I retained, Attorney Joel Huotari of WilliamsMcCarthy law firm, for what turned out to be a challenging and lengthy civil case. From our first meeting, he explained everything to me in terms I could easily understand and was always very responsive when I had questions. Joel is an exceptional attorney, who handled my legal matters with the professionalism, integrity, and responsiveness that attains results. He provided sound guidance and devised a strategy that ultimately ended in a positive outcome. He truly cared about my feelings and was very supportive during this emotional time. A kinder. more dedicated attorney will be hard to find, if not impossible. Joel is an attorney you can always depend on. I would highly recommend this firm, and more specifically, Attorney Joel M. Huotari, if you're looking for a superior litigation attorney who brings top-notch expertise to the table. My gratitude to him will last a lifetime!

Joel defended me in a defamation case which featured additional claims under the Illinois Right of Publicity Act, 765 ILCS 1075/1 and allegations of intentional infliction of emotional distress. He succeeded in getting the case dismissed, and won a ruling that the plaintiff committed which ruling was upheld on appeal.

Ren is an experienced, skilled, and compassionate attorney. He sucessfully represented me in a very complex and lengthy case. Where he worked tireslly to obtain an acquittal in a case that another prominent local criminal attorney told me could not be won. Additionally, as an Army Veteran he was uniquely well equipped to understand, empathize with and advocate for Veterans and Wounded Warriors like me. As I struggled with losing rights I had personally fought to defend. Thanks for all your great work Ren!

I have worked with Attorney Roxanne Sosnowski for almost 4 years on a professional basis. Attorney Sosnowski serves as our City's Municipal Attorney. She provides legal advice on a daily basis in a professional, knowledgeable, and courteous manner. She always has the best interest for her clients as she considers the law and how it relates to any matter that the city has. Attorney Sosnowski has great understanding and knowledge of the law. If there is any matter she is not familiar with she will do the research to research the legal answer. I have also come to know her personally, and cannot speak enough of her genuine care and compassion-not only for the city, but also for people in general. I would highly recommend her for any legal matter.

I was both very pleased and honored that Jody took my case that involved a very specific and highly litigated Illinois franchise rights case. Her understanding of a very complicated Illinois Franchise Case Law concerning a Bakery distributorship, proved valuble in a Reverse/ Remand decision at the Illinois Appellate Court level. Her team of experts at the Rockford, Ill law firm of Barrick, Switzer,Long,Balsley & Van Evera proved priceless in my civil litigation lawsuit.

I had him for a case involving DCFS. I was a very long drawn out case. Through it all he was by my family's side and doing everything he could. The case lasted over two years. I might not have always took his advice or listened, but he still did everything he could to get my family back together. He is an awesome man with a big heart. At the time I didn't always think so, but over time and working with other attorneys I've learned that he really is a great lawyer. He knew we didn't have a lot of money so he even worked on the retainer and payments after. I seriously wish they could all have even half his kindness and desire to do the best for the client.

Terrible experience with attorney Jim Rodriguez. Used him a few years back for help on purchasing my home and ensuring all the private party purchase documents were in order. My home was supposed to be split off of a larger plot, and currently I’m paying taxes on 65 additional acres and it’s been going on for years. The issue with Jim specifically is not only can he not complete the separation of the additional acreage from my plot and get the deed in my name years later, but that he chooses to ignore emails and phone calls regarding it. I’ll be hiring another attorney to finish the process, and also hire an attorney to recoup my fees paid to Jim. Very unprofessional.

I would HIGHLY recommend Crow Law, LLC to anyone in the Winnebago or Boone County area for representation in a divorce. Adrian, Lesley, and Jennifer were amazing to work with. They were meticulous, organized, prepared, knowledgeable, thorough, strategic, and not afraid of the several large firms my ex had at his disposal in the divorce. Crow Law, LLC was the third attorney I used in the 20 month long case. The second firm I used was a very large, very high priced firm in downtown Chicago who supposedly specialized in Woman’s domestic abuse. I thought by hiring a large firm that claimed to represent women better in divorce, I would get better results…but it was the opposite. They basically told me I had no options and I was out of luck because the prenup I signed 5 days prior to my marriage was so restrictive. The attorneys were rude, always talked over me, rambled on forever about other cases they worked on to try to prove their point with me, & never paused long enough to let me respond or ask questions. They basically TOLD me what was going to happen & would end every statement with a known sales assumptive close tactic “wouldn’t you agree?” in order to try to get me to agree with what they wanted to do. I wanted to go to trial & gave them the $10,000 additional retainer they mentioned I would need to give them…but once I did, one of the partners called me to say he would not take it to trial because I would lose & get none of what I was asking for. I hired Crow Law, LLC after that and I DID end up getting several things that the Chicago attorney told me I would never get, and it never even went to trial. They convinced the judge to rule in my favor on several high ticket items in pretrial talks. I would not have ended up with that additional settlement had I stayed with the large Chicago firm. Crow Law, LLC fought hard for me & my case was very complex. They were friendly and kept my worries at bay. I never had to show up to court or on Zoom once in 20 months. They handled it all remotely, as I live in Florida, now. Highly, highly recommend them.🙏

