Everyone at this office goes above and beyond to not only put your mind at ease but to have your back in your decisions. I met with the team initially in person for my consult and knew right away they were who I wanted to represent me - I felt confident they would have my best interest in mind, they would support whatever decisions I made and make sure I was fully informed of the outcome those decisions would entail, and they answered my gazillion emails in a timely fashion. The team helped me finalize my separation and I will be reaching out again when the time comes for official divorce. If you are looking for an amazing lawyer to represent you, you will not find anyone better than piedmont eastern litigation! Thank you Cody, Michelle and Demetris!!

Excellent representation, with empathy, compassion, and ethical professional services. I highly recommend this firm. Cody Boykin Moss, with his uplifting and attentive mind set, truly makes the process of any legal matter, easer! His outstanding ability to focus on facts and attentiveness, is impressive and valuable. I have had representation that ended up costing a ridiculous amount of money, being charged hourly, having to reiterate my case over and over again; still ending without a fair resolution. I give Cody and the firm he is with 5 stars for having empathy as well as ethics.

I can’t fully express how incredible my experience with Santiago and his team has been. From start to finish, Santiago was not only a brilliant lawyer but also an incredibly kind and understanding person. Throughout the entire process, he made me feel validated, listened to, and supported. He explained every step of the way, ensuring I always understood what was happening, and made me feel like I was in the best possible hands. Santiago truly became the best advocate I could have ever asked for—dedicated, patient, and always looking out for my best interests. I also would like to mention Joe Budd, who was the first to respond when I initially reached out to the firm. He got back to me the same day, listened attentively, and reassured me when I was doubting my own experience. His support and encouragement made a world of difference in helping me move forward confidently. Words can’t fully convey how thankful I am for Santiago's dedication. If you’re looking for a genuine and caring lawyer to represent you and simplify the overwhelming legal process, this is the team you need!

I’m so thankful to have the opportunity to share my experience with Thorp Law. From the beginning, Isaac and his paralegal Tammy expressed empathy with regard to the unforeseen situation I had found myself in following an MVA in November of 2023. At my very first meeting with Isaac and Tammy, they helped me to understand the process I was getting ready to face, as well as their initial plan of action. Also, as I’m sure every law firm does, both of them told me that should I ever have any questions, to not hesitate to reach out to them. Following that consultation, and during the course of their representation of me, every time I had a question, and I do mean every time, Isaac and/or Tammy always responded promptly to any question I had about my case. I can honestly say I never had to wait or track either of them down to get a response. I feel like my MVA claim was handled professionally, and I always felt that I was in the most capable hands possible. I would absolutely recommend Thorp Law to anyone who finds themselves in the unfortunate position of suffering from injuries resulting in unforeseen circumstances following an MVA. Isaac and Tammy truly care about their clients, and you will not feel like a number to them, as they both are genuinely concerned about the welfare of each of their clients and work hard to get the best possible outcome.

Absolute Scam and Unprofessional Behavior Jeremy, I hired you to help with a bogus speeding ticket, where I have clear dash cam footage showing my speed, location, and the officer’s actions before and after the stop. Yet, you had the nerve to tell me you could “maybe” reduce the ticket to a 14-over, despite knowing the entire ticket was a joke. After this ridiculous introduction, I called the very next day—over a month before the court date—and requested a refund. Your desk lady assured me I’d get a full refund. But today, I get a call telling me the case was continued (even though I fired you), and now you’re only offering half of my payment back because you “spent 20 minutes” on my case? That’s a load of crap. Then, to top it off you have the audacity to threaten me with legal action if I dispute this scam through my bank. I called for help with accident/injury and criminal defense from an ad. When I spoke with someone from the criminal defense team they were rude and unprofessional. Also the "help" I received was clearly from a Google search and also largely inapplicable. I understand that consultation exists for a reason but so does professionalism.

The process of filing my EB-2 was not only making nervous but also giving me alot of challenges in terms of providing accurate information in the USCIS forms. Each check box matters on every USCIS form, and there is only correct way of doing it! I was nervous that I would make errors. When Mueni Muli and team came onboard, they did all the paperwork, consulted me all through the process and successfully filed and obtained an EB-2 approval!! It did not end there, the team reached out to me later and informed me that since there is a nearly 18-month delay in visa availability, we should file an EB-1. They assured me that it is doable, and the petition was very professionally put together to meet the EB-1 criteria. Through an exceptionally seamless interaction with Mueni and her team, we successfully filed an EB-1, and I am now a green card holder! The effort that team put in was so much, working long hours, compiling huge booklets of the petition and guiding me at every step of the process! I will highly recommend your services to the clients out there! Thank you for your outstanding work. You made it! we made it!

