This office is an absolute joke. I made an appointment and dropped off all my new client paperwork in person the day of, only to be called approximately 1 hour prior to my appointment indicating they would be cancelling and rescheduling for 1 week later. Against my better judgement I waited the week, instead of seeking new counsel, only to be called 30 minutes prior to my appointment saying they would be conducting my 1 hour consultation over the phone. They were late calling me for the consultation and they had none of the paperwork I had dropped off at their office scanned in to the computer, and they informed me there was nobody in the office to see the paperwork. The one hour consultation lasted less than 30 minutes, during which I did most of the talking and Guneet Kaur informed me she would need more money to continue giving me service and, again, against my better judgement I filled out the requested paperwork authorizing her to charge my card. She proceeded to disappear for 3 days and did not respond to my calls or emails until I left a message over phone and email rescinding my authorization for her to charge my credit card and informing her I would NOT be retaining her as counsel. Collectively, her office is disorganized and unprofessional. She basically stole the $250 1 hour consultation fee, which she did not provide service in return for and wasted over a week of precious time, during which I should have been making progress on my case. I highly recommend you call, literally, anybody else. Based on your petty and unprofessional response to my review, I wish to add "poor work ethic" to your list of undesirable qualities as an attorney.

I can't thank Guneet Kaur and her staff enough for their outstanding support throughout my divorce process. From the very beginning, they made me feel heard, respected, and fully informed every step of the way. What stood out the most was how dedicated they were to achieving the best possible outcome for me and my family. They were responsive to my concerns, took the time to explain the process, and worked to ensure my interests were protected. Thanks to their hard work and compassion, my divorce was resolved in a way that allowed me to move forward with peace of mind. I highly recommend the Law Office of Guneet Kaur to anyone in need of family law services. They made a difficult time much easier to handle, and I’m forever grateful for their expertise and guidance! Thank you, thank you!!!

Words cannot adequately express how grateful I am to Daniel K. Simon, Carolyn Layfield, and their entire staff. Originally, I injured my lower back lifting a bag of money. My employer refused to accommodate my injury. I became stressed so bad that I couldn’t explain what had happened to me. Somehow, Carolyn understood what I was saying and explained my legal position so I could understand it. “Cumulative Trauma Injury.” Carolyn made sure that I got the best Medical and Psychiatric care. She prepared me for both the Medical and Psychiatric Qualified Medical Examinations, as well as, my Deposition. Workers’ Compensation was fighting pretty hard to deny my benefits, but they were “NO MATCH” for Carolyn Layfield. Carolyn made sure I have a future. I worked as an American Bar Association Accredited Paralegal for over 30 years prior to becoming a Delivery Driver during the pandemic. I know what constitutes a “Great Attorney.” Carolyn is an “Exceptional Attorney.” I am fortunate that she represented me, and I would not hesitate to have her represent me in the future. Thank you…

No one ever wants to be in a work comp situation, but sometimes life has other plans. I was introduced to Megan by a friend and am so glad I was. We had to endure multiple depositions with my former employer and although it was not an ideal situation; I couldn’t have been in better hands than with Megan. She explained everything that was to happening, made the day as pleasant as possible, and somehow was able to smash away any fear I had originally had walking into my meeting. In the deposition she is force to be reckoned with, meaning she is a total badass! Not only did she not let the other lawyer get away with twisting my words, she was able to negotiate an early settlement. I would call onto her again in a heartbeat if I ever needed a work comp attorney again. She was an absolute pleasure to work with. Cannot recommend her enough!!

I was put into a position at work where I was lifting heavy objects and helping out the other laborers, when I am technically a dispatch assistant. After injuring my pelvic area, I found Anton and called him up immediately. My case was taken care of in a matter of a week, and I received compensation for my injury in full. Thank you so much Anton for your help.

Jody was the absolute answer to my prayers! I was stuck in a very difficult situation, and had contacted various lawyers seeking help and advice for a circumstance that others seemed unfamiliar with and hopeless about. Jody was very positive, and by far the most confident out of all the lawyers I reached out to. She is extremely knowledgeable and also a genuinely kind lady. She was very clear in her explanation of all that was going on, and she calmly walked me through one of the most painful and confusing times in my life. Her responses to my issues were very quick, and she took the time to help me understand each step of the process, without hesitation. Without her help and advocacy, I have no idea what I would have done. She has been monumental to my health, financial situation, and also served as such a strong support system for me. I am forever grateful for all she has done, and would not ever question going elsewhere if you are in a bind. She is dedicated, well-versed, and top notch in her profession.

