Most attorneys will pawn you off on their associates or legal assistance, but Adam is really hands on and has always answered my calls. He is extremely professional, while also talking to me like a human being and in a way I can understand. He saved my a** when other attorneys told me I was screwed. He reviewed all the evidence and really put the time in and I ended up getting an incredible outcome. I would trust my family and friends with him and highly recommend him. He is actually in Salt Lake now, I am not sure why it says Layton. His info is: Adam Elmore 214 E. 500 S. Salt Lake City, UT 84111 (801) 449-0461

Jake was recommended by multiple attorney's and friends and they were right! I was so happy with the professionalism, knowledge and skill Jake applied to my case. During a difficult situation it was encouraging to feel seen, heard and met with incredible support. He helped me understand the process, what my rights are and what would be in the best interest of me and my case. He also helped guide me from things that wouldn't serve me or be important. I give his name to anyone I hear needs an attorney and I'm happy he has my back.

Mr Edwards has done a great job for me. He answered all my questions. He never judged me, as so many do. He was willing and did all in his power to resolve my case in my favor. I was embarassed and ashamed of my dui arrest and Mike made me feel like a real person who had just made a mistake. He was always prompt returning my calls, and emails and was always sincere and I never felt rushed. He guided me with every right step to take to get my very serious situation reduced. It looked pretty bleak there at first but Mike kept giving me hope. I did the work he advised me to do and he basically got me the deal of a lifetime. I got the most lenient sentence I have ever heard of and my charge was reduced to impaired driving. I have learned a lot through this life changing process, and having the right attorney on your side is everything. Michael Edwards is literally the best because he truly had my best interest in mind and did everything in his power to make my day in court a win. He is the best phone call I could have made that destraught day after my arrest. He literally changed my life!

This place is absolutely amazing, they had a very hard and long case that spanned almost 3 years. Brian and his team worked tirelessly to get me every bit of money that they felt I was owed. I cannot begin to thank them enough for all the hard work to get me the maximum settlement possible for me. I would DEFINITELY use them if I needed an attorney again.

Had an incredible experience working with Feller & Wendt. Months ago, they gave me a second chance after closing my case due to poor communication from my end. Prior attorneys from other PI law firm didn’t take my case seriously, but Feller & Wendt fought hard for me. I’m grateful for their dedication and I highly recommend!

I highly recommend Alison Bond. Alison has taken the frustration out of my very stressful divorce/custody situation. I had been divorced for many years but continued to have many court encounters with my previous husband. Alison was able to take the tension out of my situation and give me relief from the burdens I had been dealing with for many years. Alison approached me at every cross road and made sure she was moving forward with my wishes as well as letting me know the best steps to take in my situation. I have been very pleased with the work she did in my behalf and would, and do, recommend her to anyone needing legal assistance.

Alison is a great attorney. Although my case had jurisdictional issues, this was not her fault. My case not going the direction I wanted had absolutely nothing to do with Alison's competency. It was merely situational and beyond anyone's control. She is honest and upfront, something you don't see much of in attorneys. Her office staff is very pleasant. They take time to answer questions and seem very knowledgeable about the law and the court system in Utah. If I ever have a case that can be heard or needs to be heard in a Utah court, I will definitely use Alison again.

Did not send invoice informing of amount due, leaving me to (obviously) assume my retainer was still covering the costs. This was not the case, as I received a threat for my counsel to stop representing me if I didn't pay $1700. Shortly thereafter, I found out through multiple other sources that she had dropped me as her client. The letter came in today about why shes stopping representing me, the reason stated is it was difficult to communicate. I'd say so too, considering I'd have to send multiple emails, and call multiple times for an answer to literally anything. Not to mention shes hardly in office, and her receptionist will contact her and say " she'll call you when she's back in office", out of all the times I heard that, I NEVER got a phone call back. I would not advise this lawyer for these services. Divorce/separation is stressful enough, you deserve somebody that sends invoices, not ultimatums. A lawyer more capable of communicating with their clients when they need them, not when they get around to it. I've been to custody court before and my last lawyer gave invoices, communicated weekly with valid information, clarification, etc. It's out there. In the court room, Emilie is amazing. A force to be reckoned with. But most time is spent NOT in a court room. There are lawyers who are capable of doing both, that's my review.

