I am currently going through the hardest time in my life, I never thought that I would be facing the uphill battles I currently am and I never thought that someone I hardly knew could care so much about not only helping me in the courtroom but also in my personal life. Jeanette defines compassion and strives to achieve a certain set of results within her clients cases. She is truly someone that I thank God for putting in my life and I don’t put that lightly. I read a review once for an attorney that said something really corny like “if he grew a beard I would call him Jesus Christ!”, well let me say, I met that attorney that person wrote the review about and I would sooner call him Satan. My point is this, Jeanette is not an attorney that will give you fake promises and results or slouch at all when it comes to your case, she’s as passionate and hardworking as it gets. She’s someone I will always call on anytime there’s a legal matter I need help with, she’s someone that I’ve also genuinely grown a friendship with and because of her involvement in my life, I know with certainty that my children and I will be ok.

I hired Ms. Broady more than once and ever since I met her she has helped me change my life one step at a time. Being held in front of a judge is something a lot of us never expect to be. But hear me when I tell you that your time and money is valuable when hiring Broady. Do as she says and she will get you the results that you need. She is just magical all over. Thank you Ms. Broady!

Colin represented me in my second divorce which was simple, straightforward and inexpensive. My first divorce I was raked over the coals financially and emotionally. Colin's style is casual assuredness, easy going and non-confrontational. He has a "Let's keep it simple" approach. You cannot go wrong with this gentleman. I have referred clients to him and they concur.

Colin and I have been working together for years on a difficult collaborative case that would ebb and flow due to conditions that were outside of our control. Colin always made time for me when I reached out via multiple media options and together we negotiated a very fair settlement for both parties involved. I could not have done this without Colin's expertise, leadership, negotiation skills and forward thinking. I would and will continue to recommend Colin for legal representation to anyone interested in a Collaborative Law resolution to their situation.

I hired Karen to represent me in my divorce case. I was treated very well by Karen's staff and especially by Karen, herself. Karen explained the processes to me very clearly and I always felt very informed of what was going on in the case. We met some contention toward the end of the case by the other party, and Karen demonstrated a mastery of the law and guided me to better results than I'd even hoped for. During an emotional time as a divorce, I felt amazingly supported and taken care of. Would highly recommend Karen's office!

Karen provided consultation services to me over 15 years ago and was amazing. She was helpful, very patient and kind during my legal proceedings. In 2012 I went back to Karen for legal assistance. She was unavilable for my court date but provided me with a list of attorney's she would recommend, but she was always available if I needed her help with any of the issues with my case. I retained a different firm and regret it completely. Once the divorce was over and the other firm substituted out of my case, I retained Karen for the custody issues. Karen and her staff are easy to talk to, reliable and very knowledgable about Family Law. Karen has always been fair, not just to me but to both parties, ensuring the children are the number one priority in the case.

My husband abdondedmyself and the kids after 23 years of being married. I was recommended to Mr. Pritchard by a friend he was very compassionate and gave me some advice without charging me. He spent more than an hour and half talking with me and gave me advice on what I need to look out for in order to protect myself when I am a mess on not what to do. My husband leaving was completely unexpected not just by myself but the kids. I have two older sons and a 12 year old daughter.

I was extremely fortunate to have used the legal services of Janice Munoz for my divorce. The process went extremely smoothly thanks, in-part, to her skills as a great listener and an affective communicator. As stated on her website: 'We Prepare for Court, but Always Work Towards Settlement' - Settled we did. Thanks for making it all about me!

I hired Ms. Mioni and she proved to be ignorant to end my case. I had to hire a new lawyer and she refused to provide a statement and refund my money! Illegal! She is a part time attorney! She does not work on Fridays and most days she works 1/2 days to pick up her children. Her clients are on the bottom of her priority list, but she will take your money and not complete your case, I hired her, she asked me to get certain financial information and I did then I found out she requested the same information herself and charged me! She QUIT MY CASE the day before she was going on a 3 month holiday vacation, yet I paid her for services not completed and she kept my money. She did not know how to quit my case LEGALLY, so I had to wait until she returned from her 3 month vacation for her to go to court & quit legally! She is a part time attorney! DO NOT HIRE THIS PART TIME LAWYER! YOU WILL REGRET HIRING HER! If you hire her, ask her when she intends to go on vacation! Ask her what hours she works. Her Staff are interns, no experience.

My separation and divorce was the last thing I wanted to go through. I had one consultation with Lovette Mioni, and due to her youth, I almost misjudged her. I asked her point blank if she could go into court with me and fight like hell for me, and boy she did. She knew her stuff, we consulted on everything together. She absolutely had her clients best interests at heart. Me. We got a good judgement, almost everything we wanted. We expected far worse, and my ex dropped all her claims against me when she saw that Lovette and I were prepared to do battle against her and her weak attorney till the end. Not only that, Lovette suggested we settle and not go to trial (forfeiting thousands in fees) because it was in my best interest to accept the judgement we were offered under the circumstances. Lovette Mioni did a great job and was empathetic but totally professional the whole way. In the end, she was very happy for me regarding the details of how I was moving on with life post divorce. Obviously, 5 stars.

My experience with this law firm has been nothing short of a distressing emotional rollercoaster, especially given the time-sensitive nature of my child custody issue, which remains unresolved, ultimately causing harm to my children. From the very beginning, there was a complete lack of transparency regarding who would be representing me. Despite my clear preference for Andrea, I was abruptly assigned a different attorney without any explanation or consultation. This sudden change left me feeling disoriented and manipulated, all while my children's well-being hung in the balance. The mishandling of vital legal documents due to internal miscommunication only added to my distress. These errors led to prolonged delays and increased financial strain on my end. It seemed as though they deliberately avoided direct communication with me, the client, which was not only emotionally destabilizing but also hurt my children's prospects for a stable future. The most alarming and traumatizing incident was when legal documents were incorrectly served to the wrong address. This not only caused significant delays but also placed an unnecessary emotional burden on me and my children. The fact that such a fundamental mistake occurred, causing further harm to my kids, is heartbreaking. Despite investing a substantial amount of time and money, I have yet to witness any meaningful progress in my case. The frustration, stress, and disappointment caused by their actions have left my children and me emotionally scarred. Their emotional instability in handling this critical matter has had a direct impact on our well-being. While I understand that mistakes can happen, the firm's refusal to acknowledge and rectify these errors, especially in a time-sensitive child custody issue, is inexcusable and has had a profound effect on my life. My initial decision to choose this firm was based on a recommendation, but the traumatic and emotionally unstable experience I have endured has had consequences beyond repair. I hope others are aware of these distressing practices and ethics and think twice before seeking their services, especially in sensitive child custody matters.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
