I am grateful to Attorney Stock for everything she has done for me. Without her support and everything she has done under the MAVNI program, my dream of becoming an American will never be true. Her advice at every stage of the application process helped me get a US visa and successfully complete the citizenship naturalization process. I want to recommend her to all future applicants.

We hired Gregory to assist us with a disgruntled employee issue who was relieved of their position within our company. Gregory was awesome to work with, he was extremely professional, timely, accurate and knew just how to best handle our situation. He also helped us with another minor issue we needed legal assistance with and once he took over he had the problem resolved in record time! I would highly recommend Gregory to anyone who needs help understanding workplace labor laws or needs his expert legal representation, he is excellent at what he does and the best of all he is truly a nice and pleasant person to work with.

I contacted a law firm and asked for an in-person consultation, but they wanted me to pay a large fee for a phone consultation instead. Since when do we discuss legal matters over the phone? When I requested an in-person meeting, they sent me an email referring me to the Alaska Bar. I can’t help but feel that if my name were Paul Smith, the response would have been different.

I presented Mr. Postma with an extraordinarily complex case that was essentially 30 cases in one. To defend this case required him to develop a good working knowledge of a subject that requires years of study to really understand. He had about a month. He was able to prepare a superb brief and present the facts in a compelling way. He maintained his credibility and objectivity. I don't know the outcome of the case yet but I can say that I was well represented. I have worked with a variety of attorneys over the years and Mr. Postma was the best I have ever worked with.

I have to say, Mr. Postma's reviews are true. I fired my former attorney and had to find a new one. No one would take my case. Then Mr. Postma gave me a 30 minute consultation. He was suspicious of my reasons for firing my last lawyer but asked me to bring him some documents to verify what I was saying. He then took my case 2 weeks before trial. His cross examination of my wife was fabulous. He found some information on her that even I was not aware of. The judge granted me 50/50 shared parenting time and parental responsibilities, which my former attorney in Greenwood Village said was not likely. My former attorney made everything so complicated, but Mr. Postma simplified everything for the judge. I now realize I was sputtering whenever I talked about my wife's accusation, and Mr. Postma helped me realize this and helped my simplify was I was really upset about, which turned out to me something that surprised even me. He helped me calm down, helped me realize what was actually important at trial and what was not, and helped me simplify my own testimony at trial and during cross examination. Mr. Postma is personable and seems to have an actual real life example from his long experience as an attorney for what I was facing, how the judge would process the information, what my ex-wife's motivations were and how she would react at trial, and what the judge's likely decision would be. He is like a chess player who has thought out every possible move a dozen moves in advance. I can't say enough about this attorney.

Mr. Postma was very helpful. After days of calling many attorneys, courts, and police in different states with each of them giving us the run around with what we should do. He was able to give us the answers that we needed. Beyond helpful with all the information and advice he was able to give us over the phone.

We hired Patrick to represent us in a claim against a contractor who failed to perform the duties that we had given partial payment too. Patrick was extremely professional and kept us informed of the process and what we could expect to happen throughout the lawsuit. We ended up winning the case and it was due to the attention to detail and commitment from Patrick to our case.

Sam just did my custody agreement case. He was patient through the process, when there was a lot of back and forth and changing things. I had never done custody or anything to do with the courts before and was frazzled about it all, he walked me through everything and kept me on track. Told me all my options and possibilities. I am overall happy with and thankful for the work he has done and recommend him!

This review is long overdue. I know it will make Michael's day when she sees it <3. My CASES (yes plural) were complicated and Michaela and Anastasia handled all my mood swings like true champs. I endured two personal injury incidents within a short period of time. To make things even more complicated, I had preexisting conditions and I was a full time Uber driver. It wasn't easy getting all that was due to me but Michaela came through. There were moments that I lost hope. I'm grateful to this team for setting proper expectations with me so I didn't get my hopes too high. I would rather not expect something and be surprised, then to expect it and not get it. I ended up being pleasantly surprised. For me, my experience with Kelly and Canterbury reinforced the concept of "trust the process". I didn't always trust the process...but you should. Michaela is a fighter and I'm so grateful for her compassion and strength even when I had doubts and was not the easiest to work with. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!!!!