Best attorney around. I've never had to go through court before and knew nothing about anything. Austin really helped explain things to me and I felt like he really cared about my case and things going on. He's good at planning for future out comes and possibilities that may arise. Communication is very fluid. I have nothing but respect and love for all that he has done for me. He deserves a vacation because man he does a lot while also doing a very amazing and thorough job. I had a wonderful experience with austin and I hope others feel the same and if I have any other cases in Illinois he will always be my go to! ❤️

Just go in for a consultation and you'll realize that he will take your case personally and fight for your satisfaction as his client. Going through another company, I was referred to Black and Jones for my SSDI case. The first phone call I had was just a consultation with a lawyer at the firm. I will be taking my business elsewhere. I did not appreciate the condescending tone and the scoffs I could clearly hear while I was answering questions. Also, was ASKED to send info to a specific email to which my email was DENIED BY THE COMPANY per the email from Yahoo mailer. Then I sent an email through the inquiries email on the website, to which I have yet to receive a response. Lawyers exist because we non social paths don't know the law, maybe try to pretend to care just a little bit, or at least treat a potential client with some respect. Find another place to do business. EDIT: It gets even better! They have zero information about my case and send me a letter claiming they have reviewed my case. If they are looking at the current case on file with SSI, they have incorrect information. That's what happens when people don't actually do thier job.

At first I was nervous. I had a really big court date coming up for an order of protection that had nothing but frivolous accusations in it. When a situation like this, it was devastating at least!! About a week before I got a call from my attorney James we went over the case step-by-step Walking into trial 2 days ago Order protection that would keep me From my child for two years at least!! I walked innocent man as I should have. The accusations in the order were completely false and was able to come up with a defense for trial that was able to adequately show this to the judge without any doubt in his mind Before dismissing this Frivolous order!! Thank you, Attorney Zuba

I would give her zero stars but had to give 1. She is 1 sided and cares only about money. She is not about what is best for the children. We had her from 2018 to 2024. She came to our home 1 time and met with her twice. Was supposed to have a phone appointment with her but she never called us at the scheduled time. We Called her office and her assistant said Mrs. Erin tried to call us, which we had the phone in hand and we had no missed voicemail. So she lies and she lies in court. Her billing is a joke so make sure to check your billing! SHE NEVER returns your calls and can never talk to her only her assistant. It's been hell having her. So if you are appointed her for your GAL ask for a new one asap!! She destroys family's and cares more about the money instead of the best interest of the children. Aweful experience with her.

$3,500 dollars down the drain from a lack of communication, false promises, and excuses of why it took 4.5 months to write a motion/petition to modify parental allocation which oddly referred to me as the mother (she/her) in the language. I switched counsel because of no movement and had $200 left from my retainer which was never reimbursed even after calling the firm’s office asking for payment. Moreover, she was unprepared for court and got talked over by the other party’s lawyer. I got the results I was looking for elsewhere.

What a Litigation Lawyer Can Do for You

A litigation lawyer specializes in representing individuals, businesses, or organizations involved in legal disputes. Whether you're the one filing a lawsuit or you're being sued, a litigation attorney will advocate on your behalf throughout the entire legal process. Their goal is to resolve disputes, either through negotiation, settlement, or trial. Litigation lawyers can help with a wide range of disputes, including contract disagreements, real estate issues, employment disputes, personal injury claims, and more.

Litigation lawyers provide strategic legal advice and manage all aspects of your case, from filing motions to representing you in court, ensuring that your rights are protected and that you have the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome.

When Should I Hire a Litigation Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a litigation lawyer if you're involved in a legal dispute that you cannot resolve on your own. Common situations include:

  • Breach of contract disputes: If a party to a contract fails to fulfill their obligations, a litigation lawyer can help you seek damages or enforce the agreement.
  • Business disputes: Litigation lawyers can represent you in cases of partnership disagreements, intellectual property disputes, or business fraud.
  • Employment disputes: If you're facing issues like wrongful termination, workplace discrimination, or wage disputes, a litigation lawyer can help resolve these matters through negotiation or court action.
  • Personal injury claims: If you've been injured due to someone else's negligence and are seeking compensation, a litigation attorney can help you pursue your case.
  • Real estate or property disputes: When there are conflicts over property ownership, boundary issues, or lease agreements, a litigation lawyer can assist in resolving the dispute.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process is beneficial, especially if a lawsuit seems imminent or you have already been served with legal documents.

