Although it was determined after Mr. Sakoda and I communicated by email that I would need Family Law representation for my legal situation, Mr. Sakoda was extremely helpful in offering me advice regarding a Family Trust, very quick to respond during our dialog and a compassionate person. I am sorry I will not be able to use his services to represent me. I would definitely recommend him to friends and family.

Mr. Richard Sakoda is a very hardworking individual that has one goal in mine, and that goal is keeping his clients satisfied going above and beyond the scope of work requirements to ensure all areas of your problems are satisfied. He is knowledgeable of the work he does, trustworthy, excellent communicator who keeps you informed at all times. He discusses all relevant factors about your case, gives you alternatives, and provides advice in making the best decision to your case. In our family experience, we have gone through three -(3) Lawyers, but we were not satisfied with their work we requested. We needed a legalized Will written to assure others won't have the ability to take away assets and properties that the deceased will leave to the appointed person/caretaker. But each Laywer we went to and paid to write the Will, were not exactly how we explained to them and therefore the Will needed to be rewritten. Instead of having the same Lawyer to redo the Will, we seek another Lawyer. A friend recommended Mr. Richard Sakoda. We met with him, asked questions and he were straight-forward with his answers. We told him our situation and what we wanted done. He immediately commenced working on the issue that we wanted fixed of which previous Lawyers we went to did not do unless we paid additional fee. Mr. Sakoda accomplished the Will the way we exactly wanted it to be done and completed it in a timely manner. We are now releived that no one; especially other family members, will not be able to intrude and be disruptive in making every effort to take-away or be a part owner of properties and assets that the deceased leave behind to the appointed person. Mr. Sakoda is a good listener with unique combination of intuitive and analytical abilities. I highly recommend Mr. Sakoda to any person seeking assistance in writting a legalized Will as he is a professional and one of the best Lawyers that provides satisfaction guarantee to his clients.

When we got to Hawaii we are unsure how to proceed with immigration for our two adopted boys. Maile and Stella helped us out so much, they literally did everything for us possible. It was a nerve racking time in our life, fast forward two-years and everything is complete and our boys are now US Citizens. For two-years they cared for our family like we were there own family. No question about it, we went to the right people.

I reached out to Hirota and Associates in December 2015 after receiving a denial for my Green Card application (through marriage). My husband and I had filled out the initial paper work ourselves and had attended the interviews before being denied. I was distraught and terrified when I thought my family would be broken apart but Maile and the team immediately took on my case, working so hard to make sure that would not happen. This team of incredible women didn’t just help me resolve my case; they did it in under a year, for an excellent price and also with care, attention and compassion for myself and my family. Maile is honest, transparent and in constant contact at vital times. Because of Hirota and Associates my family are still together. Mahalo so much for your support Maile and Co.

In only one conversation I learned the passion Mr. Tipon has for defending accused or investigated persons. He didn’t have to take the time he did with me, and I’m grateful he did. It was a comfort, like that from an old friend; to learn a little more about the law relieved my crippling fear that the accused was going to be denied a simple choice: Here, or there? This case means the world to the person who is loved by his family who wants the best always, by his friends (who have become as close as his family), and by me. Mr. Tipon took time to talk, to understand concern, and to inform and inquire. He’s a listener is simply the best. I’d like to get to know him as much as he gets to know his clients. And it would be good to better understand the plight of people who become less fortunate by subjection to a system they may not understand, because it has not been maintained in the spirit of welcoming individuals seeking the opportunity of a new place! The accused is and was a blessing. Then one day they wake to find it all potentially ripped away? Not just. Every person should have the right to self determination, which we take for granted. I was raised to know this country in a time where those ideals were lauded and applauded. The poem on the formerly welcoming Ellis Island reads, “Send us your tired, hungry, poor, those tempest tossed weary travelers” (can’t be sure about the exact wording, but hope I have captured the spirit) I would add “and let them stay if they so choose, and let’s make it better, together!” -Kenneth Rice II

Very unfair and unprofessional people! Mr Rego told me he would take on my WC case two months ago but I would have to advocate for myself and once I did the things he told me to do give him a call back. Well I did just that today and he decided to say he never told me he would take my case in July, August or September… huh??? What are you talking about…? He said his notes say he would give me advice not take my case. Guess what this was a lesson well learned Moving forward everything must be in writing because this made absolutely no sense!!! Along with he raising his voice and wouldn’t allow me to speak and telling him what I wrote down when we spoke 2 months ago.