When I first came to Travis, I was confused and lacking confidence with the Workers’ Comp legal system. Prior to speaking more about Travis, please allow me to explain how I had a 2nd chance to receive excellent legal representation, and meet Travis. My original attorney (not Travis Payne) felt my case had become too complicated, and asked me to settle for what I felt was an inappropriate amount, or pay him more $ money than the previously agreed upon rate. This 1st attorney contacted my former employer’s legal team, and let them know I was soon to be without representation. I felt this was likely done to scare me into paying this attorney what I felt was borderline extortion. Maybe this money was needed to keep up the payments in the opulently decorated fancy facility? What I do know is within days, I received packages of files containing literally hundreds of legal documents. My former employer indicated since I was without an attorney, I would have “X” days to answer many questions or else. I felt I was incompetent to represent myself, and felt I was being intimidated by my former employer. I was under tremendous emotional stress, and suffering from physical pain trying to recover from a serious workplace injury. I was feeling nervous, and knew I didn't have the skill set to manage my case. Unable to think clearly, I contemplated simply dropping my case. After a few less than friendly phone calls from people representing my former employer, I began seeking representation again. I called several attorneys, but struggled to find someone who seemed to care or had sincere interest in my case. I learned some workers' compensation attorneys only seemed interested in easy cases where a person had lost a limb (or worse) during an accident. I was glad I hadn’t lost a limb, however began to feel my situation was hopeless. Here's the good part. I thank my lucky stars for having the opportunity to speak with and meet Travis Payne. When I first met him, he came down the stairs of his modest facility, and had on a Jimi Hendrix T-shirt and jeans. 20 minutes later, I realized I met a true Salt-of-the-Earth Dude. In an hour, Travis taught me more about my rights than my previous attorney had in nearly a year. Travis even advised me of benefits I should have applied for months prior to meeting him. Travis told me, “Write this down, this is really important. I can’t believe your previous attorney hadn’t advised you to, but you still have time.….” Well, I felt and still feel Travis was a well-timed gift. I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to truly thank him enough. He advised me during our 1st call I had a strong case. He was honest, and said it would be a lot of work, but he'd be happy to help. He organized my case quickly, and instructed my former employer to stop contacting me. What a relief! Travis’ team was outstanding! Angie in particular was always exceptionally kind. They sent me a copy of all communications to my former employer, and I never felt in the dark. They also never pressured me to settle. Travis is not a doctor, however his handling of my case genuinely helped my emotional health. Later, my case settled for 800% more $ than the previous attorney asked me to accept. Plus, thanks to Travis’ professional advice, I continue to receive very necessary benefits which I wouldn’t have known I qualified for were it not for Travis’ compassionate, honest, professional advice. Regretfully, I remain permanently disabled, however am able to live above the poverty line thanks to Travis’ ability to advocate for me, and help me see the big picture. My only regret would be not having gone to Travis 1st. I have referred family and friends to Travis, because I feel his rare combination of Honesty, Caring, and Fighting skills are truly hard to find. If you’re finding yourself like I was, and simply unsure what to do with regard to your on the job accident, I would highly recommend calling Travis first.

Approximately 7 years ago (2010), I was injured while working. My employer did not deny any claims and arranged for the medical care that I needed. Unfortunately, after several surgeries, it became clear to my doctor that I would not be able to return to work in the capacity that I did before the injury. As such, my employer started the conversation regarding medical retirement. Up to the point of retirement, I didn't feel that I necessarily needed an attorney. However, when I started moving towards the inevitable medical retirement, I retained Mr. Payne. I was impressed with him, even before hiring him. I remember calling/emailing Mr. Payne if I had a question about the work comp situation. This was BEFORE I hired him to represent me. I think it says a lot about his character and his desire to help people that get into situations like I did. After retaining Mr. Payne, he walked me through my journey of retirement at age 27. His knowledge of the work comp system is quite impressive. I must also add that I met with 2 other attorneys before retaining Mr. Payne. The others that I contacted just seemed to really be a little preoccupied with other cases. They also were not familiar with my employers medical retirement process. However, Mr. Payne knew all about the medical retirement stuff with my employer. I am in my 4th year of retirement, and, to this day continue to have Mr. Payne represent me. He has a wealth of knowledge because he has been doing his job for many years. I have been to hearings with the industrial commission and was very pleased that he grilled the Vocational Rehab folks. I would certainly recommend Mr. Payne to anyone dealing with work comp mess.

