I have worked with Michelle on the other side of a divorce case and also as a mediator, and I endorse her without reservation. She is smart, knowledgeable and prepared. She has a gift in being able to assertively advocate for her clients without promoting unnecessary conflict and expense. As a board certified family law specialist myself, she is one of a handful of lawyers I would hire to represent me in a family law matter.

Al has been great from the first steps of this process all the way through. His knowledge is vast and has helped us greatly. He explains things completely and always asks if we understand and what questions we have for him. At no time did he make us feel embarrassed or ashamed due to our situation. His empathy during the most difficult financial time of our adult life has kept us from going completely mad. We appreciate everything he has done for us and highly recommend his service.

We honestly just appreciate all of the help Al provided us during this time. Our situation was definitely unique and not ideal. Without hesitation, he took on our case and successfully navigated it to completion. This was important to us because others had turned us away. He listened and answered all our questions or concerns. He thoroughly prepared us for our creditor meeting. His system of uploading all needed documents was efficient. We overall appreciate his services and glad we circled back to him. Thanks Al for all your help.

I would like to thank Mr. Malone for helping me out with this entire situation. One of the best lawyers in the DFW area that help with bankruptcy and financial issues. All my questions were answered thoroughly and in a timely manner. I never had any issues. I know choosing bankruptcy could be stressful but Mr. Malone made it an easy and quick process. After so much time of trying to find justice with our children’s father, we received it today because of Tom McElyea. If I could compare Tom to anyone in court, Tom is Rocky Balboa. He is a champion, there is no doubt! From our family, he receives a continued standing ovation and there are not enough words to describe how incredibly grateful we are for his diligence and quit whip. Tom, Thank you for advocating for our children and being their voice.

Tom took a case that meant the world to me. He told me he'd have the contract/demand letter within a week. I sent him detailed letters as requested by him. He'd say "out of town" - next week when I would reach out. My family reached out to him he spoke to them an hour. We were supposed to go and meet him and he did not answer our calls. I told him often while waiting how grateful I was often as I sent detailed and painful information before he took my case as per his request before he took and I sent several following - and the seven months after while he claimed he was working on it. and the hope that he brought to what was a very serious violation I'd suffered the consequences for years with. After sending detailed, personal, hard to write (re traumatizing) but willing to tell my story finally after he accepted my case at least SEVEN months went by. I would say are you getting my message? YES. He would say. He made commitments and promises and made himself out to be someone that cared about victims. Then he told me out of the blue after waiting SEVEN hopeful, patient months, e mailing, telling me I'd have documents and contracts "next week" then it would be "next two weeks". Said he couldn't speak to my bf due to "client/attorney privilege." being patient and grateful he then said was going to charge me thousands up front after waiting and corresponding and WAITING atleast six months - when I finally said can you please tell me when you will be doing what you promised and have led me to believe for months- never stated that when he took my case nor the seven months of correspondence -and not actually follow through with what he had said he would. When I was pondering what to do when he suddenly needed thousands to do what he said he would do for seven months - which was never asked when he took my case and literally strung me a long knowing every bit of re living it was painful and personal - and I also told him I had turned down another lawyer and picked him, he waited two days and then said (after he never followed through, made false promises, never apparently read everything he'd asked for and I'd sent to him though told me he did) that he was "moving on" after just two days of thinking about it while he took eight months leading me on in literally every way I have all of the messages/txt - asking for thousands to do a hundredth of the "work" he said he was doing all along. I have been absolutely floored and it was been gut wrenching and heartbreaking. as have those around me even other lawyers. Not even a PHONE CALL in the end. I do not write reviews but in this case I have researched and it goes beyond unethical in my opinion borderline cruel. Actually cruel. . Quite a shame when he claims to stand for sexual victims. I have read his google reviews some were negative - they seem to have been removed now but I still went with him as he made me feel "heard" and that I could trust him in our initial phone call. . If you want someone who is honest and actually sincere and genuinely cares - I'd highly suggest you do not use this man. Don't walk, run. Literally if you have a loved one that has been wounded seek someone who is honest, communicates and doesn't lie, not follow through, claim to be doing what he is not - make commitments - string you a long MONTHS, allow you to re live your trauma to HIM - received your correspondence, string you a long months allow you to keep writing believing he will do what he says he will .... knows you're waiting on him, knows how painful it is - only to have been doing nothing but allowing you to wait and re live your trauma and asking for cash up front in the end for a hundredth of the work I was told he was doing all along is beyond sketchy and in my opinion and other very cruel. When I even told him calmly how deeply it affected me, zero response.