What Does a Litigation Lawyer Do?

A litigation lawyer handles all aspects of your case, from the initial investigation to the trial and even the appeals process, if necessary. Their role includes:

  • Case assessment and investigation: Analyzing the facts of your case and advising whether it’s worth pursuing or defending.
  • Pleadings and motions: Drafting and filing documents to initiate or respond to a lawsuit, including complaints, motions to dismiss, and answers.
  • Discovery: Gathering evidence, including depositions, interrogatories, and document requests, to build your case.
  • Negotiations and settlement discussions: Attempting to resolve disputes through mediation, arbitration, or settlement talks before going to trial.
  • Trial representation: Presenting your case in court, examining witnesses, introducing evidence, and making legal arguments before a judge or jury.
  • Appeals: If necessary, filing appeals to challenge or defend the outcome of the trial.

Litigation lawyers are also skilled negotiators and often work to resolve disputes outside of court to save time, money, and stress for their clients.

How Are Litigation Lawyers Paid?

Litigation lawyers typically use a variety of fee structures depending on the type of case, the complexity of the legal matter, and the financial circumstances of the client. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Many litigation attorneys charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and geographic location.
  • Flat fees: For specific, predictable legal tasks (such as filing a motion), lawyers may offer a flat fee.
  • Contingency fees: In personal injury or other cases where you seek damages, a lawyer may work on a contingency basis, taking a percentage of the settlement or award if you win.
  • Retainer: Some clients pay a retainer fee upfront to secure ongoing legal services. The lawyer then bills against this retainer as work is done.

The exact structure should be discussed in the initial consultation to ensure you understand how and when you'll be charged.

How Much Does a Litigation Lawyer Cost?

The cost of a litigation lawyer varies significantly depending on the nature of the dispute and the lawyer’s experience. Factors affecting the cost include:

  • The complexity of the case: More complex litigation involving extensive discovery, expert witnesses, or multi-party suits typically costs more.
  • Time spent: Litigation cases can be time-consuming, especially if they go to trial. The longer the case, the higher the legal fees.
  • Type of fee arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $200 to over $1,000 per hour, depending on the lawyer’s reputation and location. Contingency fees generally range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or award.
  • Stage of litigation: Cases that settle early in the process are often less expensive than those that proceed to trial or appeal.

It’s crucial to ask about cost estimates during your initial consultation to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Litigation Lawyer

Before hiring a litigation lawyer, it's essential to ask key questions to ensure you're choosing the right representation:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Ensure that the lawyer has experience handling your specific type of dispute, whether it's a contract issue, personal injury, or business matter.
  2. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case's strengths, weaknesses, and the likelihood of success.
  3. What is your fee structure?
Clarify how you'll be charged, whether by the hour, a flat fee, or on a contingency basis.
  4. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it's hard to predict, an experienced lawyer can give you a rough estimate based on similar cases.
  5. How often do you settle cases versus going to trial?
Some lawyers are more inclined to settle, while others may be more experienced in the courtroom. It’s important to understand their strategy.
  6. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Some lawyers prefer aggressive litigation, while others focus on settlement or mediation. Choose one whose approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of a Litigation Lawyer

To verify a litigation lawyer’s credibility, consider the following steps:

  • Check bar association records: Ensure the lawyer is in good standing with the state bar and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and track record.
  • Look for litigation experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they have handled cases like yours and have a record of success.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer to provide references from past clients who can speak to their effectiveness and approach.
  • Research their trial experience: If your case is likely to go to trial, ensure the lawyer has a history of courtroom success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make your first consultation with a litigation lawyer productive, you should prepare the following:

  • A clear outline of the dispute: Provide a timeline and key details about the legal issue you're facing.
  • Any relevant documents: Bring contracts, emails, letters, or any other documentation that pertains to the case.
  • A list of key players: Provide the names of individuals or companies involved in the dispute.
  • Questions about fees and the litigation process: Make sure you understand how the lawyer plans to approach your case and how you will be charged.
  • Your goals and expectations: Be clear about what outcome you're hoping for, whether it's a settlement, compensation, or another resolution.

By coming prepared, you can ensure that your initial meeting with the lawyer is both efficient and insightful, giving you a better sense of how to proceed with your case.
