I cannot recommend Thiros & Thiros enough as an attorney. The most highly intelligent & caring law professional that I’ve come to know. Any questions I had thru email were answered within minutes of sending - and I’m not being dramatic - every email I sent was answered immediately. We ran into no issues & they kept me informed thru the entire process. The fees were less than all the attorneys I reached out to prior to contacting them. If you are needing representation I highly recommend Thiros and his firm. He made my dreams comes true & I’ll forever be grateful. J.A.

I’m very happy to be one of those writing positive comments about a hacker because prior to me contacting a hacker, I almost didn’t believe it was actually possible to get your credit repaired by one but I’m so glad it worked out and I now know a trusted hacker called PINNACLE CREDIT SPECIALIST. He erased my bankruptcy which was the cause of a lot of other problems and raised my credit scores to excellent scores. So I want you all to also contact him on his email:

Mr. Olsen has handled several items for us including will, trusts and estate planning. He is very knowledgeable and respectful. We were impressed with his promptness for appointments. We very much appreciated his sense of humor, which relaxed us. We felt comfortable to express our thoughts honestly. We also had several discussions with his very competent legal aide-the whole staff is polite and knowledgeable.

But If he doesn't charge for calls and email, he'd be out money because people will just keep asking and asking .... - having said that, Ben is my estate lawyer. I'm careful about my calls and he charged what he said. I've used him twice and the 2nd time, he gave me an even better price. I'm sending my daughter to him in a month and I'll update later. He is very knowledgeable and talked me out of a bad decision. Oh, and I had replaced him with one from chesterton who talked down to me and two points were hurting my heirs. Don't need that. And he wasn't any cheaper.

After hiring Ben Ballou to adjudicate my mothers estate and trust I was shocked to be presented with a bill for double what he originally quoted me. Since closing the estate; I have had to go back and ask several questions regarding issues that have cropped up and every time I call or e-mail I am charged for his time. Wouldn't you think that since he charged me double to begin with, that he might be able to answer a few simple questions without charging me $100 every time? When I first hired Ben he claimed that because he had a legal assistant doing most of the "leg work" that the charges would be less than other legal firms. HA!HA!HA! I would not trust this lawyer or firm to hold true to their assessment of the time it takes to settle an estate when they quote you a price. By the way. . . My mothers’ estate was a fairly easy job to begin with. She had a will and most of her assets in a trust. Go find another lawyer and another law firm!

This law firm is one of the best in Northwest Indiana that I had the privilege of doing business with. This firm was very helpful, supportive, and understanding in every way. They even helped finalize a couple of my family member’s cases as well. If you ever run into any financial issues, I strongly advise you to call this law firm Whitten and Whitten and ask for Angie and Amanda. These ladies will greatly assist you in every way. Give them a try. You will not be disappointed! Thank you again and I am so relieved with happy tears! 😊👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🎉🎊👍🏼

I came to Robert Plantz needing help with false accusations against me in a PO which turned into a second a couple months later. I was greeted at the door with all the help and answers I could have ever asked for. Attorney Alex Moffett was very professional, knowledgeable and aggressive while representing me and answered all the questions I had throughout the process of it all (I had a lot) I thank Alex, Robert and his team who helped me get BOTH POs dropped against me. They are all very knowledgeable, professional and truthful telling you exactly how your situation is and the likely outcome. I could not have asked for a better firm and team to have represented me and helped me. You will not be disappointed with this firm and I could not recommend them enough.

I can’t begin to put into words how amazing Attorney Plantz is. I had gone through 3 attorneys over 6 years until I came into contact with Robert Plantz. I had just about given up hope when it came to custody with my son’s father. The attorneys I hired before him never stood up or fought for me. I spent years being put down by my sons fathers attorney, and I always settled. Robert gave me hope, and comfort that I was in great hands. He’s straight forward, honest, and most importantly he fights for his clients!!! His staff is absolutely amazing. It’s so rare to find an attorney that has a great team from top to bottom. His receptionist is always so friendly, and willing to help in whatever way she can. Carmen his paralegal is ALWAYS on top of things. If Robert wasn’t available he always made sure Attorney Alex jumped in to help with my needs right away, and he is a great pleasure to work with as well. My only regret was that he wasn’t my first attorney, but I can guarantee as long as his firms doors are open he will always have my business. I highly recommend this law firm! I promise you, you won’t be disappointed.

