We joined with them and the very next day, Lisa joined the team and did an outstanding job representing our interests and advocating for us. She was able to execute and complete the follow through discussed as the ideal outcome and made us feel heard and valued. She showed true compassion for us, and passion for justice, and was an excellent representative of her firm. Karo is the most gentle, understanding attorney I've ever had, and he really is able to give you a picture of your situation from both the ground level, and at 30,000 feet. He was so good at informing me of all the contingencies I should expect to deal with along the way, and we talked extensively about those contingencies and how we might deal with them if they arise. When you have a lawyer who is able to give you insight into all the unexpected things that might pop up along the way, you feel much better prepared and much less nervous. Every other lawyer I've ever had just makes things worse and makes me more anxious than before I retained them. It makes you wonder "why did I even hire a lawyer at all if they are going to only raise my anxiety levels?" Karo was the exact opposite of that. He made me feel confident and sure of my position. But what surprised me most about Karo is that despite his gentle nature, he is quite a fierce litigator. And he is worth his weight in gold on so many levels. I had a terrible ordeal that involved a hit & run driver who deliberately rammed me through traffic, just so they can get out of rush hour traffic. We turned to Liana after my husband and I were denied our case due to the non-receipt of the documents we sent. We went through ten circles of hell before finally finding Lianna. All the lawyers said it was better to open the case from scratch, pay an exorbitant amount of fees, and wait again. Others said that the fees would still have to be paid again to get the case reviewed. And others refused to take on the case due to its complexity and ambiguity. Lianna, however, clearly explained all the steps we would take, and told us that it was not our mistake and we should not pay any fees again. As a result, our case was reopened for review. Ten days later, we received approval for our case! Words cannot express how grateful I am to Liana! She truly saved our case and helped us immensely when we had almost lost hope. Told them my landlord just broke the law regarding removing political posters, intimidating a disabled elderly tenant, and they said "landlords are bullies sometimes that happens". Then she gave me a phone number to report it somewhere else.
She didn't help me write a demand letter or even give any advice other than "let the landlord break the law and remove your legal political poster".
Literally also said "if he evicts you we can help otherwise we can't". So they wait until you are fully getting thrown out before they do anything. They aren't here to hold Landlords accountable to the law. That part seemed very clear. To be clear, California Code, Civil Code - CIV § 1940.4 protects tenants political signs and posters especially during an election season. This BASTA office either ignored that or didn't care. Either way. Donate to other non profits. Not this one.
