I came to Julianne with limited knowledge on how the Family Court system works after having a less-than-stellar experience with another attorney. From the first email/phone call to the final hearing, I was comfortable, secure, and certain that she had the experience and knowledge to get me from point A to point B. Every question was answered, no matter how insignificant, and always in a timely manner. She, and her staff, made sure that I was well aware of every step that was taken and that I understood every step along the way. I could not have asked for better representation.

Julianne Stokes was very knowledgeable about how to best handle different aspects of a separation agreement and a divorce but also had reliable recommendations of other professionals for further opinions in different fields. The way the entire process was handled on a business and personal level was of the highest integrity and compassion.

Having someone go the extra mile, when I wasn’t able to, made me feel much better about my involvement and my responsibilities related to a foreclosure matter against a series of large banks I was handling for more than 5 years. Ms. Gaddy’s high standards and attention to detail made the process and result something I can look back on happy that I was involved. I felt lucky to find someone who wasn’t content with knowing more than me she wanted to know more than all the experts involved and the Judge’s order indicates that she did. It was a tremendous relief to know that we shared the same goal for the result of the case. I looked like a hero when it could have gone a very different way. I regularly conduct business with people and I try not to get upset when someone values their payment over their performance but I truly enjoy when someone values their performance above all. Thank you Susan for making this the foreclosure equivalent of David VS Goliath instead of the basketball equivalent of Michael Jordan VS Damian Falcone.

Ms. Gaddy took real concern for my situation from the initial consultation forward. She laid out what was needed, cost, possible outcomes, contingency plans and probable outcomes in a clear and concise manner. I retained Ms. Gaddy late in the process as I was blindsided by a foreclosure hearing on my mother’s home. Ms. Gaddy dropped weekend plans writing answers, motions, and collecting information (all that legal stuff only lawyers know) to halt the proceedings. Her keen knowledge of South Carolina foreclosures and her experience with the complexities of the process were clearly evident as the tables turned after our first court hearing. I can't imagine going through it without Ms. Gaddy.

We contacted Mr. Milligan for assistance in a situation which occurred with our daughter at college. She was extremely reluctant to have assistance as most teens are, but after working with him, she confessed she was so glad he was there. Mr. Milligan was kind and compassionate while being very honest and realistic about the situation. We would definitely recommend Mr. Milligan to anyone needing legal assistance.

After my kids had been taken away from me and alienated from me, I was beginning to lose faith that I would ever see my kids again. Then in 2021, I found myself facing DSS regarding made up allegations of abuse fabricated by my ex-wife. This office not only handled my case with DSS, they also helped me regain custody of my 4 children (some of whom had been allinated from me for over 7 years). My personal thanks goes out to Douglas Barker, Daryn Barker, and Andrew Brener. This mericle would not have been possible without them.

Should not be allowed to practice family law based on personal experience. Ryan will tell you what you want to hear to get your money and then tell you something totally different after he gets your deposit money…. BEWARE!!! Ryan and his practices lack of attention to detail is appalling. First year in I discovered the modification I agreed to for 1 holiday did not make it into the final documents. Time sharing is written incorrectly for what was previously agreed to. Never let his firm write a dollar value for retirement assets because you will be responsible for the loses of those accounts and his firm will not back you up. 3 years after my divorce I am forced to take out a personal loan to pay for a divorce settlement that was supposed to come from my retirement accounts. Instead of 50/50 asset disbursement I am now forced to pay out of pocket for his firms lack of ability to represent the value of my pension retirement account. The agreement was written so poorly the QDRO attorney hired to handle retirement disbursement couldn’t even do their job because his firm did not write the agreement correctly. If you want to be haunted by a divorce decree hire Shwartz law firm because I can assure you that’s what will happen to you. Ryan will also admit to his mistakes but cares less about how you have to pay for his mistakes. If only I could give zero stars.

She is an amazing lawyer thus far. She works fast and is very understanding and works with you. She understands that things happen and this life ain’t easy and most importantly understands that you don’t have a money tree in your back yard. I will be updating later. This guy is a joker. I paid him $2500 dollars and never heard anything for three days so I told them I wanted my money back and was firing him. They didn't send me money as I paid online and said they were going to send me a check and I told them I was in Florida. I didn't get home for weeks later and then cashed their check. They stopped payment on the check because of my online dispute. It has been over 60 days I still don't have my money, my bank doesn't respond so I filed a compliant with the bar. If you want to lose your money hire this guy he's a winner!

Mr. Barker is a fantastic attorney! I cannot imagine having a better experience with my unpleasant divorce. He is confident, assertive, and has a strong presence in the courtroom (and it doesn't hurt that he is always in a well-fitting suit and has crazy good posture). My divorce was final about nine months ago and I still do not understand how I walked away in good shape! I was absolutely terrified of my husband and of the divorce process--I am fairly young, in school full-time, and my ex is not kind to say the least--but Mr. Barker walked me through the entire thing with compassion and wisdom. I genuinely felt that he listened to everything I said and fought for what I wanted and what was best for me. He was quick to return my calls if I had to leave a voicemail and always answered all of my questions (even those that were probably irrational). Bonus: I never ever felt like he was talking down to me or over my head. My ex-husband is nasty and spiteful, and Mr. Barker advocated for me in such a way that my ex actually played relatively nice AND he got me a good deal of money when I was expecting absolutely nothing! I know he got me more than what I should have gotten, and I am certain that this only happened because Mr. Barker was dedicated to my case and fought hard for me. His solutions were creative and realistic, and seriously he was so incredibly kind to me throughout the entire process!

