I retained Ted Butler on the advice of many people in the community and after reading all of his reviews. I needed the best of the best in attorneys while facing my legal battle, and he absolutely was. After my initial consultation with Ted, I knew he was the only choice to represent and navigate me through an exceptionally difficult time and legal process. Divorces are not cheap. Ted found every way possible to mitigate costs while always going above and beyond to achieve the results most favorable to me. He was always honest, straight forward, professional, and extremely kind. His communication with me throughout my entire 17-month process was outstanding. His assistant Deb, and his entire staff are exceptional. I never had to worry about what was happening with my case. He was prompt and responsive at every step of the way despite having a very busy schedule. He managed my expectations with complete honesty and never sold me a story or false reality. I was a difficult client, but he treated me with absolute kindness and compassion and took the time necessary to explain the process to me every step of the way. His reputation in the courtroom and his professionalism are unparalleled. He is the attorney you want on your side and absolutely do not want to face as opposing counsel. His knowledge, experience, and courtroom presence are unmatched. He far exceeded my expectations and achieved outstanding results that I never thought possible at our final trial. There are no words to adequately describe my absolute gratitude for all that he has done for me.

Ted and his asssistant attorney Amanda P. Blair were amazing on a very challenging custody case. They consistently were approachable, wise and conscientious in their application of decisions for the case and we succeed greatly. Better than I could have imagined. We ended up moving and unfortunately have have had to go back to court and we have had other attorneys which has made me realize even more how great these two were and appreciated.

My divorce took almost 3 years and included such fun items as a retired National Guard officer who refused to work, sued for spousal support, refused to pay child support, had a significant problem with alcoholism, voluntarily unemployed himself to reduce child support payments, and who hired incompetent lawyers. Throughout it all, Mr. Butler was the epitome of calm, cool and collected. He held my hand when it was needed, was a shark in the court room, and got me what I needed in the divorce to ensure my children were taken care of and that I wasn’t taken advantage of. In a time of uncertainty and chaos that was my life after my ex-husband and I separated, Ted was the one stable person I had working on my side to make sure I didn't make any costly errors in judgment based on emotion instead of logic. His staff is top notch and worked together so that my costs were minimized…even when my ex-husband tried to do everything in his power to run up my legal bills. Ted has my undying gratitude for making a thoroughly awful time in my life bearable. If you need a divorce attorney who shows his (very, very sharp) teeth when required, and is extremely knowledgeable about the Stafford, VA court system and the divorce process – Ted Butler is definitely your man. If you would like to talk to me for a reference, I would be more than happy to do so. You can contact Ted's office and he can give you my contact information.

Mr.Stone represented me for a case that he was able to get dismissed. courts and everyone working there respect him and his work from what I saw and he equally showed his respect for his line of work. Before entering the court we were able to even get to know each other and with my experience in meeting different lawyered for different reasons that to me was not only very comforting but assuring that I was in good hands. His advice was very insightful and very much cleared some clouds helping me move forward with what I have going on I am very grateful and I highly recommend his services. His office was very helpful and great with communication. I had hired this firm as I was having issues with my previous lawyer being in the same county with others as it seemed as not fighting for my rights but as a tool for other cases. My issue with this law firm are the following and I highly state those needing help review and verify. 1. I hired a service to be done. My lawyer from firm left during court. For what reason, couldnt tell you. Comes to find out it wasn't done and my previous lawyer has to step in and handle the rest of my case. Which did not make the judge to happy and caused confusion on who my lawyer was. Thank God I still had legal representation, unfortunately not who I paid to do so. 2. The person that worked the office last year would send invoice. Apparently they left, so when I found out I had not received an email. I reached out via email. Well apparently I got a response, but the email went to junk mail. 3. No I am in a position where email is my best form of contact or mail. I find out literally 2 days. That the firm sent a bill for less than $500 to a collection agency. Whi didn't not contact me. But only to notify me that I had a court date. Which I obviously could not attend given how far I am. 4. When I reached out to the law firm it took them days to respond and provide no help. I would ensure if you need legal help do your homework and make sure you lawyer has your back and will stay until is no longer need. You will still have to pay for there time and hope the send you an email every month for your invoices. If not your screwed for there lack of communication.

