Sarah is a wealth of information. She was knowledgeable about the divorce/custody process and was even able to recommend a couple things that I could do on my own rather than taking everything through the courts. Sarah is also very empathetic and I felt like she really understood my story and was able to help defend me at my hearing. She was always calm and professional which helped me to be more calm during court. If you are looking for a lawyer who will take the time to get to know your case and is actually looking out for your best interest rather than just how much money they can make off of you, Sarah is your best bet!

I was lucky enough to find David Lutz to represent me through a contentious divorce, which included the custody of my child and the splitting of two businesses among many other assests. He was very resourceful and knowledge about the law as it pertained to very specific concerns and issues regarding the division of assests. What was most helpful and important to me was his role as an empathetic advocate. The divorce process can be very confusing and fraught with emotion, he was able to calm fears and guide me through the process . He returned my correspondence very quickly, even when he was out of town. He personifies the attributes of someone you can trust especially in a very difficult transition to navigate. I highly recommend him.

I retained David Lutz as my divorce attorney after first consulting with another lawyer whose primary focus was to secure an outlandish retainer. I knew within minutes of our initial consultation that David would offer expert counsel. He proved to be extremely knowledgeable and experienced in all areas of law. David’s exceptional representation in my divorce and child custody case allowed me to receive results that far surpassed my expectations. I have since sought legal advice from Mr. Lutz in a civil matter, and hired him to produce legal documents for estate planning purposes. Had I known him before, I would have retained him in a personal injury case. David Lutz is a trustworthy attorney who maintains honest communication. He represents the legal profession ethically and professionally. His attorney fees are fair and reasonable. And his staff is thorough, responsive, and personable. I highly recommend David Lutz without hesitation.

I highly recommend Harmonson Law Firm! My daughter and I were both injured in a car accident and our car was totaled. We had absolutely no idea what to do next and were referred to the Harmonson Law Firm. Attorney Clark Harmonson worked closely with me every step of the way through the legal process to help recover maximum funds for medical bills and property damage. He and his team helped take the stress out of the scary stressful situation, taking on all of the legwork with the insurance and medical companies so that my daughter and I could focus on healing and recovery. He and his team truly care about their clients and always put us and our recovery first! I always felt informed and involved through the process and that I had a strong, driven attorney/partner on my side to fight for what is right! I can’t say enough great things! Thank you again!

As a public defender who works for the city, a very bad experience, inattentive, zero professionalism, without giving information, much less communication with who she supposedly defends, I particularly gave her a zero.

I contacted Mr. Dugan on a Monday afternoon who was referred by CYFD via telephone conference for a free consultation. I hired him as we concluded my situation. By Friday he had all paperwork in order and we were able to get my granddaughter back who had been abruptly removed from her school. He was available for me 24/7 and never let me down. If you are looking for a genuine attorney, this is where you need to go. Also, kudos to Jessica as well. She was always available and made time for me no matter what. Thank you both, I don’t know where my granddaughter would be today if it had not been for you.

I highly recommend this firm to anyone who is looking to be represented for any case. The staff is very nice and friendly and they help you out in any way they can. I was struggling to find someone to represent me for my child’s custody case and was highly recommended to this firm and to be represented by Jannheli Perez. She is an outstanding attorney that will fight for you until the very end. Since the very beginning I was embraced and welcomed with open arms. They treated me like family. Jannheli is simply amazing and phenomenal! She goes above and beyond for you! She is kind, courteous, professional, and very passionate about helping others. She helped me throughout my whole process of my case and helped me understand certain laws to get me familiarized and prepared on what was to come later in court. She is very supportive and understanding when it comes to everything that she does for you! I am very thankful and grateful that I was lucky enough to have Jannheli Pérez as my attorney!

I retained this firm during a high conflict custody battle for my 5 and 7 year old kids in March 2024. Amy Bailey was my attorney and for some reason I never met her, very strange... Anyways, I finally got a court hearing which Amy Bailey had to ask for a continuance due to going on vacation suddenly. Then, the date that the court had set to be the next court hearing, guess who coincidentally was going to be on a flight again for some vacation time? Amy Bailey! The solution to that was to bring in Molly Kicklighter who not only annoyed the judge, but she didn't stand up or fight for me at all in court. I mean, how could she fight for what I wanted when she barely even took the time to know my case at all. Still, I was billed ridiculous amounts of money for nothing really. In fact, I spoke in court more than Molly did. My ex stood alone against Ms Kicklighter and got her way the whole time, it was kind of sad to be honest. Just a warning for whoever is hiring Molly Kicklighter, she's a horrible attorney. Office people were very nice and courteous but lost emails that I had sent. Whole folders of information were lost. They kept requesting documents that had already been sent. It was a complete mess. The only one that I can honestly say was worth anything in this place is Janhelli Perez. I wish that she would have represented me through the whole case but she only dealt with the child support part for some reason. They had said that she would be joining at no extra cost which was a lie. By the time Ms Perez was joining the case I was running out of money. I told them to withdraw from the case and of course, they finished up the money that was in the account and somehow I still owe them another $700, pretty wild. Bottom line, I would NOT recommend NM Legal Group to represent you, especially in a high conflict case. Ms Perez, you have a good heart, my mom loves you lol! I appreciate you and may God bless you always.

I’ve had some experience with this law firm. Back in March, I called about my case, and they said that there was a restraining order between my kids and I. They lied to me. That’s false. I’ve never had a restraining order between myself and anyone. Instead, free, fraudulent legal help was obtained in the workplace by the opposing party, at LCPS. All of these things? Very unethical. Misappropriation of tax-payers dollars, too, right? I now have to edit my review, because the law firm is silencing me from responding to their comment below. Everything I said is 100% truthful. Of course, they don’t like negative, true reviews. Prove I am in violation of a policy. You haven’t succeeded in taking this review down. Freedom of speech, especially of the facts.

Seemed like the only interest she has was to close the case and work with the opposing party on how to reach an agreement. At no time was she aggressive with working on my interests and with time the only thing that was asked was for a higher bill rate. The only time I seen her aggressive throughout the process was when she wanted her bill paid.

The white lady was amazing in court and I will always remember that. My situation wasn't great but one thing I knew I wanted time with my lil one . The other lady on the other hand didn't seem to care, she didn't explain anything . My baby mom quit her job to get me to pay the maximum child support and went back to work a week later the hearing. She had 3 sources of income , I only had one and it was a restaurant job at that. Plus I ended up having to pick up my daughter 4 hours away to get her.

I came to this law firm in dire need of assistance with the utmost belief that the name "Justice" was somehow upheld. I have absolutely nothing good to say about this disrespectful group of women. I trusted them with the most intimate facts of my case and when push came to shove I was left in deeper waters and worse off than when I started. Apparently "their" self image is more important than the client. I have never felt so taken advantage of.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
