Mr Singer exceeded all of my expectations as a client. I was particularly impressed with his response time to questions and thoroughness in following through with necessary steps and procedures. He proved to be knowledgeable, experienced, and well-connected within the legal circles of WNY. I give myunqualified endorsement for Mr Singer serving myself or any other clients in the future. Contacting Mr Singer with my legal needs was the best decision I could’ve made; it led to a positive and ideal outcome for my situation. Thank you, Mr Singer.

This lawyer works hard for his /her clients in the goal of winning the case. He doesn't put money first like other lawyers I met before .His cost is negotiable and affordable. Helped to win my CPS case and early Probation release. I would recommend anyone who is struggling with some cases to reachout to him before contacting with others .

I worked with Emily Spitzer on a family law issue for about 3 months. Previously I worked with about 15 attorneys in my lifetime in Ontario and NYS. Within the scope of my experience, I rate Emily as the top 5%. My experience was all positive. Emily is highly professional, very punctual, does not make empty promises, does thorough legal research, has excellent writing style, and what was very important for me, -- she has a positive and well-balanced attitude toward the client. I can honestly recommend her and will be happy to work with her again if a need presents itself. I am independent in my review and motivated by gratitude for the work well done only.

Cheryl was a calming influence in my divorce proceedings. She takes the time to listen and understand your position. I appreciated her candor and expertise. She will lobby on your behalf to attain those things that are important to you. I always, always felt better after speaking with.....or meeting with Cheryl. She gave me the confidence that "everything would work out!" I also appreciated her honesty in setting expectations. In a time of personal chaos Cheryl helped navigate through to an amicable ending. She was able to work with opposing counsel and move thru the process quickly and expeditiously. After all was complete and our professional relationship is over - I now consider Cheryl a friend. The highest recommendation possible!

I recently went to Berzer/Wolf Law Firm after the lawyer I was using wasn’t able to negotiate with the opposing attorney. My friend had highly recommended Ms. Cheryl Berzer. Immediately, she took the time to listen to my concerns and questions. She gave me a fair estimate of the cost for her services and explained her billing procedure. Cheryl Berzer answered every question I asked, gave me direct advice and explained the process that I would be navigating through. She also got back to me right away if I needed to inquire about an issue. She was able to negotiate and avoid a trial for me in less than a month, after a year and a half with a high profile firm. Ms. Berzer was excellent in all regards. I would recommend her to anyone in need of an attorney.

The first time I spoke to Paul was in December 2016 about my divorce, after consulting with him. I hired Paul wolf to start my divorce process. it was a bit complicated because I live in the Netherlands but got married in New York. Paper work took a bit longer then expected but I got my divorce in 9 months which is still a good time frame. He always answers emails. it was easy to make an appointment to talk on the phone. I would defently recommend Paul Wolf.

We consulted with Brian after being told by another Lawyer Grandparent Visitation is never awarded in our circumstance, and not to waste our time and money. Brian gave us suggestions on things to try with our son and daughter in law to resolve the issues before a petition was filed. We did retain Brian and at that time he was confident we would get time with our grandson. We did go to trial and Brian was excellent all the way through. He responds to calls and emails and provides answers very quickly He is very thorough and meticulous. We were awarded visitation with our grandson beginning in August and actually received more time than we expected. Everything Brian does is for a reason and to help your case so listen to the expert! He is very delicate with family situations and keeps things as kind and calm as possible. Having that first visit with our grandson was amazing and we have Brian to thank for it! My husband and I highly recommend him..

Brian Welsh was highly recommended to me by lawyers in other fields. I entered his preliminary conference with much trepidation. He instantly put my mind at rest, listened intently to what I had to say and understood from day one that I did not wish to punish my partner. Our conferences and phone calls throughout the following months were cheerful and professional. I was given good advice, told what was going to be possible and, in a gentle way, told what could not be achieved. The speed with which he dealt with my instructions and passed them on was sometimes alarming but the entire process of my divorce was very much quicker than I had anticipated and I am still friends with my ex-wife. I can and will thoroughly recommend Brian to any of my friends and colleagues as an honest, extremely competent and knowledgeable professional.

Mr. Clayton got my case and immediately wanted to review the information. He has made time to respond to emergencies and just to communicate in general. I dont know how he has time. He must genuinely care because he takes a true interest in your families situation. He wont just take your word for anything but if gives you a chance to show and prove. You will have a fighting chance at family justice if you have him as a lawyer. Everything takes time but he is willing to build rapport. Give him a chance it's definitely worth the time.