Jeanne has been our attorney for the last 10+ years. She helped us receive compensation when our 3 yr. son was attacked by a dog, leaving his lip almost ripped off. ( Our 1st Attorney was unable to achieve this). Jeanne also helped us win a lawsuit against our builder when he refused to repair our septic system which failed while we were in our 1 year warranty. She has always made time to answer any questions we may have, and give us sound advice on how to proceed. We would refer her to anyone looking for a trustworthy Attorney.

Recently I engaged Ms. Washburn to represent me in an automobile injury accident in which I was involved. I work in the legal profession with many attorneys, and know how unresponsive and uninterested they can be. Ms. Washburn gave my case the attention it needed, kept me informed, responded quickly to my questions and concerns, and resolved the case promptly to my satisfaction. She was very thorough and listened and learned everything about my case, and then she provided me with the benefit of her legal knowledge and expertise. She knows what she's doing and she gets her point across to the other side, and they understand that she means business. She did an outstanding job for me and I would highly recommend her. In fact, I have already recommended a friend to her!

I give Aaron Hemmings an A+++. I am from Maryland and my daughter was a passenger in an automobile traveling on I-95 coming home from Myrtle Beach where she was involved in a multiple auto collision. She was hurt but recovered after a year. I attempted to deal with the insurance casualty adjuster who made an offer that was insulting. I did my research and found the law firm of Hemmings and Stevens. Aaron took over and negotiated an offer that was nearly double the original offer. He did not stop there. He went after the trauma hospital where my daughter was taken and CIGNA Health Insurance Company to reduce their fees. My daughter is now in college and the settlement will help her with the college debt she is accumulating. Thanks Aaron. I will never forget what you did for my daughter.

Mr Hemmings is a fabulous lawyer, straight forward, honest, confident, and works with a great sense of timeliness. He is an excellent communicator too. I found him by simply googling "insurance specializing" type lawyers and so that's how I found him. I "interviewed" several other similar lawyers found the same way and chose him in an instant after talking with him. If you have an issue that needs to be solved fast, professionally and with a very communicative style, I highly recommend him. I was very pleased and I had used several lawyers previous so I had some to compare him to also.

Had the pleasure of working with Mr Williams. Upon his hiring, he was very thorough in explaining all details to the processes we had to go through as well as actions to be taken. He remained in touch with me to provide updates. Documents were frequently sent for my own review and he always remained responsive during the entire time. He had his work cut out for him due to the case having many obstacles and I was not sure of the outcome. However, Mr Williams remained confident and pursued every conceivable option on my behalf. In the end, he was able to obtain a healthy settlement for me which I did not think possible. I am very grateful I decided to work with this firm. Attorney Williams and his staff were very responsive and kept me in the loop, giving me much appreciated, objective advice. Stacy battled a travel insurance agency to get a full refund for me and my husband who was diagnosed with a progressive disease a couple of weeks before a big family trip to Italy. As if facing the diagnosis wasn't bad enough, learning that the travel insurance company did not want to honor our claim was so disheartening and very aggravating and frightening. We stood to loose quite a bit of money. Stacy handled our case very professionally and with proficiency and kindness. He was very responsive to our needs and kept me well-informed about our progress. After getting Stacy involved, we were refunded everything and in a timely manner. THANK YOU STACY!

My worker's comp case began in 2005 while employed with the state. It dragged on forever as I was shuffled doctor to doctor and given the run-around. I was not hurt seriously enough to warrant a court hearing but did need advice as to how to bring my case to closure and still receive a due impairment award. Ben didn't know me and still took the time to properly advise me so that I could handle the case on my own. Because of him, my case is finally coming to an end. He provided me with the proper information to be able to negotiate with the worker's comp company. I was so impressed that he was not concerned about what was in it for him but what was best for me. He is very knowledgeable and easy to understand. He is not an ambulance chaser. Thank you, Ben!

