It's been five years since Attorney Susan Wakefield sat with me and explained that my divorce would be emotionally, financially, and legally challenging. She offered her personalized mediation services and explored mutually acceptable options. Specifically, she educated me so that I would feel empowered to choose the best outcome. She showed compassion and began the process with amicability, though was never afraid to throw on the gloves and fight for me. I felt that I had a fierce team of advocates backing me up with the focus on honesty. Attorney Susan Wakefield never sugar-coated matters, she gave it to me straight so that I knew where my case stood. I am grateful for the commitment of working together that brought consistent, efficient, and first-class representation and service. Attorney Susan Wakefield was the consummate professional that I needed to advocate on my behalf.

I was able to talk to Joe Maya about my husband's case regarding his daughter and her refusal to do schoolwork. I needed advice on whether my husband can legally do something since his ex isn't notifying him about his daughter's refusal to do work and since he hasn't seen his daughter since the pandemic began. Joe was very helpful and told me the direction that my husband can go if he decides to. It is good to hear that my husband may be able to fight to help his daughter even if that includes changing custody.

I contacted the law firm of Maya Murphy after another attorney had already initiated my divorce. What should have been a straightforward divorce (married 5 years, no kids, all assets/debt kept separately and listed in our individual names, both of us employed in well paying jobs with benefits) was turning into anything but straightforward. I really wanted to end my marriage as amicably as possible without a long drawn-out divorce and trial. I had some upcoming court dates and was unable to get any meaningful information from my first attorney about what was expected. When I walked into Maya Murphy, I was very concerned that my divorce was going to be long and costly. As soon as I walked into the offices of Maya Murphy and spoke with Ephraim Fink (EJ) and his colleagues, I felt completely relieved and confident in my decision to switch law firms. EJ got up to speed very quickly on my case and understood the issues. He was professional, thorough, and knew exactly how to proceed. I always felt that EJ was looking out for my best interests. In less than two months, my divorce was settled amicably, with a very fair settlement, during a pre-trial hearing. He made sure I understood and agreed to every aspect of the settlement. Everything was handled in a very timely manner. Maya Murphy was very reasonable when invoicing for his time. I would definitely recommend EJ and the Maya Murphy law firm.

I retained EJ just 3 months before a trial date for a high conflict divorce and custody battle. The divorce had been filed 15 months prior and the cards were so heavily stacked against me I didn't think I'd make it through this. In just 90 days EJ changed this whole situation! His attention to detail is impeccable. His personal care and consideration is truly astounding. He is extremely professional yet personal and humorous which is so very important in these types of situations. He has a realistic and logical approach that is not only refreshing but also provides the desired results. He has an ability like no other to keep clients calm and confident through a difficult life transition. My only regret was not having found this incredible attorney at the beginning of my divorce, however even with out doing so he managed to win this case. He truly made the best interest of the children his over arching objective at all times. He was in no way intimidated by the smoke and mirrors coming from the other side and maintained professionalism at confidence at all times. EJ truly changed the course of my life by being my attorney. If you are considering him I assure you that you will not be disappointed and he will surpass your expectations. If you are reading this review... you truly have found the best attorney for you.

Joe's extensive experience, approachable and friendly demeanor, remarkable responsiveness, dedication to his clients' particular goals and priorities, and professional but appropriately feisty advocacy in court made him an excellent legal representative for me during a painful divorce proceeding involving child custody, health and disability issues, complications stemming from a signed prenuptial agreement and my former spouse's willingness to be dishonest in court. Joe not only did his job well but provided me with tempered and welcome advice about how to best focus my efforts and emotional energy. I am grateful that he has been my lawyer and recommend him highly.

Joe Hubicki handled my divorce with skill and integrity when all other options failed. My ex-husband and I were in an endless loop of anger, sadness and stress going through the divorce process. Our horrible communications only added to the stress. There came a time when it was obvious we needed a thrid party. I hired Joe and he turned it all around for me. His words "ok, let me take care of it from here" were a gift to me. Shortly after I was divorced with a fair settlement. And that is exactly what I wanted. So, from one "been through it" to another, if you're looking for a good representative through this hellish process, I would say call Joe for a consultation.