My husband's insurance allowed for us to have free legal consultations, so we must have met with about a dozen attorneys before finding Leslie Barrows. Every attorney we met with for our child custody case told us we could not get sole custody because it would be 50/50, regardless of how much thorough documentation we had to prove that it was not in the best interest of my step son. Leslie, and her team fought so hard for us! This was a case that was transferred from Michigan to begin with, so they helped us get proper jurisdiction in Texas. It was an incredibly stressful time in our lives, but the Barrows firm worked with us every step of the way. They took the time to explain everything to us, and reassured us when we were anxious about the process. They treated us like people, not just another number. I cannot thank them enough. As of today, bio mom has officially terminated her rights and we will be proceeding with a step parent adoption. I am in awe of everything Ms. Barrows has worked to accomplish for us. She has worked tirelessly to get us to this point. Everything we were told we couldn’t do, she has accomplished. The best part for me is what my son told me once the termination was official. He sighed a breath of relief and said he is so happy he never has to worry about bio mom coming into his life and making it a mess again. It’s not what she did just for us. She gave peace to our son and that means the world to us. Thank you again, Leslie. Truly. You’re a God send.

I highly recommend Justice Law Firm. My experience with Tracey Justice was outstanding. I was going through a very difficult time in my life and her legal advice and firm services helped me tremendously. She was professional, but personal and caring, and her experience level with the issues I was facing carried me through the process with confidence and clarity each step of the way. The experience I had with her staff was the same. I like to ask a lot of questions and appreciated the way I was given complete and accurate legal advice with every question so that I felt confident and assured in all my decisions. But equally important, the answers to questions that I didn't know to ask were fully revealed and explained in a way that made the process better than expected. No one wants to be involved in a legal case, but if you find yourself there, you will have confidence and peace of mind with the Justice Law Firm on your side.

I hired Kimberly to handle my case. She was able to keep me at ease. Throughout the process she informed me of everything I needed to know. She was knowledgeable and professional. Hopefully, I never need a lawyer again, but if I do, I'm hiring Kimberly.

Debbie represented the wife and I in a few different custody cases. She never sugar coated anything and told us when the cases would be easy or they may take a little time to get through. She made my ex-wifes lawyer look like an idiot on more than one occasion because she always had her ducks in a row on court days and he seldom did. Never one time did we go into a court room without everything we needed that day.

This law firm promises to fight hard for you, and makes you truly believe they have your back, they do not. First of all they double charge, I made a complaint about the over charges and they were never addressed. In mediation my attorney just sat there letting the very terrible mediator guide the entire process, my attorney folded like a cheap suit. In talking with my Ex, he told me that his attorney was fighting for everything that he got, if anything, I would recommend his attorney rather than mine. Be warned, Robinson and Henry will take your money and run, they are not aggressive at all.

She called me because I was refereed her by a aid service, Im 20 this is my first marriage, so it’s my FIRST divorce ! I called confused and asking for help because I don't know the first thing about getting a divorce, I explained to Ms. Rita M Boyd this was my first time and Im confused on the whole process she proceeds to ask me because I'm so confused “Am I on medication?” what a wonderful thing to ask a grieving WOMEN going through a DIVORCE with a child ! 0/10 wont help if you don't know much about getting a divorce ! STAY AWAY ! Edit: You gave me the aid website I had previously called and I stated that to you ! I didnt pay a consultation fee because YOU called me asking what I needed help with and I told you I needed help with a divorce and you spoke me like I had 0 sense from jump, so I explained to you that I knew nothing about the divorce process, and you said “Might I ask how old you are” because I stated I was confused, You said you would help with the paper work but wont show up to court with me ! Why would you do paper work but not come to court with me for 1,500 ? Before I hung up you asked if I was on medication, and my mom who has waaaay more tolerance than me, hung up on your unprofessional, rude, behind. You have a angry soul and I pray no one goes to you !

