Living in rural Northern New York, I could find no lawyer for 400 miles to handle a sticky copyright case. Lawyer Match took me to Colorado and Paul Dunlap serendipitously. His half hour free consultation was witty, learned and sympathetic. I hired him sight unseen, or more accurately, I signed on as his assistant. He directed me to various web sites to sleuth out records to feed into his assessments, bringing the client into the heart of the matter, and controlling the hourly fees. I learned a lot about probate, copyright filings and law. Most significantly he became the silent third party overlooking correspondence between myself and a recalcitrant agent, coaching my questions and sifting responses, until a strategy for success became clear. It was an emotional conclusion, since many times during the process I despaired.. All the time in emails and on phone calls he was friendly, sympathetic, sharp eyed. He was the man in the client's corner over a thousand miles away. The intricacies of the law he's mastered remain baffling to me. How he got the rabbit out of the hat seems magic. You're not going to find a better lawyer no matter where you live.

Mr. Furtado was instrumental in our successful resolution of a large hail damage claim against the insurance company. He was extremely knowledgeable and his advice and strategy was absolutely client focused. His main objective was to get our damages covered. Most attorneys in this field seem to be focused on getting a reasonable settlement with with as little effort as possible. Others we interviewed were not as passionate or knowledgeable and were clearly focused on a quick settlement and little effort on their part. David understood our real need to get a new roof etc and kept this at the forefront and was willing to keep fighting until we were satisfied. Next time I will skip the public adjuster and go straight to David Furtado's firm.

David helped me with a domestic violence case that was complicated by exaggerated claims from the victim. My desired outcome was a deferred judgement which was not happening as long as the court had reason not to. David used extensive knowledge of procedural motions and the prosecution to gain victory after many months of work.
It was costly. But I am convinced I could have paid much more or worse, ended up with a domestic violence conviction permanently on my record.

I met Michael first in 2012 while prepping a film we were shooting in Denver. At first he was kind enough to volunteer his time to help us get a tax rebate, which he successfully did. A few days prior to principal photography we ran into trouble with one of the financiers, which threatened to collapse the financing. To make a long story short, we officially hired him and he rectified the situation and forced the financier to fulfill his obligation and saved the production

Mike is a true professional! I hired him to oversee all my personal and business legal matters. He is thorough, knowledgable, reliable and easy to work with. I always felt he had my best interests in mind and trusted his advice. Though he handled several of my business contracts, one that specifically comes to mind was a client who kept changing his mind and adding or subtracting negotiation points. I was getting extremely confused and frustrated. Mike was able to calm me down and help see the negotiation process through to final contract. What made this even more memorable and appreciated was that he availed himself to me and the client all through the holiday time between Christmas and the new year because the client was at a time crunch to finalize the contract. Like doctors that won't make house calls anymore, finding that kind of customer service from an attorney is also, for most cases, a lost benefit. I have teamed with Gil on about a half dozen financial deals where the need was for the drafting of various transactional documentation, with some deals requiring extensive research and involvement with external vendors. I, as General Counsel, retained Mr. Lasater for the purpose of pursuing a claim against a faulty software product that didn't operate as offered. It was a complex case with a plethora of legal documents and issues of contract, choice of law, intellectual property, and generally litigation. His advice in the prepatory phase was honest, cost effective, no nonsense possibilities and issues. He became familiar with a large number of technical people on both sides, the technical issues of both hardware and software, some issues of securities and generally made my job simple. My vocabulary does not contain enough superlatives to describe Joe Kovarik, the patent attorney that I was lucky enough to hire in 2008. During this time, Mr. Kovarik has provided invaluable legal counsel, has been my most loyal advocate, has diplomatically steered me away from potential problems and has allowed me to be successful at the USPTO. During a conflict which I had with a large corporation, Joe took them on and soundly beat them. This was not just due to his brilliance at the time, but had a lot to do with the preparations he made years in advance where he was essentially prescient in recognizing a dishonest company. This has been my second attempt at obtaining the same patent. So, needless to say, I had really no idea what I was doing. I originally filed for my provisional patent with legalzoom.com (seemed like a good idea at the time) and soon realized that not only were the lawyers they used not even registered but I had set myself back about a year. Tera went above and beyond for me. After I thought I had done all my homework and considered myself "in the clear", not only was she able to find 2 previous "artworks" that had been submitted in the 90's with pretty much the same exact patent I had in mind (rendering my idea un-patentable), but she worked with me to elaborate on my patent so that mine became an even better product eligible for patentability.
Tera was very professional, knowledgable and, above all, HELPFUL. I don't know what I would have done without her. My guess is that my idea would have never actually come to fruition and I would have been spinning my own wheels for years considering how long it takes to actually obtain a patent.
I look forward to working with Tera further as this lengthy process unravels. I highly recommend Tera Smith. You will not regret it.