We were hit with a situation that we had no idea how to handle. Justin was recommended to us and he was phenomenal. He called us back quickly, was a great listener and gave us very thoughtful responses. Justin proceeded to do a lot of research, and concluded that another attorney, with experience in our case, was better suited to help us. He was right – the attorney he found for us was exactly who we needed. Justin was professional, compassionate, thorough and beyond helpful. We are so impressed with Justin and highly recommend him.

If I could offer 10 stars, I would. Trustworthy, responsive, ethical, considerate, fair, real, honest, reassuring, committed, gritty, and a perfectionist to the very degree you need him to be is how to describe Eric Bernheim at FLB. But most of all.. overwhelming dedicated and intelligent. We were able to win a highly complicated, intense, and non-favoring case (involving residential property rights x easement x utility company x conservation) because of his unwavering focus and exquisite strategy. Eric came highly recommended to me from the Brody Wilkerson group and I’m grateful for their referral as I know we could not have won the case if anyone else but Eric represented my family and I. I’m grateful to every last end for his help and recommendations along the way which ended in a win. Google Eric Bernheim and you will find him to be one of the best. Here’s a quote of his I found online of his that I can verify first-hand to be true as one his clients…. “My primary motivation is to ease the burdens of my clients and help them to be successful in whatever they are pursuing. It’s my job to minimize their risk so they can maximize their potential. By providing sound legal counsel in an atmosphere that promotes collaboration, I put them at ease so they can address the other priorities in their businesses and lives. My goal is to always try to provide them peace of mind when it comes to their legal challenges.” Highly recommend.

Attorney Shea is probably very good. HOWEVER, I found him through a legal aid type of website & she seemed to decide there was no money for him in my situation & basically hung up in my face. I told him from the start that I was not looking to make money; rather just needed to know my rights. If he isn’t looking to help/advise people, he should remove his name and/or firm from those sites. I’m sure there are many more attorneys who are kind, patient, and have10 minutes for a few questions pro-bono. If you have a lot of money and want to sue someon, Mr.Shea may be your guy. If not, look further

Grain of salt: this was my husband's lawyer in a no contest and previously amicable divorce. I was never notified of any court appearances. If this lawyer had actually done what said she would do, there would be no issue. But either inept or a straight up liar, she went against my express wishes, never redid the paperwork, and incorporated lies. Cost for me to undo it will be $1500. Plus, she actually caused a delay in the divorce, made tons of extra secret motions to get more money from my stupid ex husband.

What a Personal Injury Lawyer Can Do for You

A personal injury lawyer specializes in helping individuals who have been physically or emotionally injured due to the negligence or wrongful actions of another party. Whether you've been hurt in a car accident, suffered a slip and fall, or experienced medical malpractice, a personal injury attorney works to ensure you receive fair compensation for your injuries. They can help you recover damages for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other related expenses.

Personal injury lawyers act as your advocate, navigating the legal system on your behalf and dealing with insurance companies to ensure you get the compensation you deserve. They understand how to handle complex legal matters and help you avoid common pitfalls.

When Should I Hire a Personal Injury Lawyer?

Hiring a personal injury lawyer can be beneficial in many situations where you've been harmed due to another's negligence. Some key scenarios include:

  • Severe injuries: If you've suffered significant or permanent injuries that result in substantial medical bills, a lawyer can help ensure you are fairly compensated.
  • Long-term or permanent disability: Injuries that affect your ability to work or require ongoing medical treatment are complex, and a lawyer can help estimate long-term damages.
  • Disputed liability: If the responsible party or their insurance company denies liability for your injury, a lawyer can gather evidence and advocate on your behalf.
  • Insurance company lowball offers: Insurers often try to settle personal injury claims for as little as possible. A lawyer can negotiate to get you a fair settlement.
  • Medical malpractice claims: Injuries caused by a doctor, nurse, or healthcare provider due to negligence require a personal injury lawyer experienced in medical malpractice law.
  • Exposure to hazardous substances: If you've been injured due to exposure to toxins, chemicals, or dangerous substances, a lawyer can help pursue legal action.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process is crucial, especially if you're unsure of the full extent of your injuries or damages.

What Does a Personal Injury Lawyer Do?

