I would go to townsend law again 100% and recommend everyone who needs a lawyer to call Mike Townsend. He did a great job representing my case and fought for my settlement. I do have to say that although situations needing a lawyer are never good, I had the greatest experience. What made this experience so awsome was the constant support I recieved fron from Theresa and Colleen. I survived a fatality accident that left me handicap for the rest of my life. I lost my career my house, everything. So many days I wanted to give up, throw away my lawsuit, crawl into a hole and die. Theresa and Colleen never gave up on me and helped me to stay strong and stick it out. You can't imagine the stress, fear, doubt and self loathing a person goes thru until you are living it yourself. Matt Bretz and his team handled my personal injury case in spectacular fashion culminating in a fair and just settlement well before going to trial. Their successful track record of years of ethical practices and knowledgeable, effective representation served me well. The lawyer you choose does make a difference.
I suffered a debilitating injury in a fall due to unsafe conditions while dining in a Kansas tourist town. We tried to negotiate a fair settlement with the proprietor's insurance company ourselves but they offered us only a laughable, token amount to sign off on all claims since their “investigation” concluded that their client was not at fault.
My husband had purchased a couple books on the subject of seeking a premises liability settlement without hiring a lawyer, which greatly aided our case. Learning from the many actual case histories detailed Matt’s book, we were able to compose a compelling and eloquent Demand Letter. Still, the insurance company knew they had the upper hand especially since we were out-of-state and out-gunned. So they hoped that we would simply give up in frustration fighting an uphill battle.
One of the books that we purchased from Amazon titled “And Justice for All: Win Your Injury Case with Honesty and Integrity” was co-authored by Matthew Bretz and Melinda Young of Hutchinson, Kansas. Besides the book’s excellent content, the law firm of Bretz and Young was a perfect fit geographically since we now needed a lawyer that was licensed to practice in Kansas yet not in the immediate vicinity of the same town. The stars were aligned which led us to call Matt’s office and shortly afterward he pulled off the road to call us for details. He enthusiastically convinced us that he wanted to take this case (for public safety concerns as well) and was confident in a favorable outcome. He followed up by having photos taken of the deteriorating premise conditions the following weekend and he took charge from day one.
Matt is a very cordial and compassionate gentlemen but when it came to his negotiating skills in mediation, his tenacity and experience shone through. Mediation is an increasingly common (and often mandated) formal procedure before assigning a court date that often results in early settlement. We quickly learned to appreciate having Matt on our side. The opposing lawyer team tried a couple tricks but Matt saw right through them and put them on the defense. He then cleverly devised a simple yet effective formula of assigning a calculated value of pain and suffering that a jury could easily assign a tangible figure. Just the mention of presenting this to a jury in closing arguments instantly broke the stalemate in mediation negotiations, leading to a quick and rewarding resolution without the time-consuming expense and uncertainty of a jury trial.
Regardless of whether or not you might try going it alone, you would do well to purchase a couple books such as Matt’s to educate yourself for one of the most important financial events of your life. Before you say or do something that might jeopardize your case, take the time to research and learn how the legal system works. Most likely if your case rises to a high dollar figure, you will benefit greatly by choosing the right lawyer to achieve a fair and just settlement. We found our perfect match in Bretz and Young.

I would like to state that if you need a lawyer Rick Morefield is the way to go. He worked with my family in the loss of my daughter. He was so compassionate and understanding and such a very hard worker.
Our case lasted over 7 years due to covid and he did not once give up on us even though he was not getting paid for all of the work that he was putting in for us. He came up with all kinds of strategies to win our case.
Rick took time to explain legal terms with us and made us aware of what he was doing and how he planned to win our case. I was very impressed on how knowledgeable he was about the law.

There is so much that I can say about Rick and his team but nothing would express my gratitude level towards them. Rick is so caring and intelligent. He puts everything he has towards helping get the best outcome for his clients. He doesnt look at what is best for him at all, he purely cares for his clients. He was with me from day one in the hospital, he kept in touch with me throughout the entire case and it was not a 30 day situation. It took me 2 years due to the level of my injuries and having to end my medical care so we could see just how much I could gain back after my car accident. He was there for me when I needed to cry, when I needed to yell and everything in between. He was my voice of reason and knowing that my cases are over now I am more heartbroken just knowing that I will not have that constant contact as I have grown so fond of him. I know we will keep in touch because he is such a caring person. Watching him work during mediation, come up with scenarios and charts to help explain things so that you get the best outcome was amazing to see, he is the smartest person I have ever met. If you are looking for a firm that actually cares about you and will do whats best for your family then he is your attorney. He is 1000% better than any review could ever say.

My car accident was in 2010. This case was an international case because I am an international student who is from Taiwan. I studied in Salina kansas and it happened in South Dakota. He pretected my rights and explained every detials for me. I really apprecatied everything he had done for me. When I was injured in an on-the-job accident in 1999, Pat was the attorney I chose to represent me because he was a neighbor and a personal friend, who I had known for nearly ten years. Pat helped me secure an award for the state maximum amount, as well as an agreement that obligated the work comp insurer for future, accident-related, medical expenses. I settled into an amicable relationship with the insurer that lasted for nearly 10 years, but suddenly, for reasons that I've never been able to discern, I began having trouble securing insurance approval for prescribed medicines. Additionally, the insurer demanded I consult a physician located 3 hours away because they were "concerned about the quality of care" my pain management physician was providing. I suspected their concern was more likely centered on prescription cost, rather than quality of care, but I knew I needed legal help to resolve the issue. Even though it had been nearly a decade since Pat had worked on my case, he and his staff gathered the information they needed to adequately, successfully, confront the insurance company and convince them that they would not fare well if this matter would appear before a judge. It's probably no surprise that the insurance company tried several times to make it more difficult for me to maintain the level of pain control I enjoyed prior to their "concern" for my welfare, but Pat successfully met and overcame every challenge. He also submitted the bill for his services to the insurance company, who having been unable to produce a single, successful, legal outcome, signaled total defeat by paying for my defense! I don't know how Pat's performance could possibly be improved.
Pat provides advice that is reasoned and reliable. His strategies are informed by nearly 40 years of experience, which renders them particularly effective. He is practical, but he never made me feel that I was just a "client" or that my issues were just components of a "case". Pat never lost sight of me as a person, and he understood that the result of the insurance company's failure to live up to their responsibilities, was an increase in my physical pain. Pat and his excellent staff worked with an urgency that made me feel as though they were experiencing that same pain. Who could ask anything more?

Background -
I suffered a severe head injury in Johnson County (I lived in Missouri at the time) that left me extremely sensitive to light and noise, a death sentence for a construction contractor. I was left unable to work and I hired an attorney who promised to sue and win.
Long story short, the first injury attorney (located in Kansas City) dropped the ball and let my case languish for 3years before it was almost dismissed. I fired that attorney and hired Jeremiah Johnson's office to try and salvage my case.
Jeremiah and his staff immediately jumped into the case and prepared it for trial. They deposed the defendant and his colleagues which led to a substantial settlement a few weeks before trial. My life was changed for the better by his efforts - I would still be suffering on a daily basis without thier help.
Jeremiah never failed to answer the phone or call me back like my first attorney. He always kept me in the loop, compared to my first attorney who would go months without a word.
Jeremiah also hired a medical expert who put a value on my permanent disability. This seemed to be a key to me getting a settlement that was literally 10 times what was previously offered when my old attorney was involved.
I highly recommend Jeremiah and his office to anyone who has a personal injury/permanent disability case in Kansas City.