First off, Shortell Law LLC doesn’t even deserve 1 star. As a bystander for a family member that recently went through a legal child custody battle, Shortell Law falsely advertised their latest October 2024 “Big win”. The “facts” they presented in their case is so falsely obscured, it is blowing everyone (who’s been involved or has knowledge about the case) minds. If you are wanting to hire this law firm, I’d suggest finding one that doesn’t completely and bluntly lie about the actual facts. Our family has actual proof of the FACTS. This law firm is clearly wanting money no matter the cost or situation. Be prepared to be belittled and lied about if your case gets on their main website. All in all, we are very relieved of the outcome but we do not suggest this law firm.

Within 10-months (including unnecessary delays) Sarah finalized our case victoriously. Sarah is top notch and means business! Sarah and her team work swiftly, diligently, are very professional and communicate often. Above all, Sarah is a great listener and is passionate about family law. We retained MR. BUTLER yet he didn’t respond to a single email, return a single call and had a colleague appear at arraignment and bail hearing. We didn’t hear from the actual attorney we retained not one single time. When we talked to the associate he never knew about emails with the office staff regarding requests or assistance we had asked for and we were forced to retain another attorney who responds EVERYTIME we have a question himself. I sent correspondence requesting some of the retainer we paid be refunded to be told we signed a flat rate fee agreement and that Mr butler would be calling me ( he hasn’t) I strongly advice you to be very aware of who you’re actually retaining. I had recommended this attorney based on someone’s experience long ago but apparently that is no longer applicable. During the bail review the prosecutor didn’t oppose bail with a third party and we had provided all the third party information the office requested weeks prior and the attorney who appeared (Frances) didn’t even mention and allowed a 2 month out rescheduled court date when he could have provided that info that day! Inadequate would be a kind word. Thankfully we had held back some of the retainer or we would be out that too! The new attorney has done more in a week than this office did in 2 months and now the office staff has a nasty attitude towards us. After speaking with many others this seems to be the norm for this office now! RUN and find a different law group or you’ll pay for absolutely NOTHING! And I mean ALOT of money! It’s fraud and theft in my opinion! I’ll update this should they by chance decide to do the right thing until then I’ll leave this review on every platform I can find in hopes of saving someone else the grief this office has added onto our already horrific situation (false charges) as if we weren’t already enduring enough with that!

The Alaska Public Defender Agency does a great job considering its budgetary constraints. They provide more bang for the buck than private counsel, in my experience. The problems Jeremy Ward talks about are not problems with the Alaska Public Defender Agency. They are problems with our society and government as a whole, caused largely by the breakdown of morals and the extended family. Don't criticize the agency with their finger in the dike trying to hold off the overwhelming flood of dysfunctional people. Criticize what caused that flood. And DO something about it. Volunteer!

What a Government Lawyer Can Do for You

A government lawyer specializes in legal issues related to government policies, regulations, and disputes involving public entities. Whether you are a private individual, business, or government agency, a government lawyer provides expert guidance on navigating the complexities of government law. These attorneys handle cases ranging from constitutional law, administrative law, regulatory compliance, and government contracts to defending or challenging government actions.

Government lawyers help individuals and organizations understand their rights and obligations under the law, represent them in disputes with government agencies, and assist in matters of government contracting, procurement, or public policy.

When Should I Hire a Government Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a government lawyer in several situations involving government regulations, compliance, or disputes. Common reasons to hire a government lawyer include:

  • Government contracts and procurement: If you are bidding for or negotiating a contract with a government agency, a lawyer can help ensure compliance with federal, state, or local contracting rules.
  • Regulatory compliance: Businesses operating in highly regulated industries (e.g., healthcare, finance, environmental sectors) often need legal guidance to comply with government regulations and avoid penalties.
  • Government investigations: If you're being investigated by a government agency such as the IRS, SEC, or EPA, a government lawyer can help defend you against allegations or negotiate settlements.
  • Challenging government actions: If a government agency has denied a permit, license, or benefit, a lawyer can help you appeal or challenge the decision in court.
  • Constitutional and civil rights issues: If you believe your constitutional rights have been violated by a government entity, such as in cases involving free speech or discrimination, a government lawyer can help you seek justice.
  • Public policy or lobbying efforts: If you are involved in lobbying or advocating for policy changes at the local, state, or federal level, a government lawyer can provide legal advice on compliance with lobbying laws and strategies for effective advocacy.

Hiring a government lawyer early in the process can help you navigate complex legal frameworks and avoid costly mistakes when dealing with government-related legal issues.