I hired Clayton Lenhardt as my divorce attorney in August 2016. I interview three attorneys, including Mr. Lenhardt before making my decision. After one meeting with Mr. Lenhardt, it was clear that his knowledge of divorce law far exceeds others in his field. Mr. Lenhardt and I were confronted by some very difficult situations throughout my 10 month divorce. Clayton approached every situation with confidence, thus making me less anxious. He understands how emotionally trying a divorce can be on his client BUT he helped me understand that approaching decision making with a level head was going to protect my best interests. Clayton was strategic, thorough and realistic with me from day one. He recovered a large sum of stolen money which proved to be a difficult task. He also helped me uncover funds that I was unaware of my entitlement to. Clayton was always on time for meetings or phone calls. He communicated through text message as well. Mr Lenhardt carries himself like a true professional and his confidence was reassuring every time we spoke. Mr Lenhardt's pricing was also fair, he does not call you to waste your time/money on the phone. He is all business and that is what you should be looking for when choosing an attorney. I would absolutely recommend Clayton Lendhardt to anyone in need of an attorney.

Clayton Lenhardt is not aggressive in the court room, he does not care about the children he is fighting for, more concerned about getting paid. He talks to other lawyers about your case behind your back and will unethically speak with lawyers you are fighting against. Charges way to much to be as incompetent of a lawyer he is. Do not waste your money or time.

This is a 2.5 rating. I have substantial legal experience myself and have attended law school and been involved in regulatory compliance and regulation and law development for many years. Keith was empathetic and potentially realistic. However he was also unresponsive and seemingly not interested in pursuing a difficult case. The negotiated consent order on custody of children perpetuated a situation that is likely not in the best interests of the children. We are back in court. I am representing my self and making good progress. Admittedly, this is a tough case involving the professional misconduct of child’s mental health counselor, who recommended that the children leave my custody. After filing a complaint with the NYS Education Department, this counselor is currently being prosecuted on numerous charges associated with professional misconduct including incompetence and negligence. I can’t fault Keith for this, he has likely never seen a fact pattern like this. It is pretty unique.

Christina dragged out my court case, did not even speak in court. My frustration led me to speak out in court to defend myself and my daughter. Almost held in contempt of court. Struck her a final check and watched her stroll down Delaware Ave. smiling and laughing. Attorney's and Magistrates know the outcome of your case well in advance. They will continue to suck money from you and drag out cases for their own financial benefit. Charged me an astronomical amount of money for terrible work.

The consultation with Christina went well, but once I paid my $3500 retainer, my divorce case went nowhere. Numerous phone calls and emails went unanswered as my retainer dwindled. She could not even collect simple paperwork from the opposing side, and spoke for me in our first court appearance incorrectly, as if she hadn't taken a single note from our meeting. The last straw was when she went to the second court appearance on my behalf after we decided it would be postponed due to lack of information from the opposing side and I still have no idea what transpired in that appearance for MY divorce. Do not retain her for your divorce, the case will drag on and you will be uniformed during the process.

Peter P. Vasilion he's a worthless lawyer I was in CPS Court for something that I completely had no partay in and something he knew I was innocent of and he still failed to help me get my daughter he failed the fight for a DNA test so to this my daughter's been in the system for 3 years since she was the age 5 I cannot see my daughter until she's 18 because of this lawyer he did nothing he brought nothing up when people were put on the stand he said nothing he read things off of a book instead of reading actual facts of the case so therefore I am going to parte and suing Mr Peter for professional malpractice, he refused to inform me of any emotions that could be served within the correct ample time to get DNA test to fight for my daughter he did nothing he never once called me he never once came and visited me he never once wanted to see me nothing I highly do not recommend this guy I'm sure you're going to get some people that say he's great great that's fine fine and dandy. But in my situation he's worthless and by taking my daughter away from me I sure will be coming after you and suing you in the court of law you bet that believe I will I'll be seeing you soon! I was also unfounded for anything against me I have the paperwork again thank you for causing my daughter for having a father in her life I should have known you were a joke the minute I met you I said that when I left actually to my father that you were a joke but I gave you the benefit of the doubt I even had surveillance that I offered to give him in hand to hand that I brought and he told me no you're worthless and again I will be seeing you in court I'm going to sue you for every penny you have and I'm going to make sure you get disbarred because my sister was there with her lawyer and he also said that you did absolutely nothing to help the case whatsoever

Peter was recommended to me to assist with a non-destruct application. The process of handling such an application is complex. Though it took some time to determine the appropriate course of action, Peter maintained communication throughout, providing a clear understanding of our progress. Ultimately, we successfully processed the application, and I am very satisfied with the outcome. Finding legal consultation on this matter in Western New York was challenging, as few attorneys were willing to engage. Finding someone as knowledgeable, willing, and capable as Peter was outstanding. I highly recommend him.

