David handled my post-divorce case for six years mostly alone, opposing a team of two attorneys. He was able to deal with my doctors, forensic expert and more. David coped well with pressure and stress. I believe that his vision and ability to strategize were critical to obtaining a satisfactory outcome. Such pressure on him became impossible in the last year. We reached out to Lorri. She agreed to join, immediately started to study the case, assisted in brain-storming and prepared a quality trial testimony. Lorri's amiable personality was also a positive factor.

David helped me through a very difficult request to amend alimony. As soon as he took my case, I knew I was in good hands. He was very knowledgeable, and responsive. He also made sure that I knew my rights. Without him, I'm sure I would have lost my case. Instead, we had a very favorable response.

I have had the pleasure of having cases on opposite sides of Paula. While she is a formidable opponent, she is always collegial, courteous, and pleasant. A joy to have a case against her!

I contacted Paula based purely on the empathetic prose on her website - it was clear (and became even clearer later) that she understood the emotional dimensions of divorce as well as the hard legal and financial aspects. She is a lovely person as a human being, and as a lawyer is a no-nonsense, hard-hitting professional with the skills to bring together Massachusetts marital law with the psychological aspects of divorce. Due to the previous circumstances of my marriage, I was facing a twelve-year alimony liability that would have been financially disastrous for me, and would have prevented me from making a new start. Paula weaved together an astonishingly favorable settlement agreement that saved me tens of thousands of dollars, through courteous and efficient negotiations with the other side, even factoring in overseas jurisdictions, due to some of my assets being in Europe. She drafted depositions and related court documents that helped my case enormously, and represented my interests in the courtroom with aplomb; the courts were at the time Zoom-only due to COVID. Paula is always focused on outcomes, and can move between the big picture and the minutiae effortlessly and quickly. She will tell you the truth even if it’s bad news; I learned very quickly to trust her advice, because every time I did it resulted in another step towards a favorable outcome. Paula’s fees paid for themselves many times over, because of the remarkable settlement terms she brokered. I offer you my highest possible recommendation.

I found myself in need of a divorce lawyer. A friend recommended me their attorney. My divorce was not going to be typical. I had two boys that were 6 and 3 and their mom was not in a grounded place. I needed to have custody. I had to hold things together. It was not promising. Dads did not fair well in 1999 regarding custody. After a number of meetings it was clear that there was going to be trial. My attorney had a vacation planned and she had to bring in a partner. Enter Paula Berg. In under an hour Paula told me a few basic things that I could rely on when testifying at trial. She was honest, and that does not always mean what I want to hear. She told me that I had the right lawyer and that I had to do exactly what I was told, because we were a team. She explained that dads do not typically get custody, and she followed that up with "so what, I do not have a problem going against the odds". She is a kind, warm person, but that is not how I would describe her professionally. Paula is very no nonsense, direct, and she knows the law. She knows what judges need to do their job. That is worth reading twice. I have referred Paula to a few friends, which also resulted in success. Again, pick the right lawyer and do exactly what she says. She is the right lawyer.

Vicki Shemin and Jonathan Fields represented me for a simple divorce. It was a short-term marriage with no children. No discovery was done and we only appeared in Court twice, once for a motion hearing and again to present a full settlement agreement. The emergency motion was filed by my ex-husband and only necessary due to Attorney Shemim’s advice for me to change the locks to our former marital home. This was an action I wouldn’t have taken otherwise, ultimately escalated the amount of animosity in the case and the judge disapprovingly viewed as a form of self-help. Somehow this all amounted to attorney’s fees exceeding $82,000, the last $19,000 or so I am being repeatedly hounded for while several requests to discuss my billing continue to be ignored. Their paralegal has an hourly rate comparable to what many firms charge for a mid-level associate, and over billed for simple administrative tasks (i.e. two hours to divide the numbers on my biweekly paycheck in half). This was not a high-net worth case, there were no unusual or extraordinary issues to be dealt with, and the total amount billed for a matter that was resolved in less than a year actually exceeded the amount I received as a settlement. I would have ended up in a better position financially if I didn’t have counsel at all. I ended up negotiating the final terms of the settlement directly with my ex anyway. Perhaps this firm is great for those who are extremely wealthy where the total amount of legal fees is of no concern, but for anyone like myself, making a living as an RN, expect to pay top-notch prices while consistently being treated as a low-priority client. There are certainly better options out there.