What a Mediation Lawyer Can Do for You

A mediation lawyer specializes in resolving disputes outside of the courtroom through a process called mediation. Mediation involves a neutral third-party mediator who helps the disputing parties reach a mutually acceptable agreement. Mediation lawyers can represent clients in various matters, including divorce, business disputes, employment conflicts, contract issues, personal injury claims, and more.

Unlike litigation, mediation is a less adversarial and more cost-effective way to settle disputes, often leading to faster resolutions and preserving relationships between the parties involved.

When Should I Hire a Mediation Lawyer?

Consider hiring a mediation lawyer when you’re involved in a dispute and want to avoid the time, expense, and stress of going to court. Common reasons to hire a mediation lawyer include:

  • Divorce or child custody disputes: A mediation lawyer can help you reach a fair settlement on issues like property division, alimony, and parenting arrangements without going to court.
  • Business or contract disputes: For disagreements such as contract disputes, partnership conflicts, or intellectual property issues, a mediation lawyer can assist in resolving the matter through negotiation.
  • Employment disputes: Issues like wrongful termination, discrimination, or wage disputes can be addressed through mediation to find common ground and avoid lawsuits.
  • Personal injury cases: Mediation can help both parties agree on compensation in cases like car accidents or slip-and-fall claims without a prolonged court battle.
  • Property disputes: Disputes over property ownership, landlord-tenant issues, or boundary disagreements can be settled more amicably through mediation.
  • Family or inheritance disputes: Mediation can help resolve conflicts over wills or trusts without further dividing the family.

What Does a Mediation Lawyer Do?

A mediation lawyer provides a range of services to help clients resolve disputes through negotiation and mutual agreement. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Representing your interests: Acting as your advocate during mediation to ensure your rights are protected and you understand your legal options.
  • Preparing for mediation: Reviewing the facts of the case, gathering necessary documents, and advising you on potential resolutions.
  • Facilitating communication: Helping to facilitate open and constructive dialogue between parties to clarify points of contention.
  • Negotiating settlements: Assisting in negotiating fair and balanced settlement terms that are in your best interest.
  • Drafting mediation agreements: Preparing the official mediation agreement that outlines the terms of the settlement, which is often legally binding.
  • Avoiding litigation: Aiming to reach a settlement that eliminates the need for a court trial, saving time and resources for both parties.
  • Handling complex legal issues: Explaining the legal implications of various settlement terms in cases with complicated legal matters.

How Are Mediation Lawyers Paid?

Mediation lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the time involved. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Charging an hourly fee ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on experience and case complexity.
  • Flat fee: For simpler mediations, some lawyers may offer a flat fee covering all legal work involved in the process.
  • Retainer: In ongoing or complex cases, a retainer may be required as an upfront payment billed against as work progresses.

Discuss fees and payment structures with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand the cost of mediation services.

How Much Does a Mediation Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a mediation lawyer depends on several factors, including the case's complexity, the lawyer’s experience, and the time required to resolve the dispute. General cost estimates include:

  • Hourly rates: Typically between $150 and $500 per hour.
  • Flat fees: For simple mediations, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Total mediation costs: Can vary widely, from $2,000 to $10,000 for straightforward cases, up to $10,000 to $50,000 or more for complex disputes.

Always request a detailed cost estimate during your consultation to understand total expenses.

Top Questions to Ask a Mediation Lawyer

Before hiring a mediation lawyer, consider asking the following questions:

  1. What experience do you have with mediation cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in handling similar disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify the fee structure and request an estimate based on your specific case.
  3. What is the likelihood of resolving my case through mediation?
Seek an honest assessment of whether mediation is suitable for your situation.
  4. How long will the mediation process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline and number of sessions required.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Confirm who will manage your mediation and represent your interests.
  6. Can we pursue alternative dispute resolution (ADR) if necessary?
Ask about other forms of ADR, such as arbitration, if mediation doesn't resolve the conflict.

How to Check the Credibility of a Mediation Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable mediation lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Verify their bar status: Confirm with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed and has no disciplinary history.
  • Look for mediation experience: Review their website or professional profile for specialization in mediation and successful case histories.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Check platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google for client feedback.
  • Ask for references: Request references from past clients familiar with their mediation skills.
  • Check for certifications: Look for certifications from organizations like the American Arbitration Association (AAA) or the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To maximize the effectiveness of your initial meeting, bring the following:

  • Relevant documents: Any materials related to the dispute, such as contracts, emails, financial records, or court filings.
  • List of key issues: A detailed list of the main points of contention that need resolution.
  • Timeline of events: A chronological account of events leading up to the dispute, including prior resolution attempts.
  • Goals for the mediation: Be prepared to discuss your desired outcomes and areas where you're willing to compromise.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Any queries about the mediation process, fees, or their approach to dispute resolution.

Being well-prepared will help the lawyer assess your case effectively and provide the best possible advice for resolving your dispute through mediation.
