Catherine was in incredible from start to finish. She was very informative from start to finish. This was an adoption and it everything thing that could go wrong did. Catherine continued to advocate on my behalf as well as ensure she did everything in her power to finalize the adoption. She responded to every email and phone call within hours if not minutes. She went out of the way to make sure we understood every detail of the process. She was even able to adjust the process to accommodate our sensitive situation. It is always humbling to be vulnerable and leave your fears, insecurities and hopes in the hands of others. I can say for myself my family and I was in the best hands. She was beyond words and will never be forgotten.

We have been in court on and off for over 7 years fighting for more time and trying to get my ex to actually follow the court paper in general. Obviously, those bill certainly added up and we used a few different lawyers prior to Catherine. Our first lawyer, didn't know family law, our second lawyer over promised and under delievered, our third lawyer had a paralegal doing all the work and messing up everything over and over while charging us for every word we spoke to her. Final we were received a recommendation for Catherine and what a breath of fresh air!! She handled the case on her own and actually remembered us, our case and things we asked of her. She was very real and honest with us and went above and beyond. She also didn't nickle and dime for every question, email or phone call. Catherine was very fair and professional. She is intelligent and knows what she is talking about. You can tell she is well respected in Riverhead court house by the other lawyers, officers and judges. I would recommend Catherine to anyone looking to get the job done correctly with someone who will fight for you, understand you and listen! I hope I never have to be in court again, but if I do, I will 100% be calling Catherine.

Catherine represented me on a custody modification case. I found her to be very dedicated, honest and fair, but most importantly she was prepared. She always reached out to make me aware of updates in our case, and was very quick in any responses if I had any questions. The opposing attorney in our case, even stated Cathy is a tough adversary, and that's what you want to hear! I was very pleased with the outcome of our case, she cares about seeking the best possible outcome for her clients, I highly recommend her if seeking an attorney!

Lance is an exceptional lawyer – not only is he experienced and knowledgeable, he is also compassionate and deeply empathetic. When I came to him in the midst of escaping an abusive and traumatic relationship, Lance provided both legal guidance and unwavering support. He helped me navigate the legal process, while also encouraging me to rebuild myself and my life. His professionalism was unmatched, especially when facing the opposing side's constant attempts at manipulation and intimidation. The journey was long but Lance helped me get through it. He is a remarkable lawyer and I am forever grateful for his help.

I was not referred to Lance. I live 90 minutes away from his office and needed an attorney on Long Island. I chose Lance based on a few positive reviews and a frantic need for representation. A complex divorce has had me working with him for almost two years. Amid a hectic schedule that all good divorce attorneys navigate , moments when the emotions of it all make you feel snubbed by the world, and even your attorney, Lance has helped me to create a case against my ex-wife that will likely result in the win I’ve longed for. If it doesn’t, it will have been of no fault to Lance. Together we crafted a motion that dissected my ex-wife’s false claims and lies. Over a year later, 8 adjournments and a continued emotional roller coaster I was able to see Lance on trial. His performance was no less than brilliant in every way possible. While my case is ongoing, his strategy made a fool of opposing counsel, and his intellect, instinct and confidence in front of the judge completely demolished the false narrative that was presented to the court by my ex. As a loving father this moment to fight back felt like life or death for me. While I feel like I’ve already won bases on egregious actions of my ex, and the truth, I’m realistic a court may not see what I saw. But what I saw was a true professional who accomplished more than I could ever ask for in a trial. I don’t expect to lose, but if I do, it will not be because of Lance Simon. He is not an attorney who focuses on divorce and collects a paycheck by squeezing every penny out of his clients, he is a skilled professional focused on winning As a client, it is hard to differentiate emotions from necessary strategy. It takes a pro who knows how to position your case in front of a judge to succeed. I trusted him and he surpassed my expectations. The best way to work with Lance is to ask what he needs from you, and how that information needs to be disseminated to him. Your efforts will make the difference. Throughout this wild ride, Lance will be fast to return text and emails, and slow at time. This is common for every attorney brave enough to take on the insanity of divorce. Your time will come when you feel completed loved by Lance. Be patient. Your opinions will be heard. You’ll like be put in your place a few times, but tensions are high in battle. True Leaders keep the novices in line. You’ll need thick skin everywhere you turn while in a divorce battle. Beyond legal, and after significant time spent with Lance, at his office and even at his home, I also leaned he is a very good father and loving husband. His humanity has mattered to me. It should to you. Regardless of my final outcome, I’m happy to refer Lance as exceptional attorney. After the bills add up, and stress you out, you’ll be getting more value then you know. Great job Lance.

