To say the least, Mr. Bernheim was very thorough and professional in handling my case. He is tough, sensible, and fair. He and his staff are always available, and make sure that they return your calls as soon as they are able. But what I impressed me most with him and his team is that they really cared about me. I felt that I was not just "billable hours" to them. I was a person who needed help and advise, and they really provided that to me in a most sincere and genuine manner. They really made me confident and comfortable with them.

Mr. Telkikar exceeded expectations when reviewing my contracts and forms. Initially, I had a few questions regarding a contract and not only did he answer all my questions but he provided me with additional terms for my contract that I had not even considered. He was extremely patient and helpful throughout the whole process. I feel confident with my contacts and will be using the future.

Hasan helped my wife immigrate here from the Philippines and was able to get her family here faster than I thought was possible. He was very thorough and did an excellent job explaining the process. Since then he has handled a couple of other legal problems that I had and kept them out of court. I was very happy with the outcome of those as well. I had a very expensive attorney before who did nothing but cost me money. Hasan was very affordable and his pleasant demeanor made the experience much less stressful.

I was blown away from the moment I met Cindy and her Brother (partner) Heber. They were both very helpful and clearly passionate about their work. I saw it as a huge positive and unique bonus to have a brother and sister team working on my behalf . I continue to work directly with Cindy on my situation and she has been heaven sent. She is highly knowledgeable and up to date with any recent changes to laws or documents. (I had a previous veteran attorney who didnt "keep up with the times"). She is extremely enthusiastic and definitely cares about establishing a strong reputation for having integrity. I have been completely pleased with that diligence and attention to detail. I have recommended Moran and Moran to friends and they have had a similar experience and positive results. Thank you again Moran and Moran

Marc Grossman and his highly professional legal assistant Tammy are one of the most professional and knowledgeable businesses I have come across in a long time. During the no-fee consultation Mr. Grossman and his knowledge of the particular legal situation I was facing was able to effectively diagnose my case and offer extremity valuable perspective that honestly might have taken 2 or 3 different and expensive legal appointments to get the same assessment anywhere else. Within about the first 20 minutes of the appointment I knew that I was getting an honest breakdown of my situation and that the Law offices of Marc Grossman was a firm that I could trust and would gladly do business with not only regarding the legal situation I was there to discuss that particular day, but I would this team of Tammy and Mr. Grossman on any and all legal matters I or my family may come across in the future. I am very grateful to have spoken to Tammy that morning when I called and made the decision to come in for that appointment the following Monday. with sincere gratitude for what you've done for me and my family's future and will recommend anytime a business associate or anybody in my sphere of influence in looking for legal counsel.

I hired Stephen to help me with a highly complex international custody case. His inherent knowledge of the law, both domestic and international, his awareness and sensitivity of the situation, helped to not only enlighten me, but also the opposing lawyer and most importantly, the judge. Stephen made sure the rights of the children were protected and put in effect. He is a great negotiator. Today, the children are better off because of him and the parents are talking to each other again. Without Stephen's skill set, our situation could've ended in a disaster. Therefore, I can only recommend Stephen to anyone dealing with a complex situation or where communication between parents has come to a halt. If you're looking for a lawyer with integrity whose main concern is upholding the law, Stephen Gassner is the right person for you.

Torrance is a high key professional and is skilled in the court room. He was able to communicate my perspective and concerns in court perfectly. I struggled for years to gain visitation and joint custody of my son but was able to do so on my own. He was able to bring facts to light in a way the court heard and I was able to get joint legal and physical custody and equal time with my son. He has continued to keep pushing to ensure I can help my son and to encourage the court to do what is best for my son’s overall well being.

Do not use this so-called court rep, he will do nothing for your case but take your money and not return it. I am not mad about the outcome of the case in my family court case, what I'm mad about is waiting an entire year to get my retainer balance returned to me. If you think showing up to court one time and filing paperwork one time equals $3500, you are mistaken it's not worth it I paid him $1,000 in cash at his office, not a firm in upland California- ONE MAN REP. , and then sent over another 2500 two days after he represented me in court after being stocked by his law office worker, GIOVANNI. - she was making sure she got paid, I have called and sent emails one response to the email telling me he was going to check my file because it is in storage SMH - trying to make it seem like it was so long ago he Only one man show law office - very, very unorganized - please don't rush to hire an attorney- and please don't hire this court rep

I hired Ms. Browne when my life was falling apart. My marriage collapsed, I was having problems with my kids, my work was suffering, and I felt like I was losing my sanity! I hired Ms. Browne to help me with my divorce and having her each step of the way was the best decision. She helped me get child support, spousal support, the house and most of all having her handle my case helped me focus on what I needed to do at work and at home. She is not intimidated by other lawyers and our Judge always spoke so highly of her. She got result and was fair and showed me she cared.

First and foremost she has no email, very unprofessional, never responds to your calls has no work ethic. Does not listen nor cares to you or your case. Moves like a snail because she will be charging you by hour. I agree with the last review stating that she is the "Lawyer from Hell". One star is even to good of a number for her. There is a reason why she must have been discipled. She dragged my case for well over a year had me like a dog chasing my tail. DID NOTHING PRODUCTIVE!!!!! Also she charges you extreme amounts for her doing nothing!!!!! DO NOT USE HER EVER!!!!! You are better off representing yourself honestly.

I FOUND MS MEDIAN TO REFRESHINGLY UNDERSTAND MY CASE AND HOW I FELT ABOUT IT. MORE THAN THAT, SHE TOOK UP MY CAUSE FROM THE VERY BEGINNING AND WAS RELENTLESS IN PUTTING PRESSURE ON THE OTHER SIDE. WITH HER TENACITY, WE FINALLY PREVAILED. SHE ALWAYS HAD TIME FOR ME, EMPHASIZED WITH MY FEELINGS, SUPPORTED ME AND GAVE ME CONFIDENCE. HER PRICES WERE MORE THAN REASONABLE AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER TO ANYONE SEEKING A FAMILY LAW ATTORNEY.

Hired her for divorce, took 2 years to drag so that she can earn the retainer fees. She made a deal with the opposing attorney and did not give me any documents. She even ripped my documents in front of me and refused to give me information about my case. I am planning to file a complaint to the State Bar. She's the attorney from hell that everyone talked about. She is better with dealing accident's claim etc. But not DIVORCE. Beware!

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