I would not recommend this firm if you want to get anything done. My lawyer was Brooke and she was always unavailable for talking. But would send emails for $75 a piece. It took multiple messages to them for them to file anything on my behalf. She never goes to bat for you in court. Let’s everyone else just decide how it’s gonna go. Then sends a bill a week later for her travel Time. Do yourself a favor and pay for a better lawyer.

Mr. Bryant was my divorce attorney who drafted our divorce agreement. When I had a consultation with him, he promised to file a show cause against the husband who had been harassing me with email, text and letters. I was unable to eat and sleep and lost over 20 lbs. at that time, having very difficult time. However, he did not file a show cause after hiring him. Mr. Bryant was the one who drafted our divorce agreement. He did not include two retirement accounts of the husband so that I could not receive the two accounts marital assets. Ex-husband kept majority of the marital assets. I realized this loss last summer, so I wrote to Mr. Bryant and his firm about this matter by email and a letter, but I have never received a response from him nor his firm. I still have the mediation notebook that he explained to me that I will receive 50% of all three retirement accounts. Mr. Bryant explained to me that ex-husband had right to claim child tax because he pays me child support. Even though I am a primary physical custody of three children, the husband can claim two child tax credits every year. This was the best scenario for him. There was a conflict of interest between the husband and his firm. The husband had a consultation with his firm, then I had a consultation with his firm during the divorce. When Mr. Bryant realized this conflict, still he did not withdraw my case. The husband did not disclose all financial documents. Our all-financial documents were under his name only, so I did not know what we had had. I wish that Mr. Bryant flighted for me so that we could negotiate fairly. Our child support and spousal support were measly compared to guidelines and what I should have received. Later, I had to hire a new family law lawyer to modify our child support. When I filed this motion, the child support was significantly higher. Our children should have received this correct amount since beginning. Mr. Bryant explained that I will receive a survival benefit of the pension. The husband is much older than me, so this benefit was a good option. However, Mr. Bryant did not include this statement in our agreement, so I am unable to receive such benefit. If he did not explain about this benefit, I had no idea, but he did explain to me, and I wrote it down in my mediation notebook. I really do not understand why Mr. Bryant did all this to me. Financially and emotionally has been hurting to me even today. I felt unimportant and neglected. I trusted Mr. Bryant so much, and he was my attorney.

I’ve been going to Mr. Jhon Bryant for more than 10 years. I was in an abusive marriage and thought I was doing the right thing staying with evil. For my only son. When the evil was abusing my only son, I had to do everything & anything to save my 12-year-old son. My only son & I got help from counseling and a psychiatrist. Wasn’t for John & his amazing stuff, I couldn’t have come this far or still standing. “He is worth every penny.!!! “ God bless you, John Bryant! They have saved our lives. BEST LAWYER & BEST STAFF IN VIRGINIA!!! 🙌🙌

To be fair Mrs. Stubbs is the only divorce lawyer I have worked with but she was amazing! Her entire team was so supportive I truly felt cared about. She held my hand through much of the process answering every question with patience and I always felt protected. My ex husband was not as big of a fan often referring to her as my personal guard dog. I would simply reply with “That’s because you’re on the teeth end, as the one holding the leash I think she is is wonderful.” Mrs. Stubbs & her team were worth every penny, and I never for a moment regretted hiring them. Would give 6 stars if I could.

I would not recommend. There were many times I had to remind her she represented me and not the other party because she prioritized getting any information THEY requested over what I needed before court. I also had the exact same experience another client posted for their review, despite stressing that we needed to ask for child and spousal support she said, we can ask for that during your divorce case and waited until right before we were about to walk into court to run the paperwork up to the clerks office so not only did we not get that set but because paperwork had not been submitted until the last minute I was ordered to pay the other parties attorneys fees. The only time she was quick to make sure I recieved paperwork was when I went to sign off to end her representation as my lawyer. I was told I owed her thosands of dollars and because my retainer had been used up and when asked why this was the first time I was hearing about this was told "we've been emailing the bills to you" despite me repeatedly informing her I was having issues recieving emails. The multiple times I was in her office there was no mention that she was now billing me well after and that my retainer was used up. Instead I was handed a large envelope on the spot that was as thick as a book listing billed hours. You are better off handing your money directly to the other party and saving yourself the time and frustration.

His did not give us good advice or legal strategy. Specifically, he did not advise us of the “Troxel v. Granville” Supreme Court Ruling that caused us to lose custody of our granddaughter. We dismissed him, appealed, hired better lawyers and got her back.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