I would rate him as a solid 4.5 as obviously no one is perfect. Mr. Peter Vasilion had to work very hard and for many years in what I am told is pretty unusual. Our case in family court lasted several years due to multiple things including my choice to represent myself for years then COVID-19 & several changes in Attorneys involved. I think he was very straightforward and diligent. Even with these special circumstances, he was doing his best of keeping my daughter's best interest in mind throughout the many ups and downs and various Attorneys that were involved with my case. I would highly recommend Mr. Peter Vasilion. I saw his perseverance and professional dedication on display many times!

Kevin exceeded my expectations from the word go. He was always there to listen to my concerns, and answer my questions, and above all, represent my best interests, even when I was unsure of the path we were taking. He could see the big picture in ways that were difficult to fathom in the midst of the 18 month divorce disaster. My ex-wife's midlife crisis ended up costing her far more than even she considered. At the end, Kevin handed me every SINGLE THING I asked for in the divorce, and several things I didn't. My ex's lawyer didn't see several of Kevin's strategies coming and we surprised them several times in court. It was fantastic watching them unable to figure out what to do. Kevin gave me a shot at a life and a relationship with my children I couldn't have imagined at the beginning of the divorce. I have referred him to several of my friends, and he represented me in a post matrimonial matter, to swift resolve, also exactly what I was looking for. Kevin is professional, and did everything I asked him to. I would not hesitate to recommend him to another person, and I would not hesitate to retain him again in the future, should the need arise.

I was a client of Mr. Santoro. Mr. Santoro was assigned to me through the assigned council program for my custody and visitation battle. We spoke for a half hour a couple of weeks before our first court date. He then immediately went on vacation til the day before said court date. He showed up at that court date 25 minutes late and had me re-tell everything I told him two weeks earlier as he ran from floor to floor checking in for his other cases. His lack of attention led to him miscommunicating my schedule to the court and thus setting up a month of difficulty in picking up my son while we awaited the next court date. I also have to mention how oblivious and tone deaf Mr. Santoro is. Keep in mind, at the time, I had a low income that qualified me for assigned council. Mr Santoro showed up late and immediately commenced to talk about his two weeks in Cancun, to someone who he should've had the presence of mind to know wasn't going to be affording similar trips any time soon. If he had dedicated half as much attention to the details of my case as he did to telling me about his vacation, maybe he'd be getting a better review right now. I went out of my way to prepare Mr. Santoro every week for the shenanigans that my ex was pulling. She is a borderline personality case and while her behavior is hostile, it is also predictable. Every week I informed Mr. Santoro of the obstacles she was manufacturing to prevent my access and every week he acted surprised, like it was the first time he heard any of it. He would wait til the last possible moment to address her behavior with her lawyer and his lack of action cost me access to my son on multiple occasions. Finally, the week of my son's birthday, my ex was in rare form. She wouldn't let me talk to my son on his birthday. She made him hang up on me the next day when I did get to talk to him and then she denied my pickup at the end of the week, causing me to get the police to come and enforce the order. I had been leaving Mr. Santoro messages as her actions unfolded and he would send the auto-reply text saying he would call me back as soon as he was available. Well, three days of this finally led me to leaving him a voicemail asking if he was "ever going to return a f*cking message." It was at this point that Mr. Santoro showed the first ounce of action in the 3 months I had known him. He went from being the tough Brooklyn guy who assured me his "30 years of experience dealing with this" would prevent her from pulling such stunts, to a pearl clutching debutante who was too offended by the F word to do his damn job. He filed a motion to be relieved as my attorney and I gladly let the judge know I was happy with that due to his sub par efforts. I should also note that about 3 weeks before this, I got a great new job that knocked me out of the assigned counsel program. I told Mr. Santoro this and hoped that the possibility of him getting paid would cause him to step his game up. I was wrong. I met with him the week before the dam finally broke and I thought he showed a base level of concern but I was wrong. I should have fired him then. Mr. Santoro exemplifies the worst stereotypes about lawyers. He is lazy, inattentive, pompous, condescending and only cares about himself. Don't hire him.

I was the defendant in a divorce case. Millane reviewed the facts, and told me I had a strong case in my favor. He kept this up for 2-1/2 years of depositions and filings to run up billable hours. On the night before trial, he suggested I settle out of court, He finally admitted that that while he had been practicing law for ten years, he had never taken a matrimonial case to trial. He always negotiated an out-of-court settlement. The trial was bi-furcated--grounds and financials. After we lost the grounds trail, he resigned and refused to represent me at all. In part because my now-ex was probably going to get all the marital assets and there would be no more dollars he could extract from me. He also refused to look at some duplicate billings I had discovered, claiming I still owed him more money. I would never recommend this lawyer to anyone.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