The initial conversation sounded very promising. The next two months seemed like a completely different experience so much that I decided to go another route before my actual court date. First in two months she never tried to setup a meeting or phone call to get the proper paperwork/proof related to the case on my behalf, one week out I was messaging her like “Hey we need to meetup to get you all this paperwork so I’m not going in there empty handed”. Also after being counter sued, I messaged her about this and her response was “ok” and “you didn’t hire me for that new case” basically saying it has nothing to do with her and proceeds to send me another retainer bill. I told her to call me trying to figure out how to get her my paperwork and what else I would need for court and she HUNG UP IN MY FACE! Which is why I ultimately fired her on top of not being prepared! Causing me to spend even more on a new attorney in less than a week before court date! So fast forward to now: All she has done on my behalf was file the papers to initiate my case, $601. Which was written with some errors, also my Ex was served improperly as per the judge so technically she could have not shown up on the court date and there was nothing I could’ve done about that! Never spoke with me about our plan, never got any paperwork or statements from me, was released prior to going to court. When asked for a billing statement and the remainder of my retainer, first she states “she can’t talk to me” when in fact she can when it’s related to billing and not the case/legal advice itself. She then tells me she is not going to reimburse my remaining retainer of $5k and that I actually will owe her a balance. I wish I followed my gut when I read her reviews from other men online, she sounded a lot more professional and on top of things on the phone during our consultation. She may be better for women, men look elsewhere! Update Aug 16,2024: Rita proceeded to reply to this same review on FACEBOOK and call me a liar posting “Lies and More Lies” as her response! She literally messaged me twice and called me twice to ask me to take the review down because “It will post everywhere if it’s left up for too long!” I REPLIED “Refund me properly and we can talk about it”. This call was ended when she stated she had a call she had been waiting for. Screen shots below, since I’m a “liar!”, would she be calling and texting me if I was “Just lying on her!” She is bad business! Please stay away from her! I’m giving her, her 30days to bill and refund me or I will be reporting her to Texas Bar and taking her to Small Claims court! I initially gave 2 stars, since being called a liar I dropped it to 1 star! She literally calls every person that gives her a bad review a liar! Go look at her reviews for yourself. Update Aug 20, 2024 And now she is blatantly lying and making up random statements under review to make her self not look like she is the problem stating “Didn’t send her an email address for her to do her job”…you mean the email that I sent her when I paid her initial retainer or the entire form I filled out with all of my information as well as my sons mothers, the day I hired her! This lady is very crooked and keeps getting worse. I’m just waiting my 30days to get my billing statement and return of my retainer or we’ll be in small claims court and I’ll be making a claim on her with the bar! All my emails and her blatant lying under this review will be submitted on her when we go to court if I don’t receive 50% of my retainer back. She hasn’t ceased to amaze me how unprofessional and bad business she continues to be. Update Sept 3,2024: After asking for my bill and remaining retainer for past few weeks I was forced to have to ask her again to complete our business. She tried to bargain removing this review vs completing our business appropriately. When I didn’t agree She ultimately said my $5k retainer was gone and that I actually had a $6k balance and she wouldn’t try and get the balance if I removed my review. Bad business please stay away.

Nicole went above and beyond in helping my mother in law with an unexpected divorce at the age of 86. The divorce decree was so well written that the judge did not make my MIL appear before the court. I would highly recommend Nicole and her willingness to help with such a difficult situation.

Nicole was nothing but amazing! She educated me and guided me throughout the whole process of my case. She advised me of all of the possible outcomes when it came to filing for divorce, temporary orders and agreements, and the finalization of the decree. With her advisement she would always make sure I knew that the decision was ultimately mine and she would back me up on any of it should conflict arise. She did not shy away from sticking up for me with a firm hand. It wasn’t needed in my case but I was put at ease knowing she would back me up to get the outcome I deserved. I would recommend her services to anyone looking to get justice when it comes to filing for divorce. Thanks to her I am finally a free woman and can move on with my life free of toxicity.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.

  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
