A fair attorney who helped me navigate the challenges of my divorce. Prompt with answering questions. I always was able to talk to her in person and not have someone else answer for her. My employer retired me because of a disability. I had talked to one other attorney in Muskegon but he was of no help to me at all. Mr. Hoopes was recommended to me by a friend. He worked with me during the whole process that is necessary for getting disability & kept me updated on everything. His support during the end process, especially when I had to go to court & meet with a judge was wonderful. It was very unsettling & he was always right there to answer any questions that I had. With Mr. Hoopes help, I was able to get SS Disability!
Just a year ago I had a issue with Social Security & Mr. Hoopes also was able to help me out then.

I used Matt for my divorce and I have so many regrets. I honestly have no clue how he has such good reviews. He gave me 0 guidance throughout my divorce process and then he would give me crap when I did stuff on my own.
He did not respond to emails. I notified him and his staff of my address change multiple times and they’re still sending things to my old address. Honestly, idk how I’m even going to get my final divorce papers. I’m probably going to have to drive to a town that I don’t even live in anymore and spend hours at the courthouse. All because updating my address was too difficult for Matt and his staff.
When I would ask Matt a question, he frequently would ignore me. He never told me what to expect throughout my divorce, and he never even gave me a rundown at what to expect at our various hearings. He didn’t work for me at all.
I wound up giving my ex husband pretty much everything he wanted because he had a great lawyer and Miller acted inconvenienced every time I reached out to him. I would have fired him, but he must know he sucks because he took literally all my money up front so I didn’t really have a choice but to stick with him.

After goto the hospital and being sent for more testing I started to research Law offices in Muskegon area and after meeting with several attorneys I decided to go with WML and Attorney Mr Shibley. He was on it from the jump, with in a few days he tracked down the person I was in the accident with, verified that they did have ins and who the policy was with. They would reach out to see how I was doing with treatment and if there was anything I needed help with. Being new to MI he helped me understand how the auto insurance process worked here and the ppl in the office were always helpful and a pleasure to work with. From start to finish WML and Attorney Paul Shibley were a class act, and my best interest was top priority.

Chris Wilson will take your money and not do anything.
He wasn’t responsive to what I originally wanted. I hired him in 2019 of Jan and the case was prolonged til Dec 2020 before he actually wanted to drop out of the case. He claimed for retiring. However my case wasn’t even done yet. I expressed to him how I didn’t get anything throughout this entire journey. Somehow he got a court date the next week to withdrawal. However how come my case was prolonged over a yr and we had we had everything we needed to win and get my CS lowered. We were on a zoom court meeting and he told the other attorney to put his mic on mute Bc I could hear him. He works with the courts and the other party instead of working for the client entirely. He allowed the other party to continue get the case rescheduled when he should have in in fact explained to the courts we can’t continue to reschedule just because the other party keeps forgetting to bring their documents. We also found the other party lying in court and I asked him to get the other party in trouble for lying under oath he completely blew it off. We had the lie on paper and stating it in court and he didn’t go after that. I’m no attorney but when you have things to work for you and help with the case you would expect the attorney to go after that and use it. NOPE THIS GUY WAS PROTECTING THEM LOL. He doesn’t do anything LAZY GOOD THING HES RETIRING.I REPEAT DO NOT USE THIS GUY. Do not use do not use. Also him and teeth Nolan teamed up to get the other party to contact all the other attorneys in Muskegon so when it was time to hire another attorney they would tell me it’s a conflict of interest because the other party already reached out to them to try and hire them..... lol games games games!!! I’m actually in the process of filing a grievance with Muskegon FOC and Attorney Wilson!

Well, I would strongly advise against using mr. Houghtaling! i trusted him and he abused that trust. We had an arrangement and I still don’t know to this day why he gave up literally and failed to communicate with me what was happening. We had 21 days to respond to the courts and he totally would not respond to me. I went into office, he told me he could fix all of it to my face , then to again go to no communication. Not really sure what type of man does that, I was making monthly payments. So I don’t think that was it. Maybe this is what lawyers do, I don’t really know. I feel like he set me up for failure. I’m sad cause I lost a lot now and that I trusted him!

Do not hire this attorney! He talked about all the things he will do and then never returns calls, texts or emails. I called and texted 3 of 5 days a week and never heard from him. Went to court for a hearing scheduled by my ex-husband to be and no prior appt or even a meeting at the court house with him was done before we met with opposing counsel and I lost because Mr Houghtaling did not pay attention to details in the proposal. I am now paying all the bills at the martial home, including mortgage payment and all credit cards, earning
1/2 of the income of my ex to be. My ex-husband to be is informed by his attorney of everything in the case and I still am asking questions and not getting answers. I need to fire this guy!!! Which I intend to do.

We hired Chris to handle a Probate case. I've had to remind his office several times to complete paperwork that needed to be submitted for the case. His paralegal lacks the ability to effectively communicate and is very short with us over the phone. She acts as though every phone call is bothersome to her and wasting her time. They repeatedly give us conflicting advice and don't seem to listen very well. I've asked for return phone calls from Chris and as of right now, I still haven't received the return phone call I asked for in August 2016. Three times in a row he cancelled our appointments after we took time off of work to meet with him. I'm not real sure why it is so difficult for him to tend to his paying clients, but Chris nor his Paralegal seem client focused. I am very disappointed in his lack of ability to follow through on all the things he's promised us he would do.