I hired Vicki to represent me in a high conflict divorce. She was quickly able to understand my unique needs and guided me through some challenging moments with grace and creativity. Vicki set clear expectations during an emotional and confusing time, and helped me navigate the options that were available to me in order to bring the divorce to a close. I trust Vicki's instincts and was so pleased with the unwavering respect and integrity that she brought to the process; especially when we were contending with the opposite from the other party. I would definitely recommend Vicki to anyone looking for a collaborative lawyer.

Vicki recently represented me in a divorce and throughout the process she helped me to find my voice. I felt held, cared for and protected all the while knew she was fighting hard for me. Vicki has an amazing combination of kindness and toughness. By the end of the divorce I realized we’d become partners in trying to make sure both my ex and I had a fair and equitable outcome. I have endless respect and appreciation for Vicki, for facilitating and coaching me through this difficult chapter of my life.

While on a local news z podcast attorney Roman has blatantly lied, she while working the Read court case made a claim that another reporter was given a brand new Lexus by Karen Reads bro to pursued his follower’s along with a prospective jurors? By this Tim the state police etc. went through Kearneys bank statements etc and it was proved the reporter bought Veh. himself! Seeing the type of law she practices I now wonder if I’m going to use her on my own legal issues. Do ur research guys there are many many good law abiding lawyers in Massachusetts.

Jennifer comes in full throttle making unfounded & harmful accusations against the other side that may yield initial results, but as proceedings continue and trial arrives she loses stamina. She may prepare great motions, or, hold a thorough deposition, yet she lacks not her preparation, but being able to read the judge, courtroom and overall direction at that moment. I don't believe she understands her client's weaknesses is happy to take their money and simply focuses on their desires, I find this approach to be a recipe for a let down client. Of course talented but also lacking in being able to think on her feet. A GREAT attorney prepares but can also switch gears at crucial times as a result of the natural unpredictability in the court room-I found this element hugely lacking. She also struggles to rise to the respectful unspoken interaction with other members against the bar and shows emotions in what I believe to be an unprofessional way.

I'm deeply grateful for Jennifer's guidance throughout my not-quite-typical divorce process. I sought her out because of her family mediation experience, as I hoped my (now ex) husband would be amenable to mediation. Despite my ex not being willing to negotiate at any level, I still wanted to be represented by someone with a mediation mindset but who was also adept at litigation. I knew from the get-go that Jennifer was the one. She is highly skilled and professional, wise and clever, sensible and astute. Beyond her stellar legal dexterity, she’s incredibly kind and compassionate. Also, she’s part of a talented legal team, which I think is an asset (especially for trickier parts of a case where it’s helpful to have others to weigh in). Jennifer was there for me every step of the way, and I would recommend her in a heartbeat!

Jon Fields is an excellent divorce/family law attorney you can hire to help you with your divorce process. I came to Jon Fields and his college Vicki Shemin after becoming frustrated with the direction my divorce was taken. From the moment I hired the Law Offices of Jon Fields I felt at ease. I was impressed by intelligence, law knowledge, excellent legal expertise, strategic thinking and good judgment of these attorneys. In a week they had a deep understanding of my case, came up with effective strategies which eventually led to the best possible result of the case. Everyone in the Law Offices of Jon Fields was very helpful, organized, and professional. Throughout the divorce process, they fully informed me of what was going on with the case, explained everything completely and thoroughly. The office team demonstrated excellence in communications. My phone calls were always returned right away, emails responses were returned on the same day, often in 10-20 min. All Jon’s presentations in the court were excellent. He was confident, well-prepared, professional and extremely effective. He never over-promised and always delivered outstanding result. I am very helpful to John to navigate a very difficult time in my life. I would highly recommend Jon Fields and his team to anyone in need of a family law attorney. Irene T.

He and his paralegal put me at ease right from the start and were extremely responsive to my needs, both during and after the divorce. I felt completely confident in Jon's knowledge and abilities. He helped me navigate the very complex field of divorce and did a great job representing my interests and enabling us to resolve most of our issues before we got to court.

What a Mediation Lawyer Can Do for You

A mediation lawyer specializes in resolving disputes outside of the courtroom through a process called mediation. Mediation involves a neutral third-party mediator who helps the disputing parties reach a mutually acceptable agreement. Mediation lawyers can represent clients in various matters, including divorce, business disputes, employment conflicts, contract issues, personal injury claims, and more.

Unlike litigation, mediation is a less adversarial and more cost-effective way to settle disputes, often leading to faster resolutions and preserving relationships between the parties involved.

