estate planning needs following the loss of my father. From our very first meeting, Jennifer demonstrated an impressive level of professionalism and empathy, making a difficult time just a bit easier for us. What stood out the most was her ability to seamlessly transition our family matters from another law firm to Stebelton Sinder practice. Jennifer took the time to walk us through each step of the process, ensuring we understood our options and felt supported. Her compassionate approach made it easy to discuss sensitive topics, and her expertise gave us confidence that we were in good hands. I highly recommend Jennifer Moore for anyone in need of estate planning services. Her dedication, professionalism, and genuine care for her clients truly set her apart. Thank you, Jennifer, for your invaluable assistance during such a challenging time

This is David writing this post. Jennifer Moore was referred to us by a family friend. I was in need of getting legal documents in place for my aging parents. We started we a phone consultation. I knew from that interaction we needed to meet Jennifer. We set up a meeting and from her first spoken words she had our attention. Jennifer put us at ease with a trust that was created to safeguard assets from the medical system. Even though we needed 5 years for this to happen, I knew this is what my parents would want. Jennifer explained everything and assured us we were doing what was best. She calmed our nerves and spoke in common terms we understood. By the time this was all done, I was practically in tears just knowing we found the correct attorney and made a friend for life. She is definitely an honest, dependable, trustworthy person to take care of her clients needs. I can’t wait to work with her again in the near future. She always tells you, if you need anything don’t hesitate to call her. Thank you Jennifer The Rinehart Family

She reminded me to not get emotional when going through my divorce. She was fair and objective but stood firm on the issues that was important to me, like my parenting plan and 401k. She was quick to respond to emails and gave me consultations over the phone and in person as needed. She also followed up timely with both the other attorney and the court. Her experience and professionalism helped me navigate through a very difficult time. Highly recommended.

A few years ago I was facing a lot of charges ranging from minor misdemeanors to M1 misdemeanors and was looking at quite a bit of jail time and I was appointed Christina as my attorney. She did not seem to care much about my case and what I was going through. It was hard for me to even get in contact with her. She wanted me to take the first deal that was given to me, which was the worst charge of all, and pretty much said that I wasn't going to get anything better, but in the end I DID get a better deal that only ended up with some probation, but it was not cuz of what she did. So I do NOT recommend her as a defense attorney for criminal cases, she is better suited for "family" cases.

Christina represented me during a 3 year custody case. Through the ups and downs not only was Christina there for my family and I legally but also there for us on a personal level as well. In the end the outcome was exactly what we had hoped for and I can't imagine having a better attorney or person, for that matter, to be by my side through the toughest time of my life. If you're looking for an attorney who not only excels at her job but who also shows compassion for her client, I highly recommend Christina McGill.

I do not recommend Mary Beth Fisher for any family law matters. She allowed ongoing abuse from my children’s father and often dismissed serious concerns, even laughing them off during joint meetings. She would yell, interrupt, provide false information, and talk over others, then go unresponsive for months before sending invoices for her “services.” Instead of mediating conflicts, she added to the past trauma and made biased decisions that did not benefit the children. I’m sharing this to help others avoid a similar experience.

As a school administrator, I have worked with numerous child custody attorneys and parenting coordinators, but my past experience with Mary Beth Fisher has compelled me to write my first negative review. My intention is to protect children and the families involved in future cases. Mary Beth Fisher contacted our school regarding a student's tardiness, which was well within district policy, and attempted to disparage the child’s mother, who has consistently demonstrated herself to be a dedicated parent and an active volunteer within our school community for many years. The call seemed more like a venting session, where she frequently deviated from the relevant information. She generated stress to the family and our staff and the call served no constructive purpose. She also sought to alienate a well-liked child without any justifiable cause, merely asserting that she had the right to contact us. A more appropriate approach would have been to consult our school policy online, which would have clearly shown there were no issues warranting such negative attention from her. Instead, she chose to misuse her position as a court-appointed representative to intimidate parents, teachers, administration, and, most regrettably, the child involved. My primary concern is always the well-being of our students. Our school intervenes in co-parenting situations when we believe a child is in danger, at risk or when school policy has been violated—none of which was applicable in this instance. Instead, Ms. Fisher used the call to intimidate and engage in unfounded gossip, questioning our well-established policies and the integrity of those involved. The end result of the call with Mary Beth Fisher, along with several meetings with teachers, counselors and parents, was that there was no reason to have engaged everyone in the first place and no further action needed. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend Mary Beth Fisher as a parenting coordinator or attorney. Her conduct is decidedly unprofessional and falls far short of the standards required to effectively support families and children.

Although I initially agreed to hire Ms. Fisher, I was disappointed in her approach, both towards the parents and children. We spent a lot of money, without any benefit to our children. Our teens frequently told us that Ms. Fisher made them uncomfortable and asked questions that put them in the middle, the sheer reason she was hired, which was to prevent this.

Paul Hensley is very laid back and has no passion for his job. He does not care if he wins, he still gets paid. He is more concerned on keeping the judges happy then fighting for his clients. He was completely unprepared for my cases, cuts deals that benefit him more than me, let my sister and I sit at the court house for 5 hours one morning and never showed, he will not produce any detail billing and you will see why; very shady to say the least. The courts assigned the wrong child to my case and no one caught it until it got to me. I am worse off now with his direction and "professional opinion" and tens of thousands of dollars in debt. He never cross examined me or anyone else on the stand and never called my witnesses and lead me down a path I my never recover from. When asked why he stated, "the Judge had somewhere to be, and she was getting upset the case was taking so long" Mostly, he took away my chance to sue the city (for being wrongly accused) and my ex wife for damages and falsifying police reports. Once I confronted him on this, he withdrew as my attorney with not so much as a heads up.

Absolutely the worst attorney I’ve ever dealt with! Stated he would charge $75 an hour charged me $100. He did nothing in the month I had retained him. Retained new counsel a month after Mr.Tawney did nothing for my case and within 24 hours the new attorney had a courtdate and requested things from the defendant and attorney that Mr. Tawney should have! Unorganized and had to submit my documents to him twice, which was a red flag and my sign to hire someone else, so glad I did! Don’t waste your money!

This woman is the reason my son is now deceased. She took him away from me and turned him over to my ex-husband and due to his neglect, my son is now dead. She is not a good lawyer. She got totally sucked in by my ex-husband's puppy dog face and his "cute" German accent. She actually took letters from people that he coached (they admitted it to me later) and used them as truth against me. She cannot be trusted to ever do what is right for any child. Do not hire this person. She is lazy and ignorant.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
