I have worked for Mr. Chatenka for almost two years and also was involved in a car accident in which he represented me for. Not only did he provide the best possible outcome for my personal case but I can and will vouch for his amazing work ethic. Working for Aaron Chatenka and Steinger, Greene & Feiner has been an absolute pleasure, restored my faith in personal injury attorneys and showed me that people still take pride in caring/working for their clients, you are NOT just a number to him. I have never met a more hardworking, reliable and caring attorney in my life. Aaron works to get results that satisfy his clients but he genuinely cares about each person and assists in ensuring they get the best medical treatment available. I would highly recommend Mr. Chatenka to anyone going through a personal injury claim. I would have loved to continue to work for such an upstanding individual. My best wishes to him and then entire firm.

I really appreciate the time my attorney, Aaron Chatenka, took to explain the process and walk me through each step. Since this was my first experience of this kind. I was more than a little apprehensive. My primary concern was getting my health back to normal an not getting stuck with heafty medical bills. Aaron’s personality immediately put me at ease, his professionalism and reliability made the entire process painless and relieved me of unnecessary worry, and ultimately he won a great settlement for me. I highly recommend Steinger, Iscoe and Greene.

David Mitchell is a total Class Act! He has integrity, is extremely adept in this field, very detailed and trustworthy. When he says he's going to call back he actually calls back and in a reasonable amount of time. He always had my file pulled up to discuss details and prior notes. Sounds simple but no one else did it. Others kept me on the phone while guessing answers to my questions... in other words attorneysplaning. I had very bad experiences with other attorneys obviously. Not with David, he is straight up honest and direct in a very professional manner that earned my respect from the very beginning and till the present. He fought for the most we could get and was very efficient. His office staff and partner are equally praised. I wish their were more like him! Thank you David Mitchell

I was very impressed with David. He was always keeping me informed of anything related to my case. He explained every process that was done. He kept me up to date with all my doctors and appointments. He worked hard to get my case settled, even with everything going on with COVID. I hope I never need another attorney; but I would definitely call David if I did.

I retained Mr. Finney to handle a legal matter, of which he promptly returned my call and scheduled a meeting to discuss. Upon completing the fact finding component, Mr. Finney began the process to get things moving. His persistence paid off resulting in the matter getting resolved both in my favor and out of court. In hiring an attorney, time is money. It was refreshing to work with someone who respected that.

I was told by a friend that Steve Hoskins was a good attorney. I called when I had my accident, he held my hand throughout the whole process. Just because you get in an accident doesn't mean your life is over. They helped me through every step with respect. If anyone ever asked me I would highly recommend Mr. Hoskins. They treated me like family. It definitely has been a pleasure working with him. He was nice and very respectful to me, I will be paying it forward.

I have had the opportunity to have Steve represent me in two cases. Steve emulates what every attorney should be! He takes a personal interest in his clients and defends you as if you were his own family! Steve is trustworthy and competent; he goes above and beyond to be sure that every aspect of your case is pursued. Not that I desire to be involved in another case; but, if I was, it is comforting to know that I can call upon Steve Simon and be assured the best representation one could ask for! Having the security of knowing you have someone you could trust is worth the investment! I cannot commend the talents of Steve Simon enough. Words cannot describe the talents of this attorney. Just be assured if he is representing you ~ you could not have asked for anyone better!