What Does a Government Lawyer Do?

A government lawyer provides a wide range of services that cover interactions between individuals, businesses, and government entities. They can:

  • Assist with government contracts: Helping clients navigate procurement laws, drafting contracts, and resolving disputes related to government contracting.
  • Provide regulatory compliance advice: Offering guidance on meeting regulatory requirements for industries subject to federal, state, or local laws.
  • Handle administrative law matters: Representing clients before government agencies, such as appealing administrative decisions, applying for permits, or defending against regulatory enforcement actions.
  • Challenge or defend government actions: Representing clients in lawsuits involving government agencies, including constitutional challenges, civil rights violations, or disputes over government decisions.
  • Negotiate settlements with government entities: If a government agency is pursuing legal action against you or your business, a lawyer can negotiate settlements to avoid costly litigation.
  • Advocate for policy changes: Advising clients on legal strategies for influencing public policy, including lobbying and drafting legislation.
  • Litigate constitutional issues: Handling cases related to the Constitution, such as First Amendment rights, due process violations, or unlawful government actions.

How Are Government Lawyers Paid?

Government lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the nature of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: For ongoing legal matters, such as regulatory compliance or government contract disputes, lawyers may charge by the hour. Hourly rates can vary depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific services, such as drafting a government contract or filing an administrative appeal, some lawyers charge a flat fee.
  • Retainer: For clients who need ongoing legal support, such as businesses frequently interacting with government agencies, a lawyer may charge a retainer fee. This is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.
  • Contingency fee: In some cases involving litigation, such as civil rights violations, a lawyer may work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win or settle the case.

It’s important to discuss fee structures with your lawyer during the initial consultation to avoid surprises.

How Much Does a Government Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a government lawyer depends on the complexity of the legal issue, the lawyer's experience, and their fee structure. Here are some general cost estimates:

  • Hourly rates: Government lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For specific legal services, such as drafting a government contract, flat fees can range from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the nature of the service.
  • Retainer fees: A retainer for ongoing legal work with government agencies can range from $5,000 to $20,000 or more, depending on the scope and frequency of the work.
  • Contingency fees: In cases where a lawyer works on contingency, their fee is usually a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or damages awarded if the case is successful.

Be sure to get a clear estimate of costs during your consultation to ensure that you understand the fees associated with your case.

Top Questions to Ask a Government Lawyer

When hiring a government lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and skills needed for your specific situation. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What is your experience with government law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has substantial experience in handling cases or issues involving government agencies, regulatory compliance, or constitutional law.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services - whether by the hour, flat fee, retainer, or contingency fee - and request an estimate of costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your legal options and the likelihood of success based on your specific situation.
  4. How do you handle interactions with government agencies?
Ask about their approach to dealing with government entities and their experience with specific agencies relevant to your case (e.g., IRS, EPA, SEC).
  5. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Ask about their experience with similar cases and whether they have achieved favorable outcomes in the past.
  6. Who will handle my case?
Clarify whether the lawyer you are meeting with will personally handle your case or whether junior attorneys or paralegals will do most of the work.

How to Check the Credibility of a Government Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable government lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Review their professional experience: Look for specific experience in government-related legal issues, such as regulatory compliance, government contracts, or administrative law, on their website or professional profile.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Check online reviews and ratings on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s reputation and track record.
  • Ask for references: Request references from previous clients who have worked with the lawyer on government-related matters to understand their experience and effectiveness.
  • Check for membership in relevant organizations: Look for memberships in professional organizations such as the American Bar Association's Administrative Law Section or the National Institute of Government Procurement, which can indicate the lawyer’s focus on government law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with a government lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant information and documents. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Detailed description of your legal issue: Be prepared to explain your situation, whether it’s a regulatory compliance question, a government contract issue, or a dispute with a government agency.
  • Relevant documents: Bring any paperwork related to your case, such as contracts, permits, letters from government agencies, or notices of investigation.
  • A list of questions: Write down any questions you have about your case, including the legal process, potential outcomes, and costs.
  • Timeline of events: Provide a clear timeline of any relevant events, such as the issuance of government orders or interactions with government agencies.
  • Goals for the outcome: Be ready to discuss what you hope to achieve, whether it’s a favorable settlement, regulatory compliance, or overturning a government decision.

By being organized and prepared, you can help your lawyer understand your situation more quickly and give you the best legal advice moving forward.