I appreciate his approach as it’s geared towards understanding what your concerns are and educating you on his services before requesting payment. I wish I could provide higher than a five-star rating for Nathan. He is an exceptional lawyer. My family spent 3 years wrapped up with another law firm, caught in an administrative stalemate. I called around to find different lawyers (made 7 separate phone calls). Only 3 law firms called me back, and 2 of them wanted to charge exorbitant rates for what we needed. Nathan called back quickly and provided a detailed, step-by-step explanation of what was needed to complete our property conveyance and handle back taxes/administrative filing. He even encouraged us to take the necessary steps ourselves if we felt comfortable. Nathan took on our case, even though other firms told us it wasn't worth their time - in addition, Nathan handled this work promptly, professionally, and with a great sense of humor and patience. Nathan accomplished in 3 weeks what another firm couldn't complete in 3 years. Thank you to Nathan for singularly stellar service and for effective work at an unbeatable price.

Jim handled a difficult immigration case and my divorce. He is direct and straight to the point, yet funny! His easy-going nature really put me at ease, especially since i was already going through a really tough time. Everyone at the immigration office knows him and seems to like him too. I could have fought my ex-husband on the divorce but Jim's sage advice kept us on civil terms, which cost me a lot less money. I have referred several friends to him and everyone came out on top. Really glad i found someone experienced, knowledgeable, and hilarious to boot.

Taylor once served as my lawyer. About six years ago, my husband and I sought his expertise during our marriage immigration process. Taylor provided invaluable professional advice, ensuring a seamless transition for me to the United States. When I arrived, Taylor didn't just meet with us; he accompanied me to every interview. Despite the unique challenges of our situation, which led to an initial unsuccessful application, Taylor was quick. He promptly spearheaded a second application and generously covered our associated fees. Throughout the immigration ordeal, he consistently demonstrated professionalism, patience, and thoroughness. He wasn't just a lawyer; he felt like a close friend. Our financial situation could have been better then, leading to times when we struggled with prompt payments. Yet, Taylor never held it against us, continuing to support us with kindness and professionalism. Thanks to his persistent efforts, I was granted my green card. During the green card application process, my husband was detained for drunk driving—a devastating blow, especially since I had just given birth. Though this issue was outside Taylor's professional purview, he extended an offer from his heart: he invited me to stay with his family in Hawaii. I didn't accept, but the depth of his generosity is something I'll never forget. Taylor is a big blessing to our family; his unwavering support helped me find my strength. When I first came to the United States, I had a very tough period due to the language obstacle, but Taylor gave me great encouragement, and now I am a Chinese professor at a university. My husband and I had a second daughter two years ago. Our gratitude for Taylor is boundless; he often graces our conversations with fond memories.

We contacted Atty. Rhoda Alvarez seeking help in assisting our niece in obtaining a green card. The answers and options she gave us were vague and not at all helpful. One thing she suggested was that we find someone to marry her. I don't think that this is even remotely legal and not a route we would pursue. The fee we paid for a Zoom consultation was high and not worth 1/4 of what we paid. Having dealt with really competent Attorneys in the past, this was a letdown.

What an Immigration Lawyer Can Do for You

An immigration lawyer specializes in helping individuals, families, and businesses navigate the complex immigration process. These lawyers provide legal guidance on various immigration matters, such as obtaining visas, gaining permanent residency (green cards), applying for citizenship, and defending clients in deportation or removal proceedings. Immigration lawyers also assist with employment-based immigration, asylum applications, and resolving issues related to visas or immigration status.

Whether you're trying to immigrate to the U.S., facing deportation, or sponsoring an employee or family member for a visa, an immigration lawyer can help you understand your legal options and navigate the often complicated legal system.

When Should I Hire an Immigration Lawyer?

Hiring an immigration lawyer is beneficial in many situations where you are dealing with U.S. immigration laws, whether for personal or business reasons. Common reasons to hire an immigration lawyer include:

  • Visa applications: If you need assistance applying for a visa, whether it's a work visa (H-1B), student visa (F-1), or tourist visa (B-1/B-2), a lawyer can help ensure the application is properly completed and submitted.
  • Green card applications: If you're seeking permanent residency, an immigration lawyer can guide you through the process, whether through family sponsorship, employment, or the Diversity Visa (lottery) program.
  • Deportation or removal defense: If you’re facing deportation or removal from the U.S., a lawyer can defend your case in immigration court and seek to prevent removal.
  • Asylum applications: If you’re seeking asylum due to persecution or fear of persecution in your home country, a lawyer can help you prepare a strong case and file for asylum.
  • Family reunification: If you're a U.S. citizen or permanent resident looking to bring family members to the U.S., a lawyer can assist with the family sponsorship process.
  • Citizenship and naturalization: If you're ready to apply for U.S. citizenship, a lawyer can help you navigate the naturalization process and ensure you meet all the requirements.
  • Business immigration: If you're an employer seeking to hire foreign workers, a lawyer can assist with employment-based visas, labor certification, and compliance with immigration regulations.
  • Special immigration categories: Immigration lawyers also handle complex cases, such as visas for victims of human trafficking (T visa), crime victims (U visa), or those seeking Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

Hiring an immigration lawyer early in the process can help you avoid delays, errors, and possible denials due to incomplete or incorrect applications.