I had a terrible accident at work that left me in a tough spot. My lawyer at the time would never respond and even wanted to settle my case with minimal compensation. That’s when I made the switch to The Law Offices of Randmaa and Buie. I had Kathryn Randmaa take over my case. She got rid of the other lawyer for me so I didn’t have to face that awkward situation. She was very responsive and never left me in the dark throughout the whole process. While workers comp/insurance was fighting me tooth and nail, Kathryn fought even harder. She outshined the opposition. It was like the NFL Vs a high school football team. They were no match for Mrs. Randmaa. It was amazing! She also got me compensated significantly more than what the other lawyer was trying to settle for. She truly TRULY was a blessing. I highly recommend her if you want a big time lawyer. I learned this the hard way that there are levels to lawyers. And she’s at the top! Thank you Kathryn for everything ! Been meaning to put this review for a while.

Jody was AMAZING!! I was so stressed and lost when I injured my neck and shoulder at work. Dealing with workers compensation left me in tears and so lost. Jody was referred to me and I can honestly say, hiring her was the best decision. I was able to have the surgeries I needed and close my case in a timely manner. Thank you so much Jody for being absolutely AMAZING!!

Awful service they haven't gave me my worker's compensation check. They received it in September 2024 and I have yet to receive it. You have to constantly keep calling for them to answer. They procrastinate and say your lawyer is out so they can't do anything about it, which doesn't make any sense. I've been calling and calling for months and no update even though the case has been closed.

Without question, the worst law firm ever. Another reviewer said they never contact you. The reviewer is spot-on. They don't care about customers here. And when you call and inquire about the status of your case, they act like you're a pest impinging on their free time during work hours. Emily is by far the worst paralegal I have ever had the displeasure of encountering. She never calls you back. She never keeps you updated on your case. She even gets testy with customers. One time I complained to her boss Alicia about Emily's inability to call me back, and Emily texted me back, chewing me the customer out. Well, we certainly know who the real boss is here. Apparently, the leaders here are so weak they allow employees in lower positions (like Emily) to mistreat and shirk their duties as paralegals. Pitiful. They are TERRIBLE at winning cases here. I had doctors at Stanford University who corroborated my injuries, and all they could get for me was a lousy nuisance fee -- a fee which incompetent Emily tried to bully me into sending back to them. The worker's comp QME Alan Ross is clearly in bed with employers. They threw out my first QME and gave me the terrible Alan Ross. This Alan Ross barely talked to me and decided he knew more than the doctors at Stanford -- some of the best doctors in the world. Most recently, Alica was supposed to call me back regarding my old case. She couldn't even be bothered to do that. The QME's decision to decide in favor of the worker's comp company was a great injustice and it went against the recommendations of esteemed doctors. All my lawyers at Ghitterman and Ghitterman could tell me that if I turn down the nuisance fee, I woudn't get a red cent. So I reluctantly acceptec the nuisance fee. So two years later I get a letter from the treasury department collecting for Medicare for work that Medicare said was not their responsibility. And then I called back to Ghitterman and Ghitterman to see if I can recoup some of this 2500 dollars, and they are so terrible to their clients, they can't even get back. PLEASE AVOID THIS JOKE OF A LAW FIRM. They're expanding their offices. I suspect, with good reason, they're selling out us -- OUR CLIENTS. Now the Treasury is deducting 300 dollars from my Social Security payments because Ghitterman and Ghitterman drove me into bankruptcy. Thanks for nothing, GG John Bristow

What a Workers’ Compensation Lawyer Can Do for You

A workers’ compensation lawyer specializes in helping employees who are injured or become ill as a result of their job to receive the benefits they are entitled to under workers' compensation laws. These lawyers represent injured workers in claims for medical benefits, wage replacement, and other compensation related to workplace injuries or illnesses. They also help when claims are denied, benefits are delayed, or disputes arise with the employer or the insurance company.

Whether you've been injured on the job, developed an occupational illness, or are dealing with a denied workers' compensation claim, a workers’ compensation lawyer can help you navigate the claims process and ensure you receive the full benefits you deserve.

When Should I Hire a Workers' Compensation Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a workers' compensation lawyer in several situations, especially when complications arise during the claims process or when your rights as an injured worker are being challenged. Some common reasons to hire a workers' compensation lawyer include:

  • Claim denial: If your workers' compensation claim has been denied, a lawyer can help you appeal the decision and represent you in hearings or litigation.
  • Inadequate benefits: If the insurance company offers you a settlement that doesn’t cover your medical expenses, lost wages, or other damages, a lawyer can negotiate on your behalf for a fair amount.
  • Delay in receiving benefits: If your benefits are being delayed, a lawyer can help expedite the process to ensure you receive timely compensation.
  • Permanent disability: If your injury leads to permanent disability (partial or total), a lawyer can help you navigate the more complex process of securing long-term benefits.
  • Retaliation by employer: If your employer retaliates against you for filing a workers' compensation claim (e.g., by firing or demoting you), a lawyer can protect your rights and pursue legal action.
  • Third-party liability: If a third party (e.g., a contractor or equipment manufacturer) was responsible for your injury, a lawyer can help you pursue additional compensation through a personal injury lawsuit.
  • Pre-existing conditions: If your employer or the insurance company claims that your injury is related to a pre-existing condition, a lawyer can help you present evidence showing that the injury was work-related.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can prevent delays, avoid mistakes, and ensure you receive all the benefits you’re entitled to under workers' compensation law.