I chose to not have a lawyer. I believe that made her think I was this broke person that could not provide for my child. She assumed I lived in an apartment. She assumed I couldn't afford an evaluation. To the point she tried scaring me with the cost. If your a single mother who chooses to not have a lawyer be prepared for her to try and walk all over you and get you to just agree with the other side. She already made assumptions and chose a side, certainly not a mediator like in her job description.

Cathrine was VERY unprofessional. Showed up an hour late. Did not act as a mediator at all. Took sides and would not listen to both parties. Had a woe is me attitude. Said very rude and mean things when she had no idea the back story. 10/10 would not recommend. Don’t waste your time or money.

The worst of the worst!! If you’re looking for a competent Special Master, RUN in any other direction!! Catherine will refuse to make actual rulings, despite giving herself deadlines, and instead will just keep playing games with her clients and have the exact same conversations on repeat over and over and over again for literal months on end (while billing you for every minute of her time to do so) without ever ruling on anything. She’ll hold your rulings hostage until you pay her never-ending bills, but then when you pay her bills, she’ll still refuse to issue an actual ruling. She is a single mother who favors single mothers and picks sides. She is incapable of remaining a neutral party, but doesn’t have the integrity or honesty to dismiss herself from the case when it is blatantly clear that she is absolutely not neutral. She doesn’t have the basic competency to understand what her role as a Special Master even is, let alone perform her role. Instead of simply looking at existing court orders and the Parenting Plan and ruling according to what those documents say, she tries to insert her own opinions into her decisions and tries to change the Parenting Plan to fit what her opinions are instead of what the parties have previously stipulated to. The only time you will receive actual rulings from her will be after you’ve had to file a petition to have her removed from your case after waiting for literal months with still no rulings from her, all while continuing to play her games and pay her never-ending bills (at which point she’ll get petty and finally issue a ruling which is completely down in the weeds and simply petty and blatantly a vindictive personal attack for damaging her ego by requesting to have her removed from your case). Catherine is nothing short of an absolute nightmare to work with and if you’re considering hiring her, RUN in the other direction as fast as you can!! Cannot say enough negative about our entire experience with her from beginning to end.

My estranged wife hired Todd Sessions as her divorce lawyer and got a bad deal, which makes me feel bad for her. Granted my estranged wife is a drug addict; however, Sessions did very little to help her get alimony and maintain positive visitation with our children. At one point in court, Sessions committed a logical fallacy and appealed to a higher authority (dropped another judges name) in an attempt to make himself look good... wow! In the end he was more concerned about getting paid then helping his client :(

Mr. Sessions at first was eager to help, seemingly giving information and instructions for our custody case. After my husband and I did all of the work and put everything together on our own for our hearing, Mr. Sessions scanned it in (leaving out documentation he had that we didn't) and emailed it to the court...charging us $1000 in the process. We had a very strong case, however, he continued to convince us that having him there at his hourly rate would be beneficial. After the Commissioner gave her orders, Mr. Sessions DID NOT reference the court minutes before filing orders with ORS, leaving out a major portion of the orders for us to receive 7 months back of paid child support, as well as 50% of the medical expenses from that point on. Three months after filing incomplete orders to ORS, we have yet to receive a return phone call or email, or have the corrected orders given to ORS. It's a several thousand dollar mistake, and it still isn't corrected. We're having to get him formally removed from our record at the court as being our attorney so that the court will allow us to proceed on getting things fixed on our own. $8000 dollars later, and we're still having a problem getting responses and corrected documentation...I must be in the wrong profession. Mr. Sessions is good for helpful information up front, but if you're wanting someone to follow you through to the end, I'd seek an attorney elsewhere.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