A personal injury lawyer provides a wide range of services to guide you through the legal process and maximize your compensation. They can:

  • Evaluate your case: A lawyer will assess the strength of your claim and determine whether you have a viable case.
  • Investigate the incident: Gathering evidence such as police reports, witness statements, medical records, and expert opinions is key to building a strong case.
  • Negotiate with insurance companies: Lawyers handle communications with insurance companies to ensure you receive a fair settlement and aren't taken advantage of.
  • File a lawsuit if necessary: If a fair settlement can't be reached, the lawyer can file a personal injury lawsuit on your behalf and represent you in court.
  • Help calculate damages: This includes medical expenses, lost wages, future medical needs, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.
  • Prepare and file legal documents: Lawyers handle all the paperwork and deadlines associated with your case, including filing motions and discovery requests.
  • Represent you at trial: If your case goes to trial, the lawyer will argue your case before a judge and jury to obtain the compensation you deserve.

How Are Personal Injury Lawyers Paid?

Most personal injury lawyers work on a contingency fee basis. This means they only get paid if they win your case, either through settlement or a court judgment. Here’s how it works:

  • Contingency fee percentage: The lawyer will take a percentage of the settlement or award, typically between 25% and 40%, depending on the complexity of the case and the stage at which it's resolved.
  • Costs and expenses: In addition to the contingency fee, the lawyer may deduct other costs associated with the case, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, and court costs. These expenses are often advanced by the lawyer and repaid out of the settlement.
  • No upfront payment: Since the lawyer’s fee is contingent on winning, you usually don’t pay anything upfront.

Always discuss the lawyer’s fee structure during your consultation to avoid surprises.

How Much Does a Personal Injury Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a personal injury lawyer depends on the specifics of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure. However, since most personal injury lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, the amount you pay will depend on the outcome of your case. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Contingency fees: Typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or award. The percentage may increase if the case goes to trial or requires an appeal.
  • Other costs: In addition to the lawyer's fee, you may be responsible for case-related expenses such as expert witness fees, medical record retrieval fees, and court costs. These are often deducted from your settlement, so you won't have to pay out of pocket.

While the cost may seem high, hiring an experienced lawyer can significantly increase the amount you recover, making it a worthwhile investment.

Top Questions to Ask a Personal Injury Lawyer

Before hiring a personal injury lawyer, it's essential to ask questions to ensure you’re choosing the right representation. Here are some important questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with personal injury cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has handled cases involving similar injuries or accidents.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a contingency fee and what percentage they will take from any settlement or award.
  3. How long will my case take?
While it's hard to predict, a lawyer can give you an estimate based on similar cases they’ve handled.
  4. How often do you take cases to trial?
Some lawyers prefer to settle quickly, while others are more comfortable going to court if necessary.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
In larger firms, junior lawyers or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case, so it's important to know who will be managing your claim.
  6. Do you have references from past clients?
Speaking with past clients can provide valuable insight into the lawyer’s effectiveness and professionalism.

How to Check the Credibility of a Personal Injury Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible personal injury lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any history of disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, and Google reviews can provide insight into the lawyer's reputation and client satisfaction.
  • Look at their track record: Review their experience with personal injury cases, particularly how many cases they’ve successfully resolved or taken to trial.
  • Ask for references: Credible lawyers should be willing to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their work.
  • Check professional memberships: Lawyers who are members of respected organizations, like the American Association for Justice (AAJ), often have a solid reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with a personal injury lawyer, prepare the following:

  • Detailed account of the accident: Write down everything you remember about the incident, including dates, times, and locations. Include any witnesses or police reports if available.
  • Medical records and bills: Bring any documentation of your injuries, treatments, and associated medical costs.
  • Insurance information: Provide your insurance details and any communication you’ve had with the other party’s insurance company.
  • Employment and income records: If your injury has impacted your ability to work, bring proof of lost wages or reduced earning capacity.
  • Photos or videos: If you have photos of the accident scene, your injuries, or property damage, bring them to your consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare a list of questions to ask, including how the lawyer will handle your case and what you can expect in terms of timeline and outcome.

By preparing thoroughly for your first consultation, you’ll help the lawyer understand your case more quickly and get a better sense of your legal options.