Five stars is a very unfair rating for such a thorough professional. Richard walked me through the entire process, understanding my emotions and taking the time to clearly explain how things were progressing. He amply demonstrates his knowledge and experience. Richard dedicates all his attention to you to the point of making you feel like an exclusive client. I can't imagine what would have happened if I had chosen another attorney. Those of us who take the time to dedicate these words is because we do it from the heart and so many good comments cannot be a coincidence. Richard has been a fabulous attorney and friend. I have been a client of Nicholas Gabrielle for over 25 years. In that time he has always offered conservative, honest and sound advice to my parents, children and me. He is not just an excellent attorney because of his legal prowess, he is an amazing human being who really cares about his clients. I know that when I require a strong legal mind to help make clear decisions, no matter what time, day or night, Nick will pick up the phone and guide me to the right path. I first met Nick 27 years ago. In that time he has become our family's “go to guy” in all legal matters, minor to major. He has advised us countless times and has successfully satisfied our cases that include: motor vehicle accidents, adoptions, legal name changes, Last Will and Testaments, Power of Attorneys, Health Cary Proxies, real estate sales and closings, seeking financial options to avoid bankruptcies, saving our home twice through the mortgage crisis of 2008, and various brushes with the law. He is trustworthy, thorough and truly cares about the people he represents. There are few people that I depend on and trust, Nicholas Gabriele is one of them. If you are in need of an attorney, give him a call. You will not only have successful legal outcomes but you will have gained a reliable member of the family.

Mr. Gabriele, (Nick, as we were quickly on a first-name basis) saved me $2,500 upon my first visit with him. As we were initially consulting, I took a phone call from my realtor who informed me that the sellers of a home I desperately wanted needed me to come up on my bid. A bit panicky, I blurted out , "Okay, $5,000". Nick said to me, "No. Offer $2,500", so I did. My bid was accepted! Nick had my back throughout the entire process, both selling my old home and purchasing my new home. He kept me informed every step of the way. Should I require an attorney in the future, I will, without hesitation, call Nick Gabriele--a pleasure to work with!

Hired Mr. Arnoff because he assured me during my free consultation meeting that he could prepare a compulsory accounting for my probate case in Riverhead Surrogate’s Court- after six months of trying and having the court reject his prepared accounting and then having to tutor his assistant on how to prepare it, he ended up hiring an accounting firm at an additional expense to my estate to finally prepare it correctly to suit the court’s protocol. In my opinion, overall I was not satisfied with this law firm and would not recommend them. I had to keep an eagle eye on their invoices to me as well after they charged me for my free consultation- they made many errors on my monthly invoices, which they adjusted once I pointed them out.

Harvey did a fantastic job for me and my children. I walked into court confident with the knowledge that he was the more experienced and professional attorney. He always made sure I had copies of everything he had done and that I was well prepared for each day in court. On the down side, it sometimes took the better part of a day for a return phone call, but he was none-the-less always responsive. His office staff was highly professional and very caring. I also can't say enough about his associate Paul! On the rare occasions that Mr. Arnoff was unavailable, his associate did a fantastic job as well. Thanks Harvey!

I am an attorney who retained Frederick "Rick" Foster, Esq. to represent me in my Suffolk County Supreme Court divorce case in 2002 (Index No. 01265- 02). His performance was a disaster for me. My ex-wife and I settled in open-court a year later on January 15, 2003, and Mr. Foster recited the terms but amazingly failed to address a necessary element entitling me to that divorce. My ex-wife then met John Ray, Esq. at the courthouse and began co-habiting with him, which continues to this day, and he undertook her representation by filing a motion to vacate the settlement due to Mr. Foster’s failure to meet all the statutory requirements in the settlement. Judge Emily Pines misguidedly granted the motion rather than force my ex-wife to file an appeal, so I was remarried by operation of law. The tens of thousands of dollars I paid her in the settlement was considered marital money and not credited in the final outcome, and that drained my cash. I had closed my law practice and building business in 2002, and found myself between a hard place and a rock. Mr. Foster appealed Judge Pines' order with a lightweight brief and we lost. In Tarone v. Tarone, 25 A.D.3d 779 (N.Y. App. Div. 2006), the court said, “Open-court stipulations are judicially favored, and will not be set aside absent fraud, overreaching, mistake, duress, or unconscionability.... However, in the instant case, in view of the determination that the plaintiff failed to establish his entitlement to a divorce, the stipulation of settlement should have been vacated....The stipulation cannot be considered a valid postnuptial or "opting out" agreement pursuant to Domestic Relations Law § 236 (B) (3).” Mr. Foster's lack of attention to detail, possibly due to his then frequently nagging migraine headaches that he really should have disclosed to me before taking my case, changed the course of my life. Due to his mishandling of the stipulation of settlement, my divorce went on for several years, and after Mr. Foster billed me $96,000 for his fees in 2007, I had no choice but to shamefully file personal bankruptcy. With a second divorce process came nine years of dealing with issues, and the last appeal was decided in 2011. By then, I was financially devastated and renting a little house in eastern Connecticut. I am just now, 16 years later in 2023, financially recovering fully from Mr. Foster’s error. Let the facts speak for themselves about Mr. Foster and his conduct in my divorce case. Now let the truth be known that choosing Mr. Foster as my divorce lawyer was unequivocally one of the worst decisions of my entire life, the most impacting on my lifestyle, and the most costly to me personally. I should never have trusted him with my rights and my security. If you want to contact me for any reason, please use my website contact form at TaroneEsq.com.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