When Should I Hire a Mediation Lawyer?

Consider hiring a mediation lawyer when you’re involved in a dispute and want to avoid the time, expense, and stress of going to court. Common reasons to hire a mediation lawyer include:

  • Divorce or child custody disputes: A mediation lawyer can help you reach a fair settlement on issues like property division, alimony, and parenting arrangements without going to court.
  • Business or contract disputes: For disagreements such as contract disputes, partnership conflicts, or intellectual property issues, a mediation lawyer can assist in resolving the matter through negotiation.
  • Employment disputes: Issues like wrongful termination, discrimination, or wage disputes can be addressed through mediation to find common ground and avoid lawsuits.
  • Personal injury cases: Mediation can help both parties agree on compensation in cases like car accidents or slip-and-fall claims without a prolonged court battle.
  • Property disputes: Disputes over property ownership, landlord-tenant issues, or boundary disagreements can be settled more amicably through mediation.
  • Family or inheritance disputes: Mediation can help resolve conflicts over wills or trusts without further dividing the family.

What Does a Mediation Lawyer Do?

A mediation lawyer provides a range of services to help clients resolve disputes through negotiation and mutual agreement. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Representing your interests: Acting as your advocate during mediation to ensure your rights are protected and you understand your legal options.
  • Preparing for mediation: Reviewing the facts of the case, gathering necessary documents, and advising you on potential resolutions.
  • Facilitating communication: Helping to facilitate open and constructive dialogue between parties to clarify points of contention.
  • Negotiating settlements: Assisting in negotiating fair and balanced settlement terms that are in your best interest.
  • Drafting mediation agreements: Preparing the official mediation agreement that outlines the terms of the settlement, which is often legally binding.
  • Avoiding litigation: Aiming to reach a settlement that eliminates the need for a court trial, saving time and resources for both parties.
  • Handling complex legal issues: Explaining the legal implications of various settlement terms in cases with complicated legal matters.

How Are Mediation Lawyers Paid?

Mediation lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the time involved. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Charging an hourly fee ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on experience and case complexity.
  • Flat fee: For simpler mediations, some lawyers may offer a flat fee covering all legal work involved in the process.
  • Retainer: In ongoing or complex cases, a retainer may be required as an upfront payment billed against as work progresses.

Discuss fees and payment structures with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand the cost of mediation services.

How Much Does a Mediation Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a mediation lawyer depends on several factors, including the case's complexity, the lawyer’s experience, and the time required to resolve the dispute. General cost estimates include:

  • Hourly rates: Typically between $150 and $500 per hour.
  • Flat fees: For simple mediations, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Total mediation costs: Can vary widely, from $2,000 to $10,000 for straightforward cases, up to $10,000 to $50,000 or more for complex disputes.

Always request a detailed cost estimate during your consultation to understand total expenses.

Top Questions to Ask a Mediation Lawyer

Before hiring a mediation lawyer, consider asking the following questions:

  1. What experience do you have with mediation cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in handling similar disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify the fee structure and request an estimate based on your specific case.
  3. What is the likelihood of resolving my case through mediation?
Seek an honest assessment of whether mediation is suitable for your situation.
  4. How long will the mediation process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline and number of sessions required.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Confirm who will manage your mediation and represent your interests.
  6. Can we pursue alternative dispute resolution (ADR) if necessary?
Ask about other forms of ADR, such as arbitration, if mediation doesn't resolve the conflict.

How to Check the Credibility of a Mediation Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable mediation lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Verify their bar status: Confirm with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed and has no disciplinary history.
  • Look for mediation experience: Review their website or professional profile for specialization in mediation and successful case histories.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Check platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google for client feedback.
  • Ask for references: Request references from past clients familiar with their mediation skills.
  • Check for certifications: Look for certifications from organizations like the American Arbitration Association (AAA) or the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To maximize the effectiveness of your initial meeting, bring the following:

  • Relevant documents: Any materials related to the dispute, such as contracts, emails, financial records, or court filings.
  • List of key issues: A detailed list of the main points of contention that need resolution.
  • Timeline of events: A chronological account of events leading up to the dispute, including prior resolution attempts.
  • Goals for the mediation: Be prepared to discuss your desired outcomes and areas where you're willing to compromise.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Any queries about the mediation process, fees, or their approach to dispute resolution.

Being well-prepared will help the lawyer assess your case effectively and provide the best possible advice for resolving your dispute through mediation.