Chris is an intelligent, fair priced attorney who has taken on many referrals from me. He has done exceptional work for his clients in a timely, cost effectjve manner. Some people do not understand that the Legal System is a Process and a Practice. That being said, patience is something that one ahould be prepared to endure given the dynamics, and whether or not one is being conscientious regarding a case. I have found that Chris will tell it like it is up front and does not over charge for services. He is honest and fair.

My family hired Chris in July of 2016 on an estate case. He was horrible and drug his feet on every aspect of the case. Even after difficult parties of the case were bought out and removed from the equation in November of 2016 it still took till April of 2018 to close the estate. There was no reason for it to take this long since all remaining parties agreed on everything. He drug his feet constantly put us on the back burner. Every time one of us called to simply ask what the hold up was he charged more hours. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone unless you have endless time and money. We wanted to complete this in a timely matter so the house could be sold and property divided quickly since none of the family live in the area anymore and couldn't be there to constantly take care of this. He did a settlement for difficult parties that was definitely more in their favor than ours but at the point we just wanted it over. I do not feel he had our best interested in mind, just wanted to get paid.

Attorney did not address the upmost concern I hired him for that was clearly in our consolation conversation. Easements/improvements to a residential property purchase. When questioned him, he said "you already signed" WHAT? I expected guidance before I proceeded.. Also, I am Dissatisfied with a CONDITION that was not met, no guidance was offered. and that I do not have verifiable proof of the "Condition" agreed. I emailed my complaint & still do not have legal proof of agreement. He did present another issue of charges that were Not in Agreement that was in my consolation discussion.

I hired Mr. Goad to handle my divorce and child custody cases. At first he was very attentive but after six months, he became very laxed. He went for weeks without returning my calls when I had an upcoming hearing and through the information from other lawyers I have contacts with, unbeknownst to me, he made a lot of detrimental mistakes that have cost me dearly and he ended up running away with the money he made off of me to cover his errors. Do NOT use him! My ex even warned me having contacts that Mr Goad also screwed over. I did not want to believe it would happen to me but later it did.

What a Probate Lawyer Can Do for You

A probate lawyer assists with the legal process of administering a deceased person’s estate. This often involves guiding executors (if a will exists) or beneficiaries (if no will exists) through the probate process to settle the estate according to the deceased’s wishes or applicable laws. Probate lawyers can help validate the will, distribute assets, resolve disputes among heirs, handle outstanding debts or taxes, and ensure the estate is legally and efficiently administered.

Whether you’re an executor of an estate or an heir facing probate proceedings, a probate lawyer can help you navigate the often-complex legal process to ensure the estate is settled correctly.

When Should I Hire a Probate Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a probate lawyer when you are responsible for managing the estate of a deceased individual, especially in the following situations:

  • The estate has substantial assets: If the estate includes significant assets like real estate, investments, or business interests, legal assistance is often necessary to handle the distribution properly.
  • The will is being contested: If there are disputes among heirs regarding the validity of the will or the division of assets, a probate lawyer can help resolve the conflict.
  • The estate includes complex or unclear provisions: If the will contains complicated instructions or there are no clear beneficiaries, a lawyer can ensure that the estate is administered according to legal requirements.
  • There is no will (intestate estate): When a person dies without a will, the estate is subject to intestacy laws, which determine how assets are distributed. A probate lawyer can help navigate this process.
  • Debt or tax issues exist: If the estate owes significant debts or is subject to estate taxes, a probate lawyer can help ensure debts are paid appropriately and taxes are minimized.
  • Probate disputes: If family members or other parties are disputing the distribution of assets or challenging the executor's actions, legal representation is crucial to defending your rights and ensuring the estate is handled properly.

Hiring a probate lawyer early in the process can help avoid costly mistakes and ensure the estate is settled efficiently.

What Does a Probate Lawyer Do?