If you been hurt on the job or need a lawyer for any reason, I would highly recommend Ben Whitley. In the court room he'll show just how smart and knowledgeable he is. He comes well prepared with evidence, questions and answers. He can discredit just about every witness the other side has. He is strong, confident and never nervous, and neither should you with him on your side. He will have you well prepared to face your obstacles. The moment he starts to speak you will feel his confidence and you will see the opposing lawyers facial expressions change. After working with him on my case, which we won thanks to Ben and his staff, we are not just a client and a lawyer, but we are friends! When you work with Ben Whitley you will have a new friend for life!

I first called Michael from my elderly mother's hospital room. She experienced a horrific, on the job injury and was facing months of medical treatment and many more additional surgeries with a questionable outcome. He actually recommended I didn't need an attorney at that time as her needs were being met and it would not add value. Fast forward a year later and we are now in final settlement negotiations. We are overwhelmed with the process and felt we needed advice and counsel. He was generous with his time with me even though he knew we couldn't hire him because of conflict of interest issues. He provided invaluable information about the forms and filings we had ahead of us and referred us to an appropriate attorney to assist us. Continued trespass, harassment and property damage by a neighbor ultimately escalated to a point of confrontation in which I was assaulted. In response, I summoned local police and brought an assault charge against the offender. In retaliation, the neighbor later made false claims & brought a baseless charge against me. The ensuing case caused substantial anxiety over the potential consequences as they would affect me legally, socially & financially. Hiring attorney Kevin Boxberger was the best decision that I could have made. His professional confidence and obvious legal acumen quickly put me at ease. Mr. Boxberger reliably returned my calls, patiently answered all of my questions, articulated thoughtful legal strategies, and always kept me apprised of any progress made in my case. Kevin (and his top-notch staff) remained self-motivated throughout and outworked the opposition in every manner. I'm eternally grateful to Kevin and his staff for managing the optimal legal result: having my charge dismissed outright!

What a Workers’ Compensation Lawyer Can Do for You

A workers’ compensation lawyer specializes in helping employees who are injured or become ill as a result of their job to receive the benefits they are entitled to under workers' compensation laws. These lawyers represent injured workers in claims for medical benefits, wage replacement, and other compensation related to workplace injuries or illnesses. They also help when claims are denied, benefits are delayed, or disputes arise with the employer or the insurance company.

Whether you've been injured on the job, developed an occupational illness, or are dealing with a denied workers' compensation claim, a workers’ compensation lawyer can help you navigate the claims process and ensure you receive the full benefits you deserve.

When Should I Hire a Workers' Compensation Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a workers' compensation lawyer in several situations, especially when complications arise during the claims process or when your rights as an injured worker are being challenged. Some common reasons to hire a workers' compensation lawyer include:

  • Claim denial: If your workers' compensation claim has been denied, a lawyer can help you appeal the decision and represent you in hearings or litigation.
  • Inadequate benefits: If the insurance company offers you a settlement that doesn’t cover your medical expenses, lost wages, or other damages, a lawyer can negotiate on your behalf for a fair amount.
  • Delay in receiving benefits: If your benefits are being delayed, a lawyer can help expedite the process to ensure you receive timely compensation.
  • Permanent disability: If your injury leads to permanent disability (partial or total), a lawyer can help you navigate the more complex process of securing long-term benefits.
  • Retaliation by employer: If your employer retaliates against you for filing a workers' compensation claim (e.g., by firing or demoting you), a lawyer can protect your rights and pursue legal action.
  • Third-party liability: If a third party (e.g., a contractor or equipment manufacturer) was responsible for your injury, a lawyer can help you pursue additional compensation through a personal injury lawsuit.
  • Pre-existing conditions: If your employer or the insurance company claims that your injury is related to a pre-existing condition, a lawyer can help you present evidence showing that the injury was work-related.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can prevent delays, avoid mistakes, and ensure you receive all the benefits you’re entitled to under workers' compensation law.

What Does a Workers' Compensation Lawyer Do?