What Does an Immigration Lawyer Do?

An immigration lawyer provides a wide range of services to help clients with their immigration needs, whether personal or business-related. Their tasks often include:

  • Assisting with visa applications: Helping clients fill out and submit visa applications, ensuring all documentation is complete and accurate.
  • Filing for green cards and permanent residency: Guiding clients through the process of applying for a green card, including family-based, employment-based, or other forms of residency.
  • Defending against deportation or removal: Representing clients in immigration court who are facing deportation and working to prevent removal from the U.S.
  • Preparing asylum cases: Assisting clients in applying for asylum based on fear of persecution in their home country due to race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
  • Handling citizenship applications: Helping lawful permanent residents apply for naturalization and ensuring they meet all the legal requirements for U.S. citizenship.
  • Employment-based immigration: Assisting employers with the process of sponsoring foreign workers for temporary or permanent visas, including H-1B, L-1, and EB-1 through EB-5 visas.
  • Representation in immigration interviews: Preparing clients for immigration interviews and attending interviews at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offices.
  • Appealing denied applications: If a visa, green card, or citizenship application is denied, a lawyer can file appeals or motions to reopen or reconsider the case.

How Are Immigration Lawyers Paid?

Immigration lawyers generally charge for their services based on the type of immigration case and the complexity of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many immigration lawyers charge a flat fee for specific services, such as preparing a visa application, green card petition, or citizenship application. Flat fees help clients know upfront what the legal costs will be for a particular service.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex cases, such as deportation defense or appeals, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Retainer: For ongoing immigration matters, some clients may need to pay a retainer, which is an upfront payment billed against as the lawyer works on the case.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some immigration lawyers or nonprofit organizations may offer free or low-cost services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in asylum or humanitarian cases.

It’s essential to discuss the fee structure with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand the costs and payment arrangements.

How Much Does an Immigration Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an immigration lawyer varies based on the type of legal service required, the lawyer's experience, and the complexity of the case. General cost estimates include:

  • Visa applications: For help with visa applications (e.g., H-1B, L-1, F-1), legal fees may range from $2,000 to $7,500, depending on the complexity and the type of visa.
  • Green card applications: Fees for family-based or employment-based green card applications typically range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on the case.
  • Deportation defense: For defending clients in removal proceedings, costs can range from $5,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and how long the case takes.
  • Asylum cases: Asylum applications may range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on whether the case is defensive (in removal proceedings) or affirmative (not in removal proceedings).
  • Citizenship applications: Legal fees for filing a naturalization application usually range from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s immigration history.
  • Business immigration services: Fees for assisting businesses with employment-based visas (such as H-1B or EB-5 visas) often range from $3,000 to $10,000 or more.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of costs and fee arrangements before proceeding with legal services.

Top Questions to Ask an Immigration Lawyer

Before hiring an immigration lawyer, it's essential to ask questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your case effectively. Important questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with immigration cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s family-based immigration, employment visas, or asylum.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee, hourly rate, or retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case and the potential outcomes, including any challenges you might face.
  4. How long will the process take?
Immigration cases can take time, so ask how long it may take to process your application or resolve your legal issue.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of your case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents do I need to provide?
Ask the lawyer about the documentation required to support your case, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, or employment contracts.

How to Check the Credibility of an Immigration Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable immigration lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their state bar status: Confirm with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific immigration law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in immigration law and have experience handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their ability to handle immigration cases.
  • Check for industry affiliations: Membership in organizations like the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) can indicate the lawyer’s expertise and commitment to immigration law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an immigration lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Passport and immigration documents: Bring your passport, visa, and any documents related to your current immigration status.
  • Family documents: If you're applying for a family-based visa or green card, bring marriage certificates, birth certificates, and proof of family relationships.
  • Employment information: For employment-based visas, provide your employment contract, offer letter, or other documentation of your job.
  • Criminal records (if applicable): If you have any criminal history, bring copies of court records and other relevant documents.
  • Timeline of events: Provide a clear timeline of any prior immigration applications, visas, or issues with immigration authorities.
  • List of questions: Prepare any questions you have about your immigration case, the process, costs, and the likelihood of success.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer understand your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