I contracted Roger Messer in March 2015 for a personal injury action. In December 2014 I was a passenger in my mother's auto, when she fell asleep and drove off the road. I needed surgery on both shoulders, and I lost considerable work time and money. From early on, every time I talked to Mr. Messer, he warned me that we might not win the case against my mother's auto insurer. During the summer of 2015 I had a couple of surgeries, and then rehab. I talked with Mr. Messer's Paralegal, Julie, in August 2015 and told her my rehab was over. In September 2015 Julie called me and said all Roger needed was a doctor's report on my shoulder. I went to the doctor on October 8, and asked for the report. Doctor said report would be sent to my lawyer. I immediately called Julie and told her that the doctor would send the report. I waited until February 2016. When I heard nothing from my lawyer, I wrote an email. Julie responded by saying, " Haven't heard from you in awhile. Are you still treating?" This came 4 months after I had told her that my treatments were over and the doctor was going to send a report. I asked her if she received the report. She said no. I waited until March, then wrote again. Julie said that she still had not received the report and she would contact me when she did. In April, tired of waiting, I asked her again. She still had not received the report. I personally called the doctor and asked them to send the report. They told me they had sent it months prior. I asked them kindly to resend it. At this point, Roger asked me to personally get my mother's auto insurance policy so he could "go over it". Over one year later he was asking me for a very important document which I believed he already had. Next, after getting the doctor's report, Roger told me he wanted to meet with me to discuss a demand letter and how much we were going to ask for. He said he needed to talk with me first before sending the letter. Great. So I made an appointment, and a few weeks later drove up to meet with Roger. I sat down in front of him, and all he said was, "I'm going to need your prior year's W-2". So I drove 40+ miles round trip for something he could have asked me for over the phone. That was in May 2016. In July 2016, without any prior notice, I received a letter in the mail from Roger with a copy of a demand letter he wrote to the auto insurer. He did not ask me or even let me know that he was going to send the letter. I had zero input as to the demand amount, which, by the way, I believed to be too low. There are more problems I had with Roger, but, in the end, the insurer denied the claim, stating that there was a clause which stated that family members are excluded from making claims against the insured. I went over the policy several times and did not see such a clause. Roger also told me that he went over the policy and never saw such a clause. So then, why did he accept the insurers explanation so easily, and without proof? Obviously, I am going to see another lawyer. I am extremely dissatisfied with Roger Messer's performance, and that of his Paralegal. I believe the case failed more to the efforts, or lack thereof, of my lawyer, than of the law. I do not recommend Roger Messer at all. That is my opinion.

I first met and hired Roger Messer in 1981. Our youngest daughter, Lynnette, was killed by an impaired driver, he also severely, permanently injured her 15 month old son who was in the car with her. My family was devastated by our loss. It was extremely difficult for my husband and myself to deal with legal matters at that time. Initially our reason for seeing Roger was to secure the guardianship of Lynnettes two children , their father and his family were not an option (the father was in jail at the time of the tragedy)---when Roger heard our story he immediately realized we needed more help than this. Roger not only secured the guardianship of the children for us, we later were able to adopt them, he got the children secure, lifetime settlements. He also saved my husband and myself from making a very costly error with the car insurance company, and much more than I could write in this small space. He did all this with the most kindness, and thoughtfulness to our raw feelings. Over the 34 plus years I have (with complete confidence) recommended him to several families who were in a like situation as ourselves, he helped them all. They have all thanked me for sending them to a "jewel". He has helped all three of my remaining children with legal matters, as well as close friends. You can make all the "lawyer" jokes you want (and I have made my share), but I tell you Roger Messer is no "joke". He is compassionate, intelligent, gentle and kind, and he has a wonderful staff. He and his staff over the years have been very generous to the less fortunate in their community. Not only is Roger a very skilled lawyer, he is a wonderful family man, he was always there for his childrens sports and scholastic endeavors, he was a wonderful son to his mom, who he dearly loved and fulfilled her passion for fishing whenever he could. Not only is Roger Messer "my" lawyer-----I think of him as "my friend". I thank him from the bottom of my heart, not only for what he has done for my family, but for being a lawyer who will not and does not lower his standards, he is a lawyer for "victims", not the "bad guy".

This guy should be disbarred. How he passed is beyond me. If you want to lose time and money hire him. My closest friend is a real attorney in NYC and I showed him Steven Messer' conversations with me and he said I should contact the bar association. Guess what? I am very soon.

What a Personal Injury Lawyer Can Do for You

A personal injury lawyer specializes in helping individuals who have been physically or emotionally injured due to the negligence or wrongful actions of another party. Whether you've been hurt in a car accident, suffered a slip and fall, or experienced medical malpractice, a personal injury attorney works to ensure you receive fair compensation for your injuries. They can help you recover damages for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other related expenses.

Personal injury lawyers act as your advocate, navigating the legal system on your behalf and dealing with insurance companies to ensure you get the compensation you deserve. They understand how to handle complex legal matters and help you avoid common pitfalls.

When Should I Hire a Personal Injury Lawyer?

Hiring a personal injury lawyer can be beneficial in many situations where you've been harmed due to another's negligence. Some key scenarios include:

  • Severe injuries: If you've suffered significant or permanent injuries that result in substantial medical bills, a lawyer can help ensure you are fairly compensated.
  • Long-term or permanent disability: Injuries that affect your ability to work or require ongoing medical treatment are complex, and a lawyer can help estimate long-term damages.
  • Disputed liability: If the responsible party or their insurance company denies liability for your injury, a lawyer can gather evidence and advocate on your behalf.
  • Insurance company lowball offers: Insurers often try to settle personal injury claims for as little as possible. A lawyer can negotiate to get you a fair settlement.
  • Medical malpractice claims: Injuries caused by a doctor, nurse, or healthcare provider due to negligence require a personal injury lawyer experienced in medical malpractice law.
  • Exposure to hazardous substances: If you've been injured due to exposure to toxins, chemicals, or dangerous substances, a lawyer can help pursue legal action.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process is crucial, especially if you're unsure of the full extent of your injuries or damages.