A probate lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help manage and settle an estate. Their tasks can include:

  • Validating the will: Filing the will with the probate court and ensuring its legal validity.
  • Guiding executors or administrators: Advising the person responsible for managing the estate on their duties, including inventorying assets, notifying creditors, and paying debts.
  • Filing necessary paperwork: Preparing and submitting the legal documents required to initiate and complete the probate process.
  • Resolving disputes: Mediating or litigating disputes among heirs or between beneficiaries and executors, including challenges to the will or disagreements over asset distribution.
  • Handling debt and tax matters: Ensuring that outstanding debts, taxes, and estate taxes are properly calculated and paid from the estate’s assets.
  • Distributing assets: Ensuring that assets are distributed to the beneficiaries according to the will or intestacy laws, and that all legal requirements are fulfilled.
  • Closing the estate: Completing the final steps of the probate process, including filing a final accounting with the court and formally closing the estate.

How Are Probate Lawyers Paid?

Probate lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the estate and the nature of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Most probate lawyers charge by the hour, with rates depending on the lawyer’s experience and the complexity of the estate. Hourly rates can range from $150 to $500 or more.
  • Flat fee: For simple estates or straightforward probate tasks, some lawyers may charge a flat fee that covers all of the necessary legal work.
  • Percentage of the estate: In some states, probate lawyers are allowed to charge a percentage of the estate's value as their fee. This percentage typically ranges from 2% to 5%, depending on the size of the estate and state regulations.
  • Retainer fee: Some lawyers may require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the probate process progresses.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to understand how you will be charged and avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Probate Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a probate lawyer depends on several factors, including the complexity of the estate, the type of legal issues involved, and the lawyer’s fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estates: For estates with straightforward assets and no disputes, probate legal fees can range from $2,500 to $10,000, depending on the lawyer's fees and the state's probate laws.
  • Complex estates: For larger or more complicated estates with multiple properties, business interests, or disputes, probate costs can exceed $10,000 and may reach $20,000 or more.
  • Hourly rates: If charged by the hour, expect rates between $150 and $500, depending on the lawyer’s expertise and geographic location.
  • Percentage fees: In some cases, a probate lawyer may charge 2% to 5% of the estate’s value, particularly for larger estates or those involving complex legal matters.

Always ask for a clear estimate of fees during your initial consultation to understand the total cost of probate representation.

Top Questions to Ask a Probate Lawyer

Before hiring a probate lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure you’re hiring someone qualified to handle your estate needs. Key questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with probate cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience with estates of similar complexity, especially if disputes or high-value assets are involved.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a percentage of the estate, and request a cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely timeline for my probate case?
While it’s hard to predict exactly, an experienced lawyer can give you a general idea of how long the probate process may take based on the specifics of your estate.
  4. What steps will you take to manage and distribute the estate?
Ask about the lawyer’s approach to handling debts, taxes, and asset distribution.
  5. Will you be handling my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case, so it’s important to know who will be working on your probate case.
  6. What are potential challenges we may face?
A good lawyer will be able to anticipate possible issues, such as will contests or creditor claims, and explain how they would handle them.

How to Check the Credibility of a Probate Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable probate lawyer, follow these steps to check their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their state bar status: Check with your state’s bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary action.
  • Look for probate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in probate law and have experience handling estates of similar complexity.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for online reviews on platforms like Avvo or Martindale-Hubbell to see what past clients have said about the lawyer’s probate experience.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their professionalism and expertise in handling probate matters.
  • Look for membership in professional organizations: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys (AAEPA) or the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) can indicate a lawyer's commitment to estate and probate law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a probate lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A copy of the will or trust (if applicable): Bring any estate planning documents left by the deceased, including wills, trusts, or powers of attorney.
  • List of assets and debts: Prepare a detailed list of the deceased’s assets (e.g., real estate, bank accounts, investments) and outstanding debts (e.g., loans, mortgages, credit cards).
  • Death certificate: Bring a certified copy of the deceased person’s death certificate.
  • Contact information for heirs and beneficiaries: Have a list of all individuals or entities named in the will or who are entitled to inherit under intestacy laws.
  • Questions about the probate process: Write down any questions you have about the process, costs, and potential issues you might face.
  • Relevant financial records: If available, bring any relevant financial documents, such as bank statements, property deeds, and tax returns.

By coming prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and allow the lawyer to provide the best advice for your situation.
