She is so thorough with the client and she has a great relationship with many of the “important players” in Walton County CourtHouse! I was updated on a regular basis. However since this case was delayed and extended due to the pandemic it was a bit more expensive than I expected but I wasn’t ever overcharged for anything at all I think it’s a big deal for you too have someone like Mrs. Stewart working for you and your family!! She’s knows the law especially Family Law and she’s just great, honest, and a engaging lawyer for her clients! I love her and her AWESOME PARALEGAL Stephanie and Danielle have always been a very good paralegal with impeccable service, communication and typing up drafts/orders etc!!

I am forever indebted to Saralyn who fought to keep my daughter in Georgia. She fought for us as if we were family. Watching her work in the courtroom and in depositions was incredible. If I didn't know better I would have thought we were the only case she had, given the level of research, passion, and commitment she gave it. As a father the cards were already stacked against me and Saralyn fought for a just and fair outcome and got it. I highly recommend her!

I reached out to Saralyn for help with my case after getting referred to her by two different people. Saralyn provided exceptional service! This was my first time using legal help and I must say it was definitely worth it. Saralyn and her assistant Courtney were by my side the entire case, answering my questions, following up and taking my calls. She helped me get custody of my six year old son. I can literally say, with no exaggeration, she saved the future of son and mine as well. Thank you Stewart Law Office!

Marriage is hard. Divorce is even harder. I was married for 7 years. It was suppose to be forever, and my world came crashing down. A friend recommended Marcy Hanks and her team as my lawyer. During the consultation, I was so nervous. Nervous to tell her the things that should only stay intimate within a marriage. She assured me that I could tell her everything and that she was there to support me. They always say that the only one’s that win in a divorce are the lawyers. I disagree with this statement whole heartedly. One point during the divorce Marcy called me, not as my lawyer but as a Christian friend, she had been reading messages that my spouse and I were sending each other back and forth. She wanted to make sure that we did everything in our power to save this marriage. I assured her that we had: marriage counseling, Re-Engage, Small groups, and an intensive marriage retreat. We were two broken people who truly loved each other to the best of our ability. We were just slowly dancing in a burning room. Marcy and her team were there for me every step of the way. Making sure that my girls and I were taken care of financially and emotionally. To work for someone while they are going through the most painful time in their lives and to do it with so much love and compassion, that is what makes a good lawyer great. Thank you Marcy. Thank you to your entire team.

I hired Marcy to represent and fight for me during an ugly custody battle. It was my first time ever dealing with the court system and was extremely nervous and scared to death that I wouldn’t receive all the outcomes that I hoped for. Marcy went above and beyond to call me down, talk me through every document, laid out a clear plan of action, and communicated every detail of every thing that took place during the months before it was settled. I would highly recommend her to anybody seeking the absolute best lawyer around! She is beyond a fantastic lawyer but better yet an incredible person. She fought for my rights, as a single mother who was never married to my child’s father, and never let me lose faith or hope!! She will forever be in our hearts for everything she did for my family!!

Words cannot express how wonderful Marcy Hanks is as an attorney. She and her staff are the definition of professionalism. I always felt confident knowing I had such competent professionals handling my case. Marcy represented me when I was seeking full custody of my three children. Being a man, I was extremely worried that I would not have a chance, and my children would not be heard. My first consultation with Marcy quickly dispelled any worries that I had. Marcy provided me a detailed and strategic legal plan during our first meeting. From that day, she executed that plan to perfection. She was relentless and meticulous! The correspondence I received during this lengthy case was excellent. Marcy and her staff always kept me well informed. I honestly felt like I was communicating with family because it was so genuine and frequent. Marcy's confidence during this stressful and emotional time was exactly what I needed. It inspired me and kept me going! Her courtroom preparation and demeanor was excellent. It was very comforting to know I had the best attorney in the room, which was evident by me gaining full physical custody as the outcome! If you're looking for an extremely intelligent, charismatic, and strategic attorney, look no further. Marcy is the best there is. A fantastic person through and through. She helped change me and my children's lives forever.

When I was looking for a Family Law attorney, I wanted one that knew the law, would aggressively represent me and would fight to protect my interests. When I met Chris Piner, I knew I found the person I was looking for. He offered me great legal advice on how to deal with my case and actively pursued settlement offers. When these offers were rejected, he argued my case in court and did not stop until he had what he wanted and subsequently won. Although my relationship with Chris has always been professional, he makes me feel like a friend after each and every conversation. His confidence lifted the burdens and stress off of my shoulders. Hands down I will have Christopher Piner represent me in the future.

Sam Barth represented me on my divorce case and criminal charges. My ex-wife had filed against me. Sam not only proved her to be a liar in a court of law but also handled my divorce excellently and did not allow me to be taken advantage of. Sam Barth is a lawyer who will fight for you. Not one who sits back and simply lets the wheels turn. He actively gets involved and represents you aggressively. He will Go the extra mile And It's not afraid To go. To then representing his client. I had a district attorney who had tried to stack The deck against me By adding extra charges. Sam fought her and went over her head so that I would not be taken advantage of legally. When I say this man will fight for you It is an understatement. He has excellent execution. He is incredibly educated in Law and legal matters And is not afraid to roll up his sleeves and get in the fight to provide his clients with the best legal services possible. I can tell you this from experience. He is worth every dollar. When Sam Barth represents you, you will see where your money went because he will not allow you to be taken advantage of by the system. I could not highly recommend a more excellent attorney.