What Does a Personal Injury Lawyer Do?

A personal injury lawyer provides a wide range of services to guide you through the legal process and maximize your compensation. They can:

  • Evaluate your case: A lawyer will assess the strength of your claim and determine whether you have a viable case.
  • Investigate the incident: Gathering evidence such as police reports, witness statements, medical records, and expert opinions is key to building a strong case.
  • Negotiate with insurance companies: Lawyers handle communications with insurance companies to ensure you receive a fair settlement and aren't taken advantage of.
  • File a lawsuit if necessary: If a fair settlement can't be reached, the lawyer can file a personal injury lawsuit on your behalf and represent you in court.
  • Help calculate damages: This includes medical expenses, lost wages, future medical needs, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.
  • Prepare and file legal documents: Lawyers handle all the paperwork and deadlines associated with your case, including filing motions and discovery requests.
  • Represent you at trial: If your case goes to trial, the lawyer will argue your case before a judge and jury to obtain the compensation you deserve.

How Are Personal Injury Lawyers Paid?

Most personal injury lawyers work on a contingency fee basis. This means they only get paid if they win your case, either through settlement or a court judgment. Here’s how it works:

  • Contingency fee percentage: The lawyer will take a percentage of the settlement or award, typically between 25% and 40%, depending on the complexity of the case and the stage at which it's resolved.
  • Costs and expenses: In addition to the contingency fee, the lawyer may deduct other costs associated with the case, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, and court costs. These expenses are often advanced by the lawyer and repaid out of the settlement.
  • No upfront payment: Since the lawyer’s fee is contingent on winning, you usually don’t pay anything upfront.

Always discuss the lawyer’s fee structure during your consultation to avoid surprises.

How Much Does a Personal Injury Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a personal injury lawyer depends on the specifics of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure. However, since most personal injury lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, the amount you pay will depend on the outcome of your case. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Contingency fees: Typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or award. The percentage may increase if the case goes to trial or requires an appeal.
  • Other costs: In addition to the lawyer's fee, you may be responsible for case-related expenses such as expert witness fees, medical record retrieval fees, and court costs. These are often deducted from your settlement, so you won't have to pay out of pocket.

While the cost may seem high, hiring an experienced lawyer can significantly increase the amount you recover, making it a worthwhile investment.

Top Questions to Ask a Personal Injury Lawyer

Before hiring a personal injury lawyer, it's essential to ask questions to ensure you’re choosing the right representation. Here are some important questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with personal injury cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has handled cases involving similar injuries or accidents.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a contingency fee and what percentage they will take from any settlement or award.
  3. How long will my case take?
While it's hard to predict, a lawyer can give you an estimate based on similar cases they’ve handled.
  4. How often do you take cases to trial?
Some lawyers prefer to settle quickly, while others are more comfortable going to court if necessary.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
In larger firms, junior lawyers or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case, so it's important to know who will be managing your claim.
  6. Do you have references from past clients?
Speaking with past clients can provide valuable insight into the lawyer’s effectiveness and professionalism.

How to Check the Credibility of a Personal Injury Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible personal injury lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any history of disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, and Google reviews can provide insight into the lawyer's reputation and client satisfaction.
  • Look at their track record: Review their experience with personal injury cases, particularly how many cases they’ve successfully resolved or taken to trial.
  • Ask for references: Credible lawyers should be willing to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their work.
  • Check professional memberships: Lawyers who are members of respected organizations, like the American Association for Justice (AAJ), often have a solid reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with a personal injury lawyer, prepare the following:

  • Detailed account of the accident: Write down everything you remember about the incident, including dates, times, and locations. Include any witnesses or police reports if available.
  • Medical records and bills: Bring any documentation of your injuries, treatments, and associated medical costs.
  • Insurance information: Provide your insurance details and any communication you’ve had with the other party’s insurance company.
  • Employment and income records: If your injury has impacted your ability to work, bring proof of lost wages or reduced earning capacity.
  • Photos or videos: If you have photos of the accident scene, your injuries, or property damage, bring them to your consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare a list of questions to ask, including how the lawyer will handle your case and what you can expect in terms of timeline and outcome.

By preparing thoroughly for your first consultation, you’ll help the lawyer understand your case more quickly and get a better sense of your legal options.
