I worked with Kj for 18 months to finalize my divorce. My ex fought us at every turn and there were so many times I was frustrated and either wanted to fight him in court or give up. Kj and her team were beside me every step of the way fighting for a fair outcome and and advising me on my rights and legal options. Her whole team was polite and responsive and great at communicating by email and phone. I would refer her for any of my friends.

First time going through a divorce and the whole process is very intimidating. Ryan explained what I needed to do and took care of the rest. I even threw in a few curve balls which made Ryan’s job more difficult but he handled it very well. Ryan streamlined an unnecessarily overly complicated process (In my opinion) which is called divorce. Thank you!

Jacob represented me even living two hours away. I had been "boxed out" of local attorneys. He spoke up for me during my first hearing. He stopped the other attorney from distracting the judge with nonsense and it felt so good to have someone on my side. I will definitely be keeping his representation.

Jacob was open-minded and considerate. In family matter cases the drama can be outstanding but he and Wendy were tenacious when working as a team and Jacob phenomenal in his approach when handling my case. He worked with me on every aspect and kept me in the loop of every detail making sure not only the needs of my child were met but the needs of my personal family and household at hand. I would highly recommend Jacob as his help benefited my family greatly! He made it altogether EASY for me to concentrate on my everyday business and successes as well. My child involved in the custody case has come through this with little effect by the legalities as our end was kept as simple as possible while the other side tried to influence the children. The professionalism of Levy & Harris has prevailed even when the drama from the opposing party tried to ensue. Our case was long, but worth it. The year and half Jacob spent on our case with diligence has proven to be worth the wait. A battle will always have ups and downs, but Levy & Harris has proven to lose little battles and won the war in my case. I praise their efforts and highly recommend Jacob! My child is thriving thanks to this great outcome!

I had an unfortunate experience with this firm. I paid $325 for a consultation with attorney Maryanne Pitcher, but after waiting over an hour, I ended up meeting with someone else who left their firm shortly after. This individual requested an additional retainer fee, despite the fact that I had not received the initial consultation as promised. When I raised my concerns about not having met with Maryanne, my case was dismissed. I find this situation to be quite disappointing and believe it is important to bring attention to it, so others may be aware of my experience. I intend to take steps to ensure accountability with the state board on their dishonesty.

Don Scales was my public defender back in 2015. At our very 1st meeting I discovered he hadn't even looked at my case file yet. He asked me repeatedly what I wanted, "what would be your Christmas morning?" But when I told him he laughed at me and said, "that's not gonna happen." Had I known I was supposed to do his job for him I would've come in better prepared. Again at our second meeting he knew none of the details of my case, was rude & at our 1st court appearance he fired me. He's not a good attorney, certainly wasn't for me. He never listened to me & failed to even become familiar with my case.

Donald Scales was my first interaction with an attorney. After a horrible and stressful several months I found myself needing legal aid. Mr. Scales provided the help I needed. He fixed everything better than I had hoped and I am truly grateful for his services. I know that all sounds cliche, but it's true. I was nervous the first time I called him on the phone but he was a good listener and caring. He really seemed to care about my situation. I hired him and he did more than he thought he could. He didn't make any empty promises. He just gave some predictions on what may be likely outcomes and I am very happy with the outcome. He really was very easy to talk to. I felt comfortable being open and honest with him and I am sure that helped. I had several interactions with his legal team and they too were helpful and caring. So thank you. If you choose Mr. Scales and his team you won't be disappointed.

This man has held my family (children) together for almost a decade. He has given this Dad the ability to remain an important part of his children's life throughout it all. My children thank him for this... I negotiate daily, my career demands it. This is Charles strongest talent. He will never ask for the moon, only ask for what is right. I have appeared in court three times with Mr. Kochlacs and on all three occasions (divorce, custody and child support) I have walked away each time with what I wanted and needed! His services are very affordable for the excellent results I have received. I would not hesitate to recommend Charles to anyone, for any family matter!

Charles did a great job, defending me, but also believing in me as well. From the moment i stepped into his office until his last day of my defense he was always there. he never gave me information until he needed to, and was reasonable in his rates. i respect charles and his office for working out my defense and sitting me down to explain things without beating around the bush or giving that shady attorney type persona. although results will vary with a case by case basis, i believe he did his best with his knowledge and care in handling my case.

If you want your court postponed over and over and cam to just sit there and watch you loose your home and everything else then this is the guy for you . He will say things like “ I forgot we can ask for that” then add another court date and want more money from you ( even when it’s his mistake) to only postpone again once you actually make it to court. You better be ready to pay this man a lot of money and him casually say it’s postponed again. He can literally have all the evidence to win your case and not fight at all to present it. You will loose everything waiting for this man to maybe try and help you.

He has a calm, professional demeanor and comes prepared but at the same time is quick thinking and can pivot when necessary. I’ve personally witnessed this in court where Cam has influenced outcomes with quick thinking which comes from his vast experience in family law and his deep understanding of the his clients situation and goals. He has represented me in numerous hearings and a couple of trials over the last 5 years. If your case is uncontested, then Pedrojetti might be OK for what you need. I hired him to initiate and represent me in a custody hearing. Drafting documents was always back and forth due to errors. He burned through my retainer account (and then some) without even stepping foot into court on my behalf. Opposing counsel filed to have a jurisdictional hearing for the matter and he gave me the ultimatum of coming to a settlement agreement with baby-momma before the hearing or else he would remove himself from the case….. within less than a week of the upcoming hearing!!! Being an interstate jurisdictional matter, I studied the UCCJEA which nationally governs interstate jurisdiction disputes. When I spoke with him and pointed out different points and provisions of the UCCJEA and showed that Oregon hands-down had home state and full jurisdiction over the case, he simply told me I was wrong. (I sincerely doubt he even bothered to familiarize himself with the UCCJEA.). With new counsel by my side Oregon decided that it DID have jurisdiction to decide the case. I guess on one hand I am glad that Pedrojetti refused to argue jurisdiction on my behalf rather than show up to court and not make a good argument. That said, he should have set his pride aside and admitted his ineptitude in arguing jurisdiction rather than tell me that I was wrong. I know lawyers aren’t cheap, but he cost me way more money than the little bit of work he did filing a few documents. Crooked as they come. “Saul Goodman” ………..but without the results.

I contacted Attorney Michael Cougar with questions about my mothers estate. It took Michael 2 days to return my call. We agreed to a phone appointment day and time. At appointment time he didn't call. After waiting 10 minutes I called him and left a message. He returned my call several hours later saying he had taken an online class that day and was returning my call. He seemed to have forgotten our appointment. Today we spoke. He spoke to me in a confrontational manner as though he was angry. He said many things including, "I can't answer your question.", a series of "You" statements directed towards me, "you asked me a question, I gave you an answer," was one of his replies. In sarcasm he said "Of course, there are" as though my question was wrong to have asked and the final comment was "whatever, whats the next question?" at that point I felt I had no other option but to end the call. It matters not if he was having a bad day or perhaps didn't want to speak with me. This guy is a loose cannon. His sarcasm and impatience was uncalled for. There are plenty of other Attorneys in Medford. Cross Cougar off your list.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