What Does a Workers' Compensation Lawyer Do?

A workers' compensation lawyer provides a range of legal services to injured workers, ensuring that they receive the benefits they deserve. Their tasks often include:

  • Filing claims: Helping injured workers prepare and file their workers' compensation claims to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
  • Appealing denied claims: Representing workers whose claims have been denied and guiding them through the appeals process, including hearings and court appearances.
  • Negotiating settlements: Negotiating with insurance companies to secure fair compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages.
  • Handling disputes: Resolving disputes between the injured worker, the employer, and the insurance company regarding the amount of compensation or the nature of the injury.
  • Coordinating medical evidence: Gathering and presenting medical records, expert testimony, and other evidence to support the workers' compensation claim.
  • Advocating for benefits: Ensuring that injured workers receive all the benefits they’re entitled to, including temporary or permanent disability benefits, vocational rehabilitation, and medical treatment.
  • Filing third-party lawsuits: In cases where a third party is responsible for the injury, a workers' compensation lawyer may also pursue a personal injury lawsuit to recover additional damages.

How Are Workers’ Compensation Lawyers Paid?

Workers' compensation lawyers typically charge a contingency fee, meaning they only get paid if they successfully recover benefits for you. This fee is usually a percentage of the benefits awarded, and the specific percentage is often regulated by state law. Here's how it generally works:

  • Contingency fee: The lawyer's fee is typically between 15% and 25% of the total benefits awarded to you. You don’t have to pay any upfront legal fees, and the lawyer’s fee comes out of the settlement or benefit award.
  • No fee if no recovery: If the lawyer doesn’t recover any benefits for you, you generally don’t have to pay for their services.
  • State regulations on fees: Many states cap the percentage that workers' compensation lawyers can charge, and some states require the fee to be approved by the workers' compensation board or judge.

Be sure to discuss the fee structure with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will owe if your case is successful.

How Much Does a Workers' Compensation Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a workers' compensation lawyer typically depends on the contingency fee arrangement, meaning the lawyer’s fee will be a percentage of the benefits you receive. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fees: Most workers' compensation lawyers charge between 15% and 25% of the total settlement or benefits awarded. For example, if you receive $50,000 in benefits, the lawyer’s fee would range from $7,500 to $12,500.
  • State regulations: Some states limit the percentage that workers' compensation lawyers can charge. In these cases, the fee is usually capped, often at 20% to 25%, depending on state law.
  • Additional costs: Some lawyers may charge for out-of-pocket expenses, such as filing fees, medical records retrieval, and expert witness testimony, though these costs are typically deducted from the settlement after the case is won.

You should always ask for a clear explanation of fees and potential additional costs during your consultation so you understand the financial arrangement.

Top Questions to Ask a Workers' Compensation Lawyer

Before hiring a workers' compensation lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with workers' compensation cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your injury is severe or the case involves disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a contingency fee and whether there are any additional costs you need to be aware of.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including the potential challenges and outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Find out if the lawyer has experience dealing with cases involving similar injuries or disputes, such as denied claims or permanent disability.
  5. How long will the process take?
While it’s difficult to predict an exact timeline, the lawyer should be able to provide a general estimate based on their experience with similar cases.
  6. Will you personally handle my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of your case. Make sure you know who will be working on your claim.

How to Check the Credibility of a Workers' Compensation Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable workers' compensation lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for workers' compensation experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in workers' compensation law and have successfully handled cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s expertise and service.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience in workers' compensation cases.
  • Check for professional affiliations: Membership in organizations like the Workers' Injury Law & Advocacy Group (WILG) or local bar association committees on workers' compensation can indicate the lawyer’s commitment to this area of law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a workers' compensation lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Accident report or incident documentation: Bring any documentation related to your workplace injury or illness, including accident reports or notifications to your employer.
  • Medical records: Provide copies of medical records, including treatment notes, doctor’s reports, and any information related to your injury or condition.
  • Employer correspondence: Bring any letters, emails, or forms related to your claim from your employer or the workers' compensation insurance company.
  • Wage and benefits information: Provide information on your wages, benefits, and any lost income due to the injury.
  • List of questions: Prepare questions about your case, the process, costs, and what to expect moving forward.
  • Timeline of events: Prepare a timeline of the incident, your injury, and any medical treatment or communication with your employer and the insurance company.

Being well-prepared for your consultation will allow the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide you with the best possible legal advice.