I’m beyond satisfied with what my attorney was able to do for me. He was very professional and polite. I had gotten into trouble and honestly had no idea which attorney I was going to use. After a bunch of phone conversations with a bunch of different attorneys, I decided to go with Crawford and Boyle. He negotiated a plea agreement and I was happy with what he was able to accomplish. Fast forward to court, he went above and beyond and did even more than the negotiation stated. I would recommend anyone in search of a great attorney to Crawford and Boyle. My greatest appreciation goes out to my attorney.

Melissa was the GAL in my case. I got everything I was after in my case. It is about how her and her office handled the after math of my case and the fact that once she did her first interview I never heard from her again. In the final custody order that Melissa approved it stated that both parties are to split all GAL fees evenly. I have already paid $1500, the other party has not paid anything. We stared asking what the final payment was a month and a half before our court date. Her office kept telling us that they would get it to us. Finally 3 business days before the court date Melissa sends a bill for $232.50. come to find out that was billed twice once to the other party and once to me. for the total $465.00. My attorney and I told her office that I have already paid $1500.00 so that money needs to come from the other half. Melissa also informed us that she would seek further attorneys fees if I fought it and we had to go to court. Her office is unprofessional and likes to do things at the last second so you can't fight it. Please use someone else. I'll update when we go to court.

Melissa handled my divorce 4 years ago, mediocre at best. The only reason I had to seek an attorney was because my stbx offered 25% of his 401k, after being together for over 27 years, married 23. Believe me that’s all I got, minus half of $80,000, he said he had before we married, she should’ve advised me to seek half of that also, but didn't, she nor the mediator did. My experience also got the home, because I am the one who moved out, but I didn’t get a penny to start over, except a 401k, you basically can’t touch! Anyway, now I am approaching SS benefits, & I never received a copy of my divorce. Called her office & after almost 2 weeks of them “searching”, for my case, they advised me to either call courthouse to receive my copy, or maybe my ex’s Attorney! She was not very easy to respond to calls, emails, etc. my last contact I tried to have with her is an email, I sent to her, approximately 5 days before my divorce’was final, no response, but sent me a letter stating when in fact it was final, about 3 weeks after the fact, again with no divorce certificate. I paid several thousands of dollars for basically only one meeting, a few emails, & that’s all. I would not refer anyone to her.

Very unprofessional from start to finish. She was the Guardian ad litem in a custody case. She took the side of one parent. Never verified anything ex had said against other person. Made assumptions about one parent. If she would have done some fact checking she would have found out the one parent was lying about the other parent. She cancelled multiple interviews with witnesses several times. This added months to the court case. Was told by her secretary that the GAL had Vertigo. And that was the reason that the interviews was rescheduled. And the secretary even said she had to pick up Melissa Shannahan from home and drive her to the office. This was all due to her not being able to drive because of her medical condition. If she isn’t able to drive she should not be making legal decisions for a child. She also TRIPLED her fee. Guess it was due to her canceling interviews and rescheduling due to her condition. That added a lot of extra hours that she billed for. Really don’t know how she can sleep at night knowing she did not do the right thing for a child. Can only imagine this wasn’t the first time this happened by her. Probably not the last either. Would not recommend her as a guardian ad litem to anyone. She is located in Monroe Ga.

I was served papers in'08 for legiimation, visitation & full cusody of my oldest 2. I'm already a very shy, quiet & nervous person & that just made it worse. Sheryl was recommended to me so i checked her out & as we got to know eachother all the fears i had slowly went away. She worked fast & hard & was so good we only appeared in court once & the case was closed. I walked out with sheryl, my kids, smilin with my head up high & then some (i didn't even fight for). I was very satisfied & did use her again & would recommend her any day of the week.

I hired mrs.sheryl (for lagitimation, visitation & custody) in 08' based on recommendations not knowing what to expect. Throughout my case l let her know i am a very nervous & scared person. She helped put me at ease, refused to let let me be any kind of negative & most of all supported & made me feel comfortable before she went ahead with anything. We went to the first court appearance & she worked her magic so well it was the last court appearance for us. I walked out of that court room with mrs. Sheryl, my kids, smilin big& holdin my head up high. She not only wonmy case but got me granted things by the judge that benefit me & my kids that i never even asked for. I will always use for for my representation & bighly recommend her endlessly like i have for years.

Sheryl is inept. She doesn't communicate with you at all. She is more interested in running up your bill and she does no follow up. Like me, I had to do all the work to prove my case and then she sits on it. She in what we call "A good example of a bad example" in lawyers. Other family law lawyers keep their clients informed. Sheryl doesn't even return e mails or calls unless you make her aware that you are angry with the way she and her law firm handle your case. You will be surprised at how inept and non-communicative this woman lawyer is. Seek better council.

Not being an outlaw, Ms LaMalva made sure the state of Georgia took $495 from my bi-weekly paycheck of $950 for one child. In addition to this ridiculous payment, I explained to LaMalva that I also pay $94 in health insurance each month for the child. I argued unsuccessfully for the state to justify the reasoning and Ms LaMalva defended the state much to my detriment. In other words, Ms. LaMalva is heartless, inhumane and only seeks where the almighty greenback-dollar treads. For the fathers of Georgia, pray not to fall prey to LaMalva.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