A workers' compensation lawyer provides a range of legal services to injured workers, ensuring that they receive the benefits they deserve. Their tasks often include:

  • Filing claims: Helping injured workers prepare and file their workers' compensation claims to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
  • Appealing denied claims: Representing workers whose claims have been denied and guiding them through the appeals process, including hearings and court appearances.
  • Negotiating settlements: Negotiating with insurance companies to secure fair compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages.
  • Handling disputes: Resolving disputes between the injured worker, the employer, and the insurance company regarding the amount of compensation or the nature of the injury.
  • Coordinating medical evidence: Gathering and presenting medical records, expert testimony, and other evidence to support the workers' compensation claim.
  • Advocating for benefits: Ensuring that injured workers receive all the benefits they’re entitled to, including temporary or permanent disability benefits, vocational rehabilitation, and medical treatment.
  • Filing third-party lawsuits: In cases where a third party is responsible for the injury, a workers' compensation lawyer may also pursue a personal injury lawsuit to recover additional damages.

How Are Workers’ Compensation Lawyers Paid?

Workers' compensation lawyers typically charge a contingency fee, meaning they only get paid if they successfully recover benefits for you. This fee is usually a percentage of the benefits awarded, and the specific percentage is often regulated by state law. Here's how it generally works:

  • Contingency fee: The lawyer's fee is typically between 15% and 25% of the total benefits awarded to you. You don’t have to pay any upfront legal fees, and the lawyer’s fee comes out of the settlement or benefit award.
  • No fee if no recovery: If the lawyer doesn’t recover any benefits for you, you generally don’t have to pay for their services.
  • State regulations on fees: Many states cap the percentage that workers' compensation lawyers can charge, and some states require the fee to be approved by the workers' compensation board or judge.

Be sure to discuss the fee structure with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will owe if your case is successful.

How Much Does a Workers' Compensation Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a workers' compensation lawyer typically depends on the contingency fee arrangement, meaning the lawyer’s fee will be a percentage of the benefits you receive. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fees: Most workers' compensation lawyers charge between 15% and 25% of the total settlement or benefits awarded. For example, if you receive $50,000 in benefits, the lawyer’s fee would range from $7,500 to $12,500.
  • State regulations: Some states limit the percentage that workers' compensation lawyers can charge. In these cases, the fee is usually capped, often at 20% to 25%, depending on state law.
  • Additional costs: Some lawyers may charge for out-of-pocket expenses, such as filing fees, medical records retrieval, and expert witness testimony, though these costs are typically deducted from the settlement after the case is won.

You should always ask for a clear explanation of fees and potential additional costs during your consultation so you understand the financial arrangement.

Top Questions to Ask a Workers' Compensation Lawyer

Before hiring a workers' compensation lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with workers' compensation cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your injury is severe or the case involves disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a contingency fee and whether there are any additional costs you need to be aware of.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including the potential challenges and outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Find out if the lawyer has experience dealing with cases involving similar injuries or disputes, such as denied claims or permanent disability.
  5. How long will the process take?
While it’s difficult to predict an exact timeline, the lawyer should be able to provide a general estimate based on their experience with similar cases.
  6. Will you personally handle my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of your case. Make sure you know who will be working on your claim.

How to Check the Credibility of a Workers' Compensation Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable workers' compensation lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for workers' compensation experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in workers' compensation law and have successfully handled cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s expertise and service.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience in workers' compensation cases.
  • Check for professional affiliations: Membership in organizations like the Workers' Injury Law & Advocacy Group (WILG) or local bar association committees on workers' compensation can indicate the lawyer’s commitment to this area of law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a workers' compensation lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Accident report or incident documentation: Bring any documentation related to your workplace injury or illness, including accident reports or notifications to your employer.
  • Medical records: Provide copies of medical records, including treatment notes, doctor’s reports, and any information related to your injury or condition.
  • Employer correspondence: Bring any letters, emails, or forms related to your claim from your employer or the workers' compensation insurance company.
  • Wage and benefits information: Provide information on your wages, benefits, and any lost income due to the injury.
  • List of questions: Prepare questions about your case, the process, costs, and what to expect moving forward.
  • Timeline of events: Prepare a timeline of the incident, your injury, and any medical treatment or communication with your employer and the insurance company.

Being well-prepared for your consultation will allow the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide you with the best possible legal advice.
